Motion 5 and compressor 4 with FCP ?

Hi,
Is it possible to use motion 5 and copressor 4 with FCP 7 ?
Thanks
Ivan

Sort of – by exporting and reimporting as clips. There is no round-tripping. For example, you can't send a clip as a Motion project to Motion4, save and have the clip update in FCP. You'd have to export a clip (or sequence) as a self-contained movie and bring it into Motion (or Compressor), make your changes, exporty and reimport as a clip, see how you liked the result, etc. Much easiier to stay within FCS.

  • Recent Software Update - Recommended for FCP X, Motion 5 and Compressor 4 Users

There is a recent Software Update ("ProApps Quicktime Codecs") that is recommended for the FCP X, Motion 5 and Compressor 4.  Should FCP 7/FCS 3 Users download this update as well, or avoid to prevent any conflicts?

I have one boot drive with 10.6.8 and FCS 3, and a 2nd boot drive with 10.9 and the FCP X Trial - best to avoid any problems.  Everything is smooth as glass at the moment.

  • Compressor 2 with FCP 5.1 workflow

I've been reading about using Compressor 2 with FCP 5.1 and have been a bit surprised by some of the following suggestions:
These are from Larry Jordan's website:
"Compressor 2 has problems with both motion estimation and 2-pass VBR. If you are using Compressor 2 make sure to select 1-pass VBR Better and set Motion Estimate to Better. Using Best settings creates very poor video.
There is a lot of talk on the Apple discussion site that 2 pass VBR gives artifacts, especially on transitions and is generally to be avoided.
To compress the file in Compressor, DON'T use "Export to Compressor" in FCP -- it doesn't work reliably. Instead, open Compressor, then drag the file into Compressor and adjust settings.
In their effort to tackle the problem of overshooting data-rates in C1, Apple seems to have ruined the quality of 2-pass VBR encoding to some degree. I've seen quite a few cases now where 2-pass VBR doesn't look as good as the simple 1-pass.
The new version of Compressor has technology in it that is not duplicated using QuickTime conversion.
I have never been comfortable with exporting using QuickTime Conversion. For one thing, it automatically down-samples your movie to 8-bit. For another, it will not be as good a quality as Sorenson Squeeze for the web, or Compressor for DVD. Third, Apple removed the MPEG-2 compression option with the release of QuickTime 7. Finally, the codecs it contains, while adequate for home use, are not up to professional standards either in terms of file size or image quality."
So, from what I gathered from Larry's website...
Use VBR 1 pass instead of VBR 2 pass for best quality
Use Motion Estimate Better instead of Best
Compressor offers better quality compression than Export>Quicktime Conversion
Don't use Export>For Compressor from FCP, instead export a FCP reference file from Export>Quicktime and use that in Compressor.
    What do you think?
    Thanks,
    Richard

Well, different "experts" with slightly different views.
This from hanumang's response to Jerry Hofmann over in the FCP discussion forum:
    FCP unrendered to Compressor 2?
hanumang, have you seen a quality difference using the compressor method?
    Jerry
In my experience, yes, there is most definitely a difference in quality.
For sake of completeness, when it comes to exporting for DVDSP, this is how I'd break it down:
File > Export > Using Compressor on unrendered timelines in FCP. The best way to do things with FCP & Compressor - especially true if (as mentioned) you're working in some compressed format like DV and doing lots of filters, motion effect and compositing within FCP. In my experience, color correction comes out much cleaner on DV-sourced footage.
On a 1-10 scale, with 10 being the best that Compressor outputs, this method is a 10
File > Export > Using Compressor on rendered timelines in FCP. While inferior to #1, this tends to work better on high-motion footage that needs to be encoded at a low bit rate (which I'd consider 5 Mbps or lower) than #3 because of the frame-by-frame processing. Also, transitions tend to come out better (again, at lower bit rates).
    I'd rate this method a 7 out of 10
File > Export > QuickTime Movie with DVD Studio Pro Markers, then import into Compressor 2. While this rates at the bottom, in many cases it's hard to distinguish the output from #2 & #3 unless you're encoding at a 5 Mbps or lower bit rate
    I'd rate this a 6 out of 10
In terms of encoding times, if #3 is my baseline, #2 takes about 2-3x as long. #1 takes about 4-5x as long as #3 for me (depending on the level of complexity).

  • Can I use motion 5 and Compressor with Final Cut Pro 7?

    Hi, Guys and Girls:
After reading a lot about the new Final Cut X I decided not to buy it. I´m not gonna say anything about it, pretty much everything has been said so there´s no point in being redundant about it.
    So my question is this:
Can I use the new version of Motion and Compressor with the old Final Cut Pro 7?
I heard the new version of Motion is nice, not so sure about the new Compressor but any improvement would be nice.
    Thanks in advance.

    Anyone?
Can I use the new version of Motion and Compressor with the old Final Cut Pro 7?

  • HELP NO Chapters from FCP and Compressor-Did the FCP markers correctly too.

    Hi Everyone,
Having allot of good Beans with FCP.
    One problem though:
    1. Export to DVDSP4 with CHAPTER markers on my timeline and when I try to import my m2v file from Compressor its greyed out for some reason so, I drag it into DVDSP4 from finder and highlight my play button on the 1st template
MENU: SET ASSET AND CREATE CHAPTER INDEX.
It usually works great while it continues on but, I dont see my chapters anywhere.
I know they are there but, someone on online here said that you dont see the chapters while in compressor (which I wish showed them in the preview windo to confirm they are there) but, have yet to see them who up in DVDSP4.
I still think this is a FCP inquiry but, trying to forums.

Has some info on Chapter Markers to help.
Are you exporting the markers when you export from FCP? Are you adding them and making sure that they are on the timeline (not the track) in FCP? (If you open the movie in QT you should see the markers on the lower left in a crop down selector if they exported properly.)

  • Motion 5 and Compressor 3?

I have Compressor 3.5.3 (from Final Cut Studio 2) and have recently purchased Motion 5. Prior to Motion 5 I was using Motion 4 and have installed 5 in the way described in these forums to maintain it alongside 4. This means I still have the 'old' versions of all the Final Cut Studio applications.
Within Motion 5, the 'send to Compressor' option just points me to the App Store. Is there a setting somewhere that will allow me to send it to 3.5.3 or is it totally incompatible? (I know I could output from Motion and then re-render in Compressor, but I don't really want the double render.).
    Thanks if anyone can help.
    David

    Hi
Export you Project with the Apple Prores 4444 codec, it'll be just fine.
So you'll obtain a best quality quicktime file compatible with compressor 3.5.3

  • G5  AND HD EDITING WITH FCP

I'm considering buying one of the G5s - the 2.3 model with 250gb HD. I already have FCP3 and would have to upgrade it. So far I've found iDVD to be useful together with Toast6 working on a G4 800 Dual with two 80gb HDs, one for main OS and the other for storage of FCP3 edited material, but....
How easy will it be, if possible anyway, to edit the new HD camera produced stuff with the G5 2.3 model? I'm mainly using a Canon XM2 at the moment and appreciate that a camera change will be necessary for my future requirements.
    All contributions gratefully received.
    Ron.

I suggest waiting too, right now dual cores are going into consumer level Mac's, so Quads Intels should become the norm for Mac Towers very shortly. Possibly with a eight core come early next year.
Software is still up in the air, third party PCI cards haven't even been made because the new Mac Pro Towers haven't even been announced.
I haven't seen much in the way of PCI-Express options either.
As you know rendering takes time, the more CPU's you have the better, and although you could go now, it's not the best move at this time.
Hopefully we will see faster Mac Pro's with more X-Grid use by Apple software, we could build our own clusters. This would be a tremendous hardware advantage over Windoze PC's now that the processors are the same in each platform.
FCP renders could be automatically split up and delegated to networked cluster Macs via XGrid. HD is very disk/CPU intensive, large files too.
As some have noticed, the PPC Quad sports two Ethernet connections.
BlueRay drives are coming, it's a whole new industry of HD video disks.
Yep, waiting until the dust settles and Rev 2 with eight cores might be the wise choice.

  • Motion 4 and MacBook Pro with integrated nVidia 9400M Grapichs?

Hi. I wonder if somebody has experience using Motion 4 (and/or other motion graphics software)with a MacBook Pro 13" or 15" with integrated nVidia 9400M Graphics.
So far I know those laptops are very good for video editing and Photoshop, but I don't still know about people that animate with them.
    Thanks for your answers!

    Heya Mark,
Thank you for responding. The information provided leaves a lot to consider. Personally I would consider frequent solo layers or lack of expectance for realtime performance for anything moderately complex in HD comparative to simple, minimal Motion projects as originally stated. But everyone has their own opinion I suppose...
Checked out the first few seconds of your linked reel - pretty cool. Like most reviewing reels I only looked at the first 15 seconds since I consider that the just of the reel. Then I went back and re-watched and I was especially interested in the West Marine flag. Nice fluttering of the flag - produced using only Motion? So you produced that solely on the MBP described in your post? What was the FPS on the project file? Have a project file with included media to download for testing?
    Best regards,
    OP,
With my profession I use many different systems/configurations on a daily basis. So yes; I have tested the performance on comparative configurations. Cinema 4D does not = Motion and "pretty good" is an opinionated statement. Much like "acceptable" or any other opinion you will receive from your inquiry that begs the opinions from others that may omit specific hardware and/or project configurations comparative to your consideration. Maybe you should try going to a Apple store and testing a project yourself on the machine you're considering... Just a thought.
Yeah your MBP will work - it's just that there's better machines out there can produce better results. If your consideration is the best that you can get for your budget then you'll get the best performance that you can get. I described it as "acceptable". If it's a black/white, yes/no question of whether your MBP consideration will work with Motion then the answer is yes. Otherwise you're asking for an opinion that may contain uncertainty. That's the deal. Best of luck on your hardware choice. I hope it works out for you! The lack of responses tells a tale for me. If this thread was flooded with responses form others saying "yeah the 13" MBP with integrated gfx card works GREAT with Motion" then I might consider the hardware. But two responses saying "acceptable" and "surprising amount" tells me that there's not much to hope for. If you're surprised by the results that your hardware performs at then you should not expect much from the get-go. I expect high performance from Mac Pro - I'm not surprised by its performance.

  • Rendering and lagging problems with FCP  X

    Hello,
    I am working on a  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50b) -  Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 - Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 256 MB and Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3.
My 30 minute project has been completed but every time I reopen it, there is a short sequence that always needs rendering. It takes a very long time for this sequence to render and FCP X regularly crashes and slows down. The software is very slow and sometimes non responsive.
This is my first try with FCP X. I've been working with FCP 6 and changed to FCP X recently. I’ve imported a lot of jpg and mp4 files. I import with proxy and optimized files and analyzed preferences. I’ve tried running my project with my hardrive as well as my external hardrive.
FCP X is generally lagging and unstable. It also slows down my computer.

mp4 files. I think that is not a good idea to use that format with FCPX. With my camera I have the options to use mov. (native for FCPX) or mp4. I use mov.

  • NI Motion Controllers and Drives compatibility with stepper motors

    Hello:
I'm trying to setup a motion control system and I'm facing some trouble. The final goal is to be able to control a couple of stepper motors. We already have a PXI System with a PXI-7354 motion controller, and a UMI-7774 connector block. What we don't have yet is the stepper drives and motors. It's likely that because of torque requirements we may need a gearbox. Here I disclose some of my doubts:
We are considering the P70360 or the P70530 drives, but I would like to know if it is possible to connect thrid party drives to the motion controllers? What requirements this drives should comply?
Similar as the first one, Is it possible to connect third party stepper motors to the NI stepper drives? What requirements this motors should comply?
Finally, Is it possible to adapt gearboxes to the NI stepper motors? If so, Which ones are recommended?
    Thanks in advance,
    Robst.
    Robst - CLD
    Using LabVIEW since version 7.0

       Hello Robst,
Either the P70360 or the P70530 will be good drives depending on your wattage requirement. A loose rule regarding wattage is not to exceed 80% of capacity. If you think you'll exceed that, buy bigger.
Regarding third party drives, though many are compatible we cannot guarantee compatiblitty of all drives nor are we able to support them. That being said you may want to take a look at these KBs which describe some issues to be mindful of when looking at third party drives.
How Do I get the 73xx Controller and UMI-7764 to Drive a Third Party Stepper Motor?
How to Connect NI 73xx Digital Outputs to Third Party Equipment
How to connect the 73xx inhibit and command signal outputs to third party drives.
Some points to glean from the above links are what kind of current gets sinked and sourced by the drives to insure compatibility. Regarding stepper motors, again we will only be able to guarantee compatiblity and provide support for stepper motors provided by NI. That said, the majority of stepper motors I've seen are compatible with our equipment assuming the drive it's connected to is compatible. Below are some articles that may help you make a decision on what type of stepper motor you choose.
Selecting the Proper Size Stepper Motor
NI Stepper Motion System Selection Guide
How Can I Determine My Stepper Motor Wiring Without the Stepper Motor Pinout?
As for gearboxes, you will just need to make sure that the gearbox you select fits properly with the motor you are using. Often the gearboxes are standardized to NEMA sizes that correspond with the stepper motors. Kollmorgen, who manufactures the motors that we sell, also makes gearboxes. Their gearboxes would be a good place to start.

  • Capturing Motion Video and a SNAP with one CWIMAQ Device

    Hello,
I am using Measurement Studio 6.0 controls and I am trying to accomplish a Continous Acquisition and a periodic interval SNAP Capture with only one CWIMAQ control.
I have A CWIMAQ control attached to a 1 CWIMAQViewer this starts to acquire when I say go. Then every X interval I want to have a Still image from that CWIMAQ appear in a 2nd CWIMAQViewer control. This is Proving difficult at the moment. So far I have been able to stop the CWIMAQViewer1 update to allow my CWIMAQ control free so that I can alter it to do just a single frame SNAP. Then I attach that to the CWIMAQViewer2. But as soon as I start up the CWIMAQ control again now both my Second and First CWIMAQViewers are attached to the CWIMAQ video source. Ofcourse I want to just keep the still image in the 2nd Viewer while the 1st viewer show full motion.
I also tried a second CWIMAQ control which is attached to same device as the 1st control. This doesn't work, as it automatically stops the first CWIMAQ when I do anything with the Second.
Hope this is clear. All I want to do is start collecting motion video, then everyonce and a while get a snap shot into a different viewer so that things can be done to it, all awhile the full video should still be collecting.
    Thanks

    Thanks for the reply.
    I did try that.
I may be doing it just wrong though.
Using the existing Ring example which defaults to create 5 buffers I put a small condition statement in the AcquiredImage function. So if it is not time to take a snapshot let the buffer attach to CQIMAQViewer1 just like the Sample code does already. If IT IS time to stop then attach CWIMAQ.Images(5) (Shot from Buffer 5) to the CWIMAQViewer2. It does this fine, except that even if it isn't time to Stop again the 5 Image in the buffer automatically gets attached to CWIMAQViewer2 because of it once executing the CWIMAQViewer2.Attach ... Method.
But I don't want it to automatically attach to that buffer until I tell it to. But I also don't want to want CWIMAQViewer2.Detach because that will make my Still image Viewer go blank.
Did I do what you described incorrectly?
Also. With the CWIMAQVision Control why will it not handle an image that is from a video source. Atleast it seems to not. If I were able to use the CWIMAQVision.WriteImage function using a CWIMAQViewer1.Image from a camera as my source then I would be able to to create a still frame and put that into a Viewer2. But I get nailed with an Incompatible Image Type when I try that. It works fine with a Loaded .jpg, like the CWIMAQVision.ReadImage command, then link that to a Viewer Control. Then I could CWIMAQVision.writeImage and a get a stored shot.
Some CWIMAQVision methods are OK with fast changes images and other not. IE. I can pass a CWIMAQViewer.Image as the source for a CWIMAQVision.Histogram2 function and get a histogram of the Light and Darks that updates with each CWIMAQ.AcquiredImage, but I can pass the same CWIMAQViewer.image as the source image for the CWIMAQVision.Threshold method to find display the 2 colour Light/Dark Intensity version of the Image. It tells me that the Image is incompatible. But I can do it with a still image .jpg which is loaded using the CWIMAQVision.ReadImage method.
What I want to do is capture Video. Then have the CWRangeSelect control show the Array data of the Contrasts, and have the Second Viewer show the Red on Black version of the Data from the Array. THen I can use that contrast ratio to calculate how much of the scene is what I am looking.
There will no doubt be more to this.
    Thanks

  • Motion tracking and exporting layers with the background video

Is it possible to apply the motion tracking data to a new object in a new layer and then output, or export, that layer as an overlay plane (or perhaps in the alpha channel) so that the new object can be interactive (perhaps in a flash swf format)?
I would like to create an interactive layer of objects (created through motion tracking) above a background video layer.
Is After Effects the right tool for this job?

You are severely oversimplifying the matter. Interaction means establishing rules and this in turn requires programming. Ergo, you absolutely cannot avoid Flash and ActionScript. You can certainly do the tracking in AE and then use CS4's "Export to Flash" feature to get the raw setup into Flash, but the work doesn't stop there. For older versions of AE you will need alternate ways to import the tracking data, e.g. by ways of text files, but really, this is much more a Flash topic than one for the AE community, so better ask your questions there.

  • Final cut and compressor don't work! Please help!!

Hi, I am having serious problems with my mac and it is not the first ime this has happened when I work to a deadline. Surely this is not some cruel twist of fate, rather mismanagement on my part? But how, why?
I am running FCP 5.1.4 and Compressor 2. FCP will not load at all at the moment and I have tried using Onyx to clean up the system, FCP Rescue to delete preferences. I have freed up additional space on my start up drive, which was admittedly low before I did so. I have accidentally erased some scratch files, but have managed to get so far on start up as to reset them. I really do not know what to do here and am desperate to get to work. I can not get beyond the serial registration window, and Activity Monitor comes up FCP not responding, every time after about 30 seconds.
As for Compressor, well it seems to quit whenever it feels like it, and the batch monitor function crashes immediately up launch.
I am really deperate here for input, and have experienced these sorts of problems in the past when running decompressing to HD quality in FCP, simultaneously running Compressor and or DVD Studio Pro.
My machine should be powerful enough though with 4 x dual 2.5 processors and gigs of ram, or so I thought...
Thoughts very welcome. Thanks in advance!

also try running the FCS apps installer (no additional content), sometimes this fixes the problem, it doesn't take too long and is similar to a refresh of the apps, especially if you are having problems starting apps, or serializing them and you have a valid serial! After you install, don't start the apps, run disk utility, repair permissions, reboot and then start up FCP and serialize.
