Motion 3 running slow
I am working on my MacPro with 8gigs of memory I am working on a simple project using the paint tool and its still running slow like a minute after I make a mark it pops up. Is it my graphics card? I have an early pro with a geforce 7300 GT. any help is great
Not necessarily.
You must need to figure out what you can do to make your existing setup work. Like pre-render your Animation clips to a less intensive codec or create proxies for the larger video clips you can use for reference.
How do you think we used to work with 100+layers and dozens of filters in After Effects ten years ago? We used workflows that operated within the limitations of our ancient gear.

Motion runs slow, why?
How do I let Motion know that I have 4.5GB of DDR SDRAM, so it can play something faster than 9fps? I'd like it to always play at 30fps. My graphics card is a ATI Radeon 9650 with 256 MB of VRAM. (not sure how to assign this to motion either.) Please help.
Power Mac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.9) 2.7 GHz and 4.5 GBWelcome to the discussions.
I'd like it to always play at 30fps.
everyone would like to play all Motion's projects at 30 FPS! But it is not like this.
It depends what filters and effects did you use in the project. It is quite easy to compound the project with blurs, drop shadows and other needed filters and effects, and the playback will slow down to 1 or 2 fps!
It is not so difficult to create the project that can seriously slow down (to several fps) even the MacPro 3.0 with 8GB RAM and X1900XT card!
So, don't be surprised - your computer and the graphic card aren't the fastest elements nowadays. Even the short projects from "Fun with ... " series can make a lot of "troubles" for the fastest computers.
I'am curious how Motion 3 will work, but it looks that it should work much better. We will see...

Do you have any ideas why Motion 5 would run slow on a computer? I have an Imac with 8Gigs of ram, and plenty of hard drive space, but it still gives me the beach ball when I add a few lights and effects. I'm at the end of my rope.
You probably don't really need 1080 at 60 for your finished projects but since you're just starting out with Motion, you need to lower your expectations. A long way. 1080 is about 2 million pixels per frame, DV is only about 400,000. That's not just five times as many pixels for the Mac to track; everything in video is exponential.
Explore the training tutorials available by Mark Spencer. You will get an idea of how his super powerful machine reacts with the software.
Adding a light roughly doubles the processing time over flat scenes. Two lights increases processing again. Reflections require processing the lights and then calculating the reflections so add another quarter of the time required for flat scenes. Add camera movement, motion blur, and depth of field and you need exponentially more processing time for every frame. The preload of renders into RAM is one of the cooler features of Motion, as comapred to After Effects, but that takes tons of time, to.
Try working in ye olde DV resolution for a few days. Get to know the software's limitations and what gets imposed by your Macintosh. Step up to 720p/30 and see how things slow down. -
I finished a video on whale watching, I retimed some of the clips to run slower to reduce boat motion and added a few whale sound effects, when trying to send to media browser or compressor I keep getting Frame 3085 (error-1) please help
Trash your preferences. Trash your project render files. Switch off background rendering. Do not render. Export.

Hello,
first appearance here, guys It seems that age or other digital debris is taking over my MBP. I followed this thread, in which John Galt and LexSchellings were being very helpful in solving other people's problems with slowness so now I'm trying to do the same (this thread: My MacBook suddenly started running slow ).
I used OS 10.6 until very recently but now updated to 10.9.4. I first noticed the slowness in Diablo III game and now I kind notice it watching movies in VLC. Sound comes first that motion.
Anyways, I downloaded EtreCheck and am pasting the results here, hoping the community could give a hand in fixing this problem.
Thanks in advance,

Question: how do I uninstall the gmail checker? It used to be a button on safari but it was no longer working. Then safari itself died until I got the Mavericks, and I had to change to firefox, so I guess I can uninstall both
I am thinking about upgrading to 8Gb but it just annoys me because I never experienced slowness before.
Thank you again
PS: I think I managed to uninstall gmail checker.

I can't seem to get LiveType to run smoothly on my MBP (2.33 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo). Whenever I play back a title sequence, the playhead just struggles along slowly. If I loop the sequence, it picks up speed over several loops. I have trashed my preferences and tried some other things (such as using wireframe view) but that totally defeats the purpose of seeing your adjustments in their final form. Also, I need to know, how do you move the playhead quickly to the start of a sequence rather than having to drag it from right to left.

The LiveType project properties of the current video I am working on are Custom - 1920 x 1080 23.98 fps. The original video files have been converted from raw video footage taken with a Canon 550D to AIC for import into FCE for editing purposes. FCE item properties for the footage are consistent with the project properties in LiveType.
Background footage is stored on an external hard drive, connected to the MBP via Firewire port. It's not the background footage in LiveType that runs slow, its the motion of the titles and effects that run slow.
I usually run LiveType and FCE in tandem to quickly move rendered title sequences, but will try not to have both programs running at the same time. BTW, FCE runs perfectly on this machine.

Someone Please Explain This to me-Quad G5 running slower that Christmas
I just got my Quad Powermac G5 fully loaded w/ 8 Gigs; 2 500 Gig Hd's and this thing is running slower than my 15 inch powerbook with 2 gigs. I am running Motion 1 and I am simply taking a picture and applying an effect (nothing crazy just simple blurs and such) and it will not play in real time? it seems to be just as slow at rendering effects as my powerbook? it took 3 mins. to render 15 seconds? Could someone please explain this phenomenom? I am a little baffled and ****** off.
Quad Powermac G5 Mac OS X (10.4.3)Mac OS X is heavily cache and swap dependant, its like the OS was designed to run with flash RAM instead of hard drives or something.
The speed of Mac OS X will improve greatly upon the I/O speed of your boot drive.
Since you got the stock 250 GB, most likely without a large 16Mb cache, Mac OS X will crawl slower and slower as the boot drive fills up.
I've noticed with my brand new 20" iMac G5 that I'm getting beachballs, there is nothing hardly on the drive and it's not even hooked ot the internet and it's slow, a pig 250 GB 7,200 RPM drive.
My main machine in my signature is lighting quick, windows snap open, program launch fast as heck and boot time is under 30 seconds. Actually it's a combination of things, fast video card, plenty of RAM and fast drive I/O speed that make a Mac snappy with the feature and eye candy rich Mac OS X.
The Quad has four processors, so CPU intensive multi-threaded applications will perform long jobs in short order. As well as running many applications at once.
What will help make your Quad snappy is to replace your boot drive with a 74 GB 10,000 RPM Western Digital Raptor and keep it slim, keep your files on a second drive, leave your iTunes and User "home" folders alone on the Raptor just near empty.
I've written it up here in a text doc

Tween freezes and app running slow
i have an app that runs slow plus no motion is running fine.
most of the apps i created with flash are like this problem
any sloutions..........Sure, they will give you a 10% recycling discount if you turn in an old iPod and purchase a new one.
Have you tried the stand fixes for your iPod:
- A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Restore from backup
- Restore to factory settings/new iPod -
Will an SSD make MOTION run faster?
As it says, will it run faster?
I'm currently on a god awful 5400rpm HDD :/
Motion 5 is slightly slow when rendering my projects, it exports fast and all's good. However when i want to play around with my projects it's so juttery.
Espcially when i click PLAY, it won't PLAY, it'll stutter A LOT.
Thoughts?Heya Matt,
Motion does most of its heavy lifiting with the graphics card. An SSD will technically make Motion run faster, but upgrading the gfx card will produce the best performance increase. Have you tried optimising your playback performance in the Render settings? Draft quality, quarter resolution, etc.
Hope that helps!

MacBook Pro Lag, running slow and to much time to start.
Hi
Need some help, my MacBook Pro is running slow it takes like 10 - 13 minutes to start, most of the times when I'm going to type something, it doesn't matter which app do I use (Facebook, messages, search on google, it get stuck once in a while and the beach ball appears for a few seconds and then works again, or when I navigate between apps and tried to click on something it takes a while and beach ball comes up I just reinstalled OS X Yosemite again and ran CleanMyMAc and got almost 2 gb deleted, but still the same problem, I use this computer for work on java apps. I ran the EtreCheck and this is the result. Any help on how to kill spotlight? or any suggestions??

Why does my iPhoto open and run slow since upgrading to OSX 10.8.5
Why does my iPhoto open and run slow since upgrading to OSX 10.8.5? I have an Imac - Intel 2.5 GHz quad core I5 - with 20 GB of memory. Before the upgrade it was much faster.

Adobe Creative Cloud - has anybody had any luck running Adobe CC on a new mac mini? Does it run slow for Photoshop?
Adobe CC applications are very large and the base Mac mini isn't a good choice because it has only 4GB of RAM and has a slow standard hard drive. To get the most out of ACC you should upgrade the mini to at least 8GB. I'd also choose an SSD or Fusion drive for better performance.

My mac takes a long time to log on, running slow
my imac is running slow & takes a long time logging on, anyone knows why this happens?
If you have more than ten or so files or folders on your Desktop, move them, temporarily at least, somewhere else in your home folder.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select the CPU tab.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Step 2
Launch the Console application in the same way as above, and select “kernel.log” from the file list. Post the dozen or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Do not post many repetitions of the same message. -
Hi,
A few people have asked this question, my macbook is running very slow and the mouse spinning circle comes up quite a lot. I am unsure of why it is doing this.
I have attached a copy of the EtreCheck I have done on my system.
Can you please have a look and see if you can see if there is anything wrong, as I am unsure of what I am looking at.
Thanks for your help

Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.
