Motion 5 Tutorials

Hi,
I'm pretty familiar with FCPX, but completely new to Motion. I am now looking for some basic introductory video-tutorials for Motion 5 to get started. Any ideas, anyone?

The 4 best resources:
- macProVideo.com has some of the best online training.
- macProVideo.com/hub has a lot of free tips and tricks for Motion (and FCP X) articles.
- Ripple Training has some great advanced training after that.
- As for a book, that is also hands-on, the book "Apple Pro Training Series: Motion 5" is what we use in the Apple Authorized training courses.

  • Can anyone recommend good Motion Tutorials?

Like Apple has for Aperture, and similar apps. I'm looking for some video tutorials that cut-to-the-chase ... to get up to speed on Motion? Free, or to purchase. And as fast as possible.
The job is requiring that I go way beyond my limited experience with Motion, in a hurry.
    All ears,

  • Motion 4 Behavior Tutorials Needed

I am struggling to find tutorials that will help me produce the effects I need. I would like to swing an object so that it eventually slows down.
I would also like to shake a camera or scene like the intro to the link below.
Any ideas for which behaviors to use or tutorials would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Start with Mark Spencer's site and then you must try investing many dozens of hours in simply using the application.
You can also google any particular filter or behavior and see what comes up.
We often see this plea for free or current tutorials for Motion and the simple answer is there just aren't very many. It is easier to buy Mark's book from Peachpit ad Patrick's book, make some hot chocolate, settle down for a long weekend.

  • Motion Upgrade - lost tutorials

I upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2 and trying to use the Motion tutorials that came with FCStudio 1. (Motion 2 tutorial as there is not Motion 3 tutorial that i can find). But the tutorial files are not there, however the media files are in the libraries. Anyone else have this issue? Should I install Motion from the pervious version and then do the motion upgrade in Final Cut Studio 2....i have a feeling this might mess everything up.

    Hi Patrick,
In the last hours i resolved this. Somehow the folder /Tutorial Projects that contained "Tutorial 1 Result.motn", "Tutorial 2 Result.motn", through "Tutorial 5..." was overwritten or deleted with the upgrade. I installed Motion 2 on another computer and brought the entire "Tutorial Projects" folder over via a memory stick. And the tutorial is working fine. Thanks for a reply.

  • It's there is a website with advance motion 5 tutorials like co-pilot for AE

I have search many websites but can't fine no advance tutorials

    http://www.applemotion.net/
http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB7982C0260F090C1 (these are all Motion 3/4 tutorials... still useful though.)
I have several miscellaneous Motion tutorials in this playlist:
         http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLF59B526290F162BB
I consider some of them rather advanced.  They are, however, mixed in with tutorials for other software (Photoshop, FCPX, iWeb, iDVD, etc...)
I'm sure others have favorite sources.

  • Poker Tournament style overlays in Apple Motion

Working on student film project and can not seem to find alot of info on doing this but...does anyone know of any good tutorials on how I might be able to replicate the Championship Poker styled lower thirds and overlays with cards and what not?  I am wondering how this can be done in Motion or FCP.
Or are there any good pre built overlay templates that I might use to fake this type of style?
    Thanks.

You'll want to do the Motion tutorials from Ripple Training.  Especially the one on Replicators, which does a lot of this same stuff.

  • Looking for a good Motion Tutorial

Hey all, my boss just got me Final Cut Studio for an upcoming project and I need to learn how to use DVD Studio Pro and Motion. Are there any good online tutorials out there? If they have some video, that'd be great.

For Motion, look at Mark Spencers site

  • Super Slow Motion and Snap Shot - How To

    Hi All
Just have 2 questions that i hope someone can help me with. Well, actually, one question about 2 different effects.
Is it possible to do a super slow motion with Motion? If so, how? Is there a tutorial for this i can access?
Also, how would you go about achieving this effect?

    Thanks in advance

Is it possible to do a super slow motion with Motion? If so, how? < </div>
Start with the manual and searching the online help system. Also search here and the creativecow.net for links to some fabulous Motion tutorials.
Super slow motion is not necessarily available, the term is relative. If you're shooting 30fps, you ahve only 30 discrete slices of each second and, even with advanced tools and lots of processing time, you can only expect to get mediocre slow motion. If you are shooting 120fps you have the temporal resolution, the basis, to process buttery smooth slow motion.
Hit google and search for overcrank, it's an ancient film technique

  • Is Motion 5 worth buying if...

    Hello
Is Motion 5 worth buying if you do all your movie editing in iMovie? I haven't used Final Cut since 2007 and have only heard bad things about the latest version. Also, iMovie seems to meet most of my needs, so haven't felt the need to use anything else.
However, being able to produce motion graphics is appealing to me, so is Motion 5 worth purchasing if you use iMovie?
And, if so, how easy is it to use?
    Thanks!
    Joe.

    Joe,
I'm not sure how you want to use a Motion project in iMovie, but if you wanted to overlay Motion text over iMovie video, no I don't think you can do that. I haven't used the newer iMovie very much, but don't think you can stack video clips like you can in other video editors.
You could, however, export the segment of iMovie where you want to superimpose text, bring that into Motion, create your text effect over the iMovie footage, export and import back into iMovie. Aside from the exporting and importing, the downside would be if you need to change the timing of something, you pretty much need to start over.
Do try the trial of FCPX. Coming from iMovie you'll have a leg up on those who came from FCP7 or earlier. The magnetic time line might be a challenge, but look for Kevin P. McAuliffe's Creative Cow podcasts and and Mark Spencer & Steve Martin's MacBreak Studio podcasts are very helpful. Shortly after FCPX was released they both did some podcasts on getting started and understanding how FCPX works. Also take a look at Izzy Video's offerings. All three also offer Motion tutorials. Izzy has some free training. And there's lots of good help on the FCPX forum. Once you get the basics of FCPX down, you'll be amazed how much more it can do that iMovie, especially as your need get more complicated.
And keep an eye out for Best Buy and Target discounts on iTunes gift cards. I've seen them up to 20% off. Best Buy seems to offer them every month or so. Target less frequently.

  • After Effects Like tutorials

I have seen some amazing tutorials on videocopilot website for after effects for years now and was wondering if there is a similar website from someone who does the same thing for Motion , cos from what I understand and have read Motion can do almost as much as After Effects?
Is there not anyone that can suggest any other blog or site that is not youtube! to find mind blowing tutorials on Motion (from some motion genius) and see what really can be done in Motion and how to do it.
    Peace

Zak Peric has tutorials on his website:

You can also find Mark on the Mac Break studio podcast on iTunes.
In addition to these and the other great resources in this thread, I've been posting Motion tutorials on Creative Cow in an attempt to help build up the community of Motion users. Not to blow my own horn...but "toot toot".

  • Tutorials on dvd player

    Hi,
I recently bought a dvd player with the idea of playing fcp & motion tutorials beside the computer for convenient learning whilst using fcp. The FCP & Ripple tutorial discs are not recognised by the region 1 player. Does anyone know of fcp & motion tutorials which CAN be played on a region 1 dvd player ?

I would doubt that its a region issue, more likely that it just doesn't like those discs
Do you have access to any other player with which you can test them (I'd expect your family or friends may let you try it).
You might also want to contact the fine folks at Ripple Training and check with them too

  • Color Correcting but advanced!

Hey guys, here I am with yet another question. I know how to color correct pretty well but not as well as I want to. I bought some apple books to teach me but I still can't figure it out. Here's my problem, just say it's two people and any background that has many different colors, how do I leave the 2 people in full color but everything else in black and white? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I was taught that any question is not dumb, whats dumb is not to ask any questions at all.
    Thanks.

In FCP, put your shot on V1 and a copy of it on V2. Select both and ctrl/right click on them and choose Send To Motion.
In Motion put a desaturate filter on the lower layer. Motion has a freehand mask tool that makes a bezier shape. Select your upper layer and then select the the freehand mask tool and draw around the "color" area of your upper layer. Feather as needed. Turn on record (red button next to Play), step forward on your timeline and adjust the control points of your mask shape. When you're done, save it, quit. Fall back into FCP and render.
Couple of points: Motion loads everything into memory - no streaming from disk - so you're gonna want to limit your shots to a minute or so... And, this isn't for the faint of heart or the uninformed, you really should do your Motion tutorials and understand it before doing this.
    Good luck,
    Patrick

  • Change over time setup between operations

    Hi,
    1) In the Discrete MFG process, there 2 operations. In between there is a change over time or cleaning up time.
Where do we capture these change over or cleaning timings?
    2) If i have 2 simultaneous operations, how do we handle them in routing?
    Thanks,
    Jey

  • Painting in THREE dimensions or two?

Motion 3 is supposed to boast 3D paint features.
I can edit the points of my paint / bezier strokes in the x and y dimensions, but I would love to be able to move any given point in the X, Y, AND Z axes. Is there ANY way at all to do this?
Is there a specific TYPE of stroke I need to use?
    Thanks for any help.
    MS

You might want to visit videocopilit.com and look around for some of the free Motion tutorials. There are other free sites, too, like creativecow.net.
The "3dPaint" feature allows the dabs of paint to have depth and, if you open the advanced tab, you can introduce 3D particles from your paint dabs.
I have not been able to figure out how to create a motion path in x-y-z space and have the paint follow the path. This is easy in After Effects.
I hope you find something helpful and maybe you can give me some pointers on 3D paint. Please let us know.

  • Inspector not updating

    Okay, heres an odd problem.
I'm working through the Motion tutorials that were included with the software. (the Dolphins project for anyone whos familiar with the lessons). I'm having a problem with the inspector not indicating that a behavoir has been applied to a text object (no cog icon next to the parameter) when a behavoir has clearly been applied. The applied behavoir is "text tracking", according to the tutorial the Tracking parameter in the Layout section of the Text tab of the Inspector should indicate a behavoir has been applied (cog icon) and the slider/value should update in real time to show the changing parameter values whilst playing the project. Not happening! I've created a new project with just text and applied the text tracking behavoir to it, same thing, the inspector tells me that a behavoir has been applied under the behavoirs tab but under the Text - Format section the tracking parameter is unchanged with no icon displayed. The inspector is unlocked.
Anyone know why this might be happening?
    Thanks in advance.
    Imac 24" 2.16 intel 2 Duo 2GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hi Patrick.
The tracking of the text is certainly altering in the canvas (the gap between each character gets wider over time). The text object is selected correctly and the inspector tells me that I have a behavoir applied under the behavoirs tab, but the text tab/format pane shows no change in the tracking section. If I control click the tracking parameter in the inspector and choose "oscillate" for example then the slider comes to life and a cog icon appears next to the tracking section. The inspector seems to be reporting real time changes fine for other behavoirs but not for this Text Tracking one.
