Motion Project --- AVI File

What is best way to get a high quality AVI out of a Motion project? I have tried exporting a MOV then opening in QT to convert to AVI but the quality looks horrible. ANd if I select anything other than Cinepak compression (I tired DVCPRO50 and None in compression settings) it just gives me a white screen with some garbled lines occasionally. I really need an uncompressed (or as close to it) AVI. What do you all recommend?

I will Second Scot's solution. I do a lot of .avi output for sports jumbotrons (which require .avi) and I follow his workflow.
Export to ANIMATION
Opent in QT PRO
Eport as AVA no compression
If you do a lot of these (as I do with sports players) I export all my movies to Animation and then use MPEG Streamclip to batch all my movies to uncompressed .avi.

Do you get the warning "Media files are not optimized for FCP. Either recapture the media or use Media Manager to crate new copies of the files to improve performance for multi-stream playback."?
    What does this mean?
I can import and edit the files no problem either, except for that waring, which concerns me.
It means you will not be able to use the multiclip feature with these files because your Macintosh is working very hard to decode them on the fly. More than one stream will choke your machine.
Your AVIs are visible in FCP because you happen to have acquired an AVI file that uses a codec you have available on your machine.
AVI isn't even supported by Microsoft; it's been a totally concatenated delivery wrapper for more than a decade. It only survives because of entrenchment.
Use Get INfo on one of your AVI clips, figure out what codec was used, use Google to find out what you can about the codec, and decide how you want to proceed. You want to determine what your output is going to be and work backwards from that decision. For instance, if you're going to distribute a standard MPEG2 DVD, you want to edit using conventional DV. Transcode you AVI files to DV using Compressor.
Your easiest solution will be to edit on a PC that does handles the AVI natively or to contact whoever gae you the files and demand they provide you with clips you can edit on a Macintosh.

  • FCP opening anamorphic motion project files as 4:3

I have a 720x480 anamorphic motion template which I need to place in a 720x480 anamorphic FCP sequence. FCP is automatically distorting the template, when I open it in the viewer (prior to dropping it into the timeline). It looks 4:3.
When I drop it in the timeline, it is squished. The distort value is 33%. Anamorphic is unchecked in the browser. I know how to fix it once it's already in the sequence, but seeing as I have several hundred of these templates to use, I'd prefer to have FCP open it correctly.
It does the same thing with motion project files, not just the templates.
Anyone know a way to correct this in FCP?

Ok, but for my workflow, I need to use motion templates, not project files. There is no way to correct this in the browser for a template. I need it to just come in 16:9.
If I want SD footage in a 16:9 format (pillarboxed) what size do I make the sequence? Should it be some custom size that is not anamorphic, yet still much wider than tall?
I need to standardize all my sequences (whether they are 16:9 footage or not), so that I can use one set of motion templates, which will be 16:9. Should the motion templates then be created in this same custom size?

The above was a quote and AME is not necessary.  From the Timeline selected Ctrl-M brings up the Export window.  There select "AVI" and under Video Codec below select "None"

  • •TIP - Open Motion Project File In QT Pro

Not sure if everyone already knows this but you can open a motion project file in QT Pro.
For this one project I had to export QT files from Motion. It was taking forever and was playing around and discovered that if you open the motion file from QT player and did an export it was much faster.
The export from motion took 54 min...when using the QT method it took 5 min.
    Why?
Who cares, it was faster and looked great.
If you already know this trick..great, if you dont I suggest giving it a try if you need a faster solution.
    Cheers!

I've tried that. I think there might be a bug in QT Pro (PC) or for some reason my QT Pro can't handle an .ac3 file. I just upgraded QT Pro to 7.5.5 and now I get different behavior. Basically, I'm getting no audio at all even though I've chosen "Add to Movie" properly. I think the problem might be that QT Pro isn't able to recognize my .ac3 file. If I playback the .ac3 file in QT by itself, I don't hear anything at all. I don't have a 5.1 sound card in my computer, but shouldn't I at least be able to hear two channels? Do I need anything special installed (hardware or software codecs) to playback an .ac3 file with QT Pro?

  • Project settings for .AVI files containing SVHS footage?

What are the best Project Settings to use with (uncompressed) .AVI files containing SVHS camcorder footage in NTSC 4:3 format.
SVHS is not explicitly mentioned in the choices.  I would like to retain as much resolution as possible.
    Details:
Source = Magnavox Movie Maker Camcorder
Tape Format === SVHS (2 hours per tape)
    Video Standard = NTSC
    Aspect Ratio === 4:3
Converter ===== Tapes were converted to .AVI files using a Canopus ADVC300 (S-Video in to Firewire out) .
Compression == I believe the files are uncompressed.  2 hours of footage is about a 25 GigaByte file. 3.47 MegaBytes per second?
    Audio ======== Stereo
    As a guess, I would choose NTSC-DV-Standard 48Khz .
    Is this the best choice?
Will this setting preserve all the SVHS video resolution ?
         Thank you,
         Gerald

Your guess is correct. During the Canopus digitizing your SVHS input is converted to 720x480 NTSC. The digitizing produces a complete video input that PRE captures. Averages of around 13GB per hour are typical. So from the figures you have quoted your digitizer has done its job properly.
Digitizing tapes was the subject of a long topic discussion earlier this month - you might find it interesting: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5906986?tstart=0. While that discussion was relating to VHS tapes, SVHS still only produces around 400 usable horizontal lines, so the Canopus will have captured it all at 720x480.

  • Avi files showing as black

Hello, recently some avi files started showing as black in AE. The same is the case when rendering a project containing these files.
Even if I look at my old projects and such, some of the avi videos display as black there also, so what worked before doesn't now.
The specific avi format, that doesn't show properly, should be OpenDML Avi 2.0. All other video formats work as they always did.
I'm guessing that some file or codec got deleted, but outside of AE the files play without any problem.
Is there some way to resolve this? I've already tried reinstaling AE, resetting the preferences..
I'm using Windows 7 and CS6.. not sure what else is relevant.
I'll be grateful for any help.

Oh, alright, sorry. The codec is Motion JPEG.
I don't recall changing anything before this happened. I did probably install some games. Not sure if that would cause something this specific.
I've just tried uninstalling all third party codecs and nothing's changed. I've tried reinstalling them after that and nothing's changed again.
I don't know how to reinstall the Motion JPEG codec as mentioned by Rick Gerard, so I didn't do that part.

  • Converting avi files

Hi, I have been given the task of creating a film in imovie using clips of avi files shot on a creative vado (non HD).
I have quicktime pro version 7.6.4 (518.35). When I attempt to open the avi files to convert to work in imovie I get a message saying my version of quicktime does not contain the necessary components. Please can someone help and also let me know what is the best export/conversion settings??
    Regards
    Steve

Statement does mean files from QT to DV have audio but but following same route in streamclip the audio disappears. Streamclip app downloaded fresh from their site and tried current and new beta version with same poor results... Checked movie properties on AVI file and contains video xvid 1.0 and audio microsoft ADPCM file. When converted to DV in QT video changes to DV - PAL and audio to DV. When using stream clip video changes to DV - PAL and audio to DV but sound doesn't work??????
Very strange. Would normally have expected the reverse -- i.e., problems with some QT based applications but no problems in MPEG Streamclip as adaptive PCM is usually a "conversion" compatible but not always an "edit" compatible format for Apple applications. Would still like to run my own tests to see if I can duplicate your problem on my system(s) as the question of the source of the problem remains open at this time.
I'm using ilife 09 with imovie updated regularly. The reason I said it wasn't relevant was because the streamclip had no sound in QT so no need to try imovie.
Your reasoning is fine as far as it goes but using iMovie '09 opens the door for native editing in DV and AIC for higher video quality (as already mentioned), as well as, H.264 with unrestricted data rates, Motion JPEG and Photo JPEG for medium quality video compression to medium size files, and/or MPEG-4 and H.264 with restricted data rates for lower quality but much smaller editing files. It also restricts you from using the Animation codec which is otherwise one of my favorite intermediate compression formats (which, if Apple hasn't fixed the problem, imports to iMovie '08/'09 but only exports as a blank black screen). Basically this means you have more conversion options for editing natively in iMovie having different video data rates which, in turn, means you can balance the editing file size against preserved quality as may be needed for different iMovie projects.
Can i please ask the following. The file sizes vary hugely but the quality appears the same after conversions. The AVI file is 17mb, the DV conversion in QT is 242mb and the MOV file created in imovie for the project is 49mb???? I oask because of disk space?
File size is directly proportional to the total data rate (i.e., amount of data per unit of time). All this means is that the more data you have per second in a file, the larger that file will be for a given duration. DV typically has a total data rate of about 28.5, 57.0, or about 112-114 mbps depending on the specific video and audio codecs in use. (The codecs are sometimes referred to as DV25, DV50, or DV100.) DV 25 is usually seen as DV video with DV audio (i.e., DV/DV) files which, depending on which Apple application/utility is measuring the file size, may appear to be twice its actual size. (I.e., some applications count the audio and video DV separately and add them together when it shouldn't.) In any case, DV video is not highly compressed and so the files are relatively large. Since the art of compression is actually the art of "throwing out data," DV files tend to retain more of the visual data from the source file than when converting to other, highly compressed video formats. Unfortunately, these files have very strict standards regarding the encoding matrix the playback dimensions and some applications can, in certain instances, actually lose the anamorphic flag required for proper playback/handling which can cause serious problems for some users. This is one of the reasons I tend to prefer the AIC codec which was specifically developed as an intermediate codec for both anamorphic SD, as well as, HD content. (I.e., it is a more versatile codec in today's world of multi-dimensioned multimedia files.) The other, is that AIC has a typical video data rate about 20-25% smaller than DV video with about the same level of quality.
In any event, to get back to your original question, the DIVX 5 codec is a more efficient compressor having a much lower video data rate than DV video. (Simple compare the video data rates of each to see what I mean here.) When you convert the DivX encoded data to DV you are trading data rates/file size for the retention of as much of the original visual quality as you can. If your current project (e.g., a project targeted as a 320x240 posting to the internet) does not require the retention of maximum quality, then you have the option of trying a more efficient codec with a lower data rate which would, of course, produce a smaller file for editing in iMovie. For instance, I would normally expect an MJPEG/AIFF file combination to be about 40-50% the size of your DV editing file. You may wish to try an MJPEG/AIFF or MJPEG/AAC editing project to see if you can detect much loss in visual quality and then decide which format is best for your particular work flow.
Hope this helps to understand what is going on here.

  • AVI files wont encode

I'm working on a project that requires me to capture video from 3/4 inch analogue tape. Some of the project was shot on DV format and was in raw form. Here's my work flow.
I'm taking my 3/4" analogue tape and loop it through a dv deck (to make it digital) and into my apple G5 by firewire from the dv deck. I edit my piece out and and export it out as an AVI file. I adjust the AVI compression video setting to "none" and export it out to a server.
From this server our IT dept. takes it and encodes to the file type they want along with the settings for streaming. BUT some of the files they cannot encode.
It seems that the pieces that were edited from the raw DV tape were able to be encoded...and only SOME of the 3/4" pieces were able to be formated. Others give an error.
I'll post the error message here:
    \videos\ProfessionalTechnicalEd\HumanSvcs\MarieR\New\Terminology
Error: 0xC00D1B83 - One or more codecs required to open this content could not be found.
    C:\Program Files\Windows Media Components\Encoder>Pause
Press any key to continue . . .
Has anyone had this same issue and does anyone have a solution for getting these encoded from an AVI file.

I often need to make files in FCP that Windows Media Encoder can read for transcoding to WM#. My workflow from a dv sequence is:
    1) "Export Using Quicktime Conversion"
    2) Format: "AVI"
    3) "Options..."
    4) "Settings..."
    5) Compression type: "DV/DVC PRO - NTSC"
    6) Motion
    a) Frames per second either 29.97 or "Best"
    b) no "Key frame every" set (dv has no keyframes)
    c) no "Limit data rate to" set (dv has its inherent own data rate)
    7) Compressor
    a) Quality "Best"
    b) Scan Mode "Interlaced" (windows media encoder has its own de-interlacer)
    c) Aspect Ratio "4:3" (I let windows media encoder do the aspect ratio correction depending on the final use)
This work flow just repackages the dv file in fcp into a dv encoded AVI with no re-compression.
The "uncompressed" option you describe basically gets you no advantage, its just a huge file.
There also could be problems with the audio that is causing windows media encoder to choke.
As an aside windows media encoder does its own "color correction" so you need to color correct your original fcp sequence to a full range sequence otherwise windows media encoder will make it really flat.

  • Converting avi files for FCE

    Hi,
I have a ton of avi files that I need to convert for editing in FCE.
My goal: to get my avi clips into FCE so they don't have to be rendered in the timeline and everytime an edit is made. I've read several posts which suggests mpeg streamclip. My avi format is: Apple OpenDML JPEG, 640 x 480, Millions DVI ADPCM, Mono, 22.050 kHz FPS: 29.97, size: 640 x 480 pixels (this is the format listed when I open the clip in quicktime). My my final output of this FCE project is to view on HDTV (16:9) via dvd, so the best quality is what I would like.
    My questions:
Is streamclip what I should be using?
And what settings should I use in streamclip to convert the avi files? (my guess would be: quicktime movie for the format) I've been trying different options under quicktime movie and the conversion leads to a jerky choppy video.
    thank you!

I  should point out that  the project that will not load was created in Elements 5.0 and exported over to Premier Element 3.0 to create a playable DVD .. the file that will load was created in Premier Elements 3.0 (not sure if that is significant but more information is better then less) .. any thoughts / suggestions would be appreciated ..thanks

"The project could not be loaded, it may be damaged or contain outdated elements"
Unfortunately, the last part of that error says it all. Something is used, that no longer is in PE7, or has been changed significantly. Could be an Effect, a Transition (though those usually just disappear, and the file still Imports - PrPro gives a warning, and tells you which Transition is missing, and the TimeCode of where it was used), or something else.
If you have PE3, you can do two things:
1.) finish the edit there and Export to your delivery format
2.) Export a DV-AVI file and bring THAT into PE7
Neither is quite as good as being able to Import the .PREL and work on it in PE7, but those are about the only choices that I see. Now, if you have any clue as to what the Effect (whatever) is, that's causing the problem, you *might* be able to open a COPY of the .PREL in WordPad, search for that Effect, eliminate reference to it, and then Save as a .PREL. That might be a lot of work, and might well destroy that COPY of the file - that's why you work on a COPY.
    Good luck,
