Motivations to buy a Mac Powerbook

Dear all,
I am thinking to buy a Mac Powerbook. However, I need advice from Mac fans. What are good and bad points about using a Mac Power book? Thanks a lot!
SONY   Windows XP

Hey buddy...don't do it!!!!!! I have a MacBookpro
that I bought in March. I have had nothing but
trouble with it since I bought it. It is the most
disheartening purchase I have ever made. Every time I
call Apple support they cannot seem to remedy my
problem and inform me that I should go to an outside
discussion group and maybe find someone who has had
the same problem and was able to fix it. I think the
biggest shock I got was when one techy suggested I
download some windows software and that may help with
my problem. I have a buddy who has a Dell laptop and
it makes this MacBook Pro look like an abbacus and I
paid $1000 more for my laptop. Hope you have better
luck than I did!
With out a little more information, it's difficult for us to give any credibility to your comment. You don't indicate what problems you were having... It is uncommon for Apple support to basically say they can't help you and go check the forums. I would also be curious what Windows software they suggested that you download... and what it was supposed to fix. Also... Dell does not sell any notebooks with comparable specs to the MacBook Pro for $1000 less than the MacBook Pro... and they certainly don't sell ANYTHING that would make a MacBook Pro look like an "abacus".
The vast majority of people with MacBook Pros are very happy with them (including yours truly).

  • Mac Powerbook vs. PC laptop cable to LCD projector

My daughter has a Mac powerbook and will be showing a slideshow from her Mac for a wedding rehearsal dinner. We have borrowed an LCD projector to use. Are the cables the same for Mac lap as for PC lap to hook up to the LCD projector?  Thanks.

You bet! Just let me know!

  • Buying Opinion - Upgrade Powerbook vs MacBook Pro

I'm thinking I may try to upgrade my laptop as my main objective is to get CS4 right now but I have a friend who is selling his MacBook Pro for $900. What's your opinion as you would know better what Macs can handle? My main problem is speed especially with CS programs and I do need a new battery. I have a PowerPC G5 Dual with a large glossy screen for my most intense work that I can do from home. But I like to have a laptop that I can take on the road for working on projects. It's mostly for Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign. So no animation or gaming purposes.
    I have:
    Machine Name: PowerBook G4 17"
    Machine Model: PowerBook5,9
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (1.5)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 1.67 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 512 MB
    Bus Speed: 167 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.9.5f3
    His computer:
2.16 ghz Core 2 Duo Processor
    3 GB RAM (Newly upgraded)
320 GB 7200rpm HDD (Newly upgraded)
Dual Layer Superdrive (DVD and CD recorder)
    15.4" 1440x900 Widescreen Glossy Display
    128MB ATI x1600 Video
    DVI-VGA adapter Cable
    Apple Wireless Remote
    Brand new battery
It includes OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard, iLife 09, and iWork 09, all part of the "Mac Box Set," so this is all legal software.
The original box, discs and documentation are all included.
The condition of the system is excellent with one minor exception - there seems to be a very slight bend in the casing underneath the expresscard slot. One of my photos shows it.
Do you think it's doable with what I have (and what could I do?) or should I go with the newer MacBook and save myself the headache? What's the main difference with the computers?
    Thanks everyone!
    Tiffany

Re: Buying Opinion - Upgrade Powerbook vs MacBook Pro
You can get a brand new MacBook for $999 so don't bother with the used one. For the price difference, save up and buy new MacBook Pro for $1199. Faster than Macbook. Shop around. Everyone is discounting. You might get free ram upgrades (unless you're getting free ram, buy separately and install yourself), free shipping. Try Epercom, CDW and Small Dog in addition to Apple. If you go to Apple store don't be shy about asking for a 10% business discount. I asked and got one for my imac last summer.
He's offering it at $900...does that seem like a fair price for what I'd get?

  • Which Reader version for Mac Powerbook G4 10.5.8 PowerPC?

I received update notice for adobe reader  version 9.4.6. With Adobe's help I finally was able to download flash player 10.1.102.64 for my Mac Powerbook G4 version 10.5.8, Power PC processor (1GB mem). Is the 9.6.4 version compatible with my computer or will I have the same downloading problems I had trying to update to the latest version of Flash Player? Currently PDF documents won't open from email attachments or many websites, such as for online movie ticket purchases. I have to save them to my computer first, then open. Hoping a newer version of Reader will fix that problem. Which version should I have and how do I download?

  • What Photoshop for Mac Powerbook G4 (PPC) running OSX 10.4.11?

I want to colourize B&W Photo scans.
No interest in cloud, video or Flash. Based on looking at system reqs, I think I need Photoshop CS3 for PowerPC.
However, I am confused by the plethora of "product" choices and constant name changes.
What's the difference between Photoshop (PS) and Photoshop Elements (PE)??
I'd also like a copy of Lightroom.
The machine is a Mac PowerBook G4 15 Inch, running OS 10.4.11 (Tiger). I am limited to this OS version, as Apple is no longer providing updates for PPC machines.
A new machine is NOT an option.
Can anyone tell me which product is appropriate, and how to order the older version from Adobe? I find the web site navigation limited and less than helpful!

Photoshop Elements is a deliberately emasculated, bargain-basement priced application that borrows only a few Elements of Photoshop proper and adds some hand-holding features for beginners and amateurs, and an album-like Organizer.  Personally, I think it's overpriced by at least $50–$60, but from your description it may be all you need.
We do not deal with Elements, here.  There's a dedicated Elements forum:
    https://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop_elements/content
All of the current versions of Photoshop, Photoshop Elements and Lightroom require a Mac Pro with an Intel CPU to run.
Adobe does not sell anything but the current versions of those applications, which in the case of Photoshop boils down to Photoshop CS6, Photoshop CC and Photoshop CC2014.  Adobe does not sell any versions older than that, so you'd be limited to what you can get in the market, like dubious versions you can find on eBay, where the likelihood of your getting ripped off is huge.
Yes, this website is a an ungodly mess.
In a nutshell, you won't be buying anything that runs on your G4 from Adobe.
Remember, you are not addressing Adobe here in the user forums.  You are requesting help from volunteers users just like you who give their time free of charge. No one has any obligation to answer your questions.

  • Wait for Intel G5 or buy power mac pro intel now????

This is for video and multimedia processing and i know Qaud g5 is best on the market right now but i need somnething within a few months with fast processing power with intel because that will be the newest tech. that wont go out of date anytime soon. So what do I do Wait for power mac G5 Intel which i predict in year or just buy the mac book pro but scared it won't process as fast as i think it will. I just absolutly cant handle when using multiple layers and when I edit them waiting for the process time to make each of the changes. WHAT SHOULD I DO!!!!!!

You're not even comparing apples to apples here. The MBP is faster than the G4 Powerbooks, but it will in no way compete with a Quad G5! Not to mention, the MBP maxxes out at 2GB memory, which although good, is not nearly enough for serious mutimedia processing like you mentioned. If I didn't already have a D2.5, I'd buy a Quad now - why wait.

  • Why Should I Buy Another Mac Book Pro

I purchased a Mac Titanium Powerbook back in the day when it was so fresh and new, big bucks.  Within 2 years the logic board began freezing all the time.  It was fixed with big bucks again.  2 years later the laptop began doing the same thing, freezing up and so I went along with the extremely annoying issue.
When the Mac Book Pro came out I decided to start fresh with a new computer, with big bucks of course.  Guess what happened 2 years later as i lived in another town, took it to another Mac repair place.  They told me the Logic board was dead.  So after big bucks I replaced it, so rediculous.  And now, 2 years later it is freezing again, not only that, I can't connect to my wifi anywhere I want to in my own place with my own internet.  I have to walk to certain spots in my place so my Mac Book Pro will communicate with my router that always worked with the new Mac Book Pro since day 1.  But, after these updates Apple puts out to better the system, at some time it borked my internet connection.  Reading these boards and seeing similar problems with other Apple users and seeing there is no solution is decerning.  Then seeing a new security update from Apple about detecting virus popups and nothing addressing it's wifi issue is the last straw for me.
My wife bought a Toshiba 4 years ago and we put win7 on it when it came out since vista is disgusting.  There isn't one problem with her laptop, nothing.  And you can run still get on the internet with a laptop that runs win98.  I cant even load a page when I get on my Mac Titanium Powerbook, that has to be connected to the internet via ethernet cable becuase detecting wifi on that is something that never occured, even though it should.
I am on the fence, Mac vs PC?  Pricey vs Something that breaks less?
So why should I buy another Mac computer?

I don't think the experiences of a place where people discuss problems is necesarily an indicator of the overall populace using the product. Just as if you went to a hospital, you could not ascertain the relative overall health of everyone who is not in the hospital.
Statistically, you are probably an ideal candidate for a MBP, as it is extremely unlikely that you would have another problem of similar character. That is of course assuming that nothing you are doing is cutting short the life expectancy of your computers.
I am on my 4th MB variant, and have only had one major issue, which was handled terrifically by Apple. However, I am not entirely without worry that an electromechanical device nmade by humans can't fail. That is why I also have had AppleCare on everything.
But we differ in one great respect, I think. I figure that any computer i buy has a maximum life expectancy of 3 years. I have never used a computer longer than that, and I am routinely trading up within that time period. This time will be different though. I've only had my MBA for a little over 6 months, and It can't come any sooner that I'll move to the new one in about a month, if it nears my expectations.
Don't get me wrong, I respect the value you place on longevity. But I really think that unless your activities are especially harsh in a physical manner on your computers, then it is unlikely you will have the same experience once more. I do beleive that the current units are as good or better than anything Apple has had in their notbooks, in terms of quality.
But it is your decision,, that should be based on ALL facts and not just the experiences of those who visit a help forum.

  • Buying Titanium Apple PowerBook G4 (15.2", 800MHz, 40GB) on eBay for $170?

I have the chance to buy a usable PowerBook G4 on eBay for $170. I just started teaching (high school Science) and would like a inexpensive laptop that if damaged/stolen is not heartbreaking. At this price I figure it would be worth it, but just want a second opinion. I have 23hrs left to accept the second chance deal since I was highest bidder, but did not hit the reserve price.
Here are the specs on it as presented on eBay:

    Thanks!!!

Hi sp, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
It really depends on what you want to use it for. 10.5 is the highest OS you can put on it, and I would not recommend it. As has been stated, a 40GB HD is very small; figure $50-$60 to upgrade that if you do it yourself. More RAM would be good to max out at 1GB, which probably means buying 2 512 modules (there are probably 2 256MB modules in there now, and only 2 slots). VRAM also very low by today's standards, and cannot be upgraded. Processor very slow by today's standards. All that being said, it's still a usable computer depending on what you want to do with it. Basic word processing, email, spreadsheets, web surfing (not streaming video) should all be fine.
    Two things to check:
Make sure you get the original install discs, and the Tiger install disc.
Make sure the hinges are good. TiBooks are infamous for hinges failing.

  • Buying a Mac mini for music

I'm buying a Mac mini in September - so I will have Snow Leopard - to use with the latest version of Logic and the latest version of Pro Tools and use for my college work and recording my band. I plan on using an M-Audio MobilePre USB, external hard drive and multitrack firewire interface for recording. Will I be able to use all of these devices simultaneously by using some kind of firewire hub without any noticable latency or driver/hardware problems? If it will not be as plug and play can somebody offer some kind of assistance? I am getting the 120GB model with a 2GB memory upgrade so I can get the maximum graphics memory as well. Thanks in advance.

I cannot answer your other questions, but I believe that you can confirm this with Apple, you can go ahead and make your purchase now and get a free copy of Snow Leopard when it is available. Apple has always had a free upgrade program for those who made recent purchases just before the upgrade release date.

    * [/questions/777886]
Some gestures have been removed in Firefox 4.
You can restore the zoom feature by changing the values of the related prefs on the <b>about:config</b> page.
    browser.gesture.pinch.in -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReduce</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.in.shift -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReset</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.out -> <b>cmd_fullZoomEnlarge</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.out.shift -> <b>cmd_fullZoomReset</b>
    browser.gesture.pinch.latched -> <b>false</b>
To open the <i>about:config</i> page, type <b>about:config</b> in the location (address) bar and press the "<i>Enter</i>" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.<br />
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.<br />
You can use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a pref more easily.

  • I have installed Smile Box and can't get it to install, I am running a Mac Powerbook G4 10.5.8 1.33 GHz help?

I am running a Mac Powerbook G4 OSX 10.5.8 1.33 GHz  and can't get Smiebox to install, it downloads the program just fine but will not let me install it, can someone tell me why?

    Hi SusieQ,
Seems they have no idea what they're doing over there, to wit...
    Mac Snow Leopard and above*
In general, we recommend a multi-core processor and at least 2 GB RAM.
Connection to the Internet is required; Smilebox is optimized for a high-speed broadband connection, and that faster connection will give you the best performance.
Smilebox uses your Internet browser and Flash11 (or higher) to run. We automatically detect whether Flash is installed and will help you install the free download if need be. You will also need javascript enabled. Your internet browser and any security software (firewall, antivirus) you have on your computer may need to be configured to "allow" Smilebox internet access. Please refer our article on - I have security software (firewall or anti-virus software) that I suspect is blocking Smilebox.  What can I do to fix that?
If your computer shipped with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 you can install run Smilebox; we do require that Windows XP computers have Service Pack 3 installed.
To run Smilebox on your Mac, your Macintosh should have an Intel or Power PC processor on a G5 or higher (if your Mac was made in the past 3 years, it should meet this requirement), 2GB or more RAM.
*Smilebox will not run on earlier versions of the Mac OS X including Leopard (10.5).
Snow Leopard is 10.6.x, no G3/G4/G5 PPC Mac can run 10.6 or above.
So this line is wrong, or two other lines about Snow Leopard are wrong....
To run Smilebox on your Mac, your Macintosh should have an Intel or Power PC processor on a G5 or higher

i want to buy a mac mini

If you aren't doing any heavy duty photo editing
the base model should work just fine.  I would suggest
that if you go with the base model, bump the RAM
up to at least 4gig, but get it at Newegg or direct from
Crucial or Kingston, it will be way cheaper.
