Motion 3.0 disappointment

I just read in the Motion 3.0 Supplemental Documentation PDF that lights DO NOT cast shadows! I can't believe it.
Oh well, back to After Effects...
2GHz dual G5 (rev2)

Well sometimes yes sometimes no. Shadows can be a big part of creating depth (the illusion there of). You can do a lot of interesting things just by moving around in 3D space and using lights can add to compositions even if you're not seeing the effects of shadows but sometime the interplay of shadow and object is just what your looking for.
We've all seen the large letters on a ground plane with the single spot light sweep across it. And we really get the feeling of depth because of the long shadow cast behind the letters moving in conjunction with the light. Now I suppose that you could add a behavior to the drop shadow position parameter to move with (but opposite from) the light - I don't know. This would be a lot simpler if the program did it for you.
I'm still excited about this hole update (templates in FCP...nice) just a little disappointed about the shadows.

  • Good afternoon, I take the program and it is closed automatically. send me a solution. thanks

unloading Final cut pro X and I install it, soon unloading motion 5 and I install it, when starting final cut pro X everything goes well but motion 5 is disappointed and it is closed unexpectedly

Run Disk Repair to "repair" all hard drives on the system.
Be sure you have at least 8GB RAM realistically.
Be sure your grahics card is compatable.
Digital Rebellion makes a free application called Preference Manager that allows you to trash the application preference files safely and properly, try running that.

  • New To AE from Motion (FCP) - timeline and other questions (PREVIEW)

Okay, so like your normal person, I just install and open a template and delve into it seeing what can happen.
So far, I learned that you need an update for macbook pro (opengl), no problem, downloaded and all is fine.
However, I did notice something that coming from a Motion POV, I am not used to....
If I open a template, I notice that the time line plays back about 200 milliseconds or 5 seconds to play about 1 second of video. Is there a way to make it realtime? Also, it seems as if it needs to be rendered when you play back on the timeline (green bar). Is there a way to play in realtime? Surely the newer Macs are fast enough to play back in realtime.
Last, for now, what is the best training for this application? Lynda.com, books, other video resources?
    Thanks.

    >I think that makes sense since it is going to RAM.
Yes, it does. To not "loose" the frames, enable the disk cache. This will dump frames that cannot be held in RAM, so they are available for spacebar playback and faster generation of successive RAM previews
    >Nonetheless, regardless of the settings, I could not get it to play in >realtime at all.
Check the info panel and see if indeed it is as you say. If the issue persists, search this forum. There is tons of things that can screw RT abilities from incorrect graphics card configs to audio or certain QT CoDecs.
    >Surely this can't be the case is it?
It can. Once more: you are letting your confusion get in the way of seeing things for what they are. AE is a program that still does most of its stuff in software running on the CPU, not your graphics card like it does in Motion. It functions on different principles. Effects have to explicitly be written to use hardware acceleration, which only a limited number of them do and then again, they will revert to software-only mode if you stack a number of effects that exhaust your graphics card resources or combine them with non-accelerated effects.
This is no different than what happens in Motion when you use a given number of layers with blendmodes, distortion effects etc.. that can no longer be processed in realtime. At that point it actually behaves much worse than AE since it lacks the fallback software routines. It seems, that you just never work with anything remotely complex and thus never have reached that point, which would explain your disappointment and frustrations with AE. If you are not willing to understand the conceptual differences, it will forever be that way.
I can only once more urge you to not see as a replacement for Motion as a background and title generator, but as a flexible, resolution independent compositing and effects package that does so much more, but at the cost of buying this flexibility with more generalised, software-only routines. You may see this differently and never use AE as deeply as some other people, but this is just how it is.

  • Really disappointed with the Macbook pro

    Hi all,
I purchased a Macbook pro in the middle of January 2011 with some inheritance money. I went for the cheapest one - was going to go for the white macbook like my partner but thought it would be worth the extra money to upgrade to the pro. It was the first time i had made the move from PC to Mac, but was fairly familiar with the systems having owned an ipod touch for a while and my partner also having a macbook.
4 months on...and i have to say I am really really disappointed with my Macbook pro and certainly not worth over £1000 i paid for it. This is mainly because:
i find that after a while of watching movies (15 - 20 mins), the video starts to "stutter" and the mouse jumps when i try to move it. I thought this was only the case on flash-based websites (like Youtube - although there is no problem on my partners basic macbook) so installed click2flash. I have since come to realise that it also happens whilst watching DVDs etc. I also thought it may be when the battery is low, but it happens even when it is plugged in. I cant understand how it happens on mine but not my partners even though my Pro is supposed to be a high spec (isnt it???)
I use Garageband and often record myself by mic input over the top of backing tracks that i import into the program. I have to record with no effects on my voice to begin with whatsoever , nor the backing track, and have to minimise the garageband window to the dock as when it is open and scrolling, i get the "Part of the project was not played. This project has too many tracks, effects, or notes to be played in real-time." error.
The other day, i noticed my macbook pro would not burn CD-Rs (both music Cds and MP3s) and later realised that i could burn anything up to 6 or so tracks (about 20-25 minutes worth of audio). After trawling the forums, trying slower burn speeds, different brands of CD-R and lens cleaning cds (which froze in my macbook) I still have a faulty disc drive. I have now discovered that the end tracks of some audio cds i have will not play so is obviously something wrong with the drive.
I'm very frustrated and can't help but wonder if maybe i should have just got a £500 windows laptop instead!
Any help and feedback would be much appreciated. Are Apple Support good at dealing with stuff like this? Am i best calling and discussing over the phone or taking it in to a Genius bar? I have also ran all the latest software updates.
    Thanks!
    Tom

    >the video starts to "stutter" and the mouse jumps when i try to move it.
That's the fault of the video format you are viewing.  It probably caches itself to the hard disk, and the sudden motion sensor gets triggered by the hard drive, if you give it any innertia.  You could create a RAM Disk with any of a number of solutions you can Google.
And DVD drives don't like being bounced around.   See what I have to say about CD failure below too.   Anything can cause a disc to get unbalanced, and not play back right.   I would not attempt to play DVDs while the machine is in motion, as you can damage the DVD drive of any machine that is.
Garageband has its own forum here: https://discussions.apple.com/community/ilife/garageband where someone can tell you if there is a setting you missed to improve the recordings.
CD Burning is a menace throughout the industry because a lot of media is not very high quality.  See my FAQ*:

  • Creative Live! Motion Supp

I don't tend to post in newsgroups because I rarely feel I have anything worthwhile to input, but I feel this is pretty worthwhile. I've had Vista Ultimate RTM installed for some time now and whilst I was very pleased with it, I was unable to use it as I use my Creative Li've Motion with Skype to speak to my girlfriend overseas. This was incredibly disappointing. I contacted Creative a number of times to try to get more information on why there wasn't yet a Windows Vista driver for this, what I would consider very new and expensi've, webcam, why it would take until the end of 2007 to produce a driver and why their Vista range wasn't even compatible with Windows Vista (clearly a case of 'cashing in' in my opinion). Anyway, I accidentally forgot to select Windows XP in the boot loader today and ended up in the long forgotten Windows Vista installation. I decided to take a look if there was any update to the driver release schedule but?to no avail. I then thought I'd have a quick check if anyone had maybe created 'homebrew' drivers, when I found the following post:http://forums.creative.com/creativel....id=387&a#M387?I decided that this was probably untrue as I'd already tried the XP drivers but I thought I'd give it a shot. Low and behold IT WORKED!?Why hasn't creative made the fact that the XP drivers now seemingly work available on either the Vista compatibility chart or elsewhere on the creative site?I'm losing steam for this rant now but rest assured I'll be avoiding Creative products like I would a dose of gammy, rampant knob rot. First of all, this is a user-interaction forum, not a support forum. If you need support, then you need to contact Customer Support. The forums say this in red at the top of the listing:

Now, have you tried checking to ensure you have the required 500ma of power (full USB spec?) Some laptops cut power to the USB to save battery life, but this will also cause the cam to not detect. You can usually enable USB Keyboard or USB legacy support to get more power.
Next, check in your Device Manager to see what your display adapter is. If it's a ATI Radeon series 200, you probably have a certain ATI chipset on your motherboard that's known for not having 00% to spec USB ports, and they don't work with some of our webcams as a result. More information about that is in our knowledge base, Solution ID # 7557.
As for the rest of your post, there is no reason to attack and threaten Creative. We provide multiple channels of support, so there is no reason to behave this way. Please try to be less ab-"noxious" in your posts, and you may find more people are willing to help you.

  • Does anyone know how to create algorithmic/fractal art in Motion?

I reciently found out about the Electric Sheep screensaver (example here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVD67pMdv9k) and it has inspired me to try to create similar imagry from scratch in Motion. The problem is, I havent used motion in a few years and even when I was using it, I was not very creative with it (mostly text and lower thirds).
As you can see from the video, it is very interesting background stuff which seem to be somehow generated from algoritms. I would like to do something similar but slow it way down and let things slowly organicaly morph. I would like the end product to be very high quality (i am seriously thinking 4k) so it can be projected on a large scale.
So my questions, does anyone know where I should begin to research to create something like this? Is motion an acceptable program for this type of work? Also, if I experiment within a small project size in motion (like 720p), can the same project be upscaled and re-rendered later at 4k resolution?
Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks all!
(I am not affiliated at all with Electric Sheep, just a fan of abstract computer imagery)

Up front I would say the short answer is "no"... but the long answer is "sort of".
Replicators are part of the Fractal "arsenal" and Motion definitely has those, but I think you would be very hard pressed to come anywhere near the type of fractal imaging as in the Electric Sheep example.
I was able to squeeze the following out of Motion (the base element is a simple square), but by the time it got this far, Motion wouldn't play faster than about 1 frame every 5 or so seconds. At a certain point, you end up having to render movie files in order to see it in action (and that took Motion about 8 minutes for a 12 second project [09 iMac i7].) [If you're interested, I posted a short video of these here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6Fe_ydfAss. The segments are longer than 12 seconds each because these are designed to loop @12 seconds and each one was looped more than once.]
[You asked the question on the 4th - I "finished" this on the 7th... (I admit to several "false starts")]
If you have a faster mac than mine, you might be able to do more than this... and you really don't have access to the Maths that fractal apps have, so depending on your creativity for devising the "root" motif element you may (or may not) be disappointed in what Motion has to offer (it *will* try your patience!) If you would like to experiment anyway, I will explain some of the techniques I used for the above (which are, at best, rudimentary!) Once you get the basics down, you should be able to take off in your own directions.

  • Import templates from Motion 4 into 5

Has anyone been able to import the templates from Motion 4, particularly the Broadcast Video ones?

I've come to a couple of decisions:
I am not buying FCP X until they fix the many issues...that is another story but very related to this one...Apple is actually refunding customers their money for FCP X...so you know that is bad for FCP X
I am using Motion 5 only if iI have to in certain project when need to.,.
The speed has not change in Motion 5, but I think you have to have the new  Lion install to see the difference with that... will see...
The is no more Live Fonts in Motion 5
Motion 5 does not get along with FCP orFCP X (you can't send project to Motion anymore)
You can only have one project open at the time with Motion 5
The templates are there and you can get to them but is such hassle just to open them up with motion 5...
I have drag Motion 4 back to my apps bar and will continue working with it along with FCP7...
    so disappointed...

  • Where is the Motion Interaction Panel?

It does not magically appear as suggested when I select a motion tween object or in the timeline. I would like to add some custom bounce easing. Seriously disappointed in Creative Cloud Flash.

Great – I downloaded Flash CC back in May so I guess it didn’t have this yet. Just downloaded the 2014 ver and it shows up – thanks, Peter.

  • Slow Stabilize Motion. Any better Premiere plugins?

When I press Proceed Forward after setting my tracking points etc in the Stabilize Motion box in AE, the process proceeds at an extremely slow rate - a few frames per minute. Then, after a while, it picks up, starts playing the video in slow motion, but stops moving around the tracking points. When it does this, the confidence metre is at 100% - even though in reality the feature box has gone off, sometimes way off. And then AE is really slow to responding to my pressing Stop.
I'm running a high-performance machine; Premiere runs great. I realize video playback in AE, which is not optimized for it (that's another thing - even when I turn down the playback res it still says it's not playing back at full 29.97 fps), is maybe gonna be worse, but we're talking molasses slow here with the Stabilize Motion function. I'm trying to get Adobe to upgrade me to 5.5 so I can use the Warp Stabilize function, but so far I'm disappointed with AE's performance, and disappointed with the results of the Stabilize Motion even when it works well (I'm dealing with shaky camera footage). In my old Premiere (circa 2004 - cs2, I guess?) there was a 2d3 Motion stabilizer effect that you could just apply directly to the video. This plugin was a demo, but it worked like a charm - much better results with a few clicks than what I got out of AE after several long attempts.... Apparently 2d3 doesn't offer this for Premiere anymore - or not at least, anyway, without a chunk of money. Well, I just blasted a big chunk of money into the CS5 Production Premium. Maybe I am just impatient with AE stabilization's higher learning curve, but I'm disappointed that Premiere CS5 doesn't have a comparable function as the old Premiere did - a function which was damned easy. Any advice?

The larger the search area the slower the tracker will run. Make sure you're not tracking more than you need to track. In most cases you'll get a better and a much easier to work with track if you use Mocha. It comes with AE and there are a bunch of tutorials out there on how to use it.
Mocha is a planer tracker, AE's tracker is a point tracker. Both have their advantages, but there's nothing that I have found that will track or stabilize with AE's tracker that can't be tracked more accurately in Mocha.

  • Where can I get Motion 2.1 Update?

OK, so I used to have a Mac G5 and it broke down so I bought a new Mac Pro with Intel chips. Now, I bought Final Cut Studio and my version of Motion 2.0.1 crashes with this new computer after I select the size of my project. I called apple and they mentioned an update, but its not to be found. Does anybody have it? or know where I can find it? Please contact me!!
    rikky6

He says he didn't now about it. Did Apple send him an email?
I knew about it because I read the news. I didn't update because I had a G5, so I didn't see the point. Had I known that 2.1 projects can't be opened in 2.0.1, I would have paid for the dot update.
Had I known that Motion 3 would be bug-ridden and dog slow, I would have known that I would be running Motion 2 on a future Intel Mac and would have paid for the dot update.
It's disappointing that Apple doesn't still offer the update. There's no excuse for this other than Apple wants me to buy FCS 2.
It's disappointing that Motion 2 doesn't run in Leopard. There's no excuse for this other than Apple wants me to buy FCS 2.
Defending these draconian tactics of Apple doesn't do the Mac base any good. If Microsoft pulled this, we would all criticize it, and rightfully so.

  • Motion 3 still freezing after after MBP Software Update 1.1

I have just started to use Motion 3 with my new Hi Rez 17" MBP and had a couple of occasions where Motion would freeze completely with the only option being to turn off the MBP and reboot it. I checked the Motion discussions and found that a lot of people had been having trouble with Intel MBP's and Motion after software update 1.0. I was pleased to hear that software update 1.1 was supposed to fix the issues and duely downloaded and installed it.
However, in the past 3 hours I have been trying to work on a motion project (a pretty simple one at that) and motion would have FROZEN AT LEAST 6 TIMES. Disappointed to say the least!
Has anyone else with a similar MBP experienced the same issues with Motion 3 after installing software update 1.1? As it is Motion is next to impossible to use and because the app is not crashing I can't even send off a report to Apple.
    Cheers
    Pete

    Hi Jose,
Although we don't seem to be any closer to a fix, its good to know I'm not the 'Lone Ranger' on this issue.
A bit more info, in case somebody has any ideas. Since my post, at the suggestion from the guys I bought the MBP from I ran the Extended Hardware Test on the OSX install CD in case I might have some issues with something like the MBP's memory (I am running the full 4GB of RAM by the way). It came up completely fine.
Another thing is that I noticed today that there is a new software update available - the 'MacBook MacBook Pro Software Update 1.0'. It doesn't say in the notes that it has anything to do with any motion fixes but I found the naming convention a bit strange. Maybe this is normal but just because they stick 'MacBook' in front I would have thought Apple would have given a different version number considering MacBook Pros have already had a software update 1.0. I was wondering if I try to run software update 1.1 again whether this might have the desired effect but I think I am probably clutching at straws.
Any other feedback is greatly appreciated.
    Cheers
    Pete

  • Is my Sudden Motion Sensor too sensitive?

    Hi all,
every time I pick up my MBP or even if I just put my right hand down on it a little too hard the HDD goes CLICK.
It's not a concerning click, more like a loud reading noise.
But I think it's the SMS parking the head... I've had a MacBook with a SMS before and never noticed anything like this... anyone else getting this kind of behaviour?

I am having the same issue with mine. I have the 250GB 7200 hard drive. I have just turned off the motion detector. I am thinking that maybe the SSD would not have been a bad idea =).
I received the computer yesterday shipped by apple straight from china. I wonder if the people that add options get the stock that was on the first of the production runs? One would think that the "stock" apples move faster, and that any production glitches would be worked out. I hate buying the first on anything, I am a little disappointed. The machine freezes, it freezes completely, and about a minute latter it comes back to life, all for no apparent reason. But it sounds like the hard-drive is reading, or trying to catch up. I wonder if it is connected to this. I will have to give this a shot, as I do not want to waste my time driving back and forth to talk to some Genius. I will be saddened if I have to go through the exchange/return process. 2 days old..........

  • Problems handling motion in Compressor

    Dear All,
I was disappointed to find that Compressor did a poor job in two short sections of a dvd where motion was involved. Not ultra fast motion, just arm movement and a person moving in front of a bright screen in a dark room. I re-burned the dvd using Quicktime and the problems did not appear. I sent the file to Compressor from Final Cut Pro and burned it using the best quality video and dolby audio for a 90 minute movie. The over-all quality from the Compressor version seemed slightly better, except for the two short segments (about 5 seconds each) where the artifacts appeared when the movement occurred. Any thoughts as to what I can do to correct this, or is it a common problem with Compressor? Thanks for your help.
    Barbara

The preferences file is here: Your Home folder > Library > Preferences and is called "com.apple.compressor.Compressor.plist".

  • Iphone 4 can't reduce motion?

I recently updated my  Iphone 4 to IOS7, and while I over-all like the OS, I find it hard to use with the moving backgrounds and parallax screens. So, I played with my phone a little, but couldn't figure out how to disable these features, so I did some searching and found out it IS actually possible to disable by going to settings>general>accessibility and hitting "reduce motion".
and I'm sure you'll apprecite my woe when I discovered, the Iphone 4 apperarently doesn't have the option to disable it!
I understand that older models of phones won't have every feature newer ones do. I understand that I don't have siri, or AirDrop. However, I do not appreciate being FORCED to have a feature that causes nasua and motion sickness just because I have an outdated iphone.

HELP. I have the same problem. I just upgraded and I am sooo dizzy and getting a headache. I can barely even look at the screen. I have been searching for the "reduce motion" option and am so disappointed to just find out it is not available on the iPhone 4. THIS IS A TERRIBLE THING! APPLE: YOU ARE MAKING PEOPLE SICK! I was the biggest iPhone fan ever getting all my friends to switch. Apple: please help! We need an update ASAP or will have to switch to another type of phone

  • Jagged Text from Motion to FCP5

Hi.. still having trouble with jagged text from Motion 2.1.2 to FCP 5.1.2 (OSX 10.4.8), PAL DV 720 x 576. Would very much appreciate some insight. I have done a butterfly animation with some lense flares and text. Concept is butterflies come in from off screen and land on attractor to reveal text message with lense flare behind. Views great in Motion on fit to screen, resolution fine. But import as .mtn to FCP and text very disappointing, very noticeably having trouble with resolution, even noticeable on Viewer and Canvas, but really awful in full screen Digital Cinema Desktop Review because the text is so obviously not 576 lines. Something is happening in the import to destroy it despite trying everything I could see in this forum. I can actually count the lines on full screen, enough to estimate I am only getting approx 230 vertical lines instead of 576.
In both Preferences/Presets and Project Properties PAL I have set Broadcast SD 720 x 576, Pixel Aspect Ratio PAL D1/DV 1.07 , Lower (Even), 25 fps. Under Project Properties I have additionally tried 16 bit, and under Render, set anti-aliasing to Best, and tried switching on and off Dithering, and also increased motion blur to 50. I have also switched off interlacing (to None) in both Motion and FCP as one forum comment suggested. In FCP I import the clip as a .mtn file, and change properties to Premultiplied Black and Lower/Even line order prior to dragging into Viewer and then Canvas. But the Motion text already looks jagged in both these screens before I even render in the timeline. I learned a while back under Avid XPress Pro to give text gentle movement diagonally in order to create the illusion of higher resolution than if motionless. But once in FCP, it "wobbles" very noticeably as the application attempts to blur the distinction between the 230 vertical lines on the screen. As I mentioned above, it plays perfectly in Motion on a full screen, with no obvious degradation in vertical resolution, but it's very disappointing once in FCP.
In FCP I have tried just about every setting, but nothing so far addresses this problem. The main settings are 720 x 576 CCIR 601/DV PAL (5:4) Pixel Aspect Ratio CCIR 601 (720 x 576). I've been careful to also check Sequence Settings in addition to User Prefs, Audio & Video Settings and also System Settings. Under Sequence Settings/Video Processing I have tried RGB, YUV 8 Bit and high precision YUV in case that made a difference. I also did several exports to Quicktime .mov, including trying Lossless + Alpha, but no difference, and in any case that work around loses ability to update on the fly if something is chnaged in Motion.
Perhaps I have missed something obvious. I would very mcuh appreciate any assistgance before I go back and delete the text from Motion and do it in FCP instead. I really hope tht others have found solution which works within Motion. I have enjoyed crteating the animations and it will be a great product if I can do the text within Motion and export without loss to FCP.
    Thanks heaps...

Thank you so much for all your replies and interest in my problem - very helpful. I have just come up for air (after several long nights of editing) and the project went out on time, RUN LIVE FROM MY MBP. Your replies saved me a lot of time, pointing out that the resolution was actually ok (for SD), but I just wasn't seeing it on FCP because it was only showing one field, and scaled at that. I firstly tried playing back with the Canvas settings suggested by Mark and it appeared as smooth as it did within Motion. Then I tried viewing on an external monitor via Firewire - all resolution great (at least for SD).
Typically I publish on DVD, but the above tests gave me enough confidence to print to DV tape as a backup (and I loved the user interface - so easy to add bars and tone etc). But I took the risk of running my MBP live at the event, complete with my SATA RAID ) drives and the M-Audio 1418, which I found worked really nicely daisy chained off my DSR-11 deck. This produced far better sound for the live event and gave me enough comfort that I could always run directly off the DSR11 if any of my computer gear failed. The second advantage was that it allowed me to cue precisely synchronised with the live drama, from which the butterflies flew onto the screen - exactly on time as the talent opened the gift box on stage. If you've tried to cue from dvd or dv deck you'll know what I mean. Some consumer dvd players go to sleep if the standby period is too long, and the DSR11 creeps along frame by frame to save tape wear, which can really get in the way of live events. Also, I foudn that the DSR11 needs to be cued at time code prior to the intended start point in order to allow adequate sound buffering.
But with my MBP set up - it was the easiest incorporation of video in to a live event that I had ever done. It worked flawlessly - all I had to do was hit the MBP space bar as the talent guestured with her hand out of the gift box onto the screen - butterflies flying out exactly on time.
    Thanks again everybody.
