Motion on G4-best VGA card ??

I use a MacBook Pro for editing native HDV and my Dual 867 G4 will get a processor upgrade soon to make it a Dual 1.25 running 10.4.9 and 2gigs of RAM. I know PCIe and PCIx are the new specifications for VGA cards, but what PCI card is still out there that works well with Motion ?

There is NO PCI card that will work with Motion - AGP? Yes. Search is your friend:

I use an ATI x800 flashed over from a PC version myself in my MDD G4.

  • Best graphics card for Motion 4???

I'd like to upgrade to the best graphics card possible for Motion 4.
I have a Mac Pro desktop 2 x2.8 Ghz Quad-core Intel Xeon with 4GB of RAM and an Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT (512MB RAM) but I find that Motion is very slow at rendering and playback. I am working with many layers in my Motion timeline (dozens), but what can I do to increase Motion's speed?
I've heard of the ATI Radeon 4870 and much more expensive NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800. Has anyone used these graphics cards with Motion?
What is the best graphics card on the market right now for Motion 4?
Would it help if I doubled my RAM from 4GB to 8GB of RAM? Or does FCP7 and Motion 4 not use more than 4GB of RAM?
    Thanks very much in advance,
    - Nick

Hi Marc and Patrick, thanks for both your feedback.
Sorry Marc, I didn't mean to imply that I didn't believe you. I was just confused at to why a card that had 1.5GB of memory would not be better than one with 512MB. But I'll take your word that the 4870 is the way to go.
Regarding the ATI Radeon 4870. I went to Apple's web site in the store section but it looks like they're just selling the single DVI option of that card. BH Photo Video is selling it with Dual DVI option.
So I'm confused, should I be getting:
Diamond Viper ATI Radeon HD4870 (dual DVI) ($309.50 at BH Photo Video )
    or
ATI Radeon HD 4870 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac ($349.00 Apple Store)
Which card or version of the card are you referring to exactly?
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Best grapchics card for Motion?

I have a PowerMac G5 2 Ghz with 2Gb of RAM and the NVIDIA GeForce 6600 256 SDRAM.
The computer kind of 'struggles' when I am using Motion and the graphics get pretty choppy. With a $300-400 maximum budget what would be the best graphics card to purchase?
    thanks!

Hey, Patrick! Good to hear from you.
Well, I've been busy with illustration assignments--finally got all the art for a kid's book out of here--and I spent a week recently down in Florida visiting my wife's 92-year old mother (lots of Early Bird Specials!). Then, I had to do some art for two animation projects that I've created with others doing the actual animation (one in cut-out, the other in 3D using Maya). But I am FINALLY about to get back to the animation project I'm assembling using Motion. So, I'm sure I'll be back here to pick the great Motion Master's brains.
Please say hi to Matt for me. I'd love to know what you are up to on his "feature". It's gotta be something superb.

We've been waiting for a Macintosh version of the 5870 for more than a year. Get the 4870, learn the application, buy a new card if you can make money with it.
Waiting for the next iteration of Mac-compatible graphics cards is a waste of time if you need to get to work.

  • CPU initialization hang on bootup- works w/o VGA card!?

After moving my system across country I have encountered a problem.  When I boot up my K7N2-L with 2200 and MSI GF4 4200, the system hangs on "processor initialization," as indicated by the D-bracket LED display.  Removing *just the VGA card remedies this problem and the system moves to boot up properly.
What could be the cause of this problem?  The only way I can see the VGA card affecting the CPU is by insufficient power or a short in the system.  Would this be a mobo problem, a CPU problem, a PSU problem or a VGA problem?  the system had worked fine months before I moved it.
    Any help is appreciated.

    All the Best...  :D !!!
I have reseated my processor- overheating is not the cause.  It has worked fine before.  I have cleared the CMOS, so BIOS settings are not the cause.  It is not low PSU power either (unless something is wrong with my PSU).  This system has been running fine for months until I moved it.  Thanks for your suggestions though...

  • Please help - Motion trial checker says motion cannot ..  graphics card...

Motion trial checker says motion cannot be installed graphics card... I have 2 graphics cards: both NVIDIA Geforce 7300 GT in my Macpro 3Ghz... I am using only 1 card with a vga monitor. It says my graphics card does not meet the minimum requirement for motion. but it does. I tried it with a different monitor but I get the same error please help

    Welcome to the discussions!
Motion compatibility checker...well, that's an old app!! You're probably looking at the wrong place-at the Motion for PowerPC pages. There used to be a trial for Motion version 1 and/or 2 but both will not work in an Intel processor Mac. The Universal binary version ( 2.1 and later ) has been integrated into Final Cut Studio and there's no trial or checker for Motion since then.
    For specs-that you definitely meet-look here: http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/specs.html

  • Reinstall osx server 10.3 on an xserve G5 without vga card.

Reinstall osx server 10.3 on an xserve G5 without vga card. How can i software restore the server without a vga card?

"How can i software restore the server "
If you mean restore as in reloading an existing config from a disk image. If you have a bootable diskimage on an external drive of your xserve, and if you have another Mac you may be able to boot the xserve in targeted disk mode and just use disk utility on the second Mac to restore the image from the external drive to the internal drive of the xserve. Restore without erase works the best for this...sometimes you will get a copy error on the last file...not sure what the error really means...but it does not seem to be a real issue.

  • What's the Best LCD (20"/ larger) and best Graphic Card choice /G4 733DA?

I know very little about the great choices for flat panel displays and also graphics cards on a Mac G4 733DA
So any recommendations would be sincerely appreciated.
What's a good LCD (20"/ larger) and the best Graphic Card choice for a G4 733DA? A friend recommended an ATI 9800 Pro (Mac Edition) Is this a good choice?
My current G4 733 Digital Audio has a standard VGA port as well as an ADC port.
Will I need to upgrade the existing graphics card if I’m looking to view wide screen?
Here's what i currently have on my g4 for a graphics card:
    NVIDIA GeForce2 MX:
    Chipset Model: GeForce2 MX
    Type: Display
    Bus: AGP
    Slot: SLOT-1
    VRAM (Total): 32 MB
    Vendor: nVIDIA (0x10de)
    Device ID: 0x0110
    Revision ID: 0x00a1
    ROM Revision: 1045F
    Displays:
    VGA Display:
    Resolution: 1024 x 768 @ 75 Hz
    Depth: 32-bit Color
    Core Image: Not Supported
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Quartz Extreme: Supported
Lastly, is 1080p even possible on this mac system provided I perform the above upgrades to say an ATI 9800 Pro (Mac edition)? Or will this also require a major dual processor CPU upgrade?
    SDMacuser

The ATI Radeon 9800 Pro is the best card you can put in a G4 Power Mac. As for supporting HD, I believe its a mix between CPU and GPU, based on your system. The Radeon 9800 should support HD, and any HD supporting LCD. Price, wise, for a HD ready screen I'd say the a high quality Dell LCD would be good (it uses the same panel as the Apple 20" LCD) but costs less. You should not have to upgrade your CPU, although it would not hurt to look into it.

  • Installed New VGA Card and Lost Audio

(Please forgive my ignorance or stupidity when it comes to any computer knowledge.  In 'Layman's Terms', I am what you would call an idiot when it comes to computers, sorry...)
I just installed MSI VGA Card 'MD512D3', 512MB, DDR3 onto my HP Pavillion a1710n desktop computer that is running Windows 7 and after the installation, the first thing that I noticed was the fact that all of my computer's audio had disappeared.  I have been trying to trouble shoot the problem through various forums and I have tried pretty much every single solution that had been given to others with the same sort of problem.  But then it occurred to me, why don't I uninstall the new VGA card and run the computer without it like I had been doing before.  so I did the uninstallation and immediately, the audio drivers appeared in my Windows update and so now I have audio again on my computer.  But my question is this, the audio that I was using prior(and here is one of the times that you will need to forgive my ignorance), I believe they were analog.  The best way that I could describe them is that they had the connections to the computer that were color coordinated, i.e. "green" "pink" "blue", etc and I was primarily just using the "green" connection for basic stereo sound(nothing fancy).  I just happened to look at the box for the new VGA card and it specifies that it has HDMI Output which, if I am not mistaken, is a digital output that requires a completely different connection.  Can someone explain to me(in the most BASIC of terms), if this is, in fact, a digital output that requires a different set of speakers for audio or if I am able to use the 'analog' speakers that I currently have?  Now, keep in mind that I would LOVE to just go out and purchase the most expensive and up to date audio products but I am limited by my income...thanks in advance for any information that you are able to provide me...Dan

The card supports Audio via HDMI. If you connect it via HDMI to a screen with speakers or speakers connected to the screen which is connected via HMDI the Nvidia HD audio is used. If Scrren has no speakers Nvidia HD audio can't be used. It should then use the soundcard or onboard sound of your board which the spreakers are connected to.

  • Installation with an Elsa GLoria II VGA-card

    Hi,
I use my system for professional purposes (mainly CAD) and just wanted to test the Solaris environment.
While installing Solaris (if setup is switching to X-mode) I get an blank screen and the installer asks for the type of my VGA-adapter which is not listet in the options.
What can I do, I am just an bloody unix-newby?
    Marcy

Yes, you can use this VGA card as this mobo supports both 4x and 8x AGP VGA Cards. Please make sure that your card is running in 4x mode when used.
    All the Best... :D!!!

  • What's the best graphic card i can update my 1.8Ghz G5 to?

Any advice on the best graphic card i could update too (AGP x8 slot i think)? I've had a hard time finding out my available wattage on my power supply (not listed in About This Mac menu). The ATI Radeon X1900 looks good but i can't find any compatability sites for my Mac. I'm thinking around the $200-300 dollar range. I need something to help me get by while i save up for a new mac next year...I need to be able to run all the latest Final Cut & Motion apps. Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks.

Best graphic card for your model is the nVidia Geforce 6800 Ultra DDL which is plenty fast for Aperture and Motion and can support two 30" displays.
Second best option is the ATI X800 XT for Power Mac G5 and the 6800 Ultra GT model - both of these can drive only one 30" display.
Forget about the ATI 9600 XT and 9800 XT. I've upgraded from the ATI 9600 to the Geforce 6800 Ultra and I'm glad to have even found one on the market. My scrolling and viewing thru large photos don't lag and I don't have to wait for things to be rendered.
With the price point you are budgeting, I doubt you will find one on the market. I ordered from We Love Macs an ATI X800 two weeks ago and they led me to believe they had one in stock when I spoke to a person. Then when my order went thru I was told they only have it on order and cannot tell me exactly when. In fact I also have on order until now from JR.com another X800 for months already and all they do is just say my order is delayed.
I gave up and bought from eBay instead. The way these cards are even available for our extinct model, I doubt they will produce more.
The cards above are getting rare and unless they find a boatload hiding somewhere all along they will never go down in price. So if you keep holding off like I did, all I saw was prices going up.
eBay has one on sale right now for the Geforce 6800 Ultra DDL for USD400. With only one on sale, I don't think it will last long at that price. When that's gone, you can go the WeLoveMacs route for the same card which they are selling for USD799.95.

  • HT4664 What is the best graphics card for FCPX?

In the nonstop anti-FCPX propaganda is an article of interest — posted 7/9/12 — comparing the benchmarks of FCPX and PP6.
    http://www.streamingmedia.com/Producer/Articles/ReadArticle.aspx?ArticleID=83582 &PageNum=1
The system used was a 2 x 2.93 GHz Quad-Core Mac Pro from early 2009 running MacOS X version 10.7.4 with 12 GB of RAM and an NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800 graphics card with 1.5 GB of onboard RAM.
In most cases PP6 outperformed FCPX with this configuration. However, in the comments Ben Balser pointed out that FCP X's A/VFoundation engine wasn't ideal on the NVIDA card:
"Quadro is actually not the best card for FCP X's A/VFoundation engine, but great for CS6's Mercury engine, so the test is amazingly flawed right there. Try both on a 5780 card and watch things drastically change. I've done that test myself. Exporting to Compressor uses a MUCH more sophisticated encoding engine meant for higher level, professional transcoding, not simple outputs, which are faster using Export Media…"
Apple lists this card on its support page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
    So,
What is the best graphics card for FCPX?

    Ben,
Thanks for chiming in on that article. It would be good to have a benchmark comparison with the two systems each with a preferred card.
I'm hoping to see some other comparisons on this thread. Also, some links to other articles about best practices and configurations.

  • Best graphics card for G4 MDD and still have 3d acceleration in OS 9?

My MDD (June 2003) has the standard 9000 Pro in it. I read in another topic on here where someone said if 3D acceleration in OS 9 is required then upgrade options are extremely limited. Just wondered if anyone knows the last best AGP card I can stick in this MDD that'll still provide 3D acceleration in OS 9.2.2, or am I stuck with the 9000 Pro?

    Hi-
The Radeon 9700 Pro was the top card to ever be offered for the MDD.
The OEM version is very rare, and usually expensive.
The equivalent PC version 9700 Pro, flashed to Mac ROM, is readily available ob eBay.
The 9700 Pro is pretty close in performance to the 9800 Pro, supports Core Image in OS X, and is a good upgrade beyond the 9000 Pro.
However, the driver support in OS 9 is still limited:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/Graphics/Radeon9700PROOEM/index.html
The Geforce4 Ti is another performance option for the MDD. If you read the following article carefully, you may find that a graphics card won't help as much in OS 9 as you think:
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/Graphics/geforce4ti/geforce4_titaniumMac.html
    This article makes similar points:
    http://www.barefeats.com/graf31.html
Serious gaming, with help from a powerful graphics card is in the realm of OS X.
For OS 9, most cards don't really get utilized as much as one may think.
Look at this article to see the potential for gaming in the MDD and OS X:

  • Need recomendation - best WIFI card?

    Hey guys,
I have a question, I want to add my Power Mac to my network (wifi) at work. Currently it is the last one without wireless. But its kinda out of the way, which is the best wireless card? Should I just use the original Airport card that it takes or is there a different brand USB or PCI card for best reception? Dumb question, will a aftermarket make it work in " G " instead of " B "?
    thanks

Here's some various wireless devices from OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/search/wireless
The original Airport card would work but it has b speeds.
The USB devices would work, but your Mac has USB 1.1 speed, so again it would be slow.
The best option is a PCI card.
     Cheers, Tom
