Motion Compressor 1.2.1, MPEG2 not 720x480?

Hello,
I have made a short piece in Motion and the project properties has it at 720x480, which is what I want. I 'export using compressor' and choose any number of the MPEG2 presets (which show the output size as 720x480), or if I make my own presets (which the summary shows the size as 720x480) the resulting M2V file is 640x480?! No matter what I do it seems to output my MPEG2 as 640x480 when all the elements leading up to the final file are set at my (desired) 720x480. What am I doing wrong?

What you see is normal. QuickTime just resizes the resultant MPEG to correct for the differences in the pixel aspect ratios between your computer display and TV. The output movie (MPEG2) is really still 720 x 480 but QuickTime resizes it for display purposes only.

I looked in the forum but ditn't get an answer that solved this problem including reboot program change preferences ect...
I would grateful for a solution to this problem as I am new to dvdsp4 and my clients are waiting. Thank you for taking time to read this.

This issue comes up all the time
The meter is not always 100% accurate and the sizes being reported change depending on how you look at them - when you are looking at the size of the files, how are you doing that In Finder->Get Info? Which number the smaller or larger if doing it that way? The sizes can be reported different ways, take a look at the link above. Also try deleting the PAR/MPEG files and closing and reopening.
What size is the folder when it is built to the hard drive? Keep in mind there is some overhead from making a DVD
Also 2 hours 6 minutes (missed that in the original post, sorry) is very close to the edge on being able to fit on a DVD-5 with the rates you have - an average of 4.6 should fit in theory, but it is never an exact science

Compressor 1.2.1 will not start

I have FCP HD 4.5 Studio. I have created several projects using almost all the modules (except Cinema Tools) and everything has worked fine...until yesterday. Compressor 1.2.1 will not start and I don't know how else to get my finished video from FCP to DVD SP. I tried to export it as a standalone QT movie and let DVD SP do the work, but it says the bitrate is too high.
Any suggestions?

I downloaded the update from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/compressorupdate.html (there are 2 updates that can be downloaded...just select the one you're using). I just ran the updater and it seemed to fix everything.

Motion - Compressor - DVDSP4

Hello everyone,
Hopefully someone here can give me a bit of advice with my situation.
I am making a 45 minute video with 2 animations. One animation is the intro and the second is the outro, with the "video.mov" in the middle.
As in the past I have always brought my animation into FCP and had to deal with the less than great results. (Even after tweaking FCP's project settings)
So, I came up with the idea of doing it backwards. I brought the video into Motion, and assembled it there. Now when I export it looks amazing! I am using the animation codec. The only downfall is that it exports as roughly 70 gigs.
I need to put this on a dvd, dvd or dvd-dl. Let me rephrase that. I need two copys one that will play in a dvd player, and the second should be just a raw format, like mov or something.
I am trying to figure out the best way (preset/settings) to compress both of of these. I have only tried the first copy (playable in a dvd player).
I used the "DVD: best quality 90 minutes" preset, and have come up with less that happy results. This files comes out as a .m2v and .ac3, that is fine but the total size is just under 2 Gb; I have "8" gigs on a dvd-dl. Is there a way to make the quality better.
The way I understand compressor to work is size vs quality. I have lots of free space, how to do I make my video look better?
Now; as for the second part of the question (the raw format). This can be put on its own dvd-dl, what preset should I use to optimize the the best quality?

The problem you'll have with increasing the bit rate too far when encoding a DVD is that some, maybe even most won't be able to play the resulting DVD. There is a little wriggle room with bit rates when encoding to MPEG2, but the size of the DVD is more related to the length of the movie. You can't just crank it up and expect it to play.
Animation codec is not the codec I'd use to export video. Since you didn't explain how you brought Motion animations into FCP, nor how you "tweaked" settings, I can't tell if you've just been doing something wrong or not. There are many places along the chain that can affect quality. However, there are a few things you can do to make things as good as possible:
Export your Motion project in the same codec as your video. It will need to be in that codec to export from FCP anyway, so you can either export it from Motion that way, or render in FCP, but I prefer Motion export.
If you bring the .motn project into FCP, make sure that your sequence settings are set to BEST for Motion Projects and Templates. CMD+0 to get to your sequence settings, then select the render control tab and change the Quality drop down to BEST, and check the setting that says, "Always use best Quality when rendering movies."
As far as your QT goes. Since you only have about 4gb of space on your DVD to fit the file (I'm not sure you can break up a single file onto two layers), I would export a really high quality H.264. Duplicate one of the H.264 presets and change the bit rate to something like 5,000. If the resulting file is only 1GB or so, crank the bit rate up more and re-encode.

Motion Compressor settings

hi! I have a little problem with my compressor settings. I want to output several projects from motion to compressor, with png settings, motion blur, field rendering etc etc. But when I open compressor, I can only find the settings for final cut pro when I select the png format. I cant find field rendering, motion blur and these motion 4 specifik settings. Can anyobdy help me out here? Thanks alot!

Not having used Compressor directly with Motion before, I'm not familiar with the settings you're referring to.
However, are you able to export a quicktime out of Motion without using Compressor? That should create a file with the settings you want already applied. Then take that file to Compressor to do whatever batch encoding you need.

Final Cut Pro 7, Compressor, or Quicktime X do not recognize MobileMe

I'm having issues uploading my movies from Final Cut Pro, Compressor, or Quicktime X to MobileMe. For both FCP and QT X, when I "Share" using MobileMe, it says that either my Username or Password is wrong. I know for a fact it's not because I can use them to login here or on iTunes. It worked before, but now after I did a Pro Application software update, it doesn't let me. I'm not certain that's the direct problem, though. When I try with Compressor, it just tells me it failed uploading.
I tried using both "username" and "[email protected]"
If I use "[email protected]" it says there is some sharing error which I never heard about.
How can I fix this problem, or is anyone else also experiencing this bug?
BTW, every thing else works fine.

Have you tried the full login including "@me.com or @mac.com"? This seems to work as far as FCP or compressor "recognizing" the MobileMe account. Yet when I do it through compressor, even though it says the job is done and all is well it never actually uploads it to MobileMe. It seems to work fine through FCP though.

I updated compressor and now it will not open!

When the automatic Updates available came up this morning I updated.
Compressor was one of them and now it will not open. Compressor opens for a second and then goes away. Is there any way to UNDO UPDATES??
PLEASE HELP I have to make DVDs from my FCP 5 and now cannot.

1) Compressor artifacts and 2) Processes not responding

The whole reason I switched from Windows/Premier to Mac/Final Cut was to avoid broken software. I'm beginning to think the Mac is no better. Well, that's not entirely true. I think OS X is more stable than any version of windows but DVD Studio Pro 4.0.2 is a step back in stability at least for me. Before upgrading to Tiger and FCS, I could reliably build and burn DVDs. Now I can no longer pry a complete working DVD out of DVDSP4.
I've got so many problems and so many questions I don't know if I should post them all in one message. I guess I'll keep them in one message but try to keep it short.

BACKGROUND

Each time I complete four episodes I create a DVD with these four episodes on it for the cast. This DVD I'm working on is for episodes 92 through 95 and I'm adding chapter marks and scene indexes to the DVD. By using the DVDSP templates and the correct drop zones, this has been quite easy, except for the fact that I can't seem to get the video to import any more.
Actually I got three of my four episodes to import just fine. These were exported from FCP as stand-alone QT movies and included chapter marks. Episode 94 would never finish the background compression step when importing into the DVDSP project as an asset.
Because of the suggestions I read in other articles in this discussion group about this kind of problem, I deleted the episode 94 audio and video assets from the project along with all menus which referenced them. I then started Compressor and transcoded the Episode 94 stand-alone QT movie and got these two files as a result:
"SOL-094-DVD PCM Audio-.aiff"
"SOL-094-MPEG-2 60 min Fast Encode-.m2v"
Next I imported these assets into the DVDSP project and used them to build the menus. This went smoothly. But, when I run the DVD simulation in DVDSP, episode 94 shows serious artifacts which render it unwatchable.
QUESTIONS: What Compressor encoding settings should I be using? What is the meaning of "60 min" and "120 min" in the encode settings? If I use a "120 min" setting will the file be bigger or smaller?
As I set here after reading the similar problems people have posted and the solutions and work-arounds people have suggested I see that a number of processes are not responding, according to the activity monitor. Generally this means that something is broken, but what. After rebooting OS X, running Compressor and then DVDSP I see the following processes that are not responding:
- compressor
- coreaudiod
- DSPX_AEncoderServer
- DSPX_EncoderServer
- two copies of MediaServer
When I exit DVDSP all but the top two disappear. What is "not responding" a symptom of?
I could sure use some help here. Thanks.

It seems this problem started after updating QuickTime Player 7.0.2
when I open the Simulator in DVD 3.0.2 I can see (in Activity Monitor) 2 processes coming up : DSPX_AEncoderServer and DSPX_Encoder.
Instantly they turn red and get (Hung) added.

Compressor 4.1.3 will not share computers

I have a batch file setup in compressor 4.1.3, and I have enabled sharing of another computer on my network, but I can't select it. It allowed me to create a group with both computers, but in the drop down Process on: it has my group grayed out? Why would it gray this out?
Here is a picture of my compressor screen, Home is the group that I created.

Sorted it out on my end....due to a lapse in concentration on my part, I was sending straight from FCPX to Compressor for h264 file generation. This is not supported.
BY going first to Master File, which generates an uncompressed mov file, which is automatically then loaded into Compressor, sharing is working fine. Wether or not true, Apple support did mention that FCPX-> Compressor via h264 sharing has never been supported across multiple machines. Didn't want to role back my OSs' to test that.
The massive benefit of going to Master File first I cannot overstate. I'm pumping out finished h264 videos in a fraction of the time I use to when I shared straight out to an m4v file. I'm talking a factor of 10 speed increase In my workflow.

Motion: Text Tab on the Inspector not working ... need some help!

I am having trouble getting the text inspector to display its properties in Motion.
I installed Final Cut 3 Twice.
When I go to Motion, i select the text icon.
I then type some text, then press the escape key.
Then I click on the inspector tab. From the four tabs listed, i then select the Text tab.
However nothing comes up and is blank.
I am not sure what is causing the issue. Any help to overcome this issue would be a big help.

yeah i resolved duplicates, removed the ms fonts set as well as the ms fonts folder from my /libray/fonts
however that alone didn't solve the prob - reinstalling motion and updating did so I don't know if it necessary to do the above before installing again or if installing will be enough.
on a side note- it's always good practice to stop ms office from installing its fonts because of such conflicts. Also, since fcpro software seems to be the most temperamental in apple's stable, I suggest that anyone dependent on this software for money keeps their main production rig free from any other sw if poss.

Slow Motion Compressor

I'm starting out just trying to get a 50% speed setting to work, so I selected Frame Rate of 59.94
Any Ideas?

NI-Motion PXI Card Device Status = Is Not Responding

I am unable to communicate with my NI PXI-7358 motion controller card. The general tab in MAX for the card shows that "Device Status" = "Is Not Responding" see attached. I have un-mapped and re-mapped the remote device. I have also removed and re-seated the PXI card without any success.

This seems to be a known issue. There is an internal knowledgebase documenting this problem and a potential solution.
The solution according to the KB article:
"This problem can occur when a previous board was mapped to the host machine. The NIMtnSvr.exe is based on Board ID's and sometimes gets stuck. To fix this, close any NI software running and then open the task manager and end the NIMtnSvr.exe process. This will shutdown the server and allow it to start from scratch the next time it runs. When you open MAX, the boards will appear on the local host correctly mapped."

Compressor 4.1.1 does not launch under OS X 10.9.3

Bought it few weeks ago, worked perfectly... Updated to new update 10.9.3 and now I can't launch at all Compressor.
What is the problem? Apple?
Need a new update for Compressor 4.1.1? or I need to reinstall? how do I do that?

Purchased Motion backgrounds to use in FCE - not working correctly!

Perhaps someone can help me. I ordered some motion backgrounds from actionbacks.com and have been trying to use them in FCE. These backgrounds are meant to loop seamlessly when they are stacked side by side...
When i drag one into the timeline, copy it and put the copied one next to it they are seamless and look very nice. But as soon as I add a video to the timeline above the background and render it, i am getting a black flash that happens inbetween the two looped backgrounds. Tech support for the product says it sounds like a Final Cut Express issue. Any insight anyone?

Hello Tom - Sorry for the very long delay in getting back to you on this. My Aunt passed away and I haven't been back to my computer for some time... I just launched this problem again and found where we left off. (Hopefully you don't mind re-examining this issue with me after so long).
To answer your last question, yes, when I exported a quicktime self-contained movie of the loops stacked side by side, i still get the black flicker. I see it when i watch it in QT and also when I re-import it into FCE. I even see it before I ever add a video clip to V2!
Yes, I can put the loops side by side on the timeline and play them and I don't see the black flash. It seems that I only see the flicker when I render (after placing the video on V2) OR when I export the loop as a QT movie.
Any more thoughts on this? Actionbacks is a very reputable company... I know this problem must be on my end, otherwise they wouldn't stay in business!
