Motion and Text?

To all my fellow mac users,
Hello. This is my first time posting. I hope that what I am asking is not already out there, but I have spent several days looking at this and I just can’t come up with an answer. Here it is. I love those Brain Ages game on my Nintendo DS. I have figured out how to make some of them in Keynote and that other program . But the one that I can’t figure out involves rotating text. Basically text is rotating in a circle. I can’t get an item of text to rotate in circle simple enough, but I can’t get a LINE of text to function this way (http://www.brainage.com/launch/howto.jsp# just pick world scramble when the pages opens).
So are there any ideas on how I can do this in Keynote? Or any other software for that matter. I am at my wits end with this stuff. Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the discussions, jamaicanson.
I THINK you should be able to do the rotating letters with Motion Paths, but you can't make it cycle. You'd have to just make it go a LOOONG time and hope you don't need it to go that long. Also, you wouldn't be able to choose letters and have them appear. You could make it happen automatically as a part of your builds, but not sure if that's what you were looking for.

Motion and Text, I am so frustrated

Hi, this is the second time, I'm trying to to a project in Motion and not in AFX. But yet again motion dissapoints me. The first time it was the outline bug, that cuts of the outline... really bad, but this time around it is the displaying/rendering of international characters...
The funny part is: the same font, works in TextEdit, Keynote, Pages, and FCP with Boris text... but motion, cuts of the right most part of the letter Å.

They are not in the purchased in iTunes anymore for some reason. But I can search it and re download it that way
Are you sure these aren't two different things and that you aren't repurchasing them rather than redowloading them at no charge.
Can you confirm which purchased list you are looking in, the purchased playlist in iTunes or the purchased list in the iTunes Store through Quicklinks in iTunes.

Database usage with Motion and/or Shake

Is it possible to create templates in motion that pull information from databases to fill drop zones? Since Shake uses c programming, can you merge a database with shake to create video content? For example, if you create a database and list in that database pics and text, can it be merged with Shake or Motion to create the video?

Motion doesn't have this kind of option at least at the moment.
Only thing that comes to my mind is that you can make database connections to Quartz Composer files and use those as generators in Motion through Noise Industries FxFactory Pro.
Of course if you're coder you can also edit Motion files (which are XML) with any text editor and change your drop zones by hand. Actually I think there was/is some program which allowed you to modify/render huge amount of Motion templates with information coming from different sources.
UPDATE: Okay now I remembered the product. It's Digital Heavens AutoMotion. No Idea how well it works but you can download trial from their site.

Workflow Qs: Using LT, Motion and FCP!

Hi, getting all jumbled up on workflow. I am inserting motion projects direct on the timeline, but I want livetype titling in this project as well - the titles are part of the motion animation. I don't see where i can save a livetype style I have set up there to just use in Motion, nor a sendto click. What do I have to do to make the composite? Thanks!

Import the LiveType project file as you would import it into FCP. However, my advice is to render the LT movie and bring the movie into the Motion project. You will save tons of processing and be able to edit your Motion project much faster. Try not to get hung up on precision with the LT stuff. In fact, I'd use proxies for the LT files with the simplest settings and minimum effects until you are much further along.
Most of LiveType's effects can be easily emulated within Motion.

The economics of effects are usually grossly misunderstood by cheapskates. The effort you will expend in faking this effect will cost you far more than simply buying it. Credit cards are not the issue, you can make this purchase in many ways, use your imagination.
Find a bold typeface that you like. Apply any noise filter to a matte as a still image to create an alpha mask that will give some chalkboard texture to the text by removing some of the pixels. The same noise matte can be offset slightly and blended using ADD to give you some bright chalk highlights. You create the eraser effect using the paint function in Motion or buy using a grayscale and a procedural or gradient wipe. There is an eraser object in the Content of Motion. Animating the onscreen movement of the eraser and the eraser matte is challenging but a fun exercise in learning Motion's advanced functions. A chalkboard is a dangerously primitive anachronism. Be sure the metaphor is appropriate to your communication goal and not just some silly effect your creative manager insists on using.

Help animating clips and text

How would I go about animating clips and text the way they appear to move in the above video (made using Motion) in After Effects? What effect would I apply to the clips and text to be able to alter their perspective/angle like that?

You'd just make the video layers into 3D layers and animate them and move the camera around them.
The text can be animated using per-character 3D animation.
Since you're new to After Effects, I strongly recommend that you start here to learn After Effects.

Acquire encoder position with Motion and DAQ

Hi,
I am trying to acquire an encoder position with Motion. It seems impossible to set the frequency of the acquisition with Motion and I must poll for the position in a do-while loop.
I have read in a lot of threads that one can use RTSI lines to retrieve encoder position with a DAQ Board though it is acquired with a Motion board. But there are no examples at all about this.
To sum up, I need to send Encoder Phase A to RTSI0, Encoder PhaseB to RTSI1 (which I already do), retrieve info with a DAQ device and then calculate rpm.

I'm not sure I understood well what you need. You have the angular position and you need to know the timing, am I right? Can you use an other counter on your card to get the period (or the frequency) of your signal? From that, I think you should be able to calculate the velocity.

Motion Tween Text

Hello -
I am trying to motion tween text and it is not working. It looks jerky. I am trying to create a "rubberband" effect on some text and two tutorials I found online used the Motion Tween. I right click and select Motion Tween and I see the blue shading but when testing it looks like there is no tween and looks jerky.
Any ideas on what I am doing wrong? I am using Flash CS5.5

Broadcast/SD Titles and Text: Workflow

I'm curious what, when doing Broadcast Titles and Text, is your workflow.
Do you exclusively make slates in Illustrator etc.? Do they look significantly better and function better for Broadcast product than making same in LIveType or Motion. Is there a big quality advantage in Vector based Titles/Text
Do you make any of your Titles/Text in LiveType or Motion.
Is there another workflow for high quality Titles/Text you would recommend?

I've used both LiveType and Motion for titling some very large QuickTime files (1440 x 900 @ 25fps) and the quality is perfect. As high a quality as you could ask for.
I can understand the rationale for saying that Illustrator would give better results that PhotoShop (vector vs. raster), but if you're working with the native LiveType file in FCP you're still in a vector environment (at least I think so - anyone care to comment?).
It's the same argument for using vector-based files rather than pixel based ones for DTP applications that are going to be printed by a commercial printer: The printer's RIP rasterises the file just once at the correct imaging resolution.
To my mind, a vector is a vector: I can't see how Illustrator can give you 'better' vectors than LiveType or Motion - if you're using FCP to 'RIP' either of the original files to pixels, that is. Perhaps using a 3rd party rendering engine would give you better quality, in the same way that different PostScript RIPs give better quality than others.
Maybe that's the reason why some people use Illustrator - as the non-FCP RIP can't handle native LiveType/Motion files?

Hi all im quite new to after effects and need to make a 20 second HD clip with a moving image background and text thats flies in. I also need to create a basic cross image. If anyone could suggest the best way to go about doing this it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance

what I want to acheive is a HD motion graphic of text which will almost spin onto the screen letter my letter and then a become static word. Behind this I would like to place a moving image clip.
By 'basic cross image' what im looking to do is use a cruifix shape instead of a 't' on the text.

I'm creating a lower third in Motion and importing into FCP X, but the alpha channel is gone when I import into FCP. What am I doing wring?

if you're exporting video animation out of Motion and you need transparency, then you need to make sure that the codec used is ProRes 4444. There are no other options. From the Share > Export dialog, the default Export option is usually "Same as Source." In Motion, that *should* be PR4x4. You can double check that setting by clicking the summary button and reading the last line.
You also need to make sure under the Render section that Color + Alpha is selected (that should also be the default setting.)
However, most of all, you're really wasting your time going about it this way. If you started a Title project in Motion, all you have to do is Save and give the project a Name; pick a category or create a new one. In FCPX, in the Titles browser, look for the category you used and find the project name and drag it onto the storyline.
You have the option of picking parameters in your motion project that you can "publish" to FCPX (things like the lower third background color, text color, positioning, etc... almost every parameter is publishable to FCPX allowing you to customize the project *inside* FCPX.) Any parameter you publish in Motion will be in the Title Inspector in FCPX. You do not have to "bake" your lower third in Motion before using it in FCPX. You can pretty much turn your project into an FCPX plugin.
If you didn't start a Title project, you can still build your lower third as an FCPX Generator. Go to the File menu and Publish Template... In the dialog box, make sure you check Publish As Final Cut Generator. Give the project a Name and select a category (you'll need to wait a few seconds until the Categories update to the FCPX categories...) You can create a custom category if you like and save the project. In FCPX, instead of the Titles browser, look for your template/plugin in the Generators > WhateverCategory > YourLowerThird.

NEED HELP! Poor quality stills and text

I'm finishing up a corporate video with lots of still pictures and text. Unfortunately, It's so bad I can't show it to the customer. As always, the video footage looks great but the still photos and the text looks very, very bad when played on a DVD. I compressed the MOV file with Compressor using the Apple-Best Quality DVD settings. I'm beginning to think stills and text will always look bad on TV. Is there a way to improve this? Is Compressor the best tool to compress my file?

Getting still images to look good at DV resolution and color depth can be a struggle.
A couple of tips.
1.Do not use images with more pixels than you absolutely need. If you are in the US (NTSC) and the images don't have any pan/zoom moves, size them to 720x480 (DV pixel ratio) in Photoshop before importing them into FCP. FCP is not a very elegant scaler.
2. Make sure the contrast in the images is under control. Keep the whites below 90.
3. It the images have a lot of high contract detail (think leaves in bright sunlight), sometimes a slight vertical gaussian blur of .3-.5 pixels can help.
4. If the total running time of the material is under 60 minutes, use a Constant Bit Rate of 6.5 or so in the Compressor settings.
If all of these don't really do it for you, and if the material is all stills, you might try to do the slide show in Fotomagico or Motion then output it as a video file for import into FCP.

I'm looking for a tutorial or any document that will teach me how to improve graphics and text quality in Motion. Quality is extremely poor. With same settings, graphics and text quality in FCP is far better. Why?

The quality problems when using Motion titles in FCP usually result from a discrepancy in the Field Dominance/Field Order settings between the FCP timeline and the Motion project.
