Motion 4 very slow

I have an i5 with 3.1 Ghz processor and 8 gb memory.  Motion 4 is very slow, I cleared the ram and still slow.  Under preferences I have the cache at 80% and I don't open any other programs while working in motion or final cut.  Should I add more memory or get a new processor?  I searched this forum and did tried all the recommendations I could find but still having trouble.    thanks

Sorry forgot to add I am on Lion 10.7.4 and my graphic card is AMD Radeon HD 6970 m 1024mb

  • Motion very Slow - help!

    I've got a 106 frame clip with 2 layers of particles on it. It plays back very slowly and any time I try to change a parameter, I get 10-20seconds of the rainbow ball. I've read a number of threads about sluggish Motion and no matter what graphics card they are using, whoever answers the question always says their card is too slow. I've got 4.5 GB of RAM and an Radeon x850 card. I find it very hard to believe that this kind of hardware would result in such incredibly slow performance. I hope I'm doing something wrong in Motion (just started). Any ideas? Thank you.

    Heya,
    There are a number of things that can slow down a project by impacting either or both of the CPU and GPU. Let's talk about particle-related ones:
    On the GPU side:
    Are your particle elements too big? i.e. are the particles persisting/moving way off-screen? if you don't need them to live that long, try adjusting their Life value. The longer they live, the further they move, the larger that object gets, and Motion has to render the whole thing.
    On the CPU side:
    Particles are a simulation and their locations have to be calculated on the CPU. The more particles there are, the more work that has to be done. Other factors like simulation behaviors can add a lot to those calculations.
    Also, the nature of simulations is that conditions are set up and the simulation runs from the beginning. So if you have a project with an emitter that starts at frame 1, when you make any changes at frame 300 Motion has to recalculate the simulation from frame 1. Only if those changes affect the particles, of course. But if you combine multiple emitters with many particles and behaviors, it can take a bit for Motion to re-figure it all.
    Hope this helps

  • Motion very slow saving files

    Hi
    I am new to Motion, and am probably doing something wrong but...
    I am trying to assemble still frames into a movie. I have maybe 2000 frames and I drop them onto a custom project which is a 720x576 25fps clip with the number of frames set to 2000.
    Before I export using compressor (which works fine and at a good speed), I save the Motion project. This takes AGES! Maybe half an hour. Activity monitor shows one core running at 100% all this time.
    Is this normal?

    It probably has to do with the fact that there are 2000 individual files in your project.
    You could open them as an image sequence in QT and then save as a QT movie and THEN import into Motion. That way you only have 1 file in your project.
    Then again, if all you're doing is assembling the frames into a QT movie, I'd just do the above procedure in QT Pro instead of Motion. Using Motion for that is like swatting a fly with dynamite.

  • Motion is getting very very slow?

    hello, all of a sudden motion is becoming very slow.. im not even doing anything complicated at all.
    its at a crawl.. even when i click the playhead, it will not play.. i have rebooted and have pleanty of ram ect....
    any suggestions?

    I had the same problem exactly, only mine slowed down with the keyframe editor open mainly. To fix it, i just unplugged my second display while using motion 3. Even if i wasnt using the second display for motion windows it still caused major slow down. I unplugged the second display and BOOM, no more slow down. Mind you I never used my second display for motion anyway but it didnt matter. It was so slow that i couldnt use it. Also, i had both displays plugged into my x1900. Maybe a separate card for each display would cure this? I would say the reason apple hasnt addressed this issue is because there is nothing they can do about it. Short of a complete redo I dont see ant quick fix they can apply. They know its a problem and Im sure they are working on it. Apple is always fast with updates and if this one is being looked over than its not because they havent noticed. Its just one of those things that will be fixed, but until then maybe apple should give out a little disclaimer saying not to use dual display on one card when using motion 3. Im not saying this will solve everyones problem but it sure solved mine. When im not in motion i plug my display back in. Its a little annoying but i can deal with it. At least I found why mine is slowing down. And the funny thing is, it would only do it in the keyframe editor. No second display now, and no problem now.

  • VERY slow backup to external Hard Drive

    I have an older external HD case (New Motion) with a Western Digital 120GB Hard Drive that I use for backup, firewire only.
    I use this drive on my old slot loading iMac G3 (10.3.8) and it runs very fast, copying 16GB from the iMac to the backupin about 15 minutes.
    When I connect the backup drive to my G5 iMac (10.4.2) it runs VERY slow at night, taking 6 hours to copy the same amout of information.
    I notice that during the day it takes less time, but still about 1.5 hours. (The night/day differences are consistent).
    Is this an issue with Tiger or a setting in Tiger or how Tiger talks to firewire, or an issues with the G5 iMac? (Both firewire ports work fine with my iPod updating music).

    Hi robfromkinglake west,
    Try and isolate the issue.  Check if it's only with this drive.
    Check the drive with Disk Utility

    I've never seen a drive take 20 minutes to mount.

  • AE CS4 on OSX 10.5 Very Slow, Makes System Unresponsive

    This is very frustrating, our company has been fighting this problem since we upgraded.  I work for a major broadcaster which uses AE for all our motion graphics work.  Since upgrading to CS4 we've experienced a team wide decrease in productivity.  AE CS4 renders slower than CS3 and in some cases will completely lock up the computer when rendering, making it impossible to do any sort of simple multitasking.  Even switching to the Finder and moving around windows is very slow.  Let alone try to use Safari or type into a TextEdit document.  We've tried everything, but details first.
    We're running on last-gen 8-core 3.2GHz Mac Pro's.  Each has 10GB of ram and 1TB of HD space (mostly empty).  NVidia GeForce 8800 GT video card.  Runing AE 9.0.2.42)
    We realize that 10GB is not enough ram to use all 8 processors at full speed.  So AE is set to use multiprocessing with a max of 3 cores with 2GB minimum with 2 GB in reserve for other applications.  All the work we do is with HD footage.  All footage is delivered in Apple Prores.  Any comp of medium or greater complexity will completely slow down the system.  When comparing CS3 rendering time to CS4, CS4 seems about 30-40% slower. When rendering CS4 will also completely lock up the system, switching windows is a complete pain.  We've tried turing on and off OpenGL in AE, but no change.  We're tried every combination of settings we can think of.   Rendering without multiprocessing is even slower and still locks up the system. Also in Activity Monitor is will often show only limited CPU useage (see attached screen).  You can see I'm running multiple aeselflink instances, but each one is no where near 100 and the system is still unresponsive!
    Outside of rendering CS4 also is much more unresponsive when just working (not rendering).  Moving clips around in the composition window and navigating the timeline are sometimes a chore, with lots of 1-2 second delays before taking the action.  Or slow screen updates.
    Any ideas what is happening here?  If is something with the change from 32-bit to 64-bit.  Will more ram fix it or is there something else going on?  This is becoming a very frustrating situations where we have to completely restart the computer and make sure no other apps are running before even trying to render our anything.  CS3 did not seem to have these problems, even with multiprocessing turned on at it's default settings.  We like many of the new features in CS4 and are practically required to use it because we get a lot of projects from vendors, but it's proving very slow to work in.

    I don't know how complex your comps are, but our are usually pretty complex.  Simple comps with just text and 1-2 layers of video usually go pretty quick, but as soon as you ramp up complexity it slows way down.  I somehow don't think that our graphics card is the problem.  Most of the plugins we use do not see any benefit from OpenGL and we don't use that many 3D layers.  In general we haven't seen a big boost in AE performance with OpenGL on or off.  All our footage sits on a super fast Terrablock system with at least 300-400mb/s sequential read speeds.  Then again it could be that AE just runs poorly on Macs.
    Adolfo - we have done some quite extensive benchmarks with all our machines here.  Configuring both 10GB and 16GB versions (we have not tried higher memory yet).  We tested the same comp in both CS3 and CS$ with various multiprocessor settings.  Our test file's complexity was indicative of the kind of projects we do.  Around 30 layers, a mix of TGA sequences with alpha, QuickTimes with alpha (animation) and ProRes footage.  Many layers with ReelSmart Motion Blur.  A Knoll Light Factory lens flare.  A mix of layers with various blurs and color correction and some transfer modes.
    As you can see CS3 was much, much quicker at rendering the project.  In some cases almost twice as fast as CS4.  Also, strangely CS3 ran better limited to 4 processors in both the 10GB and 16GB configurations.

  • FCP is running very slow...

    Hi,
    FCP is running very slow and it is the only application open (besides dashboard). For example, when i move the playhead in the timeline i get the spinning wheel for about 5 seconds.
    I' m working in DV-PAL with .psd files (frame size: 720x576, 1440x1152 and 4320x1152).
    In the system settings i have:
    Memory Usage > Application 100% (351 MB)
    Still Cache 10% (20MB)
    Thumbnail Cache > Disk 8192K
    RAM 512K
    Sequence Settings > Video Processing > Motion Filtering Quality: Best (i' ve tried the others).
    I' ve tried the different options in the RT pop up menu.
    PowerBook G4-1.5 GHz-512 MB-Mac OS X 10.4.7
    Thanks...

    No problem.
    The reason everything goes so slow with only 512MB ram, is because when all the ram is used, Mac OS X starts using your hard drive as memory. It can be explained by a simplified little example:
    The speed of data traveling between CPU and RAM, and between CPU and hard drive.
    CPU <-> RAM = Ferrari
    CPU <-> HD = Citroen 2CV
    The solution to your problem is:
    1) Buy more ram
    2) Buy an external firewire hard drive to put your media on (a dedicated media drive)
    Good luck

  • Video .f4v very slow

    Hello:
    I'm having problems playing f4v video is very slow. The size is 100 MB and resolution 1280x720. When I play out of Flash it reproduces well.
    I need to play in Desktop application not over Internet.
    What I'm doing bad? Is there anywhere to play well or wich is the better option to do it?
    thank you very much.
    This is my code:
    import flash.net.NetConnection;
    import flash.net.NetStream;
    import flash.media.Video;
    import flash.events.AsyncErrorEvent;
    //fullscreen
    stage.displayState = StageDisplayState.FULL_SCREEN;
    var conexion:NetConnection= new NetConnection();
    conexion.connect(null);
    var display:NetStream = new NetStream(conexion);
    display.play("videos/ocioelecer.f4v");
    var video:Video = new Video(1280,720);
    video.attachNetStream(display);
    addChild(video);
    display.addEventListener(AsyncErrorEvent.ASYNC_ERROR, noshow);
    function noshow(event:AsyncErrorEvent):void{
      //no show error
    display.addEventListener(NetStatusEvent.NET_STATUS, statusHandler);
    function statusHandler(event:NetStatusEvent):void
        switch (event.info.code)
            case "NetStream.Play.Start":
                trace("Start [" + display.time.toFixed(3) + " seconds]");
                break;
            case "NetStream.Play.Stop":
            //End video
                            trace("Stop [" + display.time.toFixed(3) + " seconds]");
            (root.loaderInfo.loader.root as Object).removeSWF();
                break;

    100MB played locally is nothing. Most HDs have burst cache which can load up to 200MB instantly off disk. You shouldn't even need to (but might want to on a really 'value/green' rated drive) set the buffer to require 1 second of data before playing (bufferTime = 1).
    Are you using any kind of integrated graphics, like using a Z-esque Intel chipset with Intel 2000/3000/4000 graphics? Sometimes people over-estimate how well their built in hardware decoders perform.
    You always want to add Event listeners before you invoke a method that uses events. In your code you're adding listeners AFTER invoking a 'play(...)' method. Just for best practice, run the load(...) last.
    Lastly is the video available for inspection? 100MB for 10 seconds is 10MB/s, which is really only required in excessively high quality rendering with a huge gaumet with high motion. 9mbit is average full quality 720p (which is 1.25MB/s). You may have your bitrate set too high as moccamaximum mentioned if you are not in that video situation or striving for lossless video in ultra high motion.

  • Very slow applets on Safari 5 and 1.6.20 - works fine in Firefox

    Hello,
    Has anyone else noticed very slow applets in safari 5? I'm running 1.6.0_20 and trying run any of the applets at http://openprocessing.org results in VERY slow applet performance.
    If i load the same applets in Firefox things run smoothly.
    For example, load this one in both and see the difference:
    http://openprocessing.org/visuals/?visualID=9151
    The motion in Safari 5 is jerky and not fluid at all. But in firefox it runs nice and smooth. Even in Chrome it's jerky just like Safari.
    I've tried both the 32/64 bit version settings and still the same result in Safari.
    Thanks..

    HI,
    Open Java Preferences (Applications/Utilities) Select the Network tab
    Click: Delete files
    Relaunch Safari.
    And empty the Safari cache from the Safari menu.
    Could be the site itself. An HTML validator came up with errors.

  • Very Slow Build Time

    Hi All,
    Just wondering if anyone had any advice on what steps I could follow to try and solve a very slow build I have for one of my DVDs I'm making. It has completed 20% and it has been running for about 28 hours.
    Here are my project details:
    - 1 best quality compressor encoded m2v video track (45min length)
    - 1 ac3 audio track
    - 6 menus with motion .motn project files as the background
    - 1 track (hosts the video and audio)
    Any ideas on what I could try to solve this slow build I would be very grateful. I haven't had slow build problems with other DVDs before. It is slowly building the DVD, it hasn't crashed, and it is taking up processor power.

    Hi
    6 menus with motion .motn project files as the background
    These items must be taking all the encoding time. They must be rendered and MPEG2 encoded by DVDSP.
    Are they very complex and long animations?
    The mpeg2 and ac3 files are already encoded and DVDSP will just mux them in the final files; that don't take so long !!
    Hope that helps !
      Alberto

  • I upgraded my three year old ipad to IOS 8 and it's working very slow and irregular, can I go back to the old settings?o

    I recently upgraded my three year old ipad to IOS 8 and it's working very slow and sometimes freezes. Can I go back to the old system?

    No, downgrading the iOS version is not supported by Apple.
    You could see if any of the following improve things :
    - closing apps via the iPad's taskbar : iOS: Force an app to close.
    - if having problems with Safari, clearing its history and data : Settings > Safari
    - soft-reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
    - backing up (and copying any purchases over to your computer's iTunes library via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases) and restoring
    - adjusting settings e.g. turning 'reduce motion' on (Settings > General > Accessibility), turning off 'background app refresh (Settings > General), turn off multitasking gestures (Settings > General)
    - resetting back to factory defaults (after copying off purchases and any documents, photos etc that you want to keep) and then resyncing it back

  • Preview Project slides are very slow

    I have a new problem, that just appeared in Captivate.   If I record on a slide, doesn't matter which mode, Full Motion, Automatic Recording, etc, the slides play back in Preview Project extremely slowly.
    I have the Slide Duration at 5 seconds under Preferences.  I can change the slide duration in the timeline for each invididual slide, but it doesn't seem to make any difference.   The slides in Preview Project take about 30 seconds or more to cycle.  It works the same if I go in an Preview the Next 10 slides.  I have changed the number of slides down to Preview Next 2 slides and it still runs very slow.
    If anyone knows why this might be occuring, I would appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Mike

    If you're on Captivate 5, go into Preferences and try clearing out the Cache using the Clear Cache button provided there under Global > General Settings.
    If that doesn't work, try deleting your entire Preferences folder:
    - on Xp: C:\Documents and Settings\<USER NAME>\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Captivate 5

    If things are still running slow, try uninstalling and reinstalling the Flash Player via Control Panel.  Cp's preview functionality may depend on Flash player since it's previewing an SWF file.
    Does that improve things?

  • Very slow render on my beast of a machine

    Hello, I have an issue whereby my rendering is very slow. I am using premier elements 12 with a windows 8.1 computer that has an 8-core amd 8350 processor, 8 gbs of ram, and I have an AMD 7970 6gb video card crossfired with an AMD 280x video card. Crossfire probably doesnt even work, but even with just the 280x, it should be faster than this.
    I capture game footage, which is captured in xvid format, which I then import into PE12. I don't add any effects, other than some color tweaking, and some brightness/contrast tweaking. Then I export it in the same specifications it was captured in (1080p 30fps). A 7 minute video takes about 20 minutes to render/export using MP4 codec. If I try to use other codecs, it takes even longer. On my Mac Pro, using other programs like iMovie, this sake video would take like 2 minutes, and it only has a 4-core processor at a much slower clock speed, and only has a 6870 amd video card, which is like 1/4 the power. I feel that either the 8-cores aren't being used, or something else is wrong. No rendering that doesn't involve complicated effects should take longer to render than the footage length is. If the video is 10 minutes long, it should take 1 minute to render if it doesn't have chroma keying or anything heavy like that. How do I fix this?

    Thanks for the tip. Bandicam already works when I choose "motion jpeg", and it works very nicely as far as being able to record in very high quality without disrupting my gaming performance. The issue is that it still takes longet to render a video than the length of the video itself. So a 6 minute clip, for example, will take about 15-20 minutes. This is unacceptable when ther are no major effects going on, such as chromakeying. I should be able to render atleast at speed play (ie, if a video is 2 minutes, it should take no more than 2 minutes), based on performance I get on my lesser Mac with a lesser CPU, lesser video card etc. It may be the rendering settings. I am using the stock "youtube widescreen HD" preset in PE12, and i manually change teh 720p to 1080p (like my footage). What else can I try?
    The only thing I can think of is that PE12 doesnt use 8 cpu cores, or it doesnt use OpenCL. Does it? I cannot find any settings in PE12 for "enable multicore processing" or "enable openCL" etc.
