Motion is messing up my colors!

When I export a clip to motion from final cut pro to add graphics to it the clip comes back with less contrast, lighter and heavier in reds after rendering.
What's up with that!?

What exactly is your workflow? Are you "sending" clip to Motion and then rendering in FCP or are you exporting out of Motion and importing into FCP? What specifically are you doing in Motion?
There's no way anyone can help you if your question is vague.

  • Photoshop CC messes up text colors, layer effects and whole layers?!

    Hello
I was just working on several documents when something strange happend - out of nothing the appearance of fonts, layers, backgrounds etc changed. white color turned black. some layers had total different colors ( bitmap layers, no shape layers) - everything looked really messed up. I thought its some display bug in photoshop cc so I saved my document and restartet everything - fun thing -> it did save with these alterations.
Whatever happend, I have the problem in 2 documents, i can't reproduce it - one was a pretty big psd file - the other one was a fairly new one. thank to timemachine i was able to recover my file but as of now I'm kind of scared what happend - did anyone encounter this bug? Can i somehow provide more info on that topic?
Retina Macbook Pro 15, OSX 10.8.4 and newest photoshop CC via teamcloud.
    Thanks

You may have hit CMD I and inverted the colors. Move your cursor over the image and see review the values in the info palette.
If they are reading correctly to what you see on the screen your image is altered and posisbly doing an invert again would restore you.
If the colors are reading opposite, then you have some sort of display issue.

  • IPhoto is totally messing up the color of photos!

    the issue:
    - I import from my camera to iPhoto
    - drag photo to the desktop
    - open and edit photo in Photoshop (and save it)
    - drag the new version into iPhoto
While in Photoshop it looks fine and it also looks fine when I upload it to the web, but when I add it to iPhoto the color is all crazy... specifically the reds are exploding out of control!
    Any fix for this?

    Joseph,
Colors on computer is a NASTY complicated subject. Please don't balk at people for not wanting tread. That said: There are 3 preferences that are affecting the colors you see on screen (and in print outs). (iPhoto, Photoshop, System Prefs)
    1. First check your settings within iPhoto
    Go to Preferences> Advanced
you will probably see the checkbox enabled for 'Add ColorSync profile'
(i assume this embeds whatever profile is chosen within System Preferences>Displays>Color)
You probably want to leave this as is if you've been satisfied with your screen appearance and printouts.
    NEXT the Nasty part:
Launch photoshop: You need to mess with "Color Settings" within Photoshop to avoid this color conversion.
(the command is under Photoshop>Color Settings...)
ASSUMING here your camera or iPhoto has already embedded a color profile…
    Within Photoshop>Color Settings:
Under Color Management Policies be sure it's set to
    'Preserve Embedded Profiles'
You may also wish check all the boxes that say "Ask when opening" this will alert you to missing or different profiles.
    ASIDE:
By default all Adobe programs are set to mess with color (TRULY annoying)AND very hard to correct. Even opening the same image in Adobe programs color is inconsistent - at least as of CS 1.
So, Unfortunately, you may need to test a few times, with different settings to see which works best.
Try now opening/resaving a COPY of one of your iPhoto images. View it in iPhoto. If this works, your good to go.
If that doesn't do the trick:
You may also want to enable the Advanced Mode and change the engine to "Apple Color Sync" and intent to "Perceptual"
ALTERNATELY: you can choose the "Color Management Off" profile from the the Settings pop-up. (unfortunately despite the title, Pshop still won't really leave color alone)
    SIDEBAR:
You should try all this copies of your originals (Duplicate first within iPhoto)
until you find a setting within Pshop that works.
The bad news, I've never found a way to set things so that it doesn't mess with color at all. Maybe someone else here can pipe in.
Good luck, if you have any joy, you should repost here to tell us what worked for you.

  • Motion to FCP round trip color shift

I've been searching all over the web and have found many posts in various forums about the gamma shift that occurs when Motion projects are imported into FCP and then exported out as an MOV (ProRes or H.264), but have yet to find a suitable solution. All of Apple's documentation seems to indicate that using Motion with FCP should be as easy as importing a Motion project to the timeline. Does anyone know how to prevent the gamma shift that ultimately makes Motion elements in the exported MOV appear washed out?
I know that I can enable FCS color matching in QuickTime to adjust the appearance of the MOV, but I'm sending this file to clients that don't use Final Cut and won't have this option; especially those on PC.

Same problem. No grade or LUT. Mac Pro Quad, BM Intensity Pro, JVC DT-V20L1UA.
My test involved NTSC color bars. I exported 10 sec bars out of FCP to a QT, reimported them and cut them back into my sequence. At that point, the imported bars were identical to the fcp bars I'd started with.
After I'd SENT sequence to Color, the bars changed, mostly in lighter in contrast & brightness plus a little hue shift.
After the scene was rendered in Color and round-tripped to FCP, the new "look" came back to fcp
Could it be in the conversion of FCP YUV to Color RGB

  • Can motion 5 fix bad video color/quality?

Hi, I have learned just about all I think I can from imovie and want to start using our own family videos to create movies.  I've found that our digital video I am starting with (from 2009) is not in good quality.  I am thinking of purchasing motion 5 because I want to do more than imovie allows, however I can't seem to find anything that staes if motion 5 can fix grainy / off color video.
Can someone answer this for me please.
    Thanks so much!

How good are you at Photoshop "tricks"?
Cloning media and overlaying filter effects can optically improve a fair amount... but there is a limit to how far you can push it.
Motion contains Gaussian blur and Highpass filters (blurs to smooth graininess, highpass for sharpening edges.) There are also plenty of color correction filters, and Hue Saturation can correct color-shift. Use Blend Modes to mix the effects into the original.
Here's a list of Motion's "color correction" filters:
[image shows extra categories not available in the default install of Motion]
    And the available blend modes:
Many of these are the same as you would find in Photoshop (and other image editing applications.)
You have to know how to build the "repair layers" you'd need. There are no quick drop'n'fix type effects available, but if you know how, you can do a lot in the way of your own repair work. Research some photoshop tutorials on the subject.

  • Illustrator messes up my colors using PMS overprint

Have started designing a poster with the use of PMS Warm Red C in Overprint mode.
I always start designing with PMS colors, even though the printing will  be basic 4-color printing with no spots, because I've always run into  issues with printer proofs and having to back-reference CMYK to PMS is a  real pain in the **!
So now my problem is that I have this large text in Warm Red on top of  an colored illustration and part of the text is overprinting onto the  illustration and looks real nice and dark when doing so. It deepens up  the tone of the Warm Red, which I find a little too much on the orange  side to begin with, and turns it into a real nice and deep red...
Problem is, when I convert that PMS color into CMYK, the color shifts into a super pale orange! Oveprint Preview mode is on.
    Any ideas why?

You need to understand how overprint works. You don’t overprint objects. You don’t overprint colours. you overprint inks. If you have a spot colour above a process colour mix and the spot colour overprints, the result will be all process colours plus the spot ink. If you have a process colour mix overprint above another process colour mix, any ink in the topmost object prints with that value. Only inks not in the topmost object will show through.
On the left, the overprint area contains all process inks in the bottom shape plus the spot colour of the top shape. On the right illustration I converted the spot to a process colour. This means the overlap area will contain all the process colour values in the top object plus all other process colours of the bottom object. This means the magenta value drops from 100% to 75%.
This is why it is important to always define your swatches as they will print. If you are printing without spot colours, make sure there are no spot colour swatches in your file.

  • Tell me if you think this looks like SIN CITY!

I made this in After effects, but the colors didnt look good at all, so I brought it into motion to play around with, and with various blend modes, I made this look like the SIN CITY.
I multiplied the clip, with the one on the bottom having a glow, blur and a light rays filter, then the cllip in the top had its opacity dropped to let some of the bottom clip shine through.
Let me know what you think! This was a test for a short that I want to make...
    here is the link:

no CG, I dont know any 3d programs but im trying to learn lightwave. i used after affects, and took pictures of the sides of buildings, then assembled them into blocks. Then i duplicated those and comped them into another comp, and made a row of about 7 buildings. then using the z, y, a x scales, i made the buildings different sizes. then i duplicated the row about 5 times and made the city type thing, animated the camera and there you go. then i brought the rendered clip into motion to mess with the color and make it look sin city'ish.
Im still messing with it to try and cut down on the pixel zipper jaggy edges. ANy ideas patrick on how to make the lines sharper? Thanks.

  • Color differences between FCP and Motion

Forgive me if I'm breaking any unwritten rules here as I posted this same topic on the Final Cut forum the other day..so bear with me as I hope to find some insight here from the many experienced (and extremely helpful) Motion users on the motion forum.
OK...here's my dilemma. I create a graphic/text page in Motion working with the RGB colors from a style guide provided by an agency. I then drop the motion project into the FCP timeline and the colors between the 2 applications are different.
I'm attaching a link to 2 jpegs that show the different RGB readings with the DigitalColorMeter application.
    http://www.myphotos.yahoo.com/s/218qifk6fseemvbmprlw
In my Motion project the meter tells me that the dark blue color is RGB-11,44,99
In my FCP timeline the meter tells me that the dark blue color is RGB-4,30,79
I gather from some forum research that this may have something to do with gamma levels...my FCP setting has the Imported/StillRGB Video Gamma setting set at Source.
I'm hoping that someone can explain to me why the DigitalColorMeter readings would be different between Motion and FCP...and what I might do to feel confident that my Motion files would import correctly into my FCP timeline.
Thanks in advance to any insight....
    Jay

After some more exploration...turning things on and off, changing sequence/gamma setting, and the like...I now realize what the issue is.
When the background setting in my canvas/edit window is set to black the colors are accurate between motion and FCP.
Once I change the background setting in the canvas/edit window to white or checkerboard there is definitely a shift in color/gamma. Not sure why that is...maybe someone can explain

  • Messed up colors in Games like Starcraft and Assasins Creed 2

I have downloaded OSX Lion and Now my graphics card Messes up the colors in the games! How do I fix this?

Same problem here.  This seems to be a widespread problem caused by Lion, at least with respect to new MacBooks. Here is a thread in Blizzard's forums that describe the problem with respect to StarCraft II, including a lot of details relating to the problem:  http://us.battle.net/sc2/en/forum/topic/2878767976?page=1
From that forum, it sounds like it is in fact an Apple problem and Apple is apparently aware of it.  It's very frustrating - I bought the Lion upgrade hoping that it would fix the graphic problems I have been having since purchasing my Macbook Pro (i.e., hard freezes while using the dedicated graphics card for graphic intensive uses like StarCraft II).  Now not only do I still get hard freezes uses the dedicated graphics, the colors are all screwed up using integrated graphics!  Hopefully this will get fixed soon.

  • Color discrepancy with imported PSD between Motion and FCP

I've got a Motion project with an imported PSD file as a background element (the PSD was created in Photoshop CS2 for Windows, running under Parallels).
The PSD file consists of two overlapping curved shapes, one blue, one green (part of our corporate look). The colors (RGB) match our official guidelines.
I imported the Motion project to FCP and placed it on the timeline, on V1. In FCP, I then used a color generator to create a small blue rectangle which would serve as a border for a slightly smaller thumbnail image that would get overlaid later on. The rectangle is on V2. I used the exact same RGB values for it as I did in Photoshop for the curved shape.
Trouble is, the blue color in the shape that got imported into FCP inside the Motion project doesn't match the generated color.
    See this screenshot, in FCP:
    http://elamaton.no-ip.com/~jarkko/colordiscrepancymotion.png
Three blues: leftmost, the color generator resized to a small rectangle; on the center, the shape that I created in Photoshop and imported into a Motion project, dropped into FCP; rightmost, an instance of Photoshop CS2 running in a virtual WinXP in Parallels Desktop. You'll notice that the blues of the generator and Photoshop match, but the middle shape that travelled the CS2->Motion->FCP route is a different shade.
Narrowing it down further, I decided to import the PSD file directly into FCP (just to see if it'd match - it needs to go through Motion for the final product). Here's a screengrab of Canvas this time:
    http://elamaton.no-ip.com/~jarkko/colordiscrepancy_motion2.png
Again, from left to right: the generated rectangle, the directly imported PSD, the PSD in the imported Motion project. The first two match, but something in Motion or the Photoshop->Motion route screws up the colors of the blue-green shape (as well as the Työterveyslaitos logo on the top left, also a PSD, in the same Motion project). The blue shade is also incorrect in the Motion canvas, pre-import to FCP.
What's going on here, and how can I fix things?
The project settings are PAL DV in both FCP and Motion. No rendering has been done, I'm importing the .motn into FCP as-is.
Any help is greatly appreciated, deadlines loom...

First, double-check that your PSD is in RGB, but I suspect it it or it wouldn't even work in FCP. I suspect a gamma issue moving between the apps:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93794
You might try setting the colorspace in FCP to RGB or adding a gamma filter in Motion to adjust.

  • How do I stop ICal randomly changing my colors?

So recently (like, a few days recent), my Ical on all of my devices is messing with my colors. I have multiple calendars, for work, class, etc, and now whe I open up ICal on my devices, no matter which one (I have 4) the colors will switch, even when I switch them back. For example, my work cal is green, but when I open the app it will turn purple, and I will edit it back to green, click apply, and it will IMMEDIATELY go back to purple. Well, I figured I would just adjust my other calendars to fit this switch, but now they all do that.
I am running iOS7 on my ipad, ipad mini, iphone 5, and still have mountain lion on my macbook pro.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.
I already restarted all devices and quit the app multiple times... nothing is working and it is messing with my organization.
    Thanks so much!

I was having the same problem and spent some time on the phone with apple today.(new computer is under apple care). Tried a ton of stuff with different folks and ultimately I (well, me and 3 apple specialists) was able to solve this issue.
    Here's the break down:
    1. Quit Mail, Calendar and Messages.
    2. Open: System Preference -> Mail, Contacts & Calendars
    3. Delete all your google accounts (using the little minus button below your account list)
    4. Restart your computer.
    5. Re-add your google accounts. (Obviously, keep the calendar box checked).
    6. Open calendar and wait for your google info to populate.
    7. Attempt to add an event with correct time zone.
    IMPORTANT NOTE:
Events I created while I was having the problem still had the problem.
I simply deleted those broken events and recreated them with refreshed settings.
I've only had this working for a few hours so I'm not certain it will stay working forever.
But for now it is a relief.
I realize deleting and re-adding the accounts is annoying but it's a lot less frustrating than seeing UTC every time you add an event.
Hope that helps everyone else having this problem.

  • Multiply filter in illustrator with a 2 color job-pdf and print issues?

    Hi,
Encountering a tricky problem and not sure if its an InDesign fix or an Illustrator fix.
I am working on a 2 color job—pms color + black on a book cover. The cover needs to seperate into these 2 colors.
Also, I need to make a high res and lowres pdf that look like the cover to send out to marketing, sales etc.
    WHAT's THE PROBLEM?...
Well, I am creating a collage with black ink vector graphics on top of the pms background. I created this art in illustrator CS3. it is saved as an .eps file. The illos were done by someone who used a white fill to knock out black areas. There is also a wide 50% grey outline around the illustration.
I like the idea of the line of the illo being black and the fill being red so that it looks seethrough on the red background. But the 50% grey outline causes a problem...I'd like the 50% outline to blend with the red color, so instead of appearing like there is white in the ink it overprints.
The only way I could think of (and quickest way) was to apply the multiply filter in illustrator to the vector illo. This seemed to work great.
I brought the illo into InDesign CS3 where I created my cover layout.
Looks great, Prints great. Separations appear to be good, although it shows the yellow, cyan, and majenta layer they appear to be blank, so I think it will seperate nicely into 2 plates–PMS + black.
BUT, when I make a pdf, using "smallest file size" or using "high quality print", the pdf it makes does not show the illustrations in the collage. They are kind of beige and dulled out. The publisher needs pdfs too.
Does this at all indicate that this job will not print correctly using this multiply filter, or is it all well and good final product wise, but its just an issue making the pdf? I am slightly nervous I am going to send this off to the printer and they will have some issue.
I am a professional designer of 10 years with lots of print experience, but I have never used multiply in illustrator so I just want to make sure there is no rule against doing this I should know about. Does multiply at all mess with the color separations or is it fine? And how do I get my pdf to come out right? I'm hoping there's some dumb thing I'm forgetting, or a simple fix.
Thanks for any insight you may have!
    L.

If you don't feel comfortable using Multiply you might want to communicate with the printer and ask if this is an issue for them to reproduce correctly. Some printers using older rips may have issues with transparency. If you can't speak directly with your printer you could mark up the file or make a PDF to accompany the working file with your comments about what prints at what percentage, and if it should overprint or knockout. Years ago I would get a file with transparency in it and have to make sure the designers intent was clear. This was in some cases due to the designer not understanding blend modes or what he/she wanted overprinting or knocking out in the printed piece. The other way you can confirm the separations are going to rip correctly is to print a PDF out of Indesign and open it in Acrobat pro. Under Advanced>Print Production>Output Preview you can turn on and off separations for the 2 spot colors in question. Because PDF acts as your rip in this case you should be seeing what separations your printer will be printing using your native Indesign file. Some print shops will require you to provide a PDF or a color laser print out for QA of your printed piece when sending files to prepress.
    Hope this is helpful.

I did figure out after posting this that I was using one .ai file and one .eps file—the .ai was showing up fine in the pdf and the eps was showing up screwy.
odd thing though, when I just re-exported using pdf/x–1a settings, now both images appear muddy! but fine when I turn "overprint preview" on. I just don't want my publisher to have to tell everybody to turn overprint preview on...they shouldn't have to do that for editors etc, non design people.
maybe the new "smallest file size" will be fine though since this is a press preset...we'll see.

  • My colors are off in one Photoshop, but not another.

I'm illustrating a book and working at both home and the office. At work, my Photoshop CS5 shows the correct colours, but when I export the file in any way, or open it up on my home version of Photoshop CS6, the colours show up much redder and vibrant!
The left are the colours that they are supposed to be, and the right is what I see at home and whenever I try to export the left.
I think it must be some preset in my CS5, since I've gotten the picture on the right both times. I've tried messing with the color management, but I can't figure it out. Could someone please help me? I can't continue on my book knowing the colors are wrong.

First, just to rule it out, make sure you have the same color settings. The really important thing is to have Color Management Policies set to "preserve embedded profiles". With this setting, the embedded document profile (whatever it is) will be correctly handled and displayed on both systems.
But I'm more inclined to think you have a broken display profile on your work machine, especially if only Photoshop seems affected. Photoshop is likely the only application that actually uses the display profile.
All this assuming you don't have a wide gamut monitor, which changes the playing field a bit.
Anyway. To test the display profile, set sRGB IEC 61966-2.1 as display profile in Control Panel > Color Manangement > Devices (Adobe RGB if wide gamut monitor). Relaunch Photoshop so that it can pick up the new profile at startup.
Do this on both machines. If they now display more or less the same, that's definitive confirmation. The real fix is to make a new profile with a calibrator, but if you don't have one, just use sRGB until you do.
