Motherboard or CPU?

My faithful Pavilion DV6-1210sa failed suddenly the other day – the Caps Lock key is blinking steadily, which I’ve learned from this forum suggests CPU failure. I bought a used CPU (the same kind!), and installed it – sadly no change. I am a computer engineer, so competent to do this properly.
I suppose the 2nd CPU might just be faulty too, though bought from a reputable seller, and taken from a working machine. Or… is it more likely to be the motherboard? I imagine the tests the board runs to activate the diagnostic codes are fairly rudimentary, so perhaps not 100% accurate, but you tell me!
Thanks

Use the blink codes on this HP web document to determine what has failed. The blinks are normally a repeating sequence.
Did you try a hard reset before replacing the CPU?
1) Remove the battery and unplug the DC power adapter.
2) Press and hold the power button for more than fifteen seconds.
3) Plug in the DC power adapter (leave the battery out for now)
4) Press the power button

  • [SOLVED]-Upgraded motherboard and CPU-UUID error?

I upgraded (replaced) my motherboard and CPU-from a dual core to a 3 core AMD.  Still on AM2 socket with DDR2 memory.
Arch-Fallback boots fine.  But my normal Arch will not get to drive checks and boot.  The errors allude to Arch wanting to change drive UUIDs but failing.  It ends with a command ramfs$ prompt-but keyboard input does not work at it...even though keyboard in BIOS works fine
Any theories how to get the regular Arch to boot?  This bug is the only real problem with the process-I haven't done anything else to prepare or finish the upgrade.  And as I said Arch-Fallback boots and works beautifully.
    Errors say:
    Loading filesystem module
Attempting to create device '/dev/disk/by-uuid/blah blah blah'
ERROR; Failed to parse block device name for '/dev/disk/by-uuid/blah blah blah'
ERROR: root fs cannot be detected
happens 3 times for each of patitions mounted on system at boot.  The root UUID I know exists, as it is in GRUB to load Arch to begin with.

  • Is Firmware chip on motherboard or CPU board?

On a Gigbit Ethernet Power Mac G4 and a Cube for instance, is the firmware chip located on the motherboard or CPU board? I want to put a Dual 500 CPU board in my Cube. The G4 tower firmware is 4.2.8, while the Cube is 4.1.9. Probably won't matter, I was just wondering where the firmware resides. Thanks!

The computer's firmware is stored in a chip on the motherboard.

If you used the original power lead then the new PSU would fail too...same with the adapter.
I have seen 4 way multi adapter fuses go often if the total load exceeds the rating of the adapter, and with PCs needing more and more power, this is getting far more common recently.

  • Get NI RMC 8355 motherboard and CPU serial number programmatically

    Hi all,
I need to read the motherboard or CPU serial numbers of the NI RMC 8355 programmatically.
I have tried to use "wmic baseboard get serialnumber" comand in cmd, but it returns "0123456789", which apparently is not a valid serial number.
Does anyone have any idea how I can read that information?
Is there any toolkit or LabVIEW VI which will do that job.
    Thanks in advance.

    Gevorg,
This is a Windows property that you can access the same way you would with a desktop PC, using the 'wmic baseboard get serialnumber' command.

  • Possible motherboard or CPU malfunction

So my girlfriend's iMac has been acting really strange lately. Unfortunately, unless I know what's actually wrong, there's little I can do to help her over the phone. She lives 100+ miles from the nearest Apple store and she's out of warranty, so no help there. This also happened rather spontaneously, and she has encountered 0 issues before the symptoms listed below.
Symptom 1: Built-in iSight camera appears disconnected (neither Skype nor Photo Booth recognize it)
Solution 1: I tell my gf to restart the computer.
Symptom 2: Computer hangs on restart.
Solution 2: Reset SMC (unplug and hold power button for 5+ seconds; plug back in, restart)
Symptom 3: Computer boots, but takes 5 minutes to finally load up.
Solution 3: Verify/repair disk permissions (tons of stuff was wrong, not everything was repaired); restart computer
Symptom 4: Computer takes 5 minutes to boot again. Computer now fails to recognize both the built-in camera AND a USB printer
Against my recommendation, the computer is plugged directly into the wall with absolutely no surge protection; to make things worse, she lives in an old building with ****** wiring in a remote part of town. Also against my recommendation, she has no backup disk whatsoever, making file recovery a chore (I'm REALLY hoping there's a way to fix it that doesn't involve reinstalling the OS from scratch). Lastly, I've told her to take it in to have its innards dusted, but no such luck; there's probably a huge fur ball from her cat clogging the heat sink for all I know.
I feel this is a motherboard or CPU issue, but have no way of testing either hypothesis from 250 miles away. Anybody know what could possibly be wrong?

I am thinking it is the hard drive, have her start her computer with the original DVD that came with the system and run disk utility on the hard drive make sure all items are repaired.  Also have her repair her disk permissions.  She needs to purchase a external hard drive to do a time machine backup as soon as possible.

  • Move Windows 8.1 Pro Hard Drive, Graphics Card and Programs to New Motherboard and CPU

Want to move everything, hard drive, installed programs, video card, network adapter, ram drive, DVD, from one computer to another, nothing will change except motherboard and CPU.  Old motherboard and CPU will be installed in a new computer case which
will revert back to a Windows 7 Pro computer with a fresh install and no programs to be used as a dedicated CAD work station. Motherboard and CPU swap will be the only change, even the RAM will be the same.  What activation problems will I encounter,
I do not want to re-install anything, if possible.

    Hi,
I would like to confirm what kind of licensing you used on Windows 8.1, the OEM or the retailed.
For the OEM one, the Windows 8.1 transferred to another new Motherboard will not be activated.
For the retailed one, you should find that the system will boot with the new motherboard, install some drivers then boot successfully.
You will need to use telephone activation for the updated system, but should not need to re-install. When warned that you need to activate, select the "Contact Microsoft Customer Support" option and follow the instructions. With a tone dial phone
you can do this without speaking to anyone. See http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/24636-activate-windows-8-phone.html

  • Can i take out the motherboard and CPU and replace it with a newer one?

I was wondering if i could take out the CPU and Motherboard of an early 2011 13" macbook pro with a 2.3GHz dual core i5, and replace it with a 2012 2.9GHz 13" dual core i7? I don't care about the costs but i just want to know if it's possible? I've upgraded my computer to the max so far, but i need some more processing power and i think the new ivy bridge processors will do me some good. Thanks for any replies

    NOPE.
    I'm about 99.9% sure it won't fit.
Plus the rest of the stuff won't plug or won't be compatible.

  • Let's talk motherboard and CPU in simple English please-

I am a home enthusiast/student (signed up with a popular web site) that loves all things Adobe. I have the Master Suite. I love Premiere Pro (can’t wait to learn After Effects). I have a consumer-grade AVCHD video camera from a ‘big box store’.
I don’t care about having a gaming rig or overclocking, or learning about RAID, or a huge/heavy computer case in my tiny office. So the minimum number of drives will work.
I have been watching Newegg TV and the ASUS guy nearly put me in a coma with all the acronyms.
I want a ‘middle of the road’ rig.
Can someone enlighten me on the following:
    Sandy Bridge vs. Ivy Bridge?
    LGA 1155 vs. LGA 2011?
What does this mean: “Onboard Video Chipset: Supported only by CPU with integrated graphic”? This is a common note on the motherboard description on the website.
    SSD caching?
    Thanks.

    Hello @jgarner,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I understand that you are looking to upgrade a few parts on your desktop computer, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
All of the recommendations I can suggest are purely based on the motherboard that came with your computer. With this said, the upgradable options for potential processors are as follows:
(while these processors may not have applicable parts for the HP PartSurfer, they can be acquired by 3rd party vendors)
AMD Phenom II X6 10xxT Six-Core (Thuban core)
AMD Phenom II X4 9xx/9xxe/8xx Quad-Core (Deneb core)
AMD Phenom II X3 7xx/7xxe Triple-Core (Heka core)
AMD Phenom II X2 5xx (Callisto core)
    AMD Athlon X4 6xx/6xxe (Propus)
    AMD Athlon X3 4xx/4xxe (Rana)
    AMD Athlon X2 2xx/2xxe (Regor)
AMD Sempron Single Core 1xx (Sargas core)
The upgradable memory you can install on your computer are:
    Dual channel memory architecture
    Two DDR3 DIMMs (240-pin) sockets       PC3-8500 (DDR3-1066)
           PC3-10600 (DDR3-1333) 497157-D88
    Non-ECC memory only, unbuffered
    Supports 1GB, 2GB, and 4GB DDR3 DIMMs
Supports up to 8 GB on 64-bit systems (DIMMs run at DDR3-1066)
Supports up to 4 GB on 32-bit PCs
*32-bit PCs cannot address a full 4.0 GB of memory
    I hope this helps!

  • HTPC Mini-ITX motherboard - Which CPU/APU to choose?

    Hi there!
I will soon start to build a HTPC setup, which will be used for 1080p (H264) playback through the onboard HDMI port, as well as audio playback through onboard toslink S/PDIF.
What to choose, Amd Fusion or Intel Atom /w the ION 2 GPU? I expect that the GPU part will be able to handle most of the H264 decoding, and that the platform will be stable and fully functional.
I already own a Asus E35M1-I mini-ITX motherboard which i currently use for my headless file server, but it seems to be somewhat unstable, and the network interface is missing some throughput (550Mbit/s). This causes uncertainty about if it is smart to choose the Amd Fusion setup.
    Any input/tips?
(This is not strictly related to Arch Linux, but the system will run Arch Linux, so i guess it should be okay to ask here in this forum)

As for your problems with your Asus board, is your BIOS up-to-date?
Sadly there are no BIOS updates other than the version shiped with the motherboard. I think I will just have to wait and see if Asus releases a new version. I will take a deeper look into the article tonight, thanks for the link!

I don't think you can choose a wrong solution these days. All the recent chipsets are perfectly capable of decoding 1080p. I myself am an intel-gpu-fan, because of the good and open source drivers. If your pc will be positioned in your living room, you should definitely investigate the noise levels of the onboard fans, PSU fans and case fans (not to mention the noise of the hard disk(s)).
That's why I have chosen to make my file server (which is in the basement) play/decode all the content and stream it over the network to a PS3, but there are many passively cooled DLNA-clients out there...
Regarding noise, i will probably use a cheap SSD/my old 4GB CF-card as local storage, and the motherboard will be one of the fanless versions. External laptop-style PSU. The noise level will not be a problem.
Regarding a pure DLNA client: I want to be able to do other things on the HTPC in the future. And for now, it will in addition to XBMC run MPD for music and LIRC for IR remote control support. If i just wanted it for video playback, i could have easily gone for a DNLA set top box with a lot less hassle

I'm considering an E350 setup myself, especially since the Intel offerings do not support 24 Hz, and that's a showstopper for me. That would mean either I'd need to get an Atom/Ion combo (which is too underpowered for my taste when it comes to the CPU) or get a Sandy Bridge with an nVidia card, which means higher power usage. From what I gather, Zacate should be a bit smoother than the Atom setups, and a bit more power-efficient as well.
Clvn, if network performance is your concern (and I doubt 550 Mbps is a bottleneck for what you're doing, but then again, I don't know what else your setup is doing while it's streaming HD stuff), there's only one solution: get an Intel gigabit card. Or you can go for a full Intel platform as well though, if that 24 Hz problem is not an issue for you.
I did not know anything about the 24Hz frequency limitation, I have not paid any attention to it. I think i will have to read a little bit about it. Thanks for the input about that!
SInce the E350 platform performs better, it's sad that it seems a bit unstable (at least that is my experience so far..). Hopefully this will be better with driver updates.
About the network speed: That motherboard will continue to be used as a file server for a while longer (with the onboard NIC), untill it will be used as a dedicated firewall with a dual gbit NIC (at least that is the plan). The 550Mbit/s throughput is not a problem, but it seems a bit strange that it does not perform better. I've changed the TP and the port at the switch, but still got the same available bandwidth. That too will probably be fixed with either a BIOS update or a driver update.

And zenlord made me remember to ask you what you will use the HTPC for, since in some cases a networked media player like a WD TV Live! might suffice, too.
I will do some reading at phoronix about the AMD Fusion driver support. And regarding devices like WD TV, i would like to have a fully functional pc. MPD and LIRC will be used on regular basis.
After all the feedback in the thread, i think the Intel/VDPAU option will be a lot more safe and stable. I will just have to read a bit about what the missing 24Hz support from Nvidia's side.
If i choose Intel Atom/ION, i think this Asus card will do the trick: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_ … /AT5IONTI/
Thanks for all the input so far, guys! I really appriciate it
