Motion 4 render quality from FCP

I do not appear to get the same quality rendering .motn on the FCP timeline as I do exporting .mov out of Motion 4, and so far a I can tell I have set my FCP sequence to do "best" quality. I'm using the 4444 codec. I'm evaluating by exporting .mov from FCP. What have I missed?

Phillip, we've seen a couple of similar post recently. I haven't followed them closely (altho I may have posted on one or two) but you might try scrolling down the Motion forum a few pages to see what turns up. You may find something that helps.
I just finished a Final Cut project with about a dozen Motion files pulled into the FCP timeline and rendered in FCP and an equal number of Motion projects rendered out of Motion as movies and imported. They all looked the same to me when the project was finished. Never used anamorphic, though, so I dunno if that could be a factor—shouldn't be.

  • Help...  Best image quality from FCP to DVDSP... (FCP project at 1440 x 960

    Hi all,
Yes, I just finished an edit in FCP with frame dimensions of 1440 x 960 (Not HD). (Don't ask . I am on the hunt for input for the best way to get the highest quality when I take the 1440 x 960 video down to Standard definition DVDSP. For example, should I just drag-n-drop a reference movie into DVDSP and let DVDSP do the resizing?.... or maybe I should use Compressor to resize first? etc.. etc.. etc... (If I should use Compressor to do the resizing... a little help on what settings to use would be great)
This is a graphically heavy video with a lot of client logos, animations, etc.
    Thanks a bunch,
    Matt

What format are the assets? As PDTV said, don't even think about recompressing an MPEG2 file if you wish to retain quality.
There are tools such as DVD2One which you could look at, but if this is 8GB of MPEG2 then use a DL disc.

  • Quality loss from FCP to Motion

    Hi there!
I'm getting a quality loss in the form of compression-based square artifacting when I send a piece of lossless footage to Motion from FCP. If there's a loss everytime one sends files, why would anyone use it? Does anyone know how to keep the footage lossless while sending between apps?
    Thanks!

Patrick, thanks so much for your help. You're all really helpful on here!
Exporting in prores still displays artifacts and they show up when I bring it into FCP (regardless of whether I import the clip fresh or have it saved back from a "send").
    Here's what I tried:
importing clip directly into a new motion file (not sent from FCP) - movie displays with artifacting - upon rendering, rendered clip still has issue - imported into FCP - still shows artifacting
by importing the motion clip with artifacts into FCP and display in the timeline, FCP changes it's settings to match the clip as usual - I then tried importing the original source clip directly into FCP and when I move it to the timeline, it also shows identical artifacts. However, if I bring in the original clip first, so FCP changes it's settings to match it, the motion clip still shows compression.
Assuming the problem is with the transcode, is this just an issue with this video format working with motion? If so, I assume this means our video team needs to use a different codec. We're shooting a lot of green screen for HD video - any recommendations for a better codec?
Also, is this an issue that Apple can address with future versions of Motion?
    Thanks again!

  • Best way to work on timerange from FCP X project in motion?

Suppose there is a region within my FCP X that I want to add some touches (that may rely on the footage and sound i.e. tracking etc) in Motion.
As I cannot export a region from FCP X, just the whole time line, for long projects this seems quite inefficient. I don't want one massive motion project and bit may change in the edit and it is a nightmare to maintain.
What is the best way to do this now? Is there a workaround.

You can save a lot of time by trying to do what you can in FCPX. You want to track something: easy. Apply your title, graphic, or other overlay as a connected clip. Select that clip and move the playhead to the beginning (type up arrow if you're after that start, down arrow if you're ahead of the start). In Video > Transform, set a keyframe on the Position (X and Y are keyframed simultaneously -- you only need to set that first keyframe -- any subsequent adjustments will automatically add new keyframes). Command - right arrow to advance 10 frames and reposition the clip, right in the canvas with the onscreen control. Repeat until you get to the last frame (the last frame is the right edge of the clip – 1 frame!). Playback (or frame advance with right arrow) and for any frame that needs adjustment, just drag that OSC to the new position. It will take you a lot less time than trying to get a Motion tracker going in Motion for a "remote" clip in the storyline.
If you're bound and determined to use Motion tracking:
    Blade your clip.
go out to the projects pane and duplicate the project (right click on the project > duplicate project :: duplicate project only)
In the duplicate: delete all the clips before an after your target clip (magnetic timeline will move it to the beginning)
Export > Current Settings (should be some flavor of ProRes)
Do your work in Motion and Export out with same settings (go into the Render tab and set Render Quality to Best. No Fields, No Motion Blur, No Frame Blending (that way you'll get it back into FCPX the way you exported it.)
Import into an Event in FCPX. Select the clip from Motion in your Event Browser. Select the clip in your storyline and type Option R (to do a replace edit.) You can Move to Trash the duplicate project.

  • Render time between fcp and motion

I make my own project in motion 3, this project is something like a slideshow but I used a new camera, a light, and the images (png files) in a 3d way. the number of media in the scene is always low, one ore two without filters too. Anyway, when I export the animation directly from motion to a .mov file I obtain a render time very quick, but if I import my motion project in fcp I can't work with this; just the visualization time is prohibitive! than when I export through compressor or directly from fcp tha application crash!
so my question is what elements fcp doesn't like? light? camera? 3d elements?
this time I solved the problem exporting my clip from motion like file.mov but I only move the problem... I cant't archive my project, it's to big!
    thank you
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4)   8 GB RAM

In my experience, these problems are more likely to crop up when using oversized images. Especially those greater than 2k or 4k (depending on your card). Motion gets a larger "workspace" on its own than when invoked to render from within FCP or Compressor...

  • Exporting DV from FCP or Motion results in only black video

I'm working with DV footage of a wedding that wasn't shot by me so I don't have the particulars on what camera was used. The video information related back from Quicktime is that it's a DV 720x480 (640x480) at 29.97 fps. My problem is that whenever I send a clip to motion to do a stabilization processing (for example) the resulting video when rendered is just a file with no video (just a black screen instead of video). I also have this problem if I export from Motion using the dv codec. I'm using the DV-NTSC settings in both FCP and Motion. Am i overlooking something, or is this typical behavior? Any help would be appreciated.

    Am i overlooking something,
The most common user error is incorrect export/render settings from Motion. You want to stay in DV, not the default Animation codec. but without watching what you're doing, it's almost impossible to give you more advice. It should just work, and it does, so we are left with any of several user errors.
If you can see the footage in FCP and in Motion, the DV files are good so it's got to be your output from Motion.

  • I want to send a clip from FCP to Motion

i am selecting a clip in my sequence and using the 'send to motion' menu but when it comes up in Motion it's not the clip i selected. It is using the out point for the clip i selected as the in point and making a new out point at the duration of the clip i selected.
    anyone know why

    Thanks for your reply Patrick,
No the clip has no speed alterations, the only thing bout it that i can see altered is that it a subclip from the original file that i captured in the same project.
Guess it might be a weird one then ay, there will probably be someone out there that knows whats up with it though,
When you are sending a clip or sequence to Motion from FCP do you need to have motion set up as the structure of you FC project before hand eg, ( DV- PAL) or does Motion reconize the formats from your FCP project that you are cutting on?

  • Poor Quality When Imported From FCP

Hello I have been having issues when importing a QT files into After Effects. When exported from FCP and imported into After Effects the footage loses significant quality, maybe a little interlaced. Ive checked and double checked fields, Im exporting in animation. Ive done both QT movie and QT conversion with the same result. Also it happens with files exported from FCP from other computers. Ive checked export settings & coposition settings. Any Ideas?
    Thanks

Thanks. That is what makes the most sense to me. How do I elect how After Effects interprets the footage? I went to preferences but couldn't find anything that fixed the problem there.
See the help system for Interpret Footage.
It's a right-click dropdown form the project pane. Select a footage item, Interpret Footage.
Thank you Lower Fields first was selected

  • Output Quality from Motion 4

I have recently upgraded to FCS3 from FCS2 and now when I export a Quicktime movie from Motion the quality is very poor no matter what settings I use.
The resulting output appears to be outputting at 'Draft' quality despite it being set to 'Best' in the project and in the output settings.
My output settings also seem to default back to draft no matter how often I change them.
    Can anyone help please!!??

I have been playing around and it only seems to effect Motion 3 projects. The projects appear crisp in Motion 4 but the outputs are shocking. New projects created in Motion 4 are fine.

  • Trouble Exporting From FCP 5 to Motion

Hi, I'm new to this forum and have a question. I'm trying to export a sequence of clips from FCP to a motion project. The manual says File>Export>Export to Motion Project as a path but that option does not seem to exist. I've gone the "Send to Motion Project" route but there is no option to embed content that way. How do I send my work from FCP to Motion with embedding so the changes are refelcted in FCP? Thanks.

Thanks! I actually discovered it myself by accident just a minute ago. I was selecting the sequence in the browser before and that apparently doesn't work. Got it now though. Thanks for the reply!

  • Render quality drops when importing sequences from Premiere Pro CS4

    Hello,
I have both AE and Premiere Pro CS4, and, because my Media Encoder doesn't work (a common problem, apparently), I import my sequences into AE to render. However, I've noticed a marked drop in quality in the sequence when imported into AE as opposed to when it's in Premiere Pro. It's comparable to a "Full" dropping to a "Half" when changing preview render quality in AE. What am I doing wrong? Is there some simple way to match the quality of the AE Comp (that has the PP sequence in it) to what the original Premiere Pro project has? Should I not be putting the PP project into a new comp in AE before I render it out? Is there another way that can retain the quality of the original Premiere Pro project?
This is urgent, as I need this rendered by Monday. Any help would be appreciated! Obviously, this is the first major project I've done this "workaround" with. I wish AME worked, but it doesn't for me.
    Thanks!

By default, the Ram preiew resolution is adaptative and not full quality, as it's just to "preview". You can switch this behavior to full quality, and by default, when you render, it will always be "Full quality" before being compressed by your output module.
You can check the Ram preview doc and the rendering doc from the AE help.
    Hope that helps,
    Seb

  • How do I prevent losing quality from HDV FCP 5 project to SD DVD?

Sorry to ask, but I'm new to DVDSP and not sure if I'm going about it the right way. I'm planning on using compressor to export my 30 minute HDV video from FCP 5, but wasn't sure of the best possible setting so I lose the least quality when making a SD DVD. I understand that loss will obviously occur, but does anyone have a preferred method?
    Thanks in advance.
    dual 1.25 G4 MDD 1gb superdrive   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Export the movie as uncompressed (not HDV) from FCP prior to encoding, it provided me with alot better results then exporting HDV then encoding that in any of my encoders I tried.
Also if you scale the exported movie in QT To 1/2 size then exported that it seemed to help speed up enncoding time/quality. (Scaling under 1/2 in QT gave poor results)
And take a look here where there are some details discussions of using HDV

  • Help...! Importing a clip from FCP to Motion?

I'm using FCS 5.1 and I'm totally new to it. I simply want to take a video clip from FCP and work with it on Motion. The said video clip is on a timeline, with in and out points already set. I simply want to take this small segment and add a cool effect to it on Motion. Since I have no idea how this is suppose to be done, I tried dragging the clip from the FCP timeline to the Motion window. This does not work.

  • Quicktime export from FCP quality bad on Windows Quicktime

    Hey all,
I believe this question has been brought up in a previous post (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2932763&#2932763 "Quicktime export from FCP quality bad on PCs"), but it was never answered. So I captured video using final cut pro using the following capture preset:
Sequence Preset - DV NTSC 48 kHz
    DVR-TRV900 using NTSC
    29.97 fps
DV - NTSC at Best Quality
    24 bits per pixel
    720 by 480
When I view the video under quicktime for mac, it looks good. However, when I view the content under quicktime for windows, the quality is noticeably degraded. For instance, when I looked at the video clip in mac, there was a text overlay that displayed the time and date. When I look at it in Windows quicktime, the quality has degraded to an extent that the numbers are no longer readable. Besides the overall quality difference in playback between mac and pc quicktime, there are no other noticeable artifacts. Also, I tried viewing the video in VLC (video lan client) on windows, and it looks perfectly fine.
    Ray

seems like this is a PC Quicktime issue rather than an FCP issue, you may have more success in resolving the problem if you post your question on the Quicktime for Windows forum
that said, you might want to check the Quicktime Player preferences on your PC (Edit > Preferences > Player Preferences)
make sure you have checked the "Use high quality video setting when available" checkbox
    good luck

  • Speed change messing up clip when sending to Motion from FCP

Im trying to send a clip to Motion from Final Cut Pro. In final Cut Pro I had part of the clip at regular speed and the other part of the clip I had at 75% speed. When it gets sent to Motion, the clip the is supposed to be the 75% speed one is a different clip. How do I get the clip to get sent to Motion and also have the 75% speed effect on it when it gets sent to Motion? Or, can I slow it down in Motion? Thanks!

You can just send your clip to Motion then make the speed change in Motion, that is the common workflow.
FCS 3 now fixes this issue when sending a speed clip from FCP to Motion, so with FCP 7 / Motion 4, sending your 75% clip to Motion will retain that speed change in Motion.
