Motion 4 is sluggish.  No preferences to trash

Hello,
Probably somewhat of a beginner's question here but I need a little guidance.   Motion's been very sluggish of late.  Even straightforward operations with a few layers and no serious animation move along at a snail's pace, significantly slower than what I'm used to.  I've never trashed the preferences so I thought it might be worth a try.  But there was no com.apple.motionapp.plist file to be found.  Is that unusual?  Could it hiding out somewhere?
Jagr

I don't have that file only motionapp.plist and motionapp.LSSharedFileList.plist. There should be no problem deleting it also, but I would not empty the trash until you confirm Motion rebuilds it after relaunch. You can download preference manager from Digital Rebellion, it's free, and use it to delete your motion prefs.

  • System Preferences into trash

System Preferences on my desk top is it safe to put into trash.

    Hi David
The Apple menu is not the place to look for the Applications Folder. You can use Spotlight to find it as JP recommends but here's another way of locating it that should be quicker. Click on the Finder icon at the left end of the dock and a window will open showing the folders in your hard drive. The Application Folder will be one of them. Open that and see if your System Prefs are in there.
The fact that you see System Prefs in the Apple menu tells me that it must be in the Applications folder so that's the good news But look in that folder just to be sure.
My guess at this point is that the icon you see on your desktop is an alias or a copy of System Prefs. But before trashing it we'd better be positive because you don't want to lose your System Prefs.

  • System preferences in trash

Every time I try to access system preferances on my mac it comes up with a notifacation that it is unable to open as it is in "Trash" when i try to find it in trash to remove it, it is not there. I have tryed system updates but nothinng has so far worked. Any help!??

It's apparent you have a major issue. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on resolving Trash problems. If you don't find a solution there, then reinstall Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • System sluggish / can't empty trash / error keeps logging every few minutes

I am having a peculiar problem. I'm on 10.4.10 with an iMac 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 3 GB 667 Mhz DDR2 SDRAM.
This afternoon my computer starting acting very slugging, and giving me the spinning colored ball for minutes at a time. It seems to be trying to do something repeatedly. My disk permissions are clean, I've rebooted a few times. Then I noticed something appeared in the trash -- I didn't put it there. It's a single folder called Yahoo.AdiumEmoticon(Old). I use Adium with a Yahoo & AIM account to communicate with my coworkers every daily (I work from home). I shut down Adium and tried emptying the trash. It refuses repeatedly, even after reboots, saying that this folder is "in use." Sometimes it would say "An item called 'My Project Folder' is already in use. Do you want to replace it?" (Or something close to this.) This error, if I don't answer, stays on the screen for about 10 seconds, and then is replaced with "The operation cannot be completed because the item 'Yahoo.AdiumEmoticonOld' is in use."
    Okay then.
So I ran Console and checked system.log. It's showing that for the last couple of hours now, every minutes or so it logs this:
    Oct 15 22:33:05 Haviland kernel[0]: disk0s2: 0xe0030005 (UNDEFINED).
It's the same address every time.
Before all this started, I was in Parallels using Windows XP, where I do some of my business. In what might have been a moment of bad judgement, I decided to install Access 2007 there. It installed OK at first, but when I rebooted Parallels, I could no longer launch Access. It would crash. I then tried removing Access, and that would crash too, leaving it there. I couldn't re-install it either. So I quit Parallels, and ever since then I've been having this problem. Parallels is not loaded.
I'm going to keep poking at this but any help is appreciated. My Disk Warrior is too old to help, so I'm going to fiddle with Tiger Cache Cleaner and see what happens -- but this is over my head, so I'm afraid of making things worse.

So Tiger Cache Cleaner didn't do anything. Wouldn't force-delete the trash. Something is seriously wrong here. I downloaded TechTool Deluxe and burned it onto a DVD-R, then booted it off that. I ran a full diagnostic (minus surface scan) and it said that my volume structure needed to be repaired. So I attempted to repair, and it stopped after about a minute and said, "The Volume Structure Rebuild could not be completed." No explanation as to why. Gee, thanks.
    Now what?

  • Motion 3 Sluggish

Motion 3 has been working fine for me for a long time, but suddenly everything is just unbearably slow.  I can not even preview in the canvas anymore.  Frames will suddenly jump and the playback is herky jerky.  Or it will take sometimes 10 seconds to advance 1 frame at a time during playback.
Does anyone know what I could do about this?

    Have you tried rebooting?

  • Finder, Mac HD, System Preferences, and Trash wont open!

Some icons on my desktop have become blank, and I cannot open finder in the dock. I click it, but it wont open. I cant open the "Mac HD" icon in the desktop either. Same with trash. I can use spotlight to search for things, but it is becoming very tedious, for I have never used it before. This all started when one night, I turned off my Mac Mini Version 10.5.8. When I turned it on, this issue occured. I have shut off, and restarted numerous times, done a boot to single user mode, even created a new user by entering all those letters after pressing shift, and the S key, but still, nothing! Please help me I don't know what to do :'(

Before doing anything make sure you have at least two backups.
Boot from your Tiger install disk and select Disk Utility from the menu after you select your language. Repair your boot disk. If there are any errors repeat the repair process until no errors are reported. Repair permissions.
If that doesn't help try resetting the PRAM. Hold down the Option-Command-P-R keys right after you hear the startup chime. Keep holding down the keys until the startup chime sounds twice.
If things still aren't working properly you can try installing the 10.5.8 Combo update over your current installation.
Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update
As a last resort you could try doing an archive and install followed by an erase and install if the archive and install is unsuccessful.

Trash your preferences. Trash your project render files. Switch off background rendering. Do not render. Export.

  • Motion is not remembering any of my recent projects.

When I open apple motion, it does not remember any of my recent projects. Everytime I want to open a project, I have to go find it in the folder. Fortunately, all of my projects are in one folder, but it is a drag to have to go pull it up everytime.
    Thanks
    AJ

    I'm having the same problem.
I downloaded Preference Manager & trashed Motion 5 preferences.
I restarted Motion5, the preferences were obviously trashed as the dialog to "Create New Project" which I had previously set to not show, showed.
I opened the last project I worked on; close and re-opened.
And still nothing in the "Open Recent" menu.
Even worse, I didn't realize that the setting "At Startup" has a choice to either create new or "Open Last Project".
I'd actually forgotten I'd set that, because of course, it doesn't work either.
If Motion5 doesn't remember any of the most recent projects, it can't open the last one edited.
So basically it still doesn't work.
It's never worked and I've done more permission repairs and checks I can think of.
I even had my hard-drive replaced recently (more or less irrelevant to this problem) - but that didn't change anything.
I'm starting to appreciate the Windows registry just a little more. It must be complicated stuff writing a list of strings to a plist file.

  • Need help in motion 4

Hi I'm a student and I forgot how to write text in motion 4. I use to use motion 3 and I would just select the text tool and just start typing in the canvas. But now with motion 4 I try to do the same but the text doesn't appear on the canvas. It appears on the text folder in the project pane and in the inspector but not in the canvas. So if any one can help I would really appreciate . THANK YOU =)

    Hi Patrick,
I've tried preference manager, but the thing is i've got nothing to back up. I just want to have access to the preference menu when i go to "dvd studio pro", "preference". The preference window doesn't open at all, same in Motion. It works well on final cut and compressor but not these two.
I'm on Leopard, 10.5.8, with a macbook pro 2,6 ghz core 2 duo, 4 go Ram. I've got final cut studio 2 pack. with the serial number etc..
I've removed all with FCS remover, and reinstalled the final cut studio suite. even before to start the update, i've checked and i couldn't have access to preference menu, and still the same after the updates.
I've also been to user/library/preferences and trashed the com.apple.motion.plist and com.apple.dvdstudiopro.plist
    but nothing.
i've never had this problem before.
    Thanks for your help

  • Motion Crashes on Start-up! - Project due in 2 days!

I have been using motion for a couple days now and I need to design a DVD menu for a project that is due soon, but motion keeps on crashing on start up. The only thing I can think of is restarting, and that didn't help. Is there anything like FCP Rescue for Motion? Any way I can trash the prefs? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem. I use Motion 1 on my MacBook Pro.
After I start motion, it shows the browser and viewer very shortly.
I tried to solve the problem by deleting the motion preferencelist <com.apple.motion.plist>, but the same problem remains.

  • All footage BLACK in Motion 4!

Any footage either sent from FC4 or imported into Motion 4 displays BLACK. Footage is viewable in the internal viewer, Quicktime, in the file browser preview, and on an external monitor. Media preview shows BLACK as well as in the inspector. Footage exports out fine. Same issue when opening old Motion projects.
Dumped preferences, repaired permissions, zapped the pram. I'm at a loss. I'm open to any suggestions.
    Any thoughts?

    Problem solved!
Issue turned out to be a custom monitor profile generated with an eye one and the X-Rite software. Switching back to a default profile brings Motion back to full functionality. The same issue has been caused by calibration profiles generated by other venders software. Only Motion effected. Weird!
This had a positive side... my skill level in AE has gone up more than a few notches.

  • Motion Inspector Not showing

I have been using motion and suddenly today when I opened it up my whole layout changed for no reason, I tried loading my saved layout but my library and inspector are missing. I have tried going through all the options within Preferences and windows tabs but the only thing that works is create locked inspector, which cuts it off in the middle at the bottom of the screen. After selecting the inspector through the window function It does not become checked? ***?!? any help or suggestions out there?

In addition I have used since the upgrade and there is also no com.apple.motion.plist in my preferences folder using motion 3.02

  • Preferences, Project, can't change project duration or default layer duration

Having trouble changing the project duration or default layer duration in Preferences. I change them and restart Motion and nothing is changed.
    Probably overlooking something. Help

There are a couple of ways to lengthen (or shorten) a project once you've started the project.
    1) Select the Project "layer" at the top of the Layers list, then in the Inspector, select the Properties pane and look down for Duration. You can type in the value needed for the length of project. You have the option of using Timecode, Frames, or Seconds.
    2) Set the Canvas "clock" (/playhead position) to the Project length. To do that, click on the clock icon and the "time" should look like 12:15. Click and drag up (or down) on the time value to lengthen or shorten the project.
When you start Motion and are presented with a Project picker, in the upper right corner of the dialog, you can set the length required (Duration) for your project(s).  Once you start that project with that time length, Motion will remember and all subsequent projects will be created with that time length until you change it at that location again.  I actually haven't set the default project duration in preferences in quite a long time.  However, if Motion is not remembering the project length setting, you might need to Quit Motion, then hold down the Command and Option keys and restart Motion (that should delete preferences and reset Motion to its defaults).

  • System Preferences crashes when I open screensaver panel after iTunes SS.

Whenever I try to open the screen saver panel in System Preferences (I'm actually just trying to change my desktop background, but I have to go through there first), System Preferences crashes. It seems to have started happening after I changed the number of rows in the iTunes artwork screen saver. I tried updating Mac OS X, running Yasu, and got nothing.
Is there anything I can do to fix this? Or is there any way to revert my screensaver settings back to default without having to actually go to the screensaver? I just wanna change my freaking background, this is ridiculous.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to the forum.
    First try magic.
    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    1.Shut down the computer.
2.Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3.Turn on the computer.
4.Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5.Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6.Release the keys.
    Than repair Disc permissions.
    If above doesn't help,try this.
Quit System Preferences. Trash ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache, where "~" means your home folder. (A new file will be created when you launch System Preferences again.)
