Motherboard hangs on POST when USB card reader is plugged in

Hi there, I am using the MSI Z77A-GD65 GAMING motherboard. I am using the following USB card reader which I bought from a local store: Amazon.com: Epraizer Universal Flash & SIM Card Reader/Writer, USB 2.0: Computers & Accessories
However, whenever I boot with this device, my BIOS is stuck at error code 'C6'. A check on AMI's website shows that this related is probably related to boot devices. I am able to boot fine with other USB devices plugged in, such as USB thumbdrive and USB hard disk.
At first, I thought it was a problem with my device but I can boot fine with the memory card reader plugged in on all my other computers. This makes me wonder if there is a firmware fault? I have tried disabling legacy USB and removing USB devices from boot order, but nothing helps. I have seen that in the forums some BIOS updates for some motherboards fix this issue, for example: **Official MSI Z77 Mpower Discussion Thread** - Overclockers UK Forums , where in one of the BIOS update the changes reads: Fix the issue that the system will hang 0xB4 or 0x99 when use customer usb cable or usb cardreaders.(USB cardreader: KAMA reader Tr, Akasa card reader).
So I was wondering if it's a common issue with MSI motherboards? Will there be a fix or my motherboard is now too old to be supported? I purchased this motherboard two months ago btw
P.S it works fine when I plug it in in Windows. I have tried both the ports in front and at the back, USB 2 or 3.

It is then obviously a compatibility issue with that particular card reader and that particular board model. As your board is long time EOL ("End-of-life") and has been replaced by two generations already there will be no further updates. What bios versions did you try already?

  • MacBook Pro now does not recognize USB card reader

My computer recently stopped recognizing my usb card reader. The usb port works fine with my iphone and ipod. The card reader works when plugged into a windows based machine. The problem is not related to OS 10.6 because I had the issue prior to upgrade. I must of updated something software related that is causing the problem. Anyone have any ideas?

My computer recently stopped recognizing my usb card reader.
We'll need to know exactly what you mean by this. Plug in the reader, without a card in it. Go to Apple Menu > About this Mac > More Info and click on USB in the left column of System Profiler. Do you see *Mass Storage Device* listed under one of the USB port entries in the right part of the window? If so, the reader is recognized. If not, it really isn't. In that case, reset the SMC in your MBP:

Then test again and post back with results.

  • USB card reader problem with T430 laptop (Win 8)

    I have a Thinkpad T430, running Windows 8 with 16G memory.
I have recently encountered problems with a USB card reader. I thought the reader was faulty so I bought a new one, but that one fails as well. It makes no difference which socket it is in.
After being plugged in for a few seconds, the 'drives' the reader sets up start to flash in the 'Computer' window - it seems they are continually being disconnected and reconnected.
Disabling USB 3.0 in the BIOS makes no difference. One card reader is USB 2 and the other is USB 3
Changing the power settings so the USB selective suspend is disabled makes no difference.
I am pretty sure that it was OK a month ago when I last used a card reader (the machine is about 2 months old).
    What is going on?
    Any ideas?
    Thanls,
    Michael

    Ok Mr. Micheal,
One thing you can attempt to do is download the SmartCard Reader Driver for Windows 8 (64-bit) - ThinkPad on the Lenovo website. The path you need to take is listed below.
    1. Go to the Lenovo website (www.lenovo.com)
    2. Select the support link at the top of the page
    3. Your going to see for windows listed select the type of support you need, so select drivers and software
    4. Its going to ask for your machine information so enter in your machine type or your product ID
    5. Scroll down to camera and card reader and open the link
    6. Download SmartCard Reader Driver for Windows 8 (64-bit) - ThinkPad
    7. Follow the set up wizard and one the driver is installed reboot your machine
Please respond once this action is performed and let me know if this happens to resolve your issue. Thank you

  • Mobilemate usb card reader adapter worked well in Macbk pro. suddenly stopped showing up as a device in finder-it is listed as a device in utilities- how do I get it to show up again?

Can anyone tell me how to get my mobilemate sandisk usb card reader adapter to show up in the finder as a device? Card is good and the adapter was working fine until my boyfriend tried to get it to work in a photo frame. When I plugged it back into my mac bk pro it is not recognized in the finder.
It does show up in the utilities as a usb device.
Does not show up as it had before in Image Capture or Iphoto.
LIke I said it was working in this computer no problem. light is on as if it is reading. card is not locked.
    thanks!

I reformated the disk with an applecare rep this morning. it did not correct the problem.
the card works fine when I insert it directly.
Just trying to find out why the adapter no longer shows up in the finder when it did previously- yesterday.
This is a usb device. Device shows up in system profiler.

  • USB Card Reader Works with Bios 1.70

Just to report that I upgraded to Bios 1.70 and reconnected by USB Card Reader and I rebooted the computer a few times with NO bios hang-ups! Your milage may vary, but I'm happy to see MSI fix this big issue with me!

...hmmm...same here, maybe 95% of the time...nevertheless, much improved...

  • Slow USB Card Reader - MacBook Air / Windows 7 64-bit / Boot Camp 3.2

Installation of Windows 7 64-bit on my new MacBook Air 11" seemed to go flawlessly from the attached USB SuperDrive. I see no driver issues or unrecognized devices in Device Manager. However, when attaching my Transcend USB 2.0 Compact Flash card reader to load pictures from my camera into Lightroom 3.3, data transfer is mega-SLOW. It takes several minutes (10?) to transfer just 4 pictures. It seems like it may be operating at USB 1.0 speeds.
Installing software from the SuperDrive on the same USB port seems to work fine. Attaching a USB mouse works fine. However, the USB card reader is very, very slow.
If I attach the same card reader, CF card, and cable to another Windows 7 machine, it works fine, so I don't think there's a problem with my reader / card / cable.
Any thoughts about how I might improve performance for the card reader on the MacBook Air (other than running Mac OS)?
    Thanks!

  • Camera / USB card reader not connection to macs anymore - fine with PCs

    Hi there,
I have a Canon EOS 50 which has a CF card - I normally connect this to our macbook pros with a crd reader via usb. Alternatively, I connect the camera directly.
Yesterday, something started to go wrong.
I was connecting the card to download photos - at first it recognised the card as an external drive, but was taking ages to read the photos. Then it flashed an error message up that it couldn't read the format of the disk (it had previously for about a year!).
Now when I connect the card via either reader or by connection to the camera, it doesn't recognise the card at all.
I tried this on both my mac book pros we own. Same issues.
Canon HD camcorder connects absolutely fine via usb, as does Ipod - so it isn't the usb port.
I think the cards are ok- (same issue with two different CF cards)
The camera connected no problem to my brother-in-law's vista machine, and downloaded the image files.
I tried connection with two different usb cables as well.
Any ideas as to what has happened?
    Thanks,
    ThreeIsles

Last year I purchased a USB card reader to have available with my laptop when I travel. It experienced the same problems you are having. It also wouldn't work with my G4.
I looked on the manufacturer's web site and sent their Customer Support an email explaining the problem. They sent me a new reader at no cost. It works. Suggest you do the same.

  • Copying files to SD card using USB card reader

Everytime I try to copy mp3 files to an SD card using a USB card reader my notebook hangs after just a few MB have been transferred. what should i do?

I myself have seen this happen right in front of me with a customer. Sometimes you have to me a little more selective with your card readers because not all of them work right out of the box.
I have found the Zio corporation readers to work splended with Mac OS X you can find them at Compusa I haven't really seen them any other place. But IMHO the issue is with your reader and not your memory.
As for the part number on the reader from compusa it is as follows that is if you are willing to give it a try....
Thunderbolt SD / MMC / MS Reader / Writer
    Manufacturer: Zio Corporation
    Mfg Part #: CM28100
    Product Number: 332371

  • Not recognising USB card reader and also PhotoBooth issue

    Hi,
I'm a new member and a bit of a numpty when it comes to Mac (new owner).
My Macbook Pro is giving me some grief tonight and I have 2 separate (i think) issues.
It will not recognise my USB card reader. It worked fine last week and I did eject it properly before removing it. I've tried the card reader on a PC and it is working fine....
Also when I go to open Photo Booth it tells me that my camera is not connected or in use by another program. But as you know the camera is built in!?!?!
I'd be very grateful for any thoughts on how I might fix the problems. The nearest Mac store is 2 hours away....
    Many thanks in advance

  • Where is a USB card reader mounted

Hi, I'm connecting a USB card reader to look at picture taken with my DSLR.  Once my card reader is connected, I can see the filename using the Filereader but the format of the file is not supported and I can't look at the picture.I've found an Android application (RawDroid) who can display that format but that app does not have the same kind of menu to select where I want to read the file from (Device-Personal, Media card, USB Device...).I'm wondering if there is a way to find where the card reader is mounted directly from the root?  I've been able to find the SDCARD folder (my inserted memory card) but nothing about the card reader. Thanks

    Hi Roger,
Take a look at the Maintenance and Service Guide for info regarding the part numbers and such.
You may learn a bit about the screen from this document.  Please let me know if this helps.
    Good luck!

  • USB Card Reader no longer works after Lion update.

My USB card reader/writers no loger work since I "upgraded" to Lion 10.7.4. All was well with Snow Leopard, but with no built-in SD card reader I must rely on USB readers. Anyone know how to fix this issue? Are there updates avaiable or coming soon to resolve this issue?

Hi MissMedia 83 and welcome to the forums!!
This has been a trend that a lot of AppleCare advisors have been seeing as call drivers. Essentially, many of the USB internet modems that are used widely require a 32bit kernel to operate. In Snow Leopard, although the system was in 64bit by defauly, people had the option of booting the computer into a 32bit mode to use the USB modems successfully.
With Lion, however, no such options exists. If your USB modem device is only compatible with a 32bit machine, then your only options are to either downgrade to Snow Leopard or find a different provider that supports 64bit.
Sorry to be the bearer of crappy news. My suggestion is to use something like a pocket wifi or personal hotspot, where you have a wifi network that is being created by a small device that connects to the cell network. Much much easier and your computer thinks it's just a regular wifi network.
This is what I think the issue is anyway. Could be wrong.
    Any other suggestions?

  • Sun Ray - How to get external USB Card Reader working

    Dear All,
i have the following problem. Maybe someone could help me or give me a clue to solve it.
    SunRay Software 5 installed
    Window 2003 R2 TerminalServer
    Here my question:
I use a kiosk session with a smart card to conncet to the windows server - works perfect.
    Login Screen and go.
Now i have to have to authenticate myself with an external usb card reader and smart
card (connected to the sun ray) to use a certain application on my win2003 server.
Via the windows rdp session (from the laptops) everthing is ok. The information from
the card reader is transferred to the server.
If i use the Sun Ray nothing happens. So here is my problem:
How do get the authentication information from the smart card to the server?
    Thanks in advance
    Best regards
    Hans-Peter

Basically, reinstall the Boot Camp video drivers manually and if that doesn't work then go to the AMD/Radeon website and install the Windows drivers directly for your video card model.
If you want to do a search you will find others that have pretty good luck doing it either way.

  • USB Card reader works on MacBook Pro but not Mac Pro

I have a random "All-in-1" card reader from Quantaray. I'm trying to mount my CF card because it takes forever and a day to import HD video directly from my Canon 5D Mk II.
It works on my MacBook Pro (Mid 2010). Both computers are running 10.6.8. All I have to do is plug it in and it appears on the desktop on my Macbook. But not on my Mac Pro.
I've already tried resetting the PRAM and SMC. No dice
It shows up in the System Profiler under the USB High Speed port as a usb card reader but I can't find it anywhere; not even in Disk Utility.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    jaypie77,
First, you must identify the application that created the file. If it truly was Macromedia Flash, fine. Once you know which app created the file, make certain that the same application exists on the Mac Pro. If it does, set the file to open in that application: Open a Getinfo window for the file, then use the "Open With..." dialogue to choose Macromedia Flash (or the correct application) to open the file.

  • Installed Snow Leopard 10.6.3, now usb card reader (CF, SD etc.) is not rec

For some reason my MacBook doesn't recognize my usb card reader at all now. I have never had this happen before. It doesn't matter if my camera's cf card is in the reader or out or if it's plugged into my usb hub or directly into the MacBook. I just installed Snow Leopard so I think that's causing it, however, I don't know what to do to fix it....

Shutdown and restart, Zapping the Pram. Then, try the card again.

  • New Lexar USB card reader, X tells me low power

The card reader worked fine yesterday.
Today, no matter where I plug it in (usb port) or the keyboard, OS X pops up a window telling me there is low power for this device. Therefore, I can not mount the CF card in the Lexar card reader.
This card didn't have any installers. Should I look for some on their webpage?
I guess I should have bought the Sandisk card reader, about the same price, eh?
Should I start looking for my receipt to trade it for the Sandisk card reader?

Lexar USB card reader is: Model RW022 Rev A
I did contact Lexar using their 24 hour live chat on their webpage. An excerpt from the conversation is pasted below. I wrote "Lexar" and "me" to hide identities of those involved.
Lexar: we are sorry to say that, our card reader is compatible with USB 1.0, USB 2.0.
    Lexar: not compatible with 1.0
me: so the card reader is not compatible with 1.0 on a Mac
    Lexar: exactly.
Lexar: not compatible with USB 1.0
    me: ok, thanx
Lexar: is there any thing else i need to assist you.
me: yes, what versions of Mac OS is this card reader compatibvle with?
Lexar: this reader RW022 is compatible with MAC tiger.
me: from your webpage this card reader is compatible with USB 1.1 and USB 2.0
    me: http://www.lexar.com/readers/compactflash-2.html
me: All Macs, even older ones, were USB 1.1
Lexar: all lexar products are compatible with USB 1.1 and USB 2.0 only.
me: My mac is USB 1.1
    Lexar: then it will work.
The conversation went on and Lexar asked for time to research this, which I told them to take all the time they needed.
In the end though, Lexar asked me if I had it connected to the keyboard, and I answered yes, and they said it should be connected to the tower.
So I'm assuming connecting the card reader to the Apple keyboard doesn't have enough power (as the keyboard and Pro Mouse are also using the power there). They told me it should work if connected to the tower. I thanked them and said I'd try that.
So I'm assuming that this card reader should either be connected to the Cube directly (without turning it over I hope I have 3 USB ports under there) or to a better USB port that is powered (than what I have) so that the card reader gets plenty of power. In the past, I simply connected my very old CF reader [in OS 9.x] to the keyboard (like I do my scanner) and it worked.
Do most card readers need to be connected to the "tower" or to a powered usb port?
