Motion and Final Cut render glitch
I am having a problem with renders, The Problem seems to be in Final Cut and Motion. Usually when I bring .motn in to my Final cut sequence, though some times the glitches happen in Motion as well. When I rerender, the glitches will usually appear in a different location than the first render.
These are picts of what the glitches look like.

I am running Final Cut Studio 5 and editing HD 720p30
I will be monitoring the thread so ask for clarification as needed. Thank you.
In the olden day, when SCSI was the drive protocol, render glitches that occurred in different places on every render were usually caused by bad connections between the drives or between the drives and the computer.
Render glitches that happen in the same place each time are almost always caused by errors in the media files. Sometimes they are invisible until an application like Motion or After Effects tries to use them.

Is there a way to run Motion and Final Cut Pro on Separate Machines?
Is there a way to run Motion and Final Cut Pro from the same Final Cut Studio license on separate machines? We hadn't realised when we bought Final Cut Studio that it wouldn't allow this. Our editor doesn't use motion, and while I mainly use After Effects on our motion graphics machine, I was wanting to try using motion for some particle effects. Unfortunately, it won't let me open it while Final Cut is running on our editor's machine. I can understand not letting two copies of same application run under the same serial number at the same time, but it would be nice to be able to use both programs that we own concurrently. At very least it would be good to warn you that this isn't possible in the product description, not in some fine print license agreement once you have already bought the software.
-MattI do not know of any software, in any platform that can operate from the same license over a network simultaneously. This is the exact reason for the existence of Volume Licensing. If for example a project ran in each one of the included applications from different sources that were not an active network, I doubt you would have a problem.Like, doing a project at work and geting the outcome with the Powerbook at home...Sorta!

Motion and Final Cut timeline audio
Working on a long Motion/Final Cut project for the first time. Started off with a ten minute long screen recording of my narrator recording a keynote presentation. Brought that video into Final Cut and have been sending chunk after chunk into Motion to create the actual graphics, all of which are heavily matched up to the sound.
Now, (of course!) the narrator wants to rerecord almost all of his dialog. In tests, if I place a new audio in the Final Cut timeline (along with the Motion clips), there's no way for me to tell the Motion file to use the updated audio - if I link the Motion clip and new audio in the Timeline, then edit the Motion clip in Motion, it still references the original audio. Is there a simple way I can tell Motion to use the updated audio instead, or (what I fear is the case) am I stuck with having to manually dump each edit audio clip directly back into the individual motion file? Because my video is heavily audio-timed, I need to have the audio in the Motion file.
Thanks!this sort of thing happens all the time. Of course you really have to lock down the audio before spending too much time on the pictures, but even with the best intentions it happens.
You could try to edit the v/o in fcp against the preexisting pictures first, to try and get it to work better. But then your only option is to send audio to the motion projects.
Its too late now but it might be useful to think about in the future. Rather than sending clips to motion, i export it frrom fcp, could be audio, could be pictures, could be both. I bring that clip into a motion project and work on it. If it needs updating, I re-exeport from fcp and relink the media in the motion file.

Motion and Final Cut Pro Problem
I recently updated my computer and went with the new Quad-Core Mac. I had to reload the Final Cut Pro Studio software, and I've got a problem that is vexing me to no end.
I can import a Motion template (one that I've designed and even the Apple produced templates), but I try to view it in Viewer or when I place the Motion template on the timeline it won't work. Nothing visible on either the Viewer or the Canvas when I try to playback. I can right click and open the template in Motion and have the elements appear and work properly, but nada once it comes back into Final Cut.
What gives?
JohnI find the roundtrip to Motion to be less than useful when there are a lot of layers involved. What works better for me is to export a movie using the same settings you're using in FCP and then import that. If the settings in Motion match the FCP settings, no rendering should be required. Unfortunately, you can't then use the "open in editor" function to fix anything... but must reopen the Motion project and export again.

How can I create transparent animated text with Motion and Final Cut Pro?
Hi all,
I am trying to replicate an effect that a previous video editor did in a project, but I can't contact them.
They made animated text in Live Type, and saved it as a QT movie. When this text is placed over existing video in the FCP project, the text is "transparent", basically it acts like text created in FCP (You can see the background image behind the text, like through the middle of the letter "o").
I have made some animated text in Motion, but when I save it as a QT movie, and bring it into FCP, the whole 1280x720 screen is covered by this movie, and I have to crop it so it does not cover the background image. It is all black except for the text. And of course the text is not on a transparent layer. Any ideas how I can create this effect with animated text? I've tried messing with transparency and overlay settings, nothing seems to work.
Running latest version of Final Cut Studio...
Thanks
DaveJust bring the Motion (.motn) project into FCP and lay it over your clip.
The QT you're exporting has to carry the alpha channel (animation codec, million+ colors), but don't waste your time/disk space with that. Just bring the motion project into FCP.

Setting for both, Motion and Final Cut - Anamorphic?
Hi there
The settings dialogue in final cut somewhat differs from the one in motion regarding the pixel format. In FCP the pixel format can be 'square' AND anamorphic 16:9. In Motion when a pixel ratio other than one is entered (1.77 for 16:9) the pixel format box changed to 'eigene' - that reads probably other in english.
Now: only when I use square and anamorphic 16:9 in FCP and square | 1 in Motion, the aspect ration is preserved in FCP, but on the right and left side of the Motion Clip there is some space left. When I deactivate the anamorphic Setting in FCP, the clip fills the canvas but is distorted.
My resolution is 1920 x 1080.
Help is much apprechiated.
J.If your resolution is truly 1920x1080 (that is to say, you're not working with HDV for another format that really uses 1440x1080), then you want square pixels all the way. Uncheck FCP's anamorphic setting.

Problems with effects being lost between motion and final cut?
Hi I have an older version of motion, I am editing a video for my course and I have made some motion graphics with some blurs and fades etc (just this kids of effect, nothing else), when they are imported into final cut they disapear all i have is static text or graphics that crawl across the screen...
Is this a bug?
If I let software update do its job would these problems go away.
Just so you know Final cut 5.1.4 and Motion 2.0.1
thanks in advance if anyone can help.
MattGreat fix....I started a compression to NTSC and it should be done in 3 hours, I will then boot up FCP, chose a 1 minute clip...follow your directions to the T. and compare the results....I did have this solved when I used NTSC 4:3 before; however, when I chose the menu with the mpeg2 codec, I thought that it would be faster....

Ati HD 2600 XT man enough for the job? Motion and Final cut
Hi all, just got my new 2008 Mac Pro with a ATI HD 2600 XT graphics card
I have a dell 24"monitoer running at 1920x1200 pixels
I am just about to buy the final cut studio package and I'm wondering if I need to spring for the 8800GT card?
so my question is: just how taxing on the gpu is Motion? is the Ati HD 2600 XT man enough for the job running at 1920x1200 pixels?Rob Morgan at Barefeats.com has some benchmarks that compare the 2600 XT to the 1900 XT in a 2.8 8 core machine. In his test the 2600 XT was only a hair slower with Motion. I have not noticed any performance hit with the 2600 XT. I plan on sticking with the 2600 XT.

Bought computer with software on the computer don't have password. Is there anyway to upgrade?
Probably one of those craigslist ads.
Guys take a computer, pack it full with stolen software, and then charge more than the computer is worth.
But: no upgrades, no support. And you'll never know if there's not some malware, spyware somewhere.
I wouldn't want to work with such software.
It's really the best to wipe the drive, and only use your own software. Charge it under "experience".
And it's only $50... -
Hello,
A while back I posted a thread asking about using the font manager "Suitecase" and Final Cut Pro. It was clear that Suitecase should not be used with Final Cut. I work at an ad agency and we have a database of 4000 fonts. Does anyone know of a good font managing program that plays well with Final Cut? Using the standard font manager that comes with an Apple computer is not an option. Also, using Borris 3D is also not the answer because of the time it takes to create and make changes to a slate. Help me!
Thanks in advance.
-AmberAny font management program should make fonts available to your system and all the apps in the same way, right? What's so bad about Font Book anyway? I was so relieved not to have to deal with Suitcase and /or Font Reserve once I got on OS X. I can see all my fonts, turn them on and off, it's easy to look for special characters, arrange the fonts in different collections, etc.
I agree that it makes me miserable to have to open the Boris Generators' type controls every time I want to make a change, and then not be able to preview my changes while I am working. Also, there is no way to duplicate a Boris generator and edit it and have it show up in the same position on the screen. If only they could simply give you an anchor/origin point for the text that acutally related to the alignment of the text object, as any normal, thinking person would expect. Also, try this one, copy and paste several copies of a Boris Generator in a sequence, put different text in each one, and try changing the alignment of just one of them, now notice that evey other generator in your entire sequence will automatically change its alignment as well. You could try to solve this by making the clips independent, but, oh wait, that's right, YOU CAN'T! Ha! jokes on you. Now please start over by recreating each of your Boris type objects from scratch. WHEE! (acutally, the method here is to format one and then drag it to your browser and reuse it from there, but don't copy and paste a Boris generator, ever.)
Add to this the way that these objects will randomly disappear or use vestigal render files when you export or encode mpeg-2, but never when previewing the timeline, and the way that Boris will render any project that uses a Boris generator unopenable if you replace your system Helvetica with the Adobe version, and you'll wind up with a lot less hair at the end of your day.
All that said, I use it all the time, and grit my teeth in frustration the whole way as I re-create, replace, re-format, troubleshoot, and double and triple check evey second of my work every step of the way, and re-encode, and reformat again, and troubleshoot some more.
If I have lots of lower 3rds or IDs to do, where I want them to come up in the same position on the screen, I find FCP's generic type generator works ok, as long as you never move the generator clip from 0,0 in the motion tab. The generator only converts the font to pixels once, and moving the resulting clip resample the video image of the type instead of regenerating the type from the font in te new position, which means that if you drag the clip to a new position in the canvas in wireframe mode, it will look blurry, always. Use the origin crosshairs in the type controls instead. Of course, the only generator that allows you to do this is the one that does not allow you to have multiple fonts, sizes, or style in a single object. The one thing I use type generators for most often is to make a lower 3rd template for use throughout a long program that will always occupy the same position on the screen each time I use it, and I wish I could use two different sizes in one object. I can't believe that this is the one thing that is impossible in FCP.
Another thing about the FCP type generators is that they do not support font families at all. Try Univers, for instance, and you'll notice that instead of 45 Light, 55 regular, and 65 Bold, you have Plain, Italic, Bold, and Bold/Italic. Notice also that if you choose Plain, you get italic. Fun! The way this appears to work is that, within a certain family of fonts, FCP will take the first four that it sees and assign them to Plain, Bold, etc., in the alphebetical order that the source files would appear in the finder (acutally I think there is an even more arcane, less logical method it uses to pick these styles, but I have never been able to figure it out).
These three issues, no character-specific formatting, quality loss if the clip is repositioned, and the inability to support font families, have never been resolved since FCP 1.0 - the tool remains essentially unchanged. Perhaps they figure that anyone who really cares enough about their project never uses it anyway, so why bother fixing it? But I acutally do use it with fairly good results, just never move the clip from 0,0, and if I need to use Univers 65 Bold, I just turn off all the other Univers families to force FCP to recognize 65 bold as "Plain".
ok, font rant over, we now return you to our regularly scheduled programming. -
IMovie and Final Cut Pro unexpectedly when importing 720p MPEG files
I'm running iMovie/FinalCutPro on Yosemite. Every time I try and import a 720p MP4 with 60FPS both programs quit unexpectedly while generating the thumbnails. The files I am using have run/imported without any problems into Quicktime, VLC, Adobe Premiere and my brother's iMovie on his Macbook Pro machine.
What I have done in no particular order:
1. Cache/preferences cleaning
2. Re-install iMovie
3. Delete all codecs except AIC and AppleMPEG2
4. Install codecs (Perian, divx, xvid)
5. Delete Flash Player
6. Repair permissions
7. Repair hard drive in safe mode
8. Delete iPhoto database, tinker with GarageBand
9. I logged in as a guest user and the problem persists
10. 540p MP4 with 30FPS and that had no problem importing into iMovie
I believe I have isolated the issue to a quicktime engine that is either corrupted or defective that is causing both iMovie and Final Cut Pro to crash. I could use Adobe Premiere or another machine, but I prefer iMovie and would like it to work on my machine. The only solution I can think of is reinstalling the OS, but I really am against that.
Let me know if you have any other ideas. Please see the Problem Report below:

I'm screen capturing QuickTime movies of usage of a website via a web browser to include in a video production. I'm using Ambrosia's Snapz Pro X to do the video capture. I've sized the browser to 720x480 for the capture. I'm exporting the capture using the animation codec (which looks much better than a DV stream), but it comes in at 8 frames per second, which doesn't mesh with my timeline (at 29.97 fps).
Is Snapz Pro X a good solution to do this, or is there a better program to do this? If Snapz Pro X is a good choice for this, what settings should I change in the program to get the best video for use in Final Cut?AFAIK Snapz records the screen activity into RAM as OS-level screen calls and then renders the file to your drive with whatever CODEC you choose when you save the clip. So the choice of CODEC won't affect the frame rate, but the size of the capture frame will.
The Animation CODEC is the best choice as it retains the full fidelity of the screen grab (no loss of quality). The main thing to remember when configuring the Animation CODEC is to set the keyframe rate to 1 (every frame is a keyframe). Final Cut does a bad job of handling key frames in the Animation CODEC when making cuts edits between keys - you'll get weird artifacts.
This makes for big files and Final Cut will want to conform the clips to 29.97 (or whatever timebase your using) so it will need to render the clips before you can edit them. Make sure your timeline is set to the same frame size, CODEC and KEY FRAME rate as the clips coming in.
Once you've done your cuts and are happy with your edit, output directly to whatever delivery CODEC your going to use: MPEG2 if DVD, Flash, H-264 etc for web. Avoid rendering to DV as the DV CODEC slaughters text and hard edged objects.
My two cents worth.

Is there an easier way to work with adobe after effects and final cut pro x
I use adobe after effects and I am thinking about deleting motion and compressor ( I can always install again). If you have a good reason to keep those apps let me know because I don't want to be hasty. If I delete them and stick with after effects and final cut pro... Is there a secret to easy working between FCPX and adobe after effects?
ThanksYou'll go from FCP X to and from Motion a lot easier than AE. Motion does pretty much anything AE does, most of the time faster and easier. Without Motion, you can't do custom templates. You can't customize the encoding of files without Compressor. Why would you want to remove them from your system? Leave them, use AE if you want along side of them. But I'd learn Motion first. Cause AE doesn't read FCPXML, so going back and forth between them is a PITA.
And until Apple releases the round trip between FCP X and Motion fully, we have this gem:
http://www.alexnking.com/2012/02/20/fcpx-send-to-motion-app/ -
I would like to export an edit from final cut to after effects, so that the AE project has a separate layer for each clip in the original edit (or something similar).
i'm sure i could do this if i was exporting to motion, or from premier to AE, but i'd like to stick with final cut and AE for now.
does anyone know of a third party app which could let AE and final cut communicate a little better?
thanks in advance.I'll second Mylenium's recommendation of Automatic Duck software. It's even recommended in the
"Supported import formats" section of After Effects CS3 Help:
"The Automatic Duck Pro Import AE tool extends your ability to import assets in various formats, including those used by popular non-linear editing systems. For more information, see the Automatic Duck website: www.adobe.com/go/learn_ae_automaticduckpiae." -
If I have video in imovie and final cut pro X, does that mean there are two copies of the video, one for each piece of SW? If so, how do I get rid of the imovie events and keep only the Final Cut Pro X events (video)? I don't want multiple copies of the same video stored on the hard drive.
If you import to FCP directly from the Camera or from a camera archive, you would likely import choosing Optimized Files which would go to a FCP event that is in ProRes 422 codec. This would be in addition to your iMovie Event which would import using the Apple Intermediate Codec. So you would have two copies of the same information. An AIC copy and a larger ProRes copy.
However, if you use FILE/IMPORT/iMOVIE EVENT LIBRARY, FCP will not duplicate the event files from iMovie. It will treat them as referenced files, and will point to the iMovie Event files in the reference. So there is no duplication. You will be editing Apple Intermediate Codec files in FCP.
However, FCP will create Event folders. In addition to the reference information, these will contain thumbnail files that are compatible with FCP, stabilization and analysis files that are compatible with FCP, as well as any intermediate render files that are associated with the Event.
So in this case, there is no duplication of the large event files, but there is some duplication of the small thumbnail files.
I have several terabytes of iMovie Events, which are now all available in FCP. Believe me, I would know if they were duplicated because all my disks would be full.
