Motion freezes machine solid!

I'm working on a series of longer-than-ideal web videos (from 1 minute to 14 minutes) which are 560 x 208. But at random points - especially about half an hour into exporting, the machine locks up - no mouse movement, nothing! I have to hold the button to restart.
The videos are green-screen presenter over photos and moving text. Because it's a non-standard size it was hard to build these projects in FCP (no preview at all). I'm using dvMatte Blast for the keying, static images in the background (optimized more or less to the correct pixel dimensions for the project), and a light bit of text animation.
The crash log show nothing. Any ideas?

My suspicion is memory - you might run /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor to check on your memory usage.
Motion 1.0 was very bad with this. My workaround at the time was to put the project into FCP and render sections of it (mark in/mark out/select section/render selection) and save after each render. That way if I crashed, I didn't have to start from scratch...

Why i believe the ram purchase is the issue, you say?
Well you see this ram model is not on the supported list on the motherboard information page to msi. allthough the 256mb model is.
so i had to manually configure the DRAM timing so that my computer would run at fsb 166 and ram at 400mhz.
But lets get back on track. Everytime i copy over the network (large files that use top network speed) the machine either freezes or i might get away with a complete network connetcion loss. so i have tried to copy at different speeds and foudn out that 2 mbyte a sec is possible without the computer hanging.
i contacted http://www.broadcom.com support base and they did not know of any simmilar issues regarding the broadcom 57x integrated network hardware. But they did say that my ram might be the issue because the network card sends its DMA packets there.
    and i quote:
"Response from Broadcom: I am afraid this is not a known issue to me.  But if you are saying with the different RAM this problem was not seen, this point directly to the RAM you use on this system and the compatibility issue.  The RAM could for sure cause this type of the problem since the network adapter DMAs packets into and from the system memory (RAM)."
So can anyone help me? i really want to be able to use my network hardware normally and not being forced to sell my current ram chip and buy a new one.
I can't remember all dram timings options but here are those i do remember.
    CL = 2.5 (yes didn't work with 2)

What are your temps? Freezing often happens when CPU usage makes it too hot. I believe there is a way to check CPU usage in XP...

What do you mean? its the ram chip thats the cause for the network freeze (or at least that's where it all is pointing at).

If your data isn't backed up, and you don't have another Mac, you may have to save up and splurge to save your data first with data recovery program and an external hard drive:

    Before doing any more troubleshooting.
If you want to do something that has minimal risk to your data, but still can be more risky than using a data recovery tool directly, if the hard drive is marginal, see this tip on repairing directories:

  • Motion causes machine to freeze

I just got my MBP back from service, and it still malfunctions in Motion under certain conditions: When I add a specific text behavior (Sci-Fi Glow) to a text layer with a specific font (Zapfino), the beach ball of death appears about 2 seconds into the preview. Changes in Resolution, bitdepth, memory usage permissions, updates (even pro apps update), external FW scratch discs, reloading Motion, reloading OSX, and creating a new admin user account have had no affect in resolving this issue. Before the service, a restart after system freeze would bring up the grey startup screen with a row of notches along the bottom (instead of the spinning bezel) and the machine would not start up. After the service, at least so far, it manages to start back up.
I had the squeel, moo, and heat issues before the service. They replaced the HD, MLB, Thermal Sensors, and Cooling Fan components. It still hisses, but less than before. It seems to be an issue that gets worse over time.
I was wondering if anyone else has this Freezing issue with Motion when using Sci-Fi Glow on Zapfino fonts. In my case, even if its the only thing in the project, even if the text is just one letter, the machine still freezes and the beach ball of death appears. Is anyone else having this problem with this or any other machine?

    Blixt,
I feel your pain, I lost a good deal of money because of this problem as well.
I had three 1.83 Ghz logic boards put into my MBP. I kept asking for a replacement, but the Customer Relations specialist wouldn't do it for me. So here's what I ended up doing:
After my computer was in the shop for three weeks, I called customer service and requested transfer to customer relations. The CR rep would only say that it wouldn't be much longer and I couldn't have a replacement at this time. Then, I hung up and called again, got to a different customer relations specialist and my request was refused again. I left messages if I couldn't get through. My calls were dropped twice. After three CR reps and two messages I had given up. Then, my call was returned by a CR rep willing to help me; bless his heart! A replacement was shipped the same day and my 2.0 Gz core duo MBP runs cooler, and has lasted longer than any previous repair. Motion works fine too, although I'm a little afraid to try the specific conditions which caused it to crash on me in the first place because I can't afford to be without this computer right now.
If you have a 1.83 Ghz logic board in your MBP, get a replacement because all of those boards are defective... It seems to have something to do with the video card interface based on the fact that the MB's with the 1.83 Ghz boards are fine and they have built in video. (An electrical engineer's best guess)
As a side note: Apple accidentally sent me both a replacement 2.0 Ghz and my repaired 1.83Ghz. I did a side-by-side test to determine that indeed the 2.0 do run cooler. Also, there was a glitch in the ambient light-sensor of the 1.83 ( it didn't turn on/off the keyboard back-lighting reliably when room lights were turned on/off) where the 2.0 performed perfectly. Given a choice of which one I could send back, I opted to return the 1.83.
Good luck Blixt, I hope you find this discussion helpful!

  • Final cut to Motion Freezes

I'm trying to send a clip to Motion, but every time I try to send something, I get the color wheel, and Final Cut freezes. The clip is only 6 seconds long, and Final cut used to send things without a problem. Anybody have any advice?

Would be helpful to know what format your clip is (remember that formats like H.264, Mpeg4 etc are delivery not editing formats) and if you have tried things like [trashing preferences|http://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm] or creating a new project and import the clip in the newly created project.
If you need to keep going as an alternative you may export your 6 seconds as QT movie (not conversion) self-contained, which will not affect quality and import that in Motion.

  • Why are my movies from Motion freezing and skipping after exporting them?

So I just got motion and was playing around with some slow motion stuff, they never play smoothly when I am trying to watch them in motion, actually no video in motion plays smoothly weither it has slow motion or not.  Anyway, I would finish one clip, export it, then try to watch it with quicktime and it would skip and freeze in quicktime to.  I thought it might be a problem with quicktime so I restarted my computer and the same thing happened.  I tried watching a video that wasn't from motion and it played fine.  I tried playing a clip from motion again and it did the same thing, so I tried watching it in iTunes, and iTunes did the same thing.  I tried watching it with Picasa, Picasa did the same thing.  I have no idea why it is doing it but it is very anoying when I can't see how my own video turned out.  Anyway any help would be appreciatied!  Thanks!

what codec are you exporting from motion? if its a huge old codec like 8-bit or 10 bit uncompressed then your computer may not be able to handel the playback. have you tried exporting doem small version to see your work?

  • Freezing machine on first day

I just bought a MacBook Pro and then spent an hour or so doing all the updates and setting it up. Then my machine froze up. I was unable to restart and had to hold down the power button to get it to start again. I've had the machine for 48 hours and am worried maybe I this machine may have problems. Should I live with it or go back to the Apple store to try to exchange the actual machine?

I had similar issues with my brand new MBP. I took it to the Apple store where purchased because I was pretty ticked off. You see, I am a PC convert. I thought for sure that if I went to Macs I would be free of freezes (or so the commercial says) The apple man at the store was ok. He suggested to turn time machine off and just back-up manually. He said this software has given him lots of issues in the past. Well I did that. So far, after just a few hours of testing it seems to work properly. I am not convinced that is the total issue. My MBP has frozen up many times in the last week since purchase. But since I don't know much about Macs I will have to take his word for it...for now.

  • X58 Pro freezes machine

I recently bought an X58 Pro mb on newegg, along with a i7 920 CPU, Corsair 3x2gb kit (recommended for this mb from Corsair's website), and a Sapphire Radeon 4870 HD (1gb model). After putting everything together, it booted up fine and installed Windows just fine. However, the entire system seems to freeze randomly anywhere from 5min to 3 days after it's turned on. By freezing, I mean that the mouse/keyboard freezes and even the clock; the only way around it is to hard boot. I'm not seeing anything in event viewer other than the last restart was unexpected. Other weird things that have happened although not as frequently: machine freezes and the image on the screen gets distorted, system reboots on its own.
Here is what I've tried so far:
    1. Called up Corsair to see what they recommend as far as settings. They told me that all I needed to do was Load Fail-safe Defaults, and then make sure that XMP was enabled (keep everything as default/auto). That fixed the issue for about 2 days, until it froze again.
    2. Ran Microsoft Memory Diagnostics and it's showing that all RAM is good. The tests took about 3 hours to complete and the machine never froze/locked up during that time.
    3. Contacted MSI and they suggested to replace the power supply. I had a 550watt PS and replaced it with a 585watt PS that I knew was good (SLI supported). Still had instability issues.
My next step is to RMA the mb and video card with Newegg, but thought I'd post this to see if there is anything else I can try before doing that.

    Quote
Corsair said that setting the Failsafe Defaults and setting XMP to enabled should work.
As I said before, XMP Settings (DDR3-1600/CL8) are overclocking settings, not default settings.  Corsair does not (actually cannot) reallly guarantee that these settings are stable.  To point that out, I quoted the standard note that Corsair has put into the datasheet for your modules.
The native settings (industry standard settings) for your modules are DDR3-1333 @9-9-9-24 @1.5 +/- 0.075V.  I already provided you with a link to the datasheet which lists these parameters. That is why I suggested to use these.  Have you tried these settings yet?
    Quote
It seems like the BIOS settings for their RAM is a trade secret and heavily guarded
Not really.  They are in the datasheet.
If the DDR3-1333 settings do not change anything, reduce the memory clock speed to DDR3-1066.  That is the maximum clock speed the memory controller of your processor natively supports (according to Intel Specifications).
Please keep Spread Spectrum disabled at all times.
    Quote
Does anyone know what settings in the BIOS I have to set so the RAM runs at 1.5v?
The JEDEC Standard SPD Settings for your memory modules are in the Corsair Datasheet. I have already pointed them out twice.
    Quote
Also I've noticed that the IOH temperature has been running around 60 - 70 degrees C.
The maximum allowable temperature for the IOH is around 100°C (according to Intel Specs).  As long as the temperature stays below that value, there should be no functional issues.  To double check:  Point an extra fan to the IOH heatsink to provide additional cooling and see if that changes anything.
    One more thing:
What is your current BIOS Version?

  • UI freezes machine still works

Ever since the 10.4.7 update my iMac has suffered from a very annoying problem where the display freezes. I am running a dual display (20" Dell 1680x1050) which may be partially to blame as it seems to happen more often when I am working on the second display.
The GUI is frozen and the clock doesn't advance but the cursor is able to move on the screen. I can ssh into the machine and the machine is fully responsive. If an application is running it continues to run. I simply no longer have a GUI to control the computer.
I have reinstalled the OS and when in 10.4.4 the computer did not freeze once over the course of a couple of days. Since I require the developer tools and the version of software I use requires an updated machine I had to go back to 10.4.7 and the problem returned.
I regain control by ssh into the machine and rebooting it from there. The machine restarts and until the next GUI freeze everything else seems to work fine.
If anyone else has noticed this problem and has an idea what the solution is let me know.
    Thanks

    Hi Biker1234,
Is your external display rotated, or in landscape mode? If you are experiencing the same problem I am (UI freezes when external monitor is rotated to portait: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=564084&tstart=0), then you can safely upgrade to 10.4.6. The bug appears to have been introduced in 10.4.7.

  • CP4 Freezes Machine when recording screens

    Hi - I'm using CP4 on a new machine which is 64 Bit Win7 with Office 2010.
Previously I ran CP4 on 32 Bit Win XP with Office 2007 without any problems.
However, since I have upgraded I am experiencing problems when recording.  This seems to be worse when recording Office 2010 screens or when any Office 2010 programs (like Outlook) are running.
When I'm lucky the recording just stops working - the print screen key doesn't work, the end key doesn't work but I can still click the CP icon in the system tray to return to Captivate.
When I'm unlucky my entire computer freezes and no keys work, even Ctl + Alt + Delete and I have to force a shutdown.
I've had a look in the event viewer and this seems to be the problem:
    Event ID: 80
    Source: Sidebyside
Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 4\AdobeCaptivate.exe".Error in manifest or policy file "" on line . Unfortunately I don't really understand what this means or how I can solve it.
Just posting this in hopes that it means something to someone.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
    Best,
    Aimee

I'm just including the information here in hopes that it will help other users working with CP4 and Win 7 or considering this option.
I have had major issues with this and was back and forth with Adobe Support for three months.
In the end they produced this:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/827/cpsid_82758.html
(notice it only mentions 64 bit)
But at the beginning of the process they said that Adobe Captivate was compatible with Win7.  Several technicians I spoke to also told me it was and in my case notes the technician indicated that this was new information to him so I think I was an early case of the problems which can arise.
It does seem from my experience that the issue with Win7 is more severe with 64 bit.  My colleagues are working with 32 bit and while they experience some strange quirks (can't open cp files via the recent items etc) they are able to record using Win7 and CP4.  I will be getting a new 32 bit Win 7 image to see if this rectifies the problem.  Perhaps the 64 bit image also explains the issues I had with the CP5 trial.
So for what it's worth anyone considering upgrading or experiencing problems I'd advise against the 64 bit version of Win7 together with Adobe eLearning Suite.  I hope this message will perhaps save you from the trials I've experienced in the last four months trying to work this out.
All the best and happy captivating!

  • Motion freezes, Mac freezes too

making a pixelated face effect (duplicate clip, apply mask, add pix filter, hit record and follow the movement with mask), Motion keeps freezing after 2 minutes or so of effect (prog is 1hr long!), Mac freezes too except mouse movement. Cure - unplug, reboot > problem recurs.
Clip is self-contained QT from FCP, on internal RAID drive. Tried permissions repair, reboot etc, also logging in as new user - same deal. Anyone else got this trouble?

If you figure 1 MB per frame times 30 frames per second times 60 seconds per minute times 60 minutes, my calculator comes to: 108,000 megabytes or 108 gigabytes - your 8 GB ram doesn't quite cut it.
    You might try this tip:
    http://proapptips.com/tips/article.php?story=20050312040230626
and since 5.1.2 of FCP gives you access to Motion filters, rather than blurring, you could probably use the pixelate filter...

  • Motion freezing a lot

Somehow I manage to make motion (and my entire computer) completely freeze quite a lot. This often seems to happen as a result of a lot of changing of settings. It never used to be this flakey. Any suggestions anyone please?

the first link mentions Patrick's post.. and I quote..
"There are ways to improve Motion's interactive performance.
    1) If you're using Ram Preview, clear it periodically.
    2) Keep your render quality at Draft or Good until the very end.
    3) Text is especially draining of resources in Motion 3. Turn off layers you've finished with to improve performance while you work in other areas.
    4) Definitely turn off Timeline and Layer thumbnails.
    5) Don't have any layer selected when playing - the thumbnail for the Inspector Tab has to be generated when you stop."
Also, do you have any illustrator files in your comp? or any wma files in your browser? Have you tried trashing your preference file and restoring permissions? Is your drive close to full? and so on....
