...MOTION 3 acting HORRENDOUSLY!

...stuttering and sticking playback of HD material 1440x1080. I imported a simple sequence from FCP and it is unworkable. Without even trying to apply effects it doesn't even playback well at all. The playhead moves but stuff in the viewer(reduce viewer window) just freezes up and jumps to catch up top the playhead's position. Unbelievably aggravating! Any theories on what the hay is going on? All settings double checked for compatibility the sequence plays perfectly in FCP. Thanks

So you're stating that MOTION 3 is not quite up to speed when it comes to handling HD?
No, that's not what I or David said. Motion handles HD quite well if your system is up to it. The problem we're talking about is related to HDV. You still haven't answered whether or not you're working with HDV.
If you ARE working in HDV, I suggest you read up a bit on the concept of long GOP. It's the reason that you can fit HD frame resolution onto a miniDV tape and the reason you can fit a 3hr movie on a 4.7GB DVD.
Long GOP is not really meant for editing though FCP and other NLEs have developed ways to do so. The structure of the format makes it so that programs like Motion may not treat it well. The solution is to get out of HDV by transcoding to ProRes or another intraframe codec. This can be done at the injest stage in FCP.

  • Motion 2.1.2 crashes, quits unexpectedly, seemingly at random

Bear with me, as I am a relatively new Mac owner; however, I did try to first find, and read, all of the existing posts concerning this same topic, beforehand. I thank you in advance your input, and will mark this thread as "solved" or "helped" if we can get this issue resolved.
I have a Quad G5, running 10.4.8 with 2.5 Gb of RAM, and using the GeForce 6600 video card. In the FCP suite of programs, I have had no problems running Final Cut or DVD Studio (can't say I have found a use for Soundtrack Pro yet).
Motion, on the other hand, has crashed a great deal, and with baffling irregularity. It often aborts on loading (I'd say about 1 out of every 5 of 6 tries to open the problem). Sometimes it crashes when I try to create a new project or open an existing one. In order to dedicate my resources to Motion, I have been closing all other programs before launching.
Other times, I have been working in Motion, and it terminates unexpectedly. This has yet to happen when working with text (unlike many others who have posted here about Motion crashing). Also, I am not using any 3rd party filters. Two of the most recent crashes happened after trying to apply the Basic 3D filter to a replicated object. Another crash occurred when I tried to play a 10 second clip I was working on, with the Light Streaks 1.mov in one of the layers.
Following the advice on the motionsmarts site, I have checked the "fixed resolution" flag of each layer as I create them. I have also been keeping the projects at 8-bit Bit Depth.
The following are some of the header entries in the Motion crash log from the most recent abends:

    Quad G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2.5 Gb RAM, nVIDIA GeForce 6600

Finally placed a call with Apple support, and they also recommended trashing my preferences. I tried to do that before, but I was apparently looking in the wrong directory (whoops). The correct library is user -> library -> preferences and then the file is "com.apple.motion.plist", just in case others are looking in the wrong location.
I am going to leave this question as unanswered for now, because I want to work with Motion for a few more days before I mark this as "solved". However, at this time, Motion has not crashed once, and I have been giving it a real workout.
The other recommendation from the tech, in case trashing the preferences doesn't work, was to remove the 2 Gb of RAM I added, and then use Motion for awhile. That will be my next step if Motion acts up any in the next few days of testing.
Some things to keep in mind if you are having the problem with Motion crashing:
    - Trash your preferences and then reboot
    - Try to remove any devices since the program last worked, and try Motion without them. If that works, then re-add those components and test Motion again.
    - Upgrade Motion AND the FCP suite (don't just upgrade Motion by itself).
    - Uninstall any 3rd party filters and test again.
These are just some of the recommendations the tech gave me. Like I've said, it looks like my problem has been resolved, but I'm not counting those chickens just yet. I will post again to this thread if it hasn't crashed in the next 5 -7 days.

I have an IPod Touch.   I never had any issues syncing music on it until now.  It goes through the motions, (acts like it's syncing), but there is no music on my IPOD now.  I do have a USB backup of all my music, put how to I get it back to my IPOD?

  • Help! Acrobat won't down sample documents, what is going on...

    Hi,
maybe someone out there has experience with this.
I have CS4, but Acrobat won't 'optimize' or export out of other programs with optimized settings.
It goes through all the motions, acting like it is doing waht it should, but ends up not effecting the file size at all.
Like it goes through and does all the thinking, but the result is no different, it's missing a crucial step at the end.
Is there a patch or something?
    Anyone else?
A few years back I had this issue at another job on a mac, but...i didn't fix it then either, just quit.
    I'm on Windows 7 btw.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,

Now the light is not blinking. It's a solid, consistant green. I don't know if it helps to narrow it down or anything, but I just figured I'd mention it.

  • Text Sequence Behaviors (Continuous) - Intermittent

Hi everyone! I'm not exactly sure what I'm doing wrong. I'm trying to apply the text sequence behaviour under the continuous menu called Intermittent. Applying this to my text produces two behaviors - Intermittent and Randomize Sequence Custom Speed. When I hit play, absolutely nothing happens. I can see the custom speed control in the Intermittent behavior jump up and down, but that's about it. What do I need to do to produce that cool flickering effect I see in the effect's preview window?
I should note that all the other continuous effects seem to work without touching anything.

It should work with the default settings when you apply the behavior. It is active for me upon application.  The fact you see the custom speed control moving indicates the Random sequence custom speed behavior is operative. You might play with the opacity and variance controls to see if that jump starts it. Also I would delete the behavior and reapply it just in case it didn't apply correctly. Is Motion acting strangly in any other way?

  • Motion/position acting weird

    Dear all.
I have a seriuos problem that I can't figure out. I have animatied a text that slides in as the movie run, but even though there is a keyframe that leads the text from left to right, then suddenly the text moves left-right-left, ant I really don't why. I have uploaded a screen recording, because it's a bit tricky to explain.
    Thanks.

  • Why are my tools like brush, eraser, pencil (basically any that you would use to make a smooth motion that would affect the layers) is not working and acts as if I clicked once and let go.  I have checked spacing and reset tools and brushes. Please help!

I haven't had issues with this in the past and I've checked the different modes the layers are in as well as the brushes are in.  I've also checked spacing to make sure it isn't wrong.  An example of what it is doing, would be to use the brush tool and try to draw a circle.  Normally, this wouldn't be an issue but the tool only makes a dot as if I quickly pressed and released tool, but I'm holding down to draw the image.  All tools that do similar functions such as blur, eraser, pencil, paint are doing the same thing.... Please help!!

    You're welcome.

  • Is Motion a total piece of garbage?

    What do you think guys?
Even when things are running well, there's always some weird glitch or system hang that makes this thing practicly unusable. Like continuous playback, even after the spacebar is hit or the mouse is clicked or the escape button is hit and I have to force quit. Sometimes it won't let me delete layers and I have to quit. Sometimes it won't let me copy layers, between projects and otherwise, and I have to quit. And gosh darn it, sometimes it just up and quits on its own.
There are a limited set of key shortcuts for navigating the timeline (1 frame, 10 frames, next and previous markers, jump to in/out point, jump to begining/end of project, that's it) No zoom in/out (moving the mouse pointer back and forth between that little slider is getting old), no jump to next edit, a hand tool for the timeline would be useful, no way to reliably go to the begining/end of a layer without using the mouse and shift key, and that mini timeline bar below the canvas is useless if your project is longer than a few minutes. Why didn't they just port over the navigation scheme from FCP and have a customizable shortcut layout and make it easy on everyone?
Why doesn't it copy and paste layers directly to where the playhead is, instead of where the layer was copied from? It seems like there is a lot of dragging and dropping necessary to make this program work and I don't know how the rest of you feel, but that's not really how I work.
No copying digits in the inspector to the clipboard, no way to reliably synch graphics to audio because of either audio or frame drop, and now I'm having a synch issue because Motion is incapable of a 23.976 fps frame rate, only 23.98.
This program has the potential to be a really great tool and I know that this is only the second version, but Apple has a bit of a problem with usablility, in my opinion. It seems like they want you to use their products a certain way and if you deviate from that, you will run into problems. There should be at least 3 different ways to do the same thing, like in Photoshop or even FCP for that matter. A lot of their interface design is dumbed down in favor of using a one button mouse all of the time instead of giving users options (context menus anyone?). Really, they should be jacking sucessful design concepts and packing them into every product they make instead of trying to reinvent the wheel every time. Anyone try and use Soundtrack Pro?
Oh, and if anyone has any answers to the issues I'm having in the first three paragraphs, any feedback would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

I see your point, but the tool is still very useful
to me. It's hardly a piece of garbage. I still use
After Effects 10% of the time, but Motion with it's
quirks has become my tool of choice for most stuff
    that FCP can't handle.
Maybe I just don't enjoy quirky software. I like it when it works the same every time, rather than trying to figure out what set of operations I just performed produced the glitch I have to deal with now, but thats's just me.
Here is one point that I don't understand:
I'm having a synch issue because Motion is
incapable of a 23.976 fps frame rate, only 23.98.
What kind of work are you doing where this causes the
sync to get messed up? By my math, your sequence
would have to be nearly an hour long before the
    difference would even express itself.
I have a five act doc that was shot in 24p DV, up-resed to HD at 23.976 fps and then down-resed to NTSC quicktime files at the same frame rate to be used as reference for the lower thirds I am creating. The acts range in length from 9 minutes to 30 minutes. The thing is that all they consist of is the base reference movie layer and either 1 text layer or 1 text layer, one still and one mask. Everything synchs up perfectly in Motion, but when I output just the lower thirds with alpha and then drop them into FCP and place them over the same reference movie I used in Motion, which is what is going to happen when the lower thirds are encorporated into the actual upres, the lower thirds don't synch. Specificly, one title takes place at 00:20:09:07 in Motion. That's 1809 seconds, 7 frames. At 23.98 fps that's 43386.82 frames. At 23.976 that's 43379.584 frames, a difference of roughly 7 frames, which means the lower thirds at 23.98 fps is going to shift forward 7 frames, which is about what I've been seeing in FCP. The titles occur later than they should.
The reason the project files are so long is because they have to be. I'm just doing the lower thirds and then handing off the output to someone else to be placed into the final output. There are at least 175-200 titles that need to be in synch and chopping it up and doing it manually after my output is a bit of a headache, about a days worth.
    I don't
believe Motion was intended for editing long
sequences and this could be part of your problem.
Good to know, but everything I've read and heard has led me to belive this was appropriate for longer projects. Guess I was wrong.
I break my Motion projects into small pieces and
reassemble them in FCP. Smaller sequences are easier
for Motion to manage since it uses RAM to cache your
footage. Perhaps some of your freezing problems are
    related to loading long sequences.
Not long sequences. One base reference layer and many small (3-5 sec) text animations. The thing is that Motion will behave itself for a fair amount of time, but then I will give me weird problems for a half and hour. Obviously, I need a better machine (don't we all), but I've used Motion on newer dual processor G5's with a lot of RAM and decent GPU, and it still crashes sporatically. Can't wait for Motion 3.
    Thanks for caring:)

  • HT4591 I have a project that I made in Motion 5.0.1.  I have updated to Motion 5.0.4 since, but the project will no longer open.  Is there a way to revert to Motion Version 5.0.1 at least temporarily so that I can access the project and add a few polishes

It seems that the 5.0.1 project file has become corrupt.  It was generated on an older MacBook Pro Model (2008) and occasionally acted unpredictably.  We have since upgraded hardware and are working on a much more robust machine, but we need to access this project file to make some final tweaks for the client.
Is there a way I could revert to Motion 5.0.1 and access this file for the final tweaks?  After these, that project will be laid to rest and I will no longer need an older version of the program.
Thank you so much for your help guys!  We love Motion.  This is the only issue we've ever run into with the program.
    Best,
    Konstantin

I had a problem with a 5.0.3 project that would cause 5.0.4 to crash. Apple asked for a copy of the project and later told me it was because there were some empty text layers. Apple is aware of the issue and is working on a fix.
In my case I still had 5.0.3 on another Mac and could clean up the project. If empty text layers might be the problem, do you know someone with an earlier version who could open it and remove the empty layers? I'd be willing to give it a try if you'd want to send me the project.

  • External monitoring oddities in Motion 3, anyone?

    Hi all,
I do a lot of NTSC DV projects, and I'm seeing some weird things happen with Motion 3 external monitoring.
    - First, the image looks squeezed ("skinny"), with black bars on the sides.
    - Second, Motion now applies the "Correct to Aspect Ratio" option to the external monitor (why??), which makes it even more squeezed!!
    - Third, moving the canvas with the hand tool moves the image around on the monitor. What does external monitoring have to do with where the canvas is in the canvas pane?
I never had any of these problems in Motion 2. Is there some way to make it act like it used to?
I'm using Firewire NTSC output to DV deck, connected to the monitor.

I don't use FW for external monitoring, but - no, I haven't experienced any oddities since the upgrade...

  • Is there touchscreen integration with Motion 5 Templates?

  • How can I create transparent animated  text with Motion and Final Cut Pro?

    Hi all,
I am trying to replicate an effect that a previous video editor did in a project, but I can't contact them.
They made animated text in Live Type, and saved it as a QT movie. When this text is placed over existing video in the FCP project, the text is "transparent", basically it acts like text created in FCP (You can see the background image behind the text, like through the middle of the letter "o").
I have made some animated text in Motion, but when I save it as a QT movie, and bring it into FCP, the whole 1280x720 screen is covered by this movie, and I have to crop it so it does not cover the background image. It is all black except for the text. And of course the text is not on a transparent layer. Any ideas how I can create this effect with animated text? I've tried messing with transparency and overlay settings, nothing seems to work.
Running latest version of Final Cut Studio...
    Thanks
    Dave

Just bring the Motion (.motn) project into FCP and lay it over your clip.
The QT you're exporting has to carry the alpha channel (animation codec, million+ colors), but don't waste your time/disk space with that. Just bring the motion project into FCP.

  • Sudden Motion Sensor being too sensitive?

So, I bought my early 2011 mbp in august of 2011. Everything was fine, until my hard drive suddenly crashed/failed/died last may (2013). After having my hard drive replaced, I started to encounter random shut downs even when I was on the computer (not moving or anything. just typing on a table). I went back and they replaced my motherboard and checked the hard drive again (they also replaced the screen, as it was acting up too). About 4-5 months after having my motherboard replaced, my computer would randomly shut itself off in sleep mode. It didn't matter where it was, it would just shut itself off. No motion or anything. In order to fix this problem, I'd have to dig the charger out and boot up while connected to the charger. I took my computer back to apple and told them about this. No one in the store knew anything, so they took it and looked at it overnight and found nothing wrong. I went home, and of course the minute I sit down to use it, it acts up. This has been going on for about 6 months now. It gets to be aggravating to carry my charger with me everywhere I go. All of the research I've done on this issue doesn't mention anything about booting up from the charger. (btw, I have a full battery too).
Can someone PLEASE help me? This is getting really irritating, and apple won't believe there's something wrong. I've also disabled the sms in terminal and rebooted, so those changes should have taken effect. It still shuts down even when sms is disabled.
*The only time it doesn't shut off is when it is on the charger*
(Also: When I move my mbp around, it sounds like there's a screw loose inside. It isn't the regular disc drive sound that you hear when booting up, it's almost like a clicking of a screw loose inside)

Does it click when the light on the front is flashing on and off? It takes a while for it to fully go to sleep and chances are you are moving it before it is done going to sleep mode. The light will be on solid while it is working on it, and flashing on and off when it is all the way asleep

  • MacBook in slow motion...

Hi, my MacBook is acting funny. When typing the words appear to be in slow motion. They lag way behind. I have restarted it but it still seems very slow. When I am done typing a sentence its usually about 5-6 words behind with each letter slowing appearing. What can it be? Thanks

I had this same problem. I thought at first it was the wireless disconnecting and reconnectings. Now I have a MacBook Air with the ectronic drives and what I found it would create a swap file with a delay of 5 seconds. I would type and the sytem would just stop.
I went in the terminal and typed this command
    sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist
And its been fast from that point.
