Motion 3: Mask Feather being ignored by Final Cut

I have a simple text layer, and a clone of that layer. I have placed a rectangle mask with a 100% feather on the cloned text layer. All looks great in Motion 3.
But when brought into Final Cut Pro 6, the Mask works, but the feather is ignored and simply cuts the text in half.
I have tried different codecs, (ProRes, DV, DVCPRO HD 1080i50) with the same result.
I am using a brand new 8 core mac, with Final Cut Studio 2 installed

One of the things that many are seeing is they need to do a reformatting of their machine, and fresh install of the OS and FCPS2. There have been problems as well with older FCP projects and Motion. Or even opening old Motion2 projects with Motion3. Keep looking for updates as well.

As far as I know, motion templates can only be used with DVD Studio Pro. FCP X only lets you add a background image to the DVD menu.

That's a compound clip. Not sure what you've done, but that's not a clip icon. Where did this media come from? How did it get into your computer? Is it really HDV? Was it captured using FCP?

Let the Motion 5 designer deliver the map that he made. For example he made a title effect with the title "We Are Awesome Company Title" than you get that map after the head "Effects" map. So he must send that map with all the stuff in it to an editor and the editor place that map in Motion Templates -> Effects.
Restart Final Cut Pro X and there you go.

Color ( or motion) on second computer - different mac than Final Cut

Hi,
is there a way to install e.g. color or motion on a second computer and have Final Cut Pro send the clip/clips there for grading and back?
Or does the 'send to color' only work for 1 mac?

"Send to Color" automates an xml path inherited from Final Touch. In theory, you should be able to Send to Color on your local machine to create the Color project, then transfer it to another machine as long as your media drives are mounted over the network. "Send to FCP" should still work when transferred back to your edit machine. Of course you'll need a licence for each, unless the drives are physically detachable. Not sure of the legalities of running FCP on one machine and Color on another with a single licence - in theory, you're not doubling up but I bet it won't let you.
FT/Color uses Unix symlinks, not aliases, and you can cheat it to provide file paths to drives that have vanished if you need to revisit projects where media has moved.

Motion "Field Order" setting not being honored by Final Cut Pro

I was having a doozy of a time bringing Motion files into a Final Cut ProRes 4444 Timeline (the entire project is basically motion). While my field order in both Motion and my Final Cut sequence was set to none, Motion text and graphics became blurry once I dragged them into Final Cut. I finally realized that (after stumbling upon this post http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1967373) that Final Cut was resetting the field order of the Motion project to Upper. It was said in this post that this was a bug. As this post was from April 2009 and it seems to still be happening, I'm assuming the bug hasn't been fixed, but does anyone know of a workaround avoid having to go into each Motion file in the timeline and switching the field order manually? Thanks!

AFAIK, you have to switch them manually. You can select multiple clips, do ⌘9, then in the multiple selection window, right click on the Field Dominance and one at a time, set it to None (or whatever you need). It's pretty quick.

My Drobo isn't being seen by Final Cut X

Anyone else have this issue. I've got it hooked up via Firewire, but no luck. Final Cut X sees my other firewire drives, no problem.
This is something of an issue since the Drobo is where I'm archiving everything. Not being able to see the drive from within Final Cut is going to definitely put a damper on things.
If anyone has some ideas let me know.

I have two Drobos (the 4 and the 5 bay version) and although they are great devices in what they are doing and how they are doing it there is one major drawback: They are slow as ****. On top of that, if you reach about 85% capacity then they come close to a standstill. I might be exaggerating, but seriously, they are slow. I'm just using them for backup.
If the Drobo rep tells you that the S model is "faster" than the "FS" version, then relativiely speaking he is right - in the same way that a worm crawls faster than a snail.

Motion crashes when trying to rountrip from Final Cut

Hey All,
Using FCP 7 and Motion 4.
When I select my clips in the Final Cut timeline and then send to Motion, I get a "Motion quit unexpectedly message". Any ideas?

We do need the actual DMP file as they contain the only record of the sequence of events leading up to the crash, what drivers were loaded, and what was responsible.
We prefer at least 2 DMP files to spot trends and confirm the cause.

Changes in Soundtrack not being sent to Final Cut Pro

I am editing in FCP and trying to use Soundtrack to edit the audio of my mov files. I am sending the audio to Soundtrack as a project. i edit the audio then save the file in Soundtrack but none of the changes I make are showing up in Final Cut Pro. I have Final Cut Studio 6. What is going on????

Audio isn't being captured through final cut

Thin black line around mask when placed in Final Cut Pro

After upgrading all to the latest version of the Pro suite, I'm getting a thin--pixel-wide-black line around my Motion masks when placed back in Final cut pro. Is anyone else seeing this?

Try this:
Open you media bin (F5) click on the "Media" tab at the top and find the "offending file". Click on the file and go to your Inspector-->Media. Under the "Alpha Type" drop-down menu, select "Premultiplied - Black" (or white or color) and see if that fixes it. I was having a similar issue with a white line appearing and this fixed it.

Screen capture blurry in final cut, but not Motion

I screen captured something from the internet using snapz pro (I tried DV-ntsc, h.264, and now using 'none'). It looks great when its motion, but after render, looks bad in final cut. I tried bringing the file into motion and then exporting a loss-less from there and then bringing into final cut, but its the same problem of being blurry.
the video was captured 4x3, though its larger than 720x480. Thats one of the reasons I threw it into Motion, because it would standardize the size in the case that final cut didnt like it. I need to get rid of the blur. help.

Also, if your file is LARGER in Motion, as you said, and then you drop it into a DV sequence, not only will it shrink, but it will inherit the DV 5:1 compression.
What size are you using in Motion? What settings? If you want it to look that good in FCP, you need to use the same settings in FCP. If you are adding it to a DV sequence, then you will have to live with the DV compression. OR, try it in a DV50 sequence. Better compression, higher bit rate.

"Motion 4" icon greyed out after upgrading to Yosemite - Did Yosemite break "Motion 4" in Final Cut Studio?

Against my better judgement (now that Apple has turned into Microsoft 10 years ago, breaking apps with every OS update, followed by radio silence from Apple, pretending like they didn't do anything), I just upgraded from Mountain Lion to Yosemite and noticed that my Motion 4 icon is now greyed out. Thanks Apple.
I still do the majority of my work in Final Cut Pro 7, with many, many, Motion 4 projects embedded in the timeline (so that I can change them in Motion and have them seamlessly updated in my Final Cut Pro project), including an unfinished feature length documentary on gay and lesbian history from 2000 BC until 1900 AD. Should I just throw the entire film into the rubbish bin? I would presume that Motion 5.1.2 is incompatible with Final Cut 7? So what am I supposed to do now?
1 - Downgrade to Mountain Lion (or heck, why not Snow Leopard?)?
2 - Switch to Adobe Premiere?
3 - All of the above?

After some peacefull time my system crashed completely on Friday!
I installed all from Scratch to make sure its not some old stuff that I carried on during migration.
It's not a problem with the motion files as I deleted all of them and XML export is still crashing!
The situation is, that after installing it all I got the same quicktime translation error again and I am quite angry about how Apple handles clients who are working on projects with the recent FCP story.
Unfortunately due to the problems in exporting XML I am not even able to switch to Adobe Premier as this is the only way to import there.
After a lot of testing I am quite sure, that this issue has to do something with an Apple Update release between June 2011 and now.
Conclusion: Final Cut Studio II is not working correctly anymore as it did before June 2011!!! Apple, Please fix this issue asap.!!!!

Motion to Final Cut Pro

I have downloaded all the updates. When I bring a motion project into FCP and render it, it does not show up when I play it. When I stop the project I can see the project but only then. Any suggestions.

OK, I just tried this again and ran into some issues.
First, in Final Cut
setup an anamorphic DV sequence and some anamorphic DV clips.
Sequence Settings:
Frame size: 720 x 480 NTSC DV (3:2)
Pixel Aspect Ratio: NTSC - CCIR 601 / DV (720x480)
Anamorphic 16x9 is checked
Clip format:
Anamorphic is checked
Drag clip into sequence timeline.
control-click: send to-> Motion project
both Launch "Motion" and Embed "Motion" content are checked
Now we're in Motion. What does it look like?
Aspect ratio looks good, video fills whole frame, frame looks like it's 16:9... What are the project properties?
Under General:
Preset: Custom
Width: 720
Height: 480
Bit Depth: 8 bit
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Custom 1.19 (doesn't this look weird to anyone??)
Save the project, close Motion and go back to Final Cut:
Now the clip isn't anamorphic. What?
Control-click on the .motn file, Item Properties, Format, Anamorphic isn't checked...
If you check it, then overwrite-edit the original .motn on the timeline, it then looks fine.

2 questions: why, when you send anamorphic DV material to Motion, does it set the Pixel Aspect Ratio of the project to Custom (1.19) instead of NTSC D1/DV Anamorphic? And why, when you change the project properties to that, are there black bars on the sides? (small ones, but black bars; I'm assuming it's because of the difference between 1.19 and 1.20 in the box next to the Aspect Ratio setting).
Why, when it's displayed as anamorphic in Motion, is the .motn file back in Final Cut not flagged as anamorphic?
