Motion 5 + Macbook Air

I have a late 2011 MBA which I recently installed Motion 5 on. I understand that the system is not ideal for running motion, however I am wondering what I can do to improve the performance. So far I have dropped the settings in the "rendering" options to their lowest - this still results in choppy playback, even of clips with no effects.
Are there any otpions to let Motion run a "pre-render" during editing so that I can watch effects smoothly? Any other suggestions short of upgrading?
Thanks,
-Michael

Max out RAM, that's about it.  Reduce the render options as you've done.  Not much else to do.

  • Motion 5 on Macbook Air/Macmini [2011]

I am planning to buy a Mac for working on Motion 5 and/or After Effects. Just wanted to know which one is the best option:
    1. Macbook Air
    2. MacMini/Server
Which of these can be upgraded to the max for using the software(s)?
    Thank You.

Neither will run Motion and AE very well, the worst choices you can make.
Best is a Mac Pro with 7200rpm SATA drives internally and a min of 8 (if not 12) GB RAM, and the best graphics card you can afford.
Second is an iMac maxed out on RAM, and the fastest CPU and best Graphics config you can afford.
Third would be a MacBook Pro, 17".
Graphics card is going to be the biggest factor here, second to CPU speed and how much RAM.  But hard drives need to be 7200rpm, and don't put media on the OS drive for better performance.  Internal is best, but FW800 is ok.

  • Macbook Air mid-2013 suddenly not booting - showed battery icon then died

    Hi all,
This morning, I used my Macbook Air (mid-2013) to send an email and check up on my usual stuff, nothing I've not done hundreds of times. I then closed the lid and went to work. Again, nothing I've never done before.
When I got home though, I opened the Macbook and it didn't wake up, which I thought was odd. So I pressed the power button. For a few seconds, it showed an icon in the middle of a black screen that was related to the battery - sorry I can't recall exactly what it looked like, its the first time I've seen it, but it showed an empty battery with a small red part of it left - obviously understood as meaning the battery was flat.
I was puzzled at this; it should have been asleep since I'd closed the lid, how could it have run out? I was only gone for about 8 hours as well, I usually get more battery life than that out of it when I'm actually using it, never mind when its sleeping.
But I thought whatever, and plugged it in for a few minutes to charge it up enough to turn on and maybe see why it had done this. The orange light came on the Magsafe end, but after a few minutes, still nothing.
Cue much panicking and looking around at things, and this is what I've discovered/tried:
    - The battery appears to be charging, the light eventually went green.
    - When I press the power button, the Mac does power on; I can hear the fan inside if I put my ear to it (note that this means its really quiet, its not blowing at full power or anything), and the Mac is getting hot on the left hand side where the power adapter plugs in. It turns on both when plugged in and when its not. So the battery has power and the machine is turning on, it just isn't booting or doing anything. I can turn it off if I hold the power button down for about 3 seconds, the fan stops. But everything else is completely unresponsive. Also, it gets quite hot pretty quick, hotter than it normally does when in use.
    - I've reset the SMC, several times. When I do this, the light on the Magsafe goes green for a second, then back to orange, as though I've just plugged it in. I guess this means it is responding to the SMC reset, but it does nothing in terms of getting the thing started. This is the first thing people suggest with this problem, but I've already done it and while it seems to be doing its thing, it doesn't fix the problem.
    - I've tried resetting the PRAM/NVRAM. This has no noticeable affect on anything.
    - I've tried holding a bunch of different keys when starting up (cmd+R etc.) but again, nothing.
    - I've tried something crazy suggested in another thread; leaving the Macbook partially opening and shaking it, which supposedly does something to the "sudden motion sensor". I wouldn't have tried this but a whole bunch of people said it worked for them, but it does nothing for me. The fact this step didn't work is why I made a new thread; because the issue with those people seemed to be that their Macs wouldn't wake up from sleep/hibernation and shaking it somehow did that, or they just magically woke up on their own.
And at this stage I seem to have run out of thing to try.
I've made an appointment at the Genius bar but the earliest they could do is Saturday, which is pretty crappy and I'm going travelling in less than 2 weeks, so I really need my Macbook to sort out the details since a lot of info about it is on there exclusively.
Does anyone know any reason why this might have happened?
Why would the battery drain so fast when it was supposed to be sleeping?
Why will it now not boot at all, even though it's powering up in some way? Could it not booting be related to the fact the battery seemed to run completely flat, and this has done something to the software or hardware?
Any suggestions beyond what I've tried already?
If I can't get it working before my Genius appointment, I'll post what happens here just in case any one else has this issue so people will have an idea of what might have happened to them.
    Thanks in advance!

You could try booting the MBP using the OPTION+COMMAND+R keys and see if it will connect to the Apple servers.  This would allow you to install the original OSX .  I have my doubts though.

The Sudden Motion Sensor is applicable for conventional Hard Drives, not the SSD that is in a MBA.  Doing that will serve no useful purpose.
You have exhausted all reasonable options and will just have to have the MBA evaluated at the genius bar.
    Ciao.

  • MacBook Pro Retina Display 13" or MacBook Air 13"??

I'm starting university in September and I'm considering purchasing a MacBook Pro 13" or a MacBook Air 13" to use during my study. I just can't decide which to go for.
Because I do a lot of photography work - (Adobe Photoshop) - I'm guessing the pro is a good option although the only thing I'm concerned about is the weight. I'll be taking my MacBook wherever I go - I.e. On field trips, lectures to take notes, friends' houses etc. so I want it to be portable and easy to carry wherever I go.
My friend has an Air and it looks and feels great. But I've been thinking is worth me getting the pro? Is the weight difference that much of an issue? Or wont I notice it? I've seen many comparison videos and both seem to be pretty close in terms of thinness. I just don't want to feel gutted if I go for the Air when the MacBook Pro might have a lot more to offer. I'll also be using office software for all my writing work for my course next year and the idea of having crisp sharp typography really appeals to me if I go for the pro. Having said this, I've heard that the standard resolution and the retina display can't really be differentiated from working distance but I've also heard that the colours are more vibrant on the pro. Another concern is the battery life. I'm really stuck.
    Thank you for your time.

The Pro is slightly better for Photography.   The 15" Pro is even better as the graphics chip gives you more chip based power.
The weight is not that much.  I used to carry around an 8 lbs Powerbook in 1998.  The key to weight is having the proper bag with adjustable straps.
And when you do transport it, do not leave it on.  Shut it down.  Even with the sudden motion sensor, the innertia may suddenly wake it from sleep or make the hard drive deteriorate faster.  If it wakes with the lid closed, that can cause it to overheat from the display on the computer's keyboard.

  • If I buy a new MacBook Air will the Apple Store help me transfer everything from my old MacBook Pro?

Will Apple help to copy over all the settings, apps, programs, files, etc. from an old MacBook Pro 15" on OS X 10.6.8 to a new MacBook Air 15"?  Will it work easily and painlessly?  Will they help me set it back to factory once everything is copied so that it can be sold or given to someone else?  Will they charge for this?
I want to get the new MacBook Air 13".
The current 15" 2.53 GHz MacBook Pro Mid 2009 has the following specs and OS:
    Mac OS X version 10.6.8
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,4
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 3 MB
    Memory: 4 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP53.00AC.B03
    SMC Version (system): 1.49f2
    Serial Number (system):
    Hardware UUID:
    Sudden Motion Sensor: Enabled
According to Apple's serial number identifier it's this: https://support.apple.com/kb/SP544
    Thanks.

    You sure about this? https://www.apple.com/why-mac/better-support/
"Purchase a One to One membership at the same time you get your new Mac from an Apple Retail Store, and you won’t have to spend hours transferring all your stuff. Just bring in your old PC, and we’ll do it for you. A Specialist will move all your files — email, contacts, music, photos, documents, calendar, desktop items — and make sure everything is exactly where it should be. One to One costs just $99, and it includes a year’s worth of one-hour, face-to-face training sessions. It’s like getting a head start before you start."
This is really disappointing.  Buy a $3,000 computer from them and then buy another one for $1,000+ and all they want to do is screw you over, nickle and dime you and price gouge you on setting it up.

  • Is the new macbook air fast enough to play 100 fps gopro video fluidly?

    Hello,
I'm interested in the new macbook air 13. I often use a gopro hero 3 black edition, filming with 100 fps in 960p for slow motion. Is the new macbook air able to play these video fluidly by just pressing the space button in the finder menu. I know that it does play the video fluidly when opening quiktime. If it doesn't work with the space button, would a Intel Core i 7 help. Thanks for your help

After doing some research I found that when I play my video files they are capped at 24FPS on any PC or Mac.  Which has further confused me.
So if someone could educate me on if it is possible to have my macbook(been using vlc player) draw more frames out out of a video file or of some other artificial method to get the most out of this TV.
It could very well be possible that I will absolutely have to watch my movies using the physical disc and the appropriate blu-ray player to draw 240FPS but again, if someone could educate me on this I would be grateful.  I want to know for sure if it can or can't be done before making that purchase.
    Thanks!

  • Clicks and Beeps from my macbook AIr...

*I just got my macbook air in december it is a 1st gen i got it on clearance at best buy for 1039.00 it was new in box..i have been using it and it is working fine. my only issue or what i cant tell why it does this is it makes these click noises is that normal ??? and it also makes this litttle beep noise randomly. i don't know if it is normal or something i should be worried about i have taken it to the apple store and asked them what it was they said it was normal but then again they didnt hear the noises ..please if some one has some info it would be great thanks

I think the problems you had may have been unrelated or just random symptoms of one big problem. When a modern Mac laptop shuts off on its own, as yours did, that's heat. Either the Mac is perceiving it's too hot, or it really is to it. An overheating Mac can cause all kinds of crazy problems.
Most people I've noticed w/ clicking and beeping Airs have isolated it to the HDD, and they are having no problems with their Airs, or problems that can be directly related to the HDD.
Frankly, I have no idea what's up. It may be nothing or at least relatively trivial. I just did some checking and discovered the sudden motion sensors in Macs often make a clicking noise when they activate or deactivate. Probably the hard drive locking down or releasing. And sometimes the sensors lock the drives when there's no need, out of extra sensitivity. Factor in, I'm guessing, when my Air automatically spins down the HDD in a period of disuse, it probably locks the heads, too, with the same mechanism the sudden motion sensor triggers. So I hear the click sometimes when the HDD spins down or spins up, when the lock releases it. If I set the HDD to never spin down no matter what, I never hear the click.
The beep, I don't know. Laptop drives can make some weird noises when they spin up or down. Some of those noises are indistinguishable from a beep. Whether or not these noises indicate a defective or failing hard drive, that's up in the, well, air.

  • Using a macbook air?

Can a macbook air and a external drive work well enough to do basic editing in Fcp?
    Thanks.

Yes.  I use a MacBook Air 11" with 2GB and 128GB with FCP X, Motion and Compressor.  It is not as fast as the iMac 21" 8GB I also use, but it works well for smaller projects for me.  So far, no problems at all.  I also run  Lion on both machines and all play well together.  Hope this helps.

  • Can we copy a CD tutorial onto an iPad? Does it work like the MacBook Air when downloading or copying using the iMac?

Can we copy a CD tutorial onto an iPad? Does it work like the MacBook Air when downloading or copying using the iMac?

So it can be .mp4 format.
If not you have to convert it.
Try import it into iTunes then sync it to your iPad.

  • MacBook Air won't turn on - battery issue?

    hi everyone,
I stupidly brought a 2013 MacBook Air second hand 2 weeks ago. I have had no problems, updated to Yosemite and changed user log in etc to my own and that's been fine. The battery count was about 642 so probably about 648 now.
I usually charge it when its in the last 10% of life and then remove the charger when green. On Thursday I left it on green for about 3 hours and removed it as soon as I had realised it was fully charged and used it prior to that. Today is Saturday (just so you know timescale) and I went to turn it on.
it fired up past the Apple logo and onto log in screen. I typed in my password and it died. So I tried again got to log in (and battery was at 74% when I had a quick look) and then it died again. Powered on again, and this time didn't make it to the log in before dying. And the final time died quicker again. Now it won't switch on at all.
i have tried another air charger from a friend and this hasn't helped. Also have tried shaking it to get the motion sensor activated. Nothing.
any advice and suggestions would be really appreciated. I know I'm stupid for buying second hand, and I will probably spend as much fixing it as buying a new one would have been added to the cost of the macbook.
    thankyou in advance

I saw this article - but how do I know if I need to reset the memory - as the article suggests - or if it is the mother board- as some other articles say---
I think I could change out the memory but where do I purchase one -- if that is the case??

  • MacBook Air ultra sensitive

I mostly use my new MacBook Air 4,2 (1.7 GHz Intel Core i5 running OS 10.7.2) in the office using a remote keyboard and monitor.  In the evening I use it at home, perched on my lap. In the office it works flawlessly.  At home, it has become increasingly temperamental.
When I am working in a document, while using it as a laptop, things go fine as long as I'm just typing away.  When I need to go back in the document and click, e.g. to make a correction, it comes up with a contextual menu e.g. Cut Copy Paste, etc.  These menus come up when I'm in Finder, Safari, in fact anywhere I click.
It is particularly frustrating in Excel where there typically is a lot of clicking in cells. Repeated clicking will make the menu go away and the cursor will appear again. The next few clicks are fine and then the problem returns. While typing this, I clicked on the header (Start New Discussion: Apple Support Communities), a menu appeared: Hide Toolbar, Customize Toolbar. When I click again, the same happens, next click, it is gone.
I thought it had something to do with positioning but I have not found a position where the machine works reliably. I am writing this with a heavy book under it, on my lap.  I have tried to squeeze and bend the case to find a physical reason, without avail.  I thought it might have been fitted with a Sudden Motion Sensor but, in the absence of a hard disk, there is no reason for one. Of course, the System Profile does not show it fitted.
Has anyone struck this problem before or can anyone suggest a way to narrow down the problem?

    1. System Preferences > Accessibility > Mouse & Trackpad
         Double-click speed
Try adjusting the speed a bit lower.
    2. Shutdown the computer.
Clean the Trackpad with a dry microfiber cloth.

  • Is the i7 13" Macbook Air capable of playing some basic games?

I'm looking into possibly grabbing a 13" Macbook Air with the i7 1.7Ghz processort and was wondering if it's capable of playing some basic games that are out in the Mac App Store such as Angry Birds, N.O.V.A. 2, or even Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas? Also I tend to use Vuze and sometimes Handbrake, would the high end 13" Macbbok Air be capable of doing all this for me?

Capable? Yes indeed it is. However, if the game or application is CPU or GPU intensive, then you can expect longer waits for completion of tasks. It's not so much noticeable on rudimentary games, but it really has an effect on detailed fluid motion in games that rely on such.
Handbrake tasks will just take longer to complete, it won't stop it.
I use my MBA's for medium intensity gaming without any complaints. But really, you should refer to the system requirements on each, on a case by case basis.

Upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99.
If you sign into the App Store and try to purchase Mountain Lion but the App Store says your computer is not compatible then you may still be able to upgrade to Lion per the following information.
    A. Upgrading to Mountain Lion or Mavericks
To upgrade to Mountain Lion or Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion or Mavericks (Free) from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion — System Requirements
         OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) —
                 Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) — Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
    Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table — RoaringApps.
    B. Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • MacBook Air and Photoshop CS6

I am looking at buying a MacBook Air (Mid 2012, core i7, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB SSD), and I am curious how it performs using Adobe Photoshop CS6 3D. Also, can it run other profesional applications such as Adobe After Effects, FCP X, Motion 3.5, and Adobe Premiere Pro CS6. Any other tips and tricks would be appericated. Thanks

I've got a mid 2012 MBA with an i7 and 8GB RAM, 128SSD. I have photoshop 6 that I run from an external hard drive linked up via usb 3 and it runs just fine. A bit harder than normal but well within what the CPU is capable of. I've had it open with Safari, iTunes, and a few other things and it still runs smooth. The i7 along with 8GB RAM is quite powerful especially for how little the notebooks are.
