Motorola Forum Tips about Droid X

It looks like Motorola is reading forum posts and is working on an update to fix some of our major issues.
There are also some interesting tips.
https://supportforums.motorola.com/message/190567#190567

About #4 at that Motorola link regarding Notification volume: does this also address the speakerphone volume? For instance, many people have trouble hearing the verbal Navigation directions while using Google Maps Navigator and VZ Navigator. Similarly, the voice prompts while using the voice commands app (or whatever it is called) are hard to hear if not impossible to understand - at least for many people.
So, many users who report a low volume ringer/notification problem also report a low speakerphone problem. Will increasing the notification volume automatically increase the speakerphone volume? If not, did Matt simply forget to mention the speakerphone or is Motorola indeed only increasing the volume of rings and notifications and not the functioning of the speakerphone?

  • Layers Magazine tips about After Effects

    Layers Magazine has just posted some tips about several applications in Creative Suite 4, including After Effects CS4.

    Without seeing the file and your settings, nobody can say anything about the matter. This could be as trivial as setting the sequence button in the import dialog to issues in the file itself like a smart object that uses a different color profile like the parent document, excessive nesting of groups, some weird belnding tricks with layer styles and whatnot....

  • Tip about backup command

    Hi all,
    I need a tip about backup command.
    Well, I have th e following script:
    replace script sunday_backup
            resync catalog;
            allocate channel c1 type disk;
            setlimit channel c1 kbytes 2097150 maxopenfiles 4;
            allocate channel c2 type disk;
            setlimit channel c2 kbytes 2097150 maxopenfiles 4;
            allocate channel c3 type disk;
            setlimit channel c3 kbytes 2097150 maxopenfiles 4;
            allocate channel c4 type disk;
            setlimit channel c4 kbytes 2097150 maxopenfiles 4;
            set maxcorrupt for datafile 1,2,3,4,5,6 to 0;
            backup
                       incremental level 0 cumulative
                       skip inaccessible
                       tag sunday_level_0
                 filesperset=10
                       format '/oracle_4/oradata/devdb/backup/rman/db_%d.%t.%s.%p.%c.bkp'
                       database;
            sql 'alter system archive log current';
            backup
                 filesperset=10
                       skip inaccessible
                       format '/oracle_3/oradata/devdb/backup/rman/al_%d.%t.%s.%p.%c.bkp'
                       archivelog all
                       delete input;
            release channel c1;
           release channel c2;
           release channel c3;
           release channel c4;
            delete noprompt obsolete;
    }Into this script, I perform a backup that stores backupsets on '/oracle_4/oradata/devdb/backup/rman/db_%d.%t.%s.%p.%c.bkp'.
    Is there a way, using only one "backup database", to divide the backupsets along several paths?
    This is because all backup sets are stored on only one path.
    Thanks!!!!

    When you configure your channel just specify different FORMAT clause and configure the device type to enable PARALLEL. Check Configuring Specific Channels for an example.

  • What's good about droid X

    I come to this forum and all I see is bad this, broken that, and not working whatever. I would like to here all the good things about the X.
    I'll start off with the bad because no one has a perfect phone. I had my droid for about a month and I did have some issues with it,  gps, dropped calls, screen would freeze at the most inconvenient times, sluggish when switching screens, and the battery life was usually less than 8 hours. I called CS and they were more than happy to send me another phone and I received it just a few days ago.
    Now the good. since I got the new phone battery life is now over 15 hours on single charge. The phone is much more responsive and switching screens is now a joy to see. No problems with screen freezing up. I still get dropped call but I'm seeing that it might be the other carrier with the problem (maybe verizon does not play nice with the network from another carrier lol). And the GPS seems to be working better.I have to say when I got my first droid I loaded it with apps without a second thought and most of my problems could of been just that. Now I didn't install any apps and testing the phone with just the stock apps it came with. So far working great with little bugs and loving the phone.With update could get even better.
    Those of your that are just about to get your X take your time and get to know your phone. As others have mentioned download the manual and read up on it. Know what it can do before you add anything to it that way you will have a baseline to compare it to after you load it up with your favorite apps. No phone is perfect, if you dont believe me just take a peek at the forums from users on phones from different carriers like Vibrant (tmobile), EVO (sprint) and so on. Take  the good and weigh it against the bad. if good is more, that your are a happy custumer with minor issues about the phone you can live with. If the bad out weighs the good than return your phone and go with another phone and maybe another carrier that will work for you. I was with tmobile and it was a nightmare since May until I went to Verizon mid August. So if you have good things to say about the X and Verizon please let me know because My 30 day trial is up beginning of October and I need to hear all that could be good with VZ. Oh and when I got my new phone they extended my  30 days, good service so far.

    Its not all bad...... I have my issues with mine but I don't know if it is my phone, software or me just having higher expectations. But I love the camera, in a little over a month I have more pictures then all of my previous phones combined, I love listening to Pandora, and having FM radio, weather, and news at my fingertips, and the new found joy of being able to prove someone wrong in the midst of a bar argument in a matter of seconds..Priceless.   But I have my issues youtube/streaming video freezes, the wifi which I thought I could ignore is like a constant itch in a place you can't reach. I have found that the issues with freezing screens etc.... tend to come with crappy apps, or running to much at once, but Froyo will supposedly solve the screen issue.  I have had since day 1 a single stuck pixel but 98% of time I don't see it. The video camera works great but then you can't upload the video b/c of video size but if wifi worked that probably wouldn't be a problem...In any case this fabled release of Froyo should be any day now and I hope it will resolve the issues I am having if not I will see about getting a new phone.  I am past my 30 days so I am stuck with the droid now but if it is defective at the very least I can get a new one. It is by far the best phone I have ever had/used better than the iphones I have seen but not by much especially if these few things don't get fixed.  But enough of the bad, Google sky awesome, Google maps/navigation got me home from a concert when my gaps in the truck told us to go through a closed road and a flooded bridge lol, gmail works great and swype is a cool feature I hope I will eventually get good at.  facebook, is facebook but if its your thing then you'll like it. I have downloaded a bunch of tools, a flashlight that uses the flash and  I use frequently, a level, alarm, stopwatch, police scanner. Voice to text works sometimes but only short phrases and not all words.  FX camera is an awesome free camera app, it doesn't zoom but it does give some really cool effects .  I like the phone, but I am also frustrated by the phone fix my issues and I'd love the phone.
    And just for a laugh when I spell checked this, words Verizon's spell check doesnt know :
    droid <----- yeah really
    swype
    froyo
    youtube
    facebook
    app
    I dont know arent these fairly standard terms? just chuckled when I saw that : )

  • Looking for security tips about webhosting app

    We want to use an XServe for hosting some of our clients' websites. These should have web and ftp services only (maybe webmail) as well as able to install their own CGIs (or run ours).
    So far (and with the help of the forum here I managed to set up the server. However before taking over the first websites, I generally wanted to know if there are any security issues to consider when intending such an application.
    So some things I'm still unsure with when setting up a user regarding security:
    (1)
    Each user I create is automatically assigned to the group 20 (shortname "staff"). Should I made any changes here ? Must the user be part of other groups ?
    (2)
    Should I set the login shell for these users to "none" or doesn't it play a role ?
    (3)
    Which application has the "Info" section for each user at the WGM ? Is it just for information ?
    (4)
    How can I prevent a user logging in to the server by telnet or ssh ? Currently I have configured our router to block traffic on ports 22 and 23 and this works quite well. But isn't there a more radical solution (beside disabling these ports in the server firewall) ?
    Any other advise or security tips for protecting the server is welcome and appreciated.

    1. I would probably set it up so each of your clients has it's own group.
    Although, I don't know the specifics of your setup.
    Why is this recommended seen security aspects ?
    Users have only access by ftp/mail services, anything else is disabled.
    2. A shell is required for FTP access. So unfortunatly this is not an option.
    Strange that Apple likes to give each user that requires ftp also shell access in the way that they can log in via terminal - or is their command set limited to only viewing files, creating directories and changing permissions ?
    Anyway, since we disabled the ports for ssh in our router I think that we are on the safe side here. Or can you think of a tricky user that finds a way to work around this ? I don't think, but better asking the experts before a hacker shows that it is possible
    4. The info tab in WGM is to populate the associated fields in the LDAP DB.
    Okay, then we leave this out, since users have not access to the server in a way that they can use the address book.
    May I add another question:
    How safe is it to enable the webmail feature for users ? Are there any known bugs or security holes ?

  • My humble opinion about Droid X vs Droid Incredible

    I had a chance to try out a Droid Incredibile for three days. I prefer the Droid X for several reasons:
    On the X I can place any phone contact on any screen and use either a widget or an apps. With the Incredible you are limited to "favorites" only and limited to nine. I see no way to set up another "favorite" on another screen..
    You are limited to what widgets you can set up on your Incredible. It must be a completely blank screen or else such widgets as FM radio will not go on.
    Sadly, the Incredible does not have Swype, which I use all the time on my X.
    You can not set up vibration only for notifications.  You can only wake up your Incredible by tapping the power button, with the Droid, you can also tap the home button to wake it up.
    Finally, On the X, if you are on the very left screen and wish to go to the very right screen, you swipe and tap on the three buttons and your there. On the Incredible, you must swipe the whole way.
    None of these are very big deals, I grant you. But they are minor irritants
    Oh, don't get me wrong, there are things I wish the X could do like the Incredible. For example, the lock bar is so much easier on the Incredible to open up. The manner in which you delete a widget/apps from the screen is so much more easier on the Incredible than on the X.
    As far as bars, and this IS a big deal. With the X I get 3g and four bars at home. with the Incredible, I get 3g and only two bars. Gladly, it doesn't interfere with calling or talking.

    You can place shortcuts on any screen to about anything, including a contact. You don't have to use the Favorites widget.
    Only a few widgets are full screen size. Some of them offer two different sizes.
    You can get the Swype beta for Incredible.
    Vibration only for notifications: Goto Volume in Sound Settings and turn the volume all the way down for notifications. Make sure the Vibrate option is on.
    Wake up button: Correct, and I like that way. The "home button" or any other front button is too easily pressed while in a holdster or pocket.
    Moving to another screen: Pinch zoom any home screen to see minature versions of all screens to pick from.
    Besides the above, is there anything else you like better on the X? How does the camera and camcorder operation compare? And the resulting photos/video? Does the size of the screen really make a difference? I'm asking because I just got the Incredible, but have 30 days to switch to the X if I want.

  • A question about Droid pre-order and contract status

    Hi,
    I preorded the droid from best buy the first day preorders were available. The person who handled my order didn't mention problems with my current contract status. My 2yr contract isn't up till 4/2010, and from reading here, it seems that best buy doesn't do the 1yr early upgrades.
    So when I go down to best buy on friday to attempt to pick up my phone what are gonna be my options?
    $599 retail price, or nothing? And so, will they refund my $50?
    Would they do the 1yr and $369 price, if they consider I put in over one year on my current contract and consider it a $1yr? (I read someone say this would be an option)
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Who does best buy sell phones to if they don't offer upgrades? Just new customers and people with expired accounts?
    Can someone explain this post to me? http://www.howardforums.com/showpost.php?p=13177342&postcount=32
    According to the guy that posted that, he was orginally denied, like has been said here. but then the looked it up and told him they'd honor the 1yr early upgrade.
    To me, it just doesn't make much sense to not honor what verizon does.. cause you'd be losing lots of business. Anyone who is up for NE2, and denied honoring it by BB will just go to the verizon store, or order it online via verizons website. Anyone 1 year into their 2 year contract who is denied the 1yr early upgrade that verizon offers, and who doesn't care much about waiting for their $100-$50 NE2 discount will again be forced to buy elsewhere cause BB turns them away.
    I'm not trying to make threats that BB needs to change. Just trying to draw attention to something that makes no sense to lots of customers. And would like someone to actually look into this again, since it seems to vary from store to store, clerk to clerk.

  • A few tips about using the Text Panel

    A recent question about the text panel set me to working with it and I thought I'd share some tips I discovered, since the help files don't explain the text panel at all.
    At one time I called the text panel "useless", but I've changed my mind -- it's a nice thing to have.  Essentially it's a quick way to instantaneously
    Create a new layer with a semi-transparent layer style.
    Create a rectangular shape on that layer.
    Add a drop shadow effect to that shape.
    All with a double-click!
    You access the text panel from the "Effects" panel and its "Photo Effects" icon, choosing the "Frame" effect:
    Double-clicking on it creates the layer and the shape.  By default, the text panel layer has a semi-transparent layer style applied to it and this has caused great grief for those who want a completely opaque background behind some text.  Not to worry, that's easily done.  To whet your appetite, here are a few effects that can be achieved with the text panel:
    Let's start with the "Big text" box:
    Create the text panel.
    Because we want an opaque panel, right-click on the shape in the Editor and select "Clear layer style".  POOF!  Instantly you've got an opaque white shape with no drop shadow.
    Move and resize the panel.  (It's still horizontal at this point.)
    Add some text (which will come in on its own layer).
    Size and position the text relative to the shape, and when you're satisfied, select both the shape layer and the text layer (using the Ctrl key) in the Layers panel and click on the "Link layers" icon at the bottom of the Layers panel.  This links the shape and text so they can be moved and rotated as one.  The layers wind up looking like this:
    Now, let's look at the "small text" box:
    Create the text panel.
    Position the panel and add and position some text as before.
    Because we want the text panel to be a dark grey (instead of the default white), with the text panel layer selected, select the "Create new fill or adjustment layer" icon at the bottom of the Layers panel and select "Hue/Saturation...".  Be sure to use the "Clip to layer" icon, and lower the "Lightness" value:
    This gives the nice transparent grey background so the white text shows up very well, even against the bright white of the clouds.
    Select all three of the layers and link them together:
    Finally, you can have some fun with the "Fancy" effects:
    Create the text panel.
    Position the panel, add some text, and set their positions.
    Add a "Hue/Saturation" adjustment layer as before (clipping it to the text panel shape layer).
    Colorize the text panel by using these settings:
    5.  Don't forget to link the layers together:
    6.  Double-click on the "fx" icon to the right of the text panel shape layer, which will bring up the "Layer effects" dialog box.  Here you can create the bevel and adjust the size and transparency of the drop shadow.
    You can also get this nice faded effect on the text panel:
    After following the steps listed above, add a mask layer to the text panel shape layer and draw a gradient fill on that mask layer to fade the layer.  I used a linear fill going from white to a dark gray because I wanted some of the text panel to always be showing:
    N.B.: Make sure you always clip the "Hue/Saturation" adjustment layer to the text panel shape layer so that the H/S adjustments only affect the text panel.
    That's it!  Enjoy!
    Ken

    Yes nice job.
    Thanks for posting this.

  • I need tips about queued message handler

    Hello, I have to use, for the first time a queued message handler. I'd like to know what is the best way to share data between cases in a loop and from a loop to another, I think with local variables  isn't  the best way...
    However all the tips on the queued message handler are welcome!!!
    Thanks

    Shift registers.  Doesn't matter if QMH, State Machine, Producer-Consumer, etc.
    smilegv wrote:

    Well, now that completely depends on what you are passing around.  Streaming data?  Use a Queue or User Event.  Last known value (ie Tag)?  Global Variables, Action Engine.

    Ian going to the USA and Canada in September.  I am unclear on what, if anything, I would need to do to access the Internet. I have been told that I can purchase a SIM card but once inserted, I cannot change it back to a UK one.  Is this true? Can I simply use The Cloud or would this be a non starter in certain 'remote' areas? Any help, tips would be appreciated.

    no it's not but if your iphone is sim locked with an uk carrier you need the carrier to unlock it before you can use other sim cards

  • Reminder on forum pages about awarding points?

    This isn't for me, since at this rate I will be a Level 4 in something over 600 years, but I was wondering if there could be some kind of discreet and short (clutter avoiding) but highly visible, reminder or announcement on the forum pages, themselves, about awarding points and the points system.
    I realize that for most helpers here the satisfaction of helping someone, and maybe even getting a thank you, is enough, but a thank you can be made more meaningful with very little effort.
    Many new members are oblivious, don't bother to read the Help and TOU, at least not very carefully, myself included when I first registered here. I see so many not bothering to award points I think, not out of indifference, but simply because they aren't paying attention. Often a question will be marked answered, but no points awarded - not simply to close off the thread, as in some cases - but when there has, in fact, been a genuine solution.
    Could there be some form of gentle reminder, avoiding pushiness, at the top of each of the pages? I know there is already the "Solved and Helpful still available" in the actual thread, (and "Answered question, Unanswered question with answer points still available Unanswered question at the bottom of the page"), but I think for many who haven't understood the points system to begin with, these may not even register- or be very noticeable.
    If this has already been discussed and dismissed please excuse.

    Eric W wrote
    We are looking at changes in the future to make it clearer to everyone (new and older users alike) on how the system works.
    Thanks Eric; could this include, possibly, some sort of simple notice at the top of the forum pages (as described above, discreet, non-pushy, non-manipulative and, short)? I don't see how this would violate "other forms of encouragement are frowned upon." It would seem to me Apple has everything to gain by creating a more "encouraging" climate for helpers to do their work here. As it is, it must be somewhat frustrating at times.
    A Brody wrote
    Come in here more often if you feel you have the knowledge of how to offer the best answers.
    I'm not sure what this is supposed to mean. With respect, A Brody, am I detecting some needless sarcasm, or am I misunderstanding? I certainly don't presume to offer the "best answers." Is making a simple suggestion presumptuous of me?
    You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink.
    Agreed. But I wonder if the horse even knows the water is nearby.
    People come in here with varying levels of free time. You can't expect everyone to be able to spare the time to mark a thread one way or another.
    How much extra time does it take to mark a thread one way or the other? Wouldn't many more people do this only if they were made more aware?
    Everyone would and should carefully read the lengthy Help and TOU. But human nature being what it is, most people, especially people interested in finding an answer to a more or less urgent question. are not going to take the time for that. They might, however, pay attention to a short notice.

  • Need some tips about efficiency regarding jdbc connections

    Hi there. I am a pre-novice to jsp, jdbc, etc. Anyways, I recently created a site for the purpose of learning jsp, servlets etc. and it has been going pretty decent. However, today I started thinking of whether my coding would be able to survive if many users were to use it.
    Let me describe in brief what I am doing and then I will move on to my question(s).
    I have a 'My Account' feature and users can register and then login their respective accounts. I ask the user to login and then I check if the login is correct with the saved data in my MySQL database. If its correct they can enter otherwise they get to try again. Simple enuf. I also create a session when they login and in it I put their username. I also use page response.sendRedirect() method to send people back to login page if they dont have a session created already and they try to access pages inside the 'My Account'. It seems to be working great for my purposes and all that but as I said today I started thinking. Right now, I believe my coding is in some matters pretty lousy. I have a bean whose one and only purpose is to connect to the database. But I noticed that almost all my pages in 'My Account' need to connect to the database to do one thing or another and I tend to be creating a new connection for each page using that bean. So I started thinking.. what is the best way to go about doing this???
    Should I create ONE connection at the time of logging and then use that for rest of the pages (I remember reading something about scope=session for JSP usebean).. or should I keep doing what I am doing.. that is opening a new connection at each page and then closing it before going to the next page. Also, I wonder how good my site will stand if multiple people are trying to access same things etc etc. Please I looked around quite a bit but I havnt found a simple straightforward response. I would really appreciate if anyone here can share their wisdom or post some useful links. I wanna become a wise coder just like you :)

    duh Looks like I posted this in the wrong forum by mistake
    note to himself: To become a wise coder post in the right forums!

  • I would like any tips about where to take my Macbook Air to solve an iMovie software I have been struggling with for quite a long time. I need to see a person who is willing to help me finalise a film, any tips welcome? Thanks

    Getting in person support

    Hi Klaus, I have tried to do that before - I think you replied before, asking me what system I was using. My response was 'Hello, thank you, I am using OS X Version Lion 10.7.5 and iMovie '11 vwesion 9.0.4 (1635).'
    Despite completely clearing my machine, and moving the movie project to an external drive, when I try to finalise the movie I get error -108 after approximately one hour of processing.
    I am very keen to be able to export this film. My technical knowledge is limited and I learned a basic level of iMovie to make the film - often online responses and suggestions are too complex for me - hence my question about where I would go to have an expert look at this problem...
    Any suggestions would be most welcome, thanks

  • Hints and tips about OCP certification 10g

    Hi,
    in a few weeks I will have my certification test for OCP Oracle 10g.
    For this I'm interested in hints and tips for the test. Did somebody completed this test (not the upgrade one) and could tell me please the main topic, some tips for best preparation and so on? Are the questions only "multiple choice" or are there also "fill-in" questions?
    Thank you in advance

    Hi Dana
    It's all multiple choice. If you are going for OCP I assume you will be writing 10g DBA 2. The following link has exam details like passing score, points per chapter, etc.
