Motion and Aperture Library

In Motion Library photos tab I see my iPhoto library but I would like to see the photos in my Aperture library.  The Aperture library is on a different hard drive.  Any thoughts on how I can get those photos to show up in Motion?  They are visible in FCPX

Came across this and several identical threads after running into this with my first launch of Motion 5.0.1
Really makes no sense that FCPX can access the Aperture library, but that Motion can only access iPhoto.  As Lars says, pro apps should link to pro apps.
Exporting from Aperture is of course a workaround, but having a link to the Aperture version (equivalent to Adobe 'smart object") is the way this should be done IMHO.
Join me in sending a wish to Apple via the Motion > Provide Motion Feedback menu...

  • HT204414 How to import both iPhoto and Aperture library to iCloud Photo Library (Photos app)

    Hi all,
Based on the article here (Designate a System Photo Library in Photos - Apple Support) has anyone tried to bring both an iPhoto and Aperture library into iCloud Photo Library so that both libraries are available as one in iCloud and form the one Photos app library rather than being seen as separate libraries. I don't want the two separated as I have 200GB's of space in iCloud which is plenty to hold the two's collective space of about 40GB's.
It seems as though the procedure is pretty simple.
First of all set one of your libraries as the System Photo Library, this will happen naturally with setting up Photos app for the first time. I chose iPhoto as the original library.
Let this library upload all it's photo's to iCloud over a few minutes, hours, days etc.
When finished, enter your other library by closing Photos app and reopening while holding down the Option key (usually Alt). In this case I now opened the Aperture library that it had found.
Under Preferences > iCloud set this library as the System Photo Library and in turn it will have the ability to upload to iCloud.
When it's finished I suppose you will have both iPhoto AND Aperture pictures in the one iCloud Photo Library.
At least I hope the above makes sense.
Anybody already tried this with good / bad results, let us know here.

found it here  - 'If you designate a new library as the System Photo Library and then turn on iCloud Photo Library, the photos and videos in the new library will merge with those already in your iCloud Photo Library. If you want to keep the contents of your photo libraries separate, don’t turn on iCloud Photo Library for more than one library in Photos.'
That bit seems clear. You can merge photos from different libraries by making them 'designated' first  .
BUT  this means that Photos app only shows you library A , or library B, depending on which one you have opened , but Icloud library contains photos from Both library A and library B .
    is this correct ?
and if so, does it not get a but confusing ?!?

  • Import both libs, iphoto and aperture library

    Hello,
how can i import all my photos from the aperture and the iphoto library and join them together in the new Photos app without trouble (without double photos)?
    Thanks

By first merging the iPhoto and Aperture Libraries, then deleting any duplicates, then migrating to Photos.

  • FCPX and Aperture Library Issues

Does anyone else have issues with FCPX being unbearably slow when loading an Aperture library when accessing the Photos window on the lower right? I have all the most current versions of both Aperture and FCPX. I have a Macbook Pro Retina with i7 2.6gig processor. 16 gigs of RAM. My Aperture library is very large, about 300,000+ images. The Aperture is located on an external Thunderbolt drive. It can take as much as an hour for the still images to show up in the photo window. Any suggestions our there for speeding this process up. It's one of the main reasons I use Aperture, the supposed terrific integration between all Apple programs. I this speed it's much faster to just export the images and forget about going through FCPX. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

If you don't need all 300,000+ images in FCP, I would export what you need and import it into the event library.

  • Iphoto and aperture library file folder problem

    Hi all,
    I have a problem.
I want to have aperture and iphoto folders organized as itunes files fiolder. is possible?
I see in my aperure library that master folder (I have selected the option copy files in library) there are many and many date folder (many of them are empty) and I don't like this method of organization.
if I don't  check the option to copy files and keep my database with only thumb, I have the problem that if I modify or delete a photo the original remain untouched.
    please there are solutions?
    davide

    "(where?)"
Where you specify.  Please see section 6 on this page (the User Manual is slightly out-of-date -- substitute "Original" for "Master"):
Choose a location for the imported files by doing one of the following:
To store imported masters in the Aperture library: Choose “In the Aperture Library” from the Store Files pop-up menu.
To store imported masters as referenced image files, audio files, or video files in their current location: Choose “In their current location” from the Store Files pop-up menu.
To store imported masters as referenced image files, audio files, or video files in the Pictures folder on your hard disk: Choose Pictures from the Store Files pop-up menu, and then choose whether you want the files moved or copied to the Pictures folder by clicking the “Move files” or “Copy files” button.
To store imported masters as referenced image files, audio files, or video files in a location other than the Pictures folder: Choose “Choose” from the Store Files pop-up menu and select a folder. In the dialog that appears, choose a location to store the imported masters, then click Open. Choose Project Name from the Subfolders pop-up menu to specify that the files be stored in a folder with the same name as the project. Choose whether you want the image files moved or copied to the new location by clicking the “Move files” or “Copy files” button.
" (are you sure? I don't find this option)"
    I'm pretty sure.  From
    Deleting Images from the Browser
If you delete the last version in a version stack, Aperture asks whether you want to delete the master. If you confirm that you want to delete the master, the master is moved to the Aperture Trash.
When an image is represented in the Browser by a single version, you can select the version and delete it, and the corresponding master is deleted as well.
When you empty the Aperture Trash you should get a dialog box similar to this one.  Note the field with the check box:

  • Moved from MBP to iMac and aperture library has some odd issues.

    Hello
I have just got myself a nice new iMac today and I have copied my aperture 3 library over from the Macbook Pro and I thought all was well but I now seem to have some problems.
Some of the images would load and then just disapear but if I zoom in they are there? If I export the version I just get a black image.
In the other project as I go through and the image loads but then gets obscure makes across it or its half blue.
Then when I was going through the library it was jumping back to a image I looked at before.
If anyone could help with this it would be fantastic because the reason I got the iMac was for aperture 3.
    Thanx in advance!!
    Spoony

You may find the iMac is still processing. This could take a while to complete. Is it showing the little grey wheel. If so just leave it to get on with it. Trying to do other things at the same time is too much for it to cope with. The r.a.m. will probably be working overtime with less capacity than it really needs to do the job efficiently. You don't say how large or small the library is. Or the iMac spec, but i would be surprised if it's anything other than this. You could phone the Apple Support team to confirm. It's free with the new machine. Allan

  • File Location in Aperture Library

So, I'm new to aperture having transitioned from Lightroom.
When I set up my aperture ilbrary I oould have sworn I maked keep images in current location (where I had them stored in LR). Those files show in finder to be 681GB. When I look at my new aperture libray, it's 745GB. So I presume that I've inadvertanly set up an aperture library with the images stored within. Is this a correct assumption?
If I leave it this way, what do I lose? Can these enormous files become corrupt? I only do a backup offsite once a month or so.
Should I delete this new aperture library and re-import w/o moving the files?

Based on the size, I would say that it is indeed a 'Managed Library' where all your images are being stored inside the 'Aperture Library' package.
If I leave it this way, what do I lose? Can these enormous files become corrupt? I only do a backup offsite once a month or so.
Other than an OS corruption or Disk corruption, it is the database inside the Aperture Library that can become corrupt, which does not compose a huge issue as you can always manually remove the Master images in the worst case scenario.
Should I delete this new aperture library and re-import w/o moving the files?
Many people choose a 'Referenced Library' (which is what Lightroom uses) for a number of reasons. The most common reasons are; 1 - long term storage needs for Masters may exceed internal drive space; 2 - using manually created 'Finder' folders is preferable to using the Library Inspector view; 3 - Master files will be stored in an easily accessible form if the Aperture database gets corrupted beyond fixing and you at least have the Masters already filed logically and easily managed for a new system or library.
In the end, it is up to you; but deleting the new library and re-importing while leaving the Masters in their current location should be in line with what you have been doing with Lightroom. This would mean doing backups of the Masters and Aperture Library as separate operations (not a big deal if you have the external resources for copying).

  • Iphoto and aperture start up problem with Yosemite

Just found out that after installing Yosemite, both my iPhoto and aperture library took very long in order to show up contents after start up. Not sure what causes the delay, does anyone else experience the same problem? For reference, I am using late 2013 15" Macbook pro.

In the case of Aperture you can open the Activity window and check what Aperture is doing.
From Aperture's main menu bar:   Window  > Show Activity
When Aperture launched the first time, I saw the following activities, that took a noticable amount of time:
    Importing iCloud photos
    Scanning faces
    Rendering previews for iCloud videos.

  • Having Aperture library on its own drive?

I'm wondering if it would be advantageous to move the Aperture library to its own drive. I currently have 2 different internal RAID 0 volumes. One of them is comprised of two WD Raptor drives and is my boot drive and contains my applications and Aperture library. The other drive contains (some of) the referenced files and my data. Given that I am a heavy Aperture user (350,000 referenced images in a 150gb library) I'm wondering if I wouldn't be better off having the library be the only thing on the Raptors. I'm guessing that with a library this big, disk fragmentation could be a major bottleneck, plus I would also gain some speed advantages by having my volume only be 50% full (instead of 75%).
Do you think I am making this overcomplicated for a small speed advantage, or I might I see significant gains?
    thanks,
    Dave

    Hi both,
Firstly i typo'ed the RAID number (sorry but sounds like you realized).
Subjective / empirical results from my own tests with my needs in mind:
I've noticed small performance improvements moving from FW400 to eSATA externals but frankly with 8Mpix/24Mb files sizes for the RAW's it's not been a significant contribution to decision criteria for me. Moving from USB 2 to FW400 was significant, esp. for launching Aperture, importing and exporting. During editing/adjustments, FW400 was quite acceptable.
As for RAM, moving from 2.5Gb to 4.5Gb gained me some when I was also running PS CS3 and other apps. (Mail, Safari, MS Office 2004/Rosetta etc.). At 4.5Gb, I rarely run into much virtual memory paging. My suggestion is to launch Activity Monitor and just see how you are using RAM for your workload. More RAM will achieve nothing at all if no paging to disk is taking place.
Aperture is reasonably multi-threaded but import to some extent and export primarily are the best examples of where the extra cores add value. Once into image manipulation, my 4-cores tick along at idle for the most part and sadly I Activity Monitor doesn't show GPU performance. Maybe the X1900 G5 card is maxed out (likely) but I don't know. I did a test with 2 x graphics cards under Aperture v1.1 but it showed no improvement whatsoever. Unknown whether Aperture v2.x will multi-thread gpu calls but I think not .... possibly core image limitation in Leopard.

  • Where is my Aperture library?

I have two Aperture libraries, "Aperture library" and Aperture 3 Sample library". When I use "Switch to library" under "file" I am told the path to one is at Users/<username>/Documents/Aperture/Aperture 3 Sample Library.aplibrary and I am told the other is at Users/<username>/Library/Aperture Library.aplibrary. I can find "Aperture 3 Sample Library.aplibrary" by following the path, but "Library" does not exist under "Users/<username>/" so I cannot find "Aperture Library.aplibrary"! I searched for ".aplibrary" in spotlight and it shows only "Aperture 3 Sample Library.aplibrary". I migrated to a new 27" iMac with Lion OS a couple of months ago and have made numerous updates to Aperature on my new iMac. I can switch back and forth between "Aperture 3 Sample Library" and "Aperture Library" and all of my updates are in "Aperture Library", but it makes me nervous that I cannot find it.

    Fred,
Hold down the 'Option' key while opening the 'Go' menu in the menu bar at top of desktop and you will then see the 'Library' option.
Click it and it will open the Library folder.
Typically, the Aperture library is held in 'Users/<username>/Pictures' folder. You can drag the Aperture library to that folder and then double-click it to open it. That will set it as the default library and location. You will still be able to access the sample library by using the Switch to Library command.
Note - I am not sure what placed the Aperture library in the hidden Library folder, but definitely suggest placing it in the aforementioned Pictures folder of your account.

  • Reformatting Aperture Library

Hey all!  I'm hoping to get a more informed opinion about a restructure of Aperture that I need to do.  If you've talked to me already, you know that we managed to entirely delete our Aperture library by accident, and basically haven't stopped freaking out since.  The story had a happy ending, and we found that we had somehow managed to restart Time Machine backing up to a RAID drive (it was hiding inside of a sparsebundle, and this took an unfortunate amount of figuring out on our part), and so the vast majority of our pictures were okay.  So I want to create two new aperture libraries, one for clients and one for family.  The HD library is a hot mess, and I was planning to restore it to the most recent version on Time Machine, and then delete duds to buy space, and then re-import the photos that we have loaded since the last backup.  But there isn't memory space to copy in the old library, and obviously there isn't enough space to write a second copy to be able to look at and compare with to make sure there's nothing glitchy or missing.
My only other thought is that I would have to trash the current library and empty the trash to buy the space to start two new libraries from scratch and reimport the masters, losing all of the version information.
I guess another option could be to delete everything I can from the current HD library, empty, and then try the restore function.
I'll give you a brief description of where things are right now...
HD library-houses masters from Nov.9 onward.  Has all the original project structure from before the master deletion accident.
RAID-Time Machine backups in a sparse bundle
-I copied all masters out of the backup folders and into other folders on the RAID.  I wanted to  make sure they stayed accessible.
Many masters are both on the HD and on the RAID, except for family pictures going from January 2012 to October 2013.  They are only on the RAID.
Your input is valued!  I'm pretty nervous about screwing this up.
    Naomi

Are you or were you using more than just TimeMachine? that should be, redundant backup sets especially for important files should be a must.
Why RAID? too much for a single 3-4TB drive to handle your backup needs?
RAID1 may sound good but having two separate backup sets and methods would be better.
Sounds like you need to invest in a new drive or two, anytime you talk of "having to trash current library." Why are things being left in Trash? temporary for now while you try to rebuild and get your files and Aperture library catalogue back in shape.
You don't say how large - and that is something I would be curious and want to know as to what to do going forward. Many users put Aperture on a pair of SSDs for speed and improved performance on PCIe SSD controller which helps, and that also frees up your 4 drive bays (booting from an SSD is also a wise idea from performance standpoint).
At least gets you an external backup which is always good and off line when not needed and free up drive bay for work files and drives. I assume your RAID is using two internal drive bays or is that not so?
Using a USB3 PCIe (or SATA3/USB3 combo) and something like this:
    http://www.amazon.com/Drive-Security-Local-Backup-WDBFJK0040HBK-NESN/dp/B00E3RH6 1W/
Another piece of the puzzle, Carbon Copy Cloner to manage and backup your system (bootable backup) as well as your data (one volume to volume but can archive copies and versions). One reason I use and recommend CCC, so you will enable the checksum for all file copies to insure their integrity.
    Clone your system:

    From www.macperformanceguide.com tips:
A robust backup approach must have at least the following properties:
Physical risks—not subject to the same physical risks as the original data, e.g., stored well away from the source computer.
Different hardware—a backup stored on the same drive as the original is not a backup. Multiple backups on the same drive of the same data are one backup; they all are lost together; they are only semi-redundant.
Redundancy—in the event that a backup is needed, a single backup will not do; it becomes an original. Hence a bare minimum of two full backups is essential (three or more preferred on separate drives).
Data integrity—a backup might be initially fine, but that is not guaranteed to last over time. A program like IntegrityChecker for down-the-road data validation is important in some situations, including DVD and BluRay backups: how can it be known that the files remain intact?
      Tips
Eliminate potential for user errors: use cloning and establish naming conventions .
Eliminate potential for hardware confusion: mixing many too-small and old drives for partial this and partial that is a serious risk (from complexity). Migrate to large external hard drives with a long lifespan (enough capacity).
Redundancy can include mixed storage types, e.g., hard drive backup, DVD or BluRay disks, cloud storage.
Hard drives do not last forever and should be replaced every 3-4 years. They should also be erased at least once a year, and a fresh backup made (to re-magnetize and to force use of the drive on which data is stored).
Always perform manual “sanity checks”: do not assume the backup process has worked. At the least, use the Finder Get Info window on the original and the backup.

  • I lost my aperture library

    I lost my aperture library

    Margot,
I do not have Aperture 2, so I really cannot try out any fixes on my own Mac.
There was a message that I should "sink" aperture library with IPhoto library.
Did it suggest to "merge" your iPhoto library and  Aperture library? Or to sync with one of your mobile devices?
"my library needs to be upgraded"
This message usually appears, when you have have updated Aperture to a newer version. Then it will need to upgrade your Aperture library to the new program version. Did you run Software update from the Apple menu recently?
If Aperture tells you, that you need to upgrade your library, make a backup copy of your Aperture library (use the Finder to drag and drop your Aperture library to an external disk). By default your Aperture library is in your "Pictures" folder and called "Aperture Library.aplibrary".
Then hold down both the options/alt key and the command key (⌘⌥) firmly at the same time, and with these keys held down, double click the Aperture icon to launch Aperture. You now should see the FIrst Aid panel with option to repair and to rebuild. Try "repair database" first.
Aperture should now start a repair of your library and afterwards upgrade to the current Aperture version.
Repairing and updating can take a long time, sometimes even hours, if your library is large. Don't interrupt it, if Aperture starts to repair your library.
Post back, if this does not work.

  • Backing up and Restoring a large Aperture library

One of our departments is looking to backup their Aperture library (170 Gb and growing). They would like to do an initial backup of everything, and then incrementally from that point. We tried using Retrospect it backed up fine although it took about 30 hours to do it, but when we tested the restore after the full back up a good portion of the photos were inaccessible.
We then backed up a small portion of the library and then tried a restore and all the photos are there.
    Any suggestions?
Does Vault allow for incremental backups?
    Thank for any help
    Denny

I simply copy Aperture Library file (approximately 76 Gb) on an external Hard disk (FW800).
Time of copying approximately 1 hour.
Thus backup copy works perfectly. I have one more Mac and Aperture (MacBook). I once a week copy Aperture Library file on MacBook, it as reserve working station for me, and also on some photos session I take MacBook with myself. Aperture (witch backup library from iMac) works on it fine.

If it is still slow after removing Symantec, you may need a RAM upgrade. Yosemite can run very poorly on older machines with only 4 GB RAM.
