Motherboard lasted only 21 days after warranty, ONE YEAR.

We purchased our HP 1150us g7 a year ago. Our warranty ran out 21 days ago. Now our Dual USB ports no longer show up on the Device Manager so we can install new drivers or uninstall and reinstall them, THEY ARE NOT THERE.
I contacted HP and our warranty ran out 21 days ago, we have NO WARRANTY OR WILL GET NO HELP. Our Motherboard and USB issues are related and would cost at least $400. at the very least to repair.
We paid nearly $600. for our HP notebook NEW ONE YEAR AGO. We thought it would last us a few years, we are seniors and money in this economy is in short supply.
Since we can not tell our friends how wonderfully HP helped us with a year old HP $600.00 Notebook we will have to tell them HP DID NOTHING TO MAKE THIS RIGHT.
I am sure it will change some folks minds about dealing with HP. In fact I know it will make a difference to our friends and family.

Yes the motherboard needs to be repaired or replaced but the prices you are being quoted are way high. The places I linked will fix the motherboard. I can replace a motherboard but just do not have the equipment to do the component level repairs. I am not offering to do it I can just tell you I am fully aware of what the parts and labor cost. The motherboard can be replaced for around $250 parts and labor. It can be repaired for much less. Once repaired the motherboard is as good as new. But no one can guarantee how long any electronics will last. Good luck to you.

Battery damaged after just one year of use

I am a medical student residing in hostel.I bought my Lenovo3000N100 notebook in feb'2007.After just one year of very minimal usage, the notebook battery has failed and now requires replacement.
How can such a company as lenovo's battery expire after 1 yr of use of maybe just 1-2 hours of running time per day or even less???
Even companies like ACER n HP have given better performance of their batteries which my roomates are using 3years n 2 years running n still working fine without any complains to date.
This battery problem has created a negative publicity for lenovo in my hostel and now nobody in my hostel or acquaintance wants to buy a lenovo product seeing my condition.

Insignia TV flickering - any ideas? started 2 days after warranty expired.

My Insignia flat panel TV flickers after watching it for a couple hours. Then I have to turn the TV off and then on to make it better, but it's only good for a few minutes. Only by turning the TV off for an hour or so is it good for another couple of hours. The TV is about 3 years old. Anyone have any idea?

It definitely sounds like a heat issue. You might want to use a *poowerful* vacuum like a shop vac, and while the TV is unplugged, blow all the dust collected inside the unit. If that does not help, then a repair is needed.

Massive lag on Xbox 360 for last 2 days after midn...

Hi for the last 2 nights around 12am i get massive lag on xbox 360. Even though i am signed into live i cant connect to game servers and if i do lag is unbearable. Thing is its perfectly fine until it gets to midnight and then its impossible to play anything. Checked xbox forums no probs there.
My exchange was upgraded 2 weeks ago, so dunno if their doing tests there after midnight? I live in the Wrexham area north wales, any suggestions why this is happening? Many thanks.
ps checked my speeds when this is happening and they are the same as when the problem is not there.

Sometimes after midnight, there will be a switch over to where you will be connecting to in terms of place, for ex America etc.
Places that are further away, which could be why you are experiencing more problems.

T440s - one year after

Since it's back to school/college time a friend asked me what laptop to
buy and my opinion of the T440s I'm using now for one year. I wrote him
back the following, which may also be interesting for some of you:
*** the good ***
- The formfactor.
~1.5kg is IMHO the upper limit for a laptop and this is fine.
I really don't care about thickness. And I like the "sharp" edges.
- The snug fit of the battery, nothing sticks out.
I like it when protection sleeves "just fit".
- The HD screen.
The picture is great - but maybe I was just lucky to get an AUO panel.
- The keyboard.
I like it overall. There appear to be different versions, the keys on
mine feel just fine. I like the position of PageUp/Down on the side of
the cursor keys. I would like to have "delete" also somewhere near... hmmm.
- Integrated WWAN.
Best money ever spent.
- Integrated smartcard reader.

This is a thing I miss in smaller laptops the most and I don't want
to carry around a USB reader.
- During low/medium CPU loads fan does not run. So when one just does e.g.
text editing work you can easily do this in bed and not worry that the fan
sucks up dust fast.

- Only one light, on the power button.
Can I have please at least another to indicate current (de-)charging status?
- I miss the thinklight, but the backlit keyboard does its job.
- The speakers/headphones are noisy. When audio is off you don't hear anything,
but if one hears audio you constantly hear a background hiss. I'm aware that
with such tight integration some electric interference is possible, however
I'm still disappointed compared to my previous laptops.
- The keyboard.
Who had the glorious idea to combine two rows of keys into one and to make media
keys the default instead of F-keys?
So I set F-keys as default. Now my keyboard has 3 lights always on:
F-lock, audio mute and microphone mute. This is annoying.
- The keyboard wears out over time. Now, after about one years, the keys begin
to feel a bit mushy. Its still ok, but... well, ask me in a year again.
- The keyboard. It gets greasy very fast and in summer it is impossible not
to sweat. So one has to clean it very often, or the screen gets dirty
from the keys also fast. Unfortunately, cleaning the keyboard is delicate
as wiping sideways one has to be careful to not apply too much force.
- Battery length.
I would prefer a longer battery runtime. I would accept more weight and
a thicker machine - however, no batteries which stick out at the back.
Maybe a thin battery slice at the bottom?
- Bottom cover.
Removing the bottom cover and servicing the machine is painful. The plastic
latches break too easily. My machine had the HDD replaced with a SDD, then
the WWAN was installed, then the clickpad broke and had to be serviced.
Every time another latch broke (yes, also by the Lenovo serviceman...) and
now it does not close properly on one side.
Ok, one seldom opens the machine, but still.... this can be done better,
see other brands.
- My screen has developed a white dot.
I very much care for my machine and always transport it in a neoprene sleeve,
so I'm quite sure no force was applied. But it's in a corner of the screen,
so I don't care much.
- My Samsung 840 Pro almost got killed (only half-erased, haha...). It's the
SSD's firmware fault, but still, such a thing should not happen with such a
popular device on the market.
- I was just lucky to not trip on any of the other BIOS suicide bugs, like
booting an UEFI Linux... no one in quality control tried Linux before shipping?
- Lenovo service hotline is very friendly. However in Europe they appear to
be far away in an Eastern country. The phone line is always noisy and even
spelling one's own Email address does not assure that it is recorded
correctly. The service line works, but is a pain.
- Replacing the back battery while the machine is on sometimes works, sometimes
not. If not, a workaround is to hibernate to ram, wake up again and then it
gets detected. Again, why are machines shipping with such a basic bug?
*** the bad ***
- Build quality.
We bought several machines end of 2013/beginning of 2014.
Three quarters of them developed a hardware problem (screen bezel, mainboard
faulty, palm rest broken, etc.) and had to be serviced (one was nearly half
a year in depot for repair!)
In early 2014 our sysadmins blacklisted Lenovos of the *40 series as they
produced just too much work for them. Now no one gets a Lenovo unless one
has a _very good_ reason and personally speaks to admins.
We now buy all our laptops from a different brand.
Many years ago a friend proudly showed me his IBM Thinkpad. He deliberately
shoved it off the table on the floor. I was shocked, but he shrugged his
shoulders and said "they are built to survive that". Today, IMHO the
Thinkpads are no longer better than other brands.
- Screen.
My screen has the known production defect that the right bezel comes off.
I have on-site service so this should be fixable under warranty easily,
however I'm too afraid to call Lenovo for a replacement because I might
get a LG panel. Lenovo is earning money because customers are afraid to
call service they paid for.
- The clickpad. And no hardware mouse buttons.
Seriously, what are/were they thinking?
If you just need to left-click from time to time stationary at a desk it is
fine. All other uses are a constant pain. Right clicks, middle clicks,
combination of clicks, click and drag, in the train, in a plane, anywhere
mobile.... essentially every mobility use case a work laptop is intended for.
Also, by design, a huge pad which one has to mechanically click down is
just a stupid idea. You never get any good precision with that in the long
run, and the resulting noise in a conference meeting - embarrassing.
Also, the constant software driver issues.... seriously?
Make it smaller, no pressing down of whole pad, silent, 3 hardware buttons...
...make it "just work"!
....ok I stop now...
Overall, this will probably be my last Thinkpad (after many years).
As soon as the new Broadwell generation comes I will get rid of this thing.
Thinkpads are no more premium build quality than any other brand and the
clickpad was the last issue which essentially makes buying another Thinkpad
impossible.

Hardware problems one week after warranty expires

So for no identifiable reason, exactly a week after the one year anniversary of getting my iPhone 4 which I have taken very good care of, the home button starts giving problems (needs repeated presses to get it to work). I'm wondering if anyone else is seeing this? Seems very convenient timing for Apple...

I used my original iphone for three years without issue.
Iphone 3gs for two years, now it is being used by my sister-in-law, still no issues ( almost three years from purchase)
Iphone 4 for a year and a half with no issues.
Ipod touch for 3 years, no issues.

Iphone 4 manufacturing defect detected after warranty runs out

I have had my iphone 4 since launch 18 months ago and now the sleep/on off button has become stuck. The Apple store said they charge £119 for a replacement.
My iphone 4 is in great condition, no marks or wear etc so this is obviously a manufacturing defect. Especially when I typed it into google I found out its a very common issue as many owners have reported it.
I cannot believe Apple are not admitting its their fault. Like when the phone first came out they blamed the antenna issue on customers not holding their phones properly...
I will never pay £119 for a replacement just to fix a button that is likely to break again and when it is not my fault.
There is also no way to contact Apple UK to complain, instead they charge people £25 for a one off incident phone support.
what I'm I to do now?
Well I have learnt my lesson and thats the fact that Apple are not as good as they are made out to be ESPECIALLY in terms of their customer service.
Even though I really want to get the iphone 5 when it comes out I will try my best not to as I fear that the level of quality of Apple products are very poor. I will have to start researching Blackberrys and Nokia phones for when my contract expires next year.

I to0 have the same problem. I went to my local Apple Store today and was indeed given the same response: £119 to fix the problem, for a replacement. It is also 18 months old and no blemishes.
Now we all know Apple only give you a one year warranty wheres as most other companies give you two years. I understand you can purchase apple care but as I like the orional OP handel my goods with care I dont see the need for this. The sales of goods act as well as the EU directive states that a product has to be 'fit for purpose'.
'The UK Sale of Goods Act already offers us protection against faulty goods even when the manufacturer’s guarantee has run out and says that goods must last a “reasonable time” – which can be claimed anything up to 6 years from the date of purchase.'
Now if my phone had a smashed up screen and the button was broken off by throwing or dropping it then yes i epect to pay but simple wear and tear after 18 months is unacceptable, and to charge £119 demonstrates the lact of respect Apple has for its consumers. They may be the genuis bar what we are not mugs.

Gmail to Macmail - Has something changed in last 4 days?

I use Gmail for my mail. In the last 4 days Emails from one of my customers are coming into my MacMail with only the subject line showing up but the body of the email is blank except for the company logo. These emails have been showing up fine for the last 3 years. If I go directly to my Gmail acount the message is there with all the information. Has something change? I have contacted the customer and nothing has changed on their end and since it shows up in Gmail I would think it is on Macmail's end. Has anyone else had this issue?

I use an iPod nano 5th generation. I have had it for about two years now and after about one year, I plugged in my iPod into my computer to sync more music. Here is the problem: The tab where you go to sync music to your iPod and shows the list of artists and songs you want to sync to the iPod, the tab I can get to but the list of songs and artists does not show up and the only way I can sync music to my iPod is to basically wipe my iPod and start from scratch. Obviously, I do not want to do that because I do not have all the songs in my library that I have on my iPod. I have uninstalled iTunes and then re-installed it, but it did not work and I do not know what else to do. I would really appreciate helpful guidance to get it fixed if it can be fixed. ST03N, make sure you are in Expert Mode (not Service Engineer)
Expand Workload
Expand Total
Double Click on the day you want to analyse
You can see transaction details under Transaction Profile -> Standard
You can see what tx a user has started under User & Settlement Statistics -> User Profile
If you are not seeing any data then speak to your Basis administrator about what they are doing with the log files.
