Motherboard voltage throttling?

When I play a game, if my Alienware (late 2014) model with Nvidia 860M GPU
is not plugged in, the monitor goes dim and the USB ports stop providing voltage to external devices, the system then recognizes this as an unplugged device... This is *NOT* a system issue, as I have thoroughly checked the system settings and ensured that the system is not set to dim screen in the event it is unplugged from the AC Adapter, could this be the motherboard cutting back on the voltage being used to power the monitor and external devices? (in this case 1 mouse was connected via USB dongle)
Does anyone have any similar issues, or is this outside of the norm?
Thank You

Preliminary test results are in: It can be seen below, that the GPU usage drops significantly right about the time that the USB ports stop and the screen dims.
EDIT: this is inconclusive, as the GPU drop could be a result of exiting the game soon after screen goes dark. Further testing is needed, while staying in game for prolonged periods of time to give accurate time representation of issue.

  • Confused about motherboard voltages.

    Hi,
I have a query regarding my motherboard. I am using a Corsair HX520 psu on the msi neo4-f. when I check the motherboard voltages they are
    +2.5v = 2.58v
    +3.30v = 3.3v
    +5v = 4.87v
    +12v = 11.75 (can drop to 11.65)
    +5v standby = 4.89v
Checking the voltages with a multimeter whilst running various stress tests for harddrives, graphics card and such, the voltages are solid at 3.3v, 5.02v and 12.05v for the 3v, 5v and 12v rails which is perfectly fine. I assumed the problem was with the motherboard sensors so to test this theory I tried a different PSU, a 400w colorit (cheap brand). To my confusion the voltages for the 3v, 5v and 12v rails were 3.06v, 5.02v and 12.11v. Testing with a multimeter was a little lower but the voltages were perfectly acceptable. Could somebody help me understand what is going on. Is my corsair hx520 faulty? if so, how if all the voltages are solid. If it helps I did swap out the 7900gs for a very old pci card and the cheap brand of psu was single rail, whilst the corsair is triple rail.
    Any input would be appreciated.
    Thanks

one step forward, two steps back.
You said it wasnt the psu
and judging by those temps, what do you think is overheating.
" You said it wasnt the psu"
You can't conclude PSU fault based on voltage reading in BIOS, also you have done measurement and voltages appear to be ok.
So based on that info PSU looks to be fine.
If you have shutdown problems, the only way to find is it PSU or not is by testing with different PSU and to see if the problem remain.

  • HP PAVILION ELITE e9120Y

    Hi,
My HP PAVILION ELITE e9120Y was constantly crashing, freezing up. And I tried to do a restore, that never worked since day 1.
I tried reformatting the hard drive, first by using the F11 key, then the restoration disks, and niether work.
sometimes I get a message, "reboot and select proper boot device - or insert boot media in selected boot device, and press a key".
Other time I get a message error #1002.
I have a 3 year service black tie protection plan, but if its not the hard drive...then it will cost me over and above what I paid for the insurance. I am already past the 1 yr manufacturers warrenty.

I have the same...DId you upgrade to windows 7 and if you did the best thing to do is reinstall WIndows 7? Do a clean install.  Just insert the disc before windows boots, may have to change boot priority under bios shows key to press to enter bios, after windows 7 installed key may be another F something not F9 or F7 like it says, just have to try til you get to it.  Make the DVD/CD drive boot priority instead of HDD.  Can't remember if you hit the key to skip or use the disc.  Its one way or the other.  Doing a clean install will wipe everything...but is well worth it.  I do not have any lockups or freezes like I used to.  Windows Vista was bad...I got the free upgrade when I bought mine and Windows 7 was terrible at release I had blue screens of death, and freezes like you said...even in Vista.  Solution was months later with updates...unfortunately windows 7 was still messed up so a clean install fixed it.
So get a hard drive copy files you need then proceed with the clean install.  Time consuming but worth it.  Also I do not recommend updating the BIOS if you think that will fix it you can try.  I've tried reinstalling the BIOS over again thinking it might re-write whatever got messed up.  All I know is the CPU fan and motherboard voltages are messing up a lot...I used a software program to give readings and it shows it changes CPU and fan speeds randomly like reving up a car.  I've requested older BIOS to fix it, but HP won't give it and can't find older ones anywhere.  I've complained also...my warranty expired just a few days before this BIOS update.  Don't recommend 5.08 BIOS.
Also a few things to note...HP power supply isn't powerful to use all USB's at once...bought a USB Hub with multiple ports and a separate power supply adapter that plugs into it.  PC can be off but charges USB devices.  Mine crashed with too many USB plugs.
Also upgraded to Seagate Hybrid drive 500GB really fast now since its part Solid state drive...now 1TB is storage.
I use system mechanic software as well...works wonders for the PC($20 a yr,virus protection in it too)...just be sure to disable Security vulnerabilites as repair option or hide as problem...gave me all sorts of visual problems, apparently media players are hackable and need to be blocked according to the software.  All fixed once I found out what did it... Other then that I have my system running really, really well, besides the TERRIBLE BIOS UPDATE HP GAVE ME AFTER WARRANTY AND HASNT FIXED.

  • Multimeter and CPU-Z Vcore readings vary

    hello again,
Funny enough I got my digital multimeter connected to the motherboards Voltage Check Point to check it out.
I have the P67A-GD65 and i7-2600K @ 4600MHz and my issue is that I set the Vcore to 1.345 manually, but the actual Vcore is 1.352V according to bios and CPU-z. However the multimeter is showing 1.360-1.362V.
When prime5 is running the Vcore in CPU-z goes up to 1.392V at which point the mutlimeter is showing 1.403V!
Why all those readings differ so much?

  • Big problem with AE CS3 - abnormal  slow with nvidia 8800 GTS 512 !

I try everything, newest drivers (nvidia 8800 GTS 512), older drivers, beta drivers, alternative drivers, uninstall QTime, disable OpenGL in After Effects, delete openGL plugin.... Simply, did not help. AE CS3 is abnormal slow, type text, draw and edit mask, any kind of moving element , moving windows (interface).... everything. When turn on openGL, openGL work fine, fast, smooth., but non openGL operation (written above), still the same! I did some test and found that similar problem have with encore (not my primary application, but...). Other programs work perfectly (premiere, photoshop, illustrator). I have core2 quad 6600 @ 3 GHz, 3 GB RAM, 8800 GTS 512 @ 2560 x 1600, win XP pro strong configuration but unusable for AE CS3!!! I try to reduce resolution, but also, did not help.
Please, is there anyone with some solution? Is problem with AE or drivers? Thanks.

    >My 8800GT is not going to work with AE and it's listed under Adobe's
    >supported graphic cards????
That's premature to say. Please understand that in the OpenGL game there are just too many varaibles, a lot of them outside the control of Adobe or any other software vendor for that matter. Please consider the following:
    - if tested, a card is usually tested in one configuration available at the time that presumably will be the most common one bought by users. There is room for better sub-versions (more VRAM, higher memory clock), as well as weaker ones (less VRAM, lower clock speed).
    - the previous applies to the host computer. Nobody can test the 100 new different motherboards that come out every month let alone all that are already on the market. Same for RAM, processors, other peripherals.
    - multiple vendors may produce cards based on the same design, but may use different BIOSes and branding
    - even under ideal conditions, a given graphics card will be tested in about 30 different computer or so - some in Adobe's lab, others with Beta testers. As it stands, neither of them will necessarily coincide with your configuration nor will anyone throw a lot of money out of the window just to buy a hundred new testing machines...
    - BIOS configuration, motherboard voltage fluctuations, PCI timings and whatnot can vary from user to user and thus have drastically different influence how a certain component behaves.
    - lastly, driver configuration can vary. Even with seemingly the same driver version, the config may auto-adapt to different settings based on the environment it finds.
So given all of the above, please understand that this is a *******' tough job and by all rights nobody intentionally tries to scam users or something like that. You will also find it hard to blame anyone in legal terms, as you usually agree to use the software "as is" - with all it's flaws. As David says - please try first. We will gladly try to help you sort out any issues and who knows - none of the problems affecting other users may come down on you and you'll be a happy camper after all.

  • NForce 5 Temperature is a bit high..

Just installed nTune 5.05.18.00 and noticed a VERY HIGH chipset temperature and strange temperature graphical chart.
    Here is a screenshot.
162°C is quite a bit. I remember reading about this here, I think, but can't remember what was said. Anyone know if this temperature is correct and normal?
Also, can anyone recommend a good temp/fanspeed/voltage monitoring program that works with my motherboard? I use SpeedFan but it doesn't report every voltage. Not that they are accurate (so they say), but still..

I'm pretty sure ntune doesn't support that board (no MSI nv board has been supported fully by ntune before), so just forget about those readouts .

im having problems where the computer goes through a strange boot cycle
a friend sent in their a6200n to me to fix because the comp freezes up (its using all the ram available)
i add 2 ram chips to it and the comp now wont get very far past the bios (as soon as i select an option to start the computer normally or otherwise it resets)
i removed one new ram chip after trying multiple patterns with all four chips in the four slots (old, old, new, new; new, old, new, old; and so on) and tried booting the comp that way. i got all the way to the login screen before the blue screen of death showed up
if i was at my old job id try the power, reset the motherboard, and so on just going down our checklist of steps but i no longer have the tools and thus the luxury to do so so can you please tell me what is the most likely to check next?
    thanks again for your help

    Hi eprice809,
Since you are out of warranty and you believe it is a mechanical problem (power button), have a local, reputable PC sales and service shop take a look.
If you are handy you may want to open the case and remove the front bezel after powering off and removing the PC's power plug from the AC power outlet. Please ground yourself prior to touching internal components. Check wiring connections on the power button and the motherboard. The problem could be mechanical or electrical. Be careful, motherboard voltages are lethal!
HP introduced this model in 2007. I doubt if you could find an HP replacement part using HP's Part Store or Partsurfer.

A WORD of warning.  Most overclock manuals are for high BENCHMARKS only and not really practical for daily use.  While OC a fx8350 on this motherboard may result in high Clocks ie: 5.0ghz or more, and that is awesome, but the tuning to reach stable oc's such as that may result in component failure due to heat and voltage spikes(for this mobo).
The advice given to reach these levels is based upon terminating power saving features and turbo core tech.  If you read previous posts you will see those features are what help minimize the issues of the voltage spikes that will aslo correlate directly to Heat.
So while OC and if you follow these manuals, find your highest OC stable and then set Turbo to that Multiplier and make your initial multiplier a few levels lower ie:  5.0ghz turbo  4.4 or 4.6ghz initial.  And turn on AMD Cool&Quiet, this will lower your multiplier to X7 under idle and light loads, reducing heat and lowering power consumption.
Again my advice is real world, Benchmarks are for bragging rights.  You really think those guys that got 8.something on an FX8350 run it like that everyday... NO.  it hit that for a number of sec and then shut her down.  LOL
ps  This was not directed at Principle just an adendum to his/her post.  They give great advice and are quite helpful..

  • What voltage from the motherboard?

In order to use FCP X, I had to upgrade my video graphics card from the original one that came with the Mac Pro (first generation, 2,1).  I bought a EVGA 8800 GT board on ebay and also bought the necessary 6-pin power cable.
I installed the board in the same slot as the old card and turned the Mac on.  Immediately there was a loud, high-pitched whistle which wouldn't go away until I turned off the computer and removed the card.  Then I realized I had forgotten to install the 6-pin PCI power cable from the motherboard to the PCI-e card.  I pulled the original card out again and installed the Geforce 8800 again, this time I plugged in the power cable to the 6-pin output on the motherboard (very hard to get to.  Too bad you can't pull the fans out like you could with the G5.)
When I powered up again, the same loud whistle.  I contacted the seller and he suggested that the whistle is a result of the card not getting power. Although he offered a refund, I told him I wold try again and would also test the cable and see what voltage (if any) I am getting out of it.  He also suggested to try the other output on the motherboard.
My question is this: what voltage should I expect?  What should I see as the output voltage?  Also, is there a difference between the two outputs on the motherboard?
    Thanks
    B.

you would need to use a card with Apple ROM though I don't know any success stories using an EVGA 8800GT.
It isn't a matter of power as long as you hooked up the two 6-pin power cables.
for FCP-X, the Apple ATI 5770 is probably more but works fine as is. $249.

  • AM3 motherboard with DDR voltage headroom

    Hi All,
I found some very nice DDR 3 RAM that runs at 1.90 volts (OCZ 4GB DDR3 PC3-10666 Kit ReaperX HPC SDRAM Memory Module OCZ3RPX1333EB4GK) and although I tried to install it on my present motherboard, the computer ran like it was straining to suply the RAM with enough power. My motherboard tops out at 1.9 volts, the memory's stated required voltage.
    So, my question is this:
Does MSI manufacture an AM3 motherboard that has plenty of spare DDR voltage headroom so that it will handle this power hungry memory without straining itself or other components?
I thank you for your input and look forward to your answer.

Hi Henry and Bernhard, thank you for your input...it's much appreciated!
Anyhow, I bought the OCZ memory in questiion for a 970A-UD3 motherboard, I found it attractive on account of its very tight timing (6-5-5-18) and didn't stop to consider other factors. I also was deceived by the name of the manufacturer (OCZ) and thinking that they wouldn't sell a product that not only was way out of the DDR3 specification, but could also damage your motherboard and other components.
In the final analysis manufactures that should know better do produce misguided and dangerous products and not all that glitters is gold.
I installed this particular memory on a motherboard and then observed it struggling to work with it. I then removed the memory because I felt that leaving it installed was only going to invite damage to some of my other components.
I then came to this forum to investigate and you've confirmed my feelings about the memory.
    Thanks!

  • What is the max voltage rating for motherboard on Satellite 1110?

what is the maximum voltage rating for the motherboard in the Satellite 1110 please?
Because my current cpu (1.5ghz celeron) is 1.025 volts and i would like to change the cpu
to something faster (cooling will be dealt with btw XD)
The only problem being that the new cpu needs 1.3 volts to run.
Any info wud b much appreciated

I had the same machine years ago and I suggest you no to do this, because nothing will happen.
We tried to put a another CPU onto Mainboard and it simply didnt boot. I dont know why it didnt work, but luckily the machine started after that with the old CPU on the board again. I assume that the chipset is not giving enough power to CPU. I assume, when youre putting the wrong CPU on the Board then you, in the worst case, seriously damage your Mainboard.

  • P965 Neo2 (MS-7235 Ver. 2.1) missing 12V voltage and high motherboard temp

    First hello to everybody!
I had to use an old P965 Neo2 (MS-7235 Ver 2.1) to build a pc for a customer. The BIOS is the 3.8 . It is using an C2D Quad Q6600 and 2x2GB Kingston Ram on 800MHz. It actually works good, but there is something that looks strange to me. There is no 12V voltage shown anywhere, not in BIOS, not in Core Center. The 5V and 3V voltages are fine ...
Though Everest Ultimate reports 75-77 degrees celsius at motherboard sensor. Though no reboots or whatsoever ... In Bios temps are normal, system 33, CPU 35 ...
Is there someone who still uses that board, or had it, who can give me information, if there was 12V voltage reported in BIOS or somewhere else? And if someone else has seen such 75-77 degrees C on motherboard??
Because I will have to send the PC to the customer later, I just want to be sure and if needed to change the motherboard (I know, this is always a solution). Just do not want to bring expenses to him if not needed.
    Any information is appreciated!
    Thanks a lot in advance!
    Best regards,

goxon, thanks for your reply. It is seems that nothing can be done at present. So today I bought ASUS MB on G41 chipset (with ICH7). Of course it is not so good as P965 (ICH8), but there no another cheap solution for my Intel Core 2 Duo E4600.
It is also terrible that official support doesn't confirm or disclaim defects in this MB series. Suppose that in future I will avoid MSI products.
I beg to differ on this point. Your system is already more than 2 years old, reaching 3 years before the issue appears. It will not be a surprised if hardware fails due to usage and wear and tear (electronically) by self.

  • Software to change USB voltage on Gigabyte motherboard

    Hi, all!
I need a program/driver which could change USB voltage on the fly. I need that due to iPad 2 which says "Not charging" when I connect it to my PC. I googled and find out that iPad requires higher current in USB port than most motherboards provide.
In this thread a tool for ASUS motherboards was offered but it's for Windows only. The fact that such a tool exists makes me thinking that it could be implemented for Linux too.
    Thanks.

    Never mind, it's ok.
Actually, I accidentally told you wrong information. When I decided to find out exact motherboard model, I realized my motherboard is ASUS P5PL2. Sorry, I had to check that far before starting the thread.
However, I have kind of good news. Here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1504845) someone solved the problem on Ubuntu 10.10 x64 and offered a small program which enables iPad charging on PC. For those who might read this thread later I provide direct links to it:
    Page with the program
Direct link to zipped deb file
    Direct link to source code
Unfortunately, when I connect my iPad and start the program, it says:
    [bz@bolt ipad_charge]$ sudo ./ipad_charge
ipad_charge: no such device or an error occured
I'm not sure, but I guess this might be related to the problem I mentioned two days ago.

  • MSI motherboard Fan headers safe voltage loads

I`m wondering what the safest Voltage/Amp/Wattage load is on these headers.
I have a lot of case/Cpu fans all with different current information, but not sure what is safe to use or not on the headers.
The coolermaster neons are marked as DC12v - 0.16 amp, my thermaltake`s are marked as DC12v - 0.18amp and just found one made by Y.S Tech marked as DC12v - 1.92 watts.  And as for the CPU fans any thing from DC12 - 0.12 to 0.38.
I assume that the lower the amperage the better !
It may be a idea for MSI to include in the manuals a safe range of volt/amps loads for these headers.
And I wish more fan manufactures would supply a 12v molex to header adaptor (most do), but leave the sensor wire free, so you could if you wanted to put that to the header on the mobo.
