Motherboard Suggestions

i think my mb is giving up on me here  (asus a8v socket 939). Asus is the only motherboard ive ever had .. thinking about getting a different brand this time. all i do is regular user stuff [got another arch running as server ], firefox, thunderbird, mpd, rtorrent, gaim, samba, cups, ntp, irssi thats all the programs ill ever use on this machine, got AMD 64 X2 3800+ with 2Gb of memory with audigy ls, 2 USB HD, USB mouse/keyboard, 7in1 card reader, Pioneer DVDRW and LG DVD drives, 2x250Gb 1x80Gb all SATA HD and a 450W PowerSupply in the case .. this is whats going to be connected to this computer. so please help me with getting a new motherboard .. anything but asus

I used to use asus as well, after going through their customer support, which is horrible, I decided to go with another company. I decided on abit. I have a very similar setup to yours, I ended up getting the abit an832x, the only problem with that board is that I needed to upgrade my graphics card to a pci express 16 card. I think this a good idea considering the current agp boards out there suck. If you just want onboard graphics I suggest looking into what abit offers for in that category. Since getting my abit board I have been a very happy camper, the

  • [915 Series] Motherboard Suggestion Request (P4 840 D)

I am looking for any recomendation on a motherboard.  I am looking at purchasing the Intel P4 840D processor and I want to know what MB would be a good one.  I would like to find one with AGP as my video card is AGP, or would it be best to eat the card and upgrade to PCI-Express?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.  (Also is SATA backward compatible to IDE so I can re-use my IDE HDD?)

Don't pick up any 915 series boards for P4 840D. You should pick 945, 955 and 975X boards instead. Go for Intel chipset boards, don't go for NForce4's as yours is a Pentium D.
Do you have a 550W power supply?
SATA is not compatible with IDE. For IDE, you must plug into an IDE port, you can't plug to a SATA port. But the good thing is, you don't need any driver for SATA.
You must go for PCIe card as these boards only support PCIe.

  • Dual i7 (8-core) RT system motherboard suggestions?

    Greetings LV Community,
I need to duplicate a Dual Xeon (8 core) RT-PC system that we built a few years back. The motherboard we used has become obsolete, so I'm looking for a replacement motherboard that can handle two i7 quad-core processors.
I'm aware of the app notes on the NI website that list compatible chipsets and individual system components that can be used for a custom RT PC system (--this is how we built the last system). However, I also remember a few "gotchas" along the way before we got everything working as intended.
I was wondering if anyone has recently built an 8 (or more) core RT PC, and if they have any recommendations (or cautions!) with regard to the current options for motherboards and/or component selection?
    Thanks,

Thanks for the info about the i7s. Perhaps this is why all my web searches for dual i7 motherboard options kept coming back with pages and pages of single socket motherboards...
(As you probably can tell, custom RT builds aren't my first integration choice. However, it doesn't appear that NI offers an 8-core PXI controller... yet.)
The previous system was originally a single quad-core Xeon system -- later upgraded to a dual processor configuration to enhance throughput. The Tyan motherboard sported a complete set of NI-friendly chipsets, but it is now obsolete.
I was hoping to get some feedback from folks who have recently built an 8-core system -- Xeon would be fine too.
    Thanks again,

  • X99 Motherboard Suggestions Requested

    Hi
I'm putting together a system for ae and ppro. I think I'm settled on a 5930k, a GTX 970, 16GB ram to start (expanded when i get more money/when ddr4 prices come down).
What board would people recommend ?   I'm partial to asus, but I see that there are other x99 boards that take up to 128 GB ram, while all the asus boards only take up to 64.
Also, are there any particular ssds and hds that people would recommend ?
Do you guys think that a mobo's built-in raid controller is good enough or would you recommend a separate controller card ?
    Thanks a lot in advance.

Since X99 mobo's all have 8 DIMM slots, the claims of 128 GB RAM are based on the assumption that there are 16 GB sticks available. That still is a dream and if these appear on the market, they will be astronomical in price, while at the same time force the price of 8 GB sticks down.
Asus X99 DeLuxe and WS are popular boards. Good SSD's are the Samsung 850 Pro and the Crucial M600. Good HDD's are the HGST Ultrastar and Seagate Constellation ES enterprise drives. A dedicated raid controller is faster than on board, gives less burden on the CPU, has bigger cache and offers parity raids. Raid5 on-board is no good.

Firefox 3x was released in July 2008 and is no longer supported. You'll have to upgrade to a later version, preferably the current one which is 8.0.1. Be aware that if you choose to install an older version, then you'll be exposing your system to the exploits documented these release notes: http://www.mozilla.org/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox.html#firefox8
You can download Firefox 8.0.1 from here: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/fx/
After you download that, could you please follow instructions in this thread to uninstall, then reinstall Flash as your issue may be due to file corruption if you didn't disable your security app before installing Flash: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4081633#4081633

  • What's the Dream Video Editing PC?

What suggestions would readers have for building a solid video-editing PC for home use.
Where are the key bottlenecks and where should the money go. Ideally I would like to end up spending less than $1,000 US on motherboard, processor, case, memory &  HDDs, the rest I have already:-
    - What aspects of a motherboard would make a particular difference (bus), any specific motherboard suggestions welcome
    - Is there a noticeable difference between say a Pentium 1.6Mhz and a Pentium 2.2Mhz or is money better spent on a better motherboard that can shift bits (e.g. is the processor or board typically the bottleneck. How do Athlons compare to Pentiums for video editing?
    - Can twin 7,200 rpm IDEs do the job? (one to run the OS/temp directory the other for the output video files) or is an expensive SCSI disk and and card worth the outlay. Which IDE HDDs work best?
    - How much memory is adequate/desirable/optimal - is DDR worth getting
    - I'm assuming the video card makes zero difference, but please correct me if not the case.
Any recommendations of a motherboard/processor/memory/HDD combinations most welcome. I intend to build myself and buy a DVD burner down the line .Thanks,
    [email protected]

    1,000$ isn't much.
Dual AMD board (~230$) (MSI K7D Master for example)
Dual AMD MP 1800+ (~2x200$) - You need to be sure
your software supports dual CPUs or you will waste the 2'nd CPU.
    2x512MB DDR - Registered ECC (~2x200$)
    2xW.D 80GB JB (8MB) (~2x120$)
    Some large MIDI tower (~50$)
Antec 430w PSU (~100$) - You need to make sure you buy a board compatible with standard ATX 12v
    1420$ :(
You could scale down to a Nforce board with 1 CPU and save 400$ and non ECC/registered RAM to save about 400$.
In video rendering/compression and filter applying the CPU speed is almost liniar to the preformance meaning 10% more CPU speed is 10% less time.
he VGA cards needs no 3D capability, but should be able to handle high resolutions with high refresh rates while keeping a clear picture.
Matrox G4xx/5xx or a built by ATI card will do the job (Nothing fancy, just a Radeon 7xxx or).
Video editing needs lot's of HDD speed, so if you can afford it an IDE RAID card that supports RAID5 together with 4 W.D 80GB JB drives would be very nice, but that would cost alot (still a fraction of SCSI).
SCSI would have limited advantage over IDE RAID in your case because in terms of drive speed the W.D drives are close to the best SCSI drives. SCSI takes the lead in conditions where you access many files silmunaiosly and frequently.
VIDEO editing is a leniar proccess accessing very few very large files so SCSI has no real advantage and it costs 4 times as much if not more.

  • Building a system: Which motherboard do you suggest for PP ?

    Hello,
After some serious thought, I'd decided to stick with an Intel quad core chip: Intel Core2 Quad Q9450 2.66GHz 12MB/1333FSB S775 CPU
Can anyone suggest a good Asus motherboard to pair this cpu chip with ?
    Thanks,
    Dave.

    Hi Jim,
Thank you for the info. I did some checking, and I think I'm
going to go with this model in that series:
    http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=572&l4=0&model=1872&modelmenu=1
This seems to be the most expensive of the series, with built-in wifi, and some other stuff.
    Seems like a nice board.
I'm thinking of going with 4 gigs of ram, if I go with Windows XP Professional, the computer and PP will be able to use all of this, is that correct ? / and there is no use in buying 8 gigs of memory at this time is there ?
    Dave.

I am unable to connect wifi on my phone 4s since last 2 weeks... I am living in shanghai and did not have this issue since 2 weeks... iPad works fine... Please suggest some measures... Tried the on off reset settings etc. but no luck ...
In fact after updating the software to the latest version I am having more of this... Sometimes the wifi button freezes an I can't even slide it to on / off...
    Thanks

Noooo! Actually I too had d same prob wit my iPhone 4S. When I connect to my wifi network it won't get connected or it wil be grey scaled! I took it to d istore and since I had warranty they replaced my IPhone. It iPad charger has high volt than ur iPhone charger so when u connect wit it, there is a chance where large amount of current passes thru ur iPhone. So for sure it wil damage ur motherboard and its parts! Many said that iOS 6 or 6.0.1 or 6.1 was d reason for tis wifi prob! But apple never made its mistake wit it's software. If and only if u hav hardware prob u wil hav these sort of wifi prob Bluetooth prob! So best way s to replace ur iPhone!

  • Hi,please suggest me some games for Compaq CQ62-105TU Laptop. Can I upgrade my laptop's graphics card

Hi,please suggest me some games for Compaq CQ62-105TU Laptop. Can I upgrade my laptop's graphics card

Unfortunately, you cannot upgrade the processor or graphics card on this laptop.
Here is a page from CPU-World that gives the specs for your processor:
    http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Bobcat/AMD-E%20Series%20E2-1800.html
You will see down near the bottom of the page that it is not upgradeable. Some laptops come with the processor soldered to the motherboard. Almost all laptop graphics are this way. The only way that you would be able to get a faster processor/better graphics for this laptop would be to purchase a brand new motherboard. You can do an Ebay search for 'HP G6 motherboard' to see what average prices are if you want to go this route.

Hi,  I am curious...  A recent class action suit ruling caused HP to open a 90 day window for a Limited Warranty Service Enhancement Program (LWSEP) for select problematic Pavilion Elite PC's  The models above are involved.  My refurbished m9650f has the Pegatron, IPMTB-TK TRUCKEE-UL8E version 1.04 motherboard (Not the newer 1.04E01) many people on various forums have complained about.  However, when I called to avail myself of the motherboard replacement, I was told by the HP rep that based on the product number and serial number I gave them, my m9650f was not one of the affected PC's they were recalling.  Despite the fact that I told the rep that my m9650f froze and had BSOD death issues right out of the box and for months I have read various forum threads and tried the various fixes suggested, i.e. replacing HD, RAM, updating drivers, various hardware tests, BIOS updates, etc.  Right now I have revisited turning off the IEEE-1394 Firewire port via the BIOS as suggested by Big Dave for the last few days.
I'll let you all know...  UPDATE: So far 15 days and counting...  No issues.
If ultimately turning off the IEEE 1394 Firewire port in the BIOS actually resolves my computer issues longterm,
does this not demonstrate there is something wrong with my motherboard version 1.04?
One would think all implimented ports should work and not have to be disabled to keep the computer stable?
(Still have need of a Firewire port though...)
    So I am curious...
Speaking to the people who did avail themselves of
this Limited Warranty Service Enhancement Program...
Is your Pavilion Elite refurbished or original retail?
What was the manufacturer, model and version number of the motherboard in the Pavilion Elite PC that you turned in for motherboard replacement and what is the manufacturer, model and version number of the motherboard in the Pavilion Elite PC you got back from HP?
Also, is everything working properly now with your replacement motherboard or are there new snags?
Thank you for your time and feedback.

  • Photoshop CS4 x64 Crashing on a super machine. Any suggestions will help.

I have installed 64bit Photoshop CS4 on Vista X64 Ultimate to go along with a setup among the following lines
    Some Asus Motherboard
    Inel Xeon E5410 2.33ghz
    32GB of Ram
    NVIDIA 9800 GT
    And  WD 500gb HD
First, Photoshop is not working as fast as I was expecting and not as fast as I need it to. Also, the main issue, at very random moments It freezes and then I have no choice but to close it. I also have a Wacom Tablet from about 3 years ago but with the latest driver. Sometimes, the mouse pointer will freeze for about 5-10 seconds and then resume. The work is very important here and I have no Idea what to do. I've done a lot of research on this and nothing concrete. I've tried installing Photoshop on different accounts, enableing OpenGL and disableing it and no luck. I will also add that I am working with massive files, anywhere in the range of 5-8 Gigs. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
    Best,
    Mikhail

Did you update to PS 11.0.1 and get the latest drivers from the nVidia web site?
Are you aware of the pixel size limitations in different file formats?
Is the Wacom otherwise OK in the 64-bit environment?

  • New Memory Recognition Problem - MS-6704 V2.1 845PE Max3-FISR motherboard

I have just purchased a 1GB DDR (PC3200) memory module from Crucial after using their downloaded software to examine my system and recommend compatible upgrades.
    Before this I had 512MB DDR (PC3200) - also from Crucial - in slot 1, 256MB DDR (PC2700) - original - in slot 2 and 256MB DDR (PC2700) - original - in slot 3, 1 GB in total and all working fine.
I removed the 256MB module in slot 2 and replaced it with the 512MB module from slot 1. I then put the new 1GB module in slot 1.
The system is now only recognising the new 1GB module in slot 1 and neither of the other two modules, so I still effectively only have 1GB of memory.
I've used system info software which recognises and provides details of each of the modules in the new arrangement on the motherboard and memory testing software supposedly across all three modules which returned 100% success.
The Crucial self testing software indicated that 2GB memory was the maximum permissible with my motherboard and recommended removing all of my original modules and replacing them with just two 2GB modules.
Is it possible that my system will only recognise modules of 1GB capacity in pairs?
Your help/advice would be most appreciated.

Hello NovJoe and thanks for the reply.
I do have only 3 slots, so presumably I should simply try your suggested arrangement with just the 3 slot positions:
    Slot 1: 1GB
    Slot 2: 256MB
    Slot 3: 512MB
I had always planned to achieve only 1.75GB, rather than splash out on two 1GBs.
Is this simply randomly placing the RAMs to see if they will work together or is there some logic to this? Is the mixing concern related to capacities or PC**** ratings or something else? I had a similar mix of either before buying this new RAM and they worked fine together, although admittedly there wasn't the range of capacities I'm now trying.
There seems to be 6 position combinations; is there any point in trying all of these before getting Crucial involved again? I always understood that one should start with the largest capacity RAM in slot 1 and progressively move along the slots with reducing capacities.
Nobody tells you that RAMs should be very similar in, for example, capacities or indeed placed in certain configurations before they will work together. What is the technical reason for this restriction on RAM module use?

  • Satellite L300 suddenly stopped working - new motherboard needed

My Sat L300 suddenly stopped working the other day.
It kept freezing to start with, then nothing at all. So, I kill-disked the HDD and tried to re-install Windows (XP).
During the install it threw up a message that some internal components had been incorrectly installed and needed to be reinstalled.
I was told to remove the memory cards and re-seat them.
That did not work. I thought that perhaps the HDD was damaged, so I fitted a new one, and started to reinstall Windows.
Once again, same message. One of my colleagues at work suggested that the Motherboard was probably U/S.
So I have been trawling the .net to find a replacement. Laptop out of warranty! I am told that some other serial numbered motherboards will work with this laptop. Don't really want to get a motherboard only to find its never going to work! My unit has an SPS number of: V000138330.
I am being offered one with an SPS of: V000138390.
Any ideas? Will this one work?
And if it does, will it give me the functionality that I used to enjoy?!
Sorry for the long sob story.
    Any advice gratefully accepted.

    Hello Andy
Sorry but can you tell us more about your notebook? which model do you have exactly (L300-xxx)?
    Do you have European model?
    Has your notebook valid warranty?
Maybe I have misunderstood something but why you want to exchange mainboard if the warranty is probably still valid?

I was using the computer 2 weeks ago, I was in the middle of a game when the sound became choppy. Closed the game, returned
to desktop (BTW: Windows XP Pro, Service Pack 2, ALL UPDATES).
The PC was SLOW... The MINIMIZING and MAXIMIZING ANIMATIONS were being RENDERED FRAME BY FRAME!!!!
    What the heck is wrong???
    Decided to restart...
    Shutting down...
Windows closed itself, left the wallpaper only and stayed there...
    Mmmm...
Pressed the RESET button... NOTHING HAPPENED!!!!!!! WHAT????????????????
    RESET BUTTON ALWAYS WORKS!
Held the POWER button... Computer didn't go off..
Oh no.. something's odd.. Shut the computer off by switching off the PSU.
Turned it back on, pressed the power button... NOTHING.
ATTENTION! Current is being drawn thru the MOBO since the Ethernet's card LIGHT IS ON (constantly GREEN).
Started messing with it.. Cleared CMOS.. Nothing... Took battery out... Nothing.
    That's odd.
Took all the PCIs out, disconnected hard disks (both power and data cables), NOTHING!!!
Left the RAM, THE AGP CARD, and the CPU... Hit the button, NOTHING.
    Why is it that!!!
Took ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL the parts out, sat it on the living's room table... connected the basics. (RAM, AGP, CPU) Jumped the "power button" with a screwdriver... it went on.
Connected the power button... it worked.
Then I assembled the computer again... works like a charm.
UNTIL LAST NIGHT... Same symptoms... slow rendering of 2D animations... tried to restart... nothing happened.
    Computer didn't go back on...
I just don't feel like taking everything out again because I dont' think that is the PROBLEM, nor is HEAT because I let it sit OVERNIGTH before trying to turn it back on and even then it wouldn't go on.
ANY IDEAS ANYBODY? Could HEAT be an issue? Could the "coolCore" chipset be telling the MOBO to SHUT DOWN due to something?
I consider myself an EXTREMELY advance PC USER and technician, All I do is out of experience, and I'm only 19.
Sorry for such a sloppy post but I'm in the office and my lunch time is over...
I will be replying any questions later on, YOUR HELP IS DEEPLY APPRECIATED!!!
    Thank you!!

    Yep, I edited those.
Let me tell you that I have NOTHING to borrow or test with. I'm pretty much all by myself on this. Not even another PSU.
If the CPU is cooked, it wouldn't have powered up the first time this happened right? What I'm saying is...
This happened to me a few weeks ago... Taking evertyhign out got it fixed and got the computer back on...
Therefore, no component can be burnt since the computer worked before!
I have a feeling it's the board and let me say what...
I got it wet the first day I installed the water cooling system. :( Sorry!!!
I accidentally powered it up... Of course nothign blew up, it just didnt' boot. I had to let it dry for 48 hours and I even used a hairdryer to help out. Only then, I could put everything back in the computer and turn it on. That worked.
    Maybe it's wet again?
A water leak in the system?
    Something ODD:
You know like when you turn the power supply off and hit the POWER button in the case EVERYTHING goes ON for a fraction of a second and then dies.. Well if I do it, nothign happens! Only after a couple seconds later will the power be drained by itself. Weird.
I have tried to unplug everything one thing at the time and try to turn it on everytime I disconnected something. Nothing helped.
I'm pissed because I think I have a good system... And THIS computer behavior is something I have never seen in my life.
I DO NOT want to think water is the problem...
How will a computer react if it gets WET while it's on?? Blow up? Shut down automatically? Keep working until it's turned off?
    This is juuuuust weird.

Hi all. I'm new to this forum and hopefully some of you can help me. We have a photography business and recently bought a new custom built PC. It has the following specs:
Intel Core 2 Duo (Extreme Performance) Platform
    Asus P5KC Core 2 Quad/ Intel P35/ DDR3+DDR2/ CrossFire/ A&GbE/ ATX Motherboard
    Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q9300 2.5GHz 1333MHz 6MB LGA775 EM64T CPU, Retail
Antec Sonata III 500W Quiet Super Mini Tower Case (Piano Black)
    4GB (2x2GB) PC6400 DDR2 800 Dual Channel
    Samsung HD753LJ 750GB SATA2 7200rpm 32MB Hard Drive
    Lite-On LH-20A1H-185 LightScribe 20X DVD+/-RW Drive (Black), Bulk w/o Software...(2)

We also have a USB 2.0 Seagate external harddrive that we keep most of our photos stored on. We move them to the harddrive before working on them. We are using Photoshop CS3 adn would like to make the program as fast as possible. I have read that having a second hard drive dedicated as a scratch disk will help immensely. My question is this. What type of drive should I buy? Also, I have a Maxtor DiamondMax 21 200GB UDMA/100 7200RPM 8MB IDE Hard Drive I may be able to use as my scratch disk (not sure if connections will work with this motherboard though). Would I see any significant performance boost by using this IDE drive as my scratch disk or would I better better off sticking with my current internal hardrive stated above? I'm not against buying a good second hard drive but don't want to if this IDE drive will work. If a second drive is recommended, what do you guys recommend given my current setup?
I would like to setup the machine with Raid drives and all that, but I don't know enough about how to do that I don't think.
Any suggestions? Also, one last quick thing, I sometimes get the scratch disk full error and sometimes CS3 just crashes. It also is slow sometimes. Please help. Thanks everyone!!!!!!

Do you suggest anything else in addition to getting a Sata drive? How big a drive do I need?
As much as I would love to switch to vista 64, your talkign about a significant investment. I did however ask for a motherboard when my cpu was being built that can handle both vista 32 and 64...so I have that covered. However, I don't feel like shelling out a ton of $$$$ on PS 64, Lightroom 64, vista 64, and any other program that is currently 32 bit on my cpu. That seems like alot bigger investment than I'm ready to make. ALso, I doubt all the bugs are worked out of 64 bit software as of right now. I ordered a floppy disk drive just to have it as I find they don't scratch as easy as CD's...lol. Also, they are just big enough to hold important docs such as password lists and stuff.
Thanks again and I welcome any other suggestions from anyone else as I'm new to the technical/cpu aspect of photoshop. Thanks!
