Motorola Surfboard (combination modem and wireless router) plus Airport time Capsule - 2TB

I am reading all of the discussion posts regarding the new OS Lion and starting to become wary. Here is my pridicament:
I have 3 PS3 game consoles (2 are wirelessly connected to the Motorola Surfboard),
3 PC laptops (also wirelessly connected to the Motorola Surfboard)
My thoughts were to purchase the Airport Time Capsule with the new IMac and possibly set up a wired connection to the Motorola Surfboard with the Airport Time Capsule, then provide a wireless connection for all of the  Apple products in my home as well as a back up file system. Mind you I have 3 IPhones, 2 IPads, and will be purchasing a new IMac with Retina Display and an HP - LaserJet Pro MFP M1217nfw Network-Ready Wireless Black-and-White All-In-One Printe. Will this be too much on one modem? and has anyone else even tried this type of configuration?
As smart as I think I am, I am hesitant on making this purchase, and sometimes I feel that sales reps at retail stores tend to be over confident in their knowledge of a wireless home system.
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Certainly not.
The limiting factor is likely to be your ISP's delivered speed. Whatever bandwidth you have will be shared among all the devices. If they're all streaming video at the same time, for example, one or more of them may become slow.
You don't need to purchase a Time Capsule simply because you're buying a new Mac. The iMac can join any network.
The Time Capsule can replace the router function of your existing combination modem / router, or it can join your network as either a wireless or wired client. If you want to use it for Time Machine backups, you should favor the latter. It can also create an additional wireless access point if you so choose. The Time Capsule is a very capable full-featured router but if you don't need a router or additional access point, then you can use any external HD for Time Machine backups. That would be a lot less expensive.
Lion has already been superseded by Mountain Lion. A new iMac will ship with Mountain Lion installed.
Only certain model MacBook Pros and iPads have a "retina display" - no iMacs.

my computer is macbook white with Mac OS X (10. 6.8), will i able to use the new Airport Time Capsule 2TB and work properly with Time Capsule on my computer to back up wirelessly?
And what does it mean "to administrate" because it was written in requirement of the Airport Time Capsule 2TB ?

You must use a Mac running Lion (10.7.5), Mountain Lion or Mavericks to be able to set up the Time Capsule and make any changes to the settings.
A recent version iPhone or iPad could also be used for this task.
From the Specifications on the Time Capsule:
    Setup and Administration
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 6 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3

  • How do you replace a Virgin wireless router with a time capsule?

    Hi Folks
i have just bought a brand new 1tb time capsule yesterday and im trying to connect it too my virgin modem and replace the virgin wireless router i already have.....i thought it would be an easy setup of just plugging in the ethernet cable into the time capsule..but this has not worked??..can this be done?? i have restarted all devices too!...i am now clueless!
the the time capsule has backed up my hard drive (mac book pro) with no problems!
    kind regards
    kathdol

Are you talking about a separate modem and Virgin router, rather than their wretched 'Superhub' (modem and router combined) - the latter is a whole different can of worms.
Assuming the former, you should be able to remove the Virgin router and plug your Time Capsule into the modem: you will need to power down the modem and leave it for a few minutes (to forget the MAC address of the Virgin router), then plug in the TC and power up the modem. Make sure that the TC is set to 'Share a public IP number', not 'Distribute a range of IP numbers' or 'Bridge mode'. (If the interface is the same as the Airport Express it's 'Manual Setup'>'Internet' (in the toolbar)>Internet settings.

  • Replaced Airport Extreme router with Airport Time Capsule-now printer won't connect to network

I had no issues with connecting to the Airport Extreme.  I have recently replaced the Extreme with an Airport Time Capsule (the new one that is 802.11 ac).  All of my other products were able to detect the WIFI router and connected with no issue once I entered the password.  However, the HP 2710 finds the WiFi router, allows me to select it but when I enter my password and click OK, it comes back after several minutes saying that it can't connect to the network.  I checked the IP address and it's all 0.0.0.0 - it's won't establish an IP address either.

Hello @theros1093 , and welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I understand that you're having issues connecting to your router. I would like to help!
I'd recommend powering down your computer.  Once it's powered down,  go to the printer and select Setup , select Network, and select.  Restore Network Defaults.  Power down the printer.  Once it's all shut down, unplug the router power for 60 seconds, and plug it back in.  After it broadcasts, power on the printer and computer, and reconnect to the wireless network.
Good luck and please let me know the results of your troubleshooting steps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums!

  • How to connect a printer to a wireless connection using airport/time capsule

How do you connect a Cannon MP620 printer to the wireless network with my time capsule/airport?  It was set up before but I've had to redo all the settings with a new Time Capsule and now the printer isn't working.  Can't remember how I set it up before.  Didn't seem that hard back then.
    Thanks!

So you plugedd the printer into the time capsule usb right?
You need to re-add the printer in the system preferences one more time because the location has moved.

  • I just got an Airport time capsule 2TB. When I start back-up it backs up about 17kb and then stops but says Calculating time remaining.... Anyone got an idea of what's going on?

Just got an Airport Time capsule,
I set it up as a network extension and began back-up.
It estimated 4 hours so I left it run. After 10 hours I noticed it had stopped backing up but had not back up to the time capsule. So I tried again and it just got stuck on Calculating Time Remaining. I reset the capsule a few times and have set it up as instructed. The same has happened each time.
It backs up about 17kb of info and then freezes with Calculating time remaining below the progress bar.
    Anyone any ideas?
    Thanks

Network extension sounds onimous.. is this wireless extension.. it is super bad for large TM backups..
Always do the first backup direct by ethernet to the TC even if it has to be in full isolation.
Stalling at 17kb might be just the wireless having issues. Or it can be a corruption in a file.
Pondini is our source of all things Time Machine.. and trouble shooting it.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
A1.. install the widget so you have access to the TM logs.. what the heck it is doing.
A4. if you upgrade installed OS.. do a reset of TM and start over.
    A5 verify the disk.
C9 watch out for network names that are over long and over complex.. especially with Mavericks. It is hopeless.
I do recommend using a USB connected drive.. to do a first backup it is often the easy way.
Much faster and more reliable than over network.

  • Suggestions for Cable Modem and Wireless Router

    Hey everyone!
I have the new iMac and would like to have a faster wireless router. Currently using an old D-Link Wireless G router and would like something like the Time Capsule (as it has Airport Extreme in it) or Netgear Rangemax Dual Band Wirless-N Gigabit Router. My problem is, my Internet is through my cable company, so it comes into the house as a cable connection. It appears that these two combos would still require the use of a cable modem.
Any suggestions to keep the equipment down to one piece? If not, any suggestions for a cable modem so I can return this old one to the cable company?
What would be the best/quickest wireless router?
    Thanks for your help!

Go to your ISP's web site and do a search from your ISP for compatible cable modems. Then buy the capable modem your ISP says that is comp[atible. On the new cable modem find the Serial number & MAC address, make then call your ISP tech help desk and tell them the new modem you got and he/she will ask you that information. When the ISP tech says they can see/ping that new cable modem then it will work. Then connect a new cheaper Airport Extreme and any external USB2 hard drive to connect to that new Airport Extreme. I say this because Apple put out and Update a little while ago that will allow an external connected to an Extreme as a Time Machine disk.
PS: Remember the old trick of checking you Ethernet cables. I can't count how times I have seen professionals install all new high speed switches, routers, etc. and wonder why no speed is seen. Then after numerous trouble shooting they discover they used the old 10 Base T cables and just changing the cable solved their problem.
Just make sure you do this one at a time starting with getting the ISP compatible cable modems list to know what cable modem you can buy (to save that monthly ISP rental fee). Then you can get the going as long as so speak with your ISP tech to give them that new cable modem Serial number and MAC address so they can register it with their servers.
This will be to easy as long as you do things in step.

  • DSL Modem and Wireless Router problems

I started to have problems on Tuesday.
    My Equipment is:
Dell Precision 870 PC with a Intel Pro network card
Apple IMAC with the Apple Lan connection
    Lynksys/Cisco E3000 (Problem started with a Linksys WRT610N router)
    Verizon (Actiontec) GT701C DSL modem
I came down to my office and I noticed that the DSL light on my modem was not lit.  In the past
this has ment that there is a problem in the Central Office.  Later in the day I got hold of Verizon
tech support and we got the DSL running again with the modem connected to either computer.
When I connect the router to the modem and the computers to the router, Dell via wire and Apple
via wireless 5.0 GHz 802.11N inout and restart both the router and the modem, I get connectivity
through the router and the modem but the DSL light on the modem is not lit.  After a long period
of time the DSL light may come on then I loose connectivity.
Everything was working correctly til late Monday night/early Tuesday morning.
I have reset both the modem and routers to factory defaults several time.  I have a problem when
trying to get connectivity with the moden after setting it up again and it takes me to the Verizon
DSL startup site.  Tech support walked me throuogh using the "192.168.1.1/verizon/redirect" and
shutting the redirect off.  I then have connectivity as long as the router is not connected.
I thoought the router went so I just installed a new router, the Linksys/Cisco E3000, and I still
    have the DSL light problem.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Having both routers the same IP address is a little bit confusing, but possible since each router creates it's own subnet and provides full PNAT support. Actiontec DSL modem has to have DHCP enabled since Linksys WAN (not LAN) port should be connected to one of 4 Actiontec LAN ports. Linksys should not have any configuration setup in regards of your WAN account. Just set it to dynamic address. In ohter words:
    1. RJ-11 connect to Actiontec mode/router.
    2. Actiontec modem should be configured to acquire an IP address from Verizon and to provide all authentication info to Verizon.
    3. Actiontec modem should be configured to allow clients to acquire dynamic IP addresses -- DHCP enabled.
    4. Linsys WAN (not LAN!) port should be connected to Actiontec LAN port.
    5. Linksys should be configured to acquire dynamic IP address and no authentifacations.
    6. Configure Linksys to be DHCP enabled or you can use static IP addresss if you want.
    7. Wireless devices would be connected to Linksys and on the way to the Internet addresses would go through double NAT conversions. Any wired device connected to Linksys would have similar  features. Any device connected to Linksys should be able to connect 192.168.1.1 assigned to Linksys, but not to Actiontec.
    8. To be able to connect Linksys and Actiontec would no be able to communicate unless you split 192.168.1.0/24 into smaller subnets and set specific routes in the table. But even you do so you will not be able to access 192.168.1.1 accross subnets boundary.
    Hope it helps.

  • Can I use an Airport Extreme as a modem and wireless router?

I realize this shows my ignorance, but I am wondering if I need to lease my isp's (Comcast) modem or if I can use and Airport Extreme instead.  Thanks for your help.

AirPort Extreme is a router only.....no modem on board.....so you will need a modem to work with the AirPort Extreme if you want to be able to access the Internet.

  • Will a time capsule work connected to a Sky wireless router, or should time capsule replace the Sky wireless router

I cant work out whether I should connect my new time capsule to my existing Sky wireless boadbannd router, or does the time capsule kit replace my Sky
router .I would really appreciate a none technical answer to my dilema before I open the box.

It depends on what the sky router exactly is..
If it is a modem, then you definitely have to keep it.. is it satellite or some sort of wireless internet??
If it is a router that plugs into an existing modem then in all  likelihood the TC can replace it.
If the sky router can be bridged then the sky router can be kept but the TC work as the router.
And finally even if the sky router is locked and you cannot do anything.. the TC can still work as a bridged device to provide backup and wireless connection within your network.
So however the situation it is possible to use your TC.

  • Trouble with Qwest DSL and wireless router

Just got Qwest DSL yesterday. Connected the Actiontec M1000 modem directly to our IMac and things worked fine. Unfortunately, our office doesn't have a phone line and the permanent home of the modem is going to be elsewhere in the house. I tried to connect our D-Link wireless router WBR-2310 Rangebooster G to the Actiontec, phone jack--ethernet cable---actiontec---ethernet cable---d-link wan jack. Airport can "see" the wireless network we had setup before we switched to qwest dsl, but cannot connect to the internet.
I'm assuming there is communication problem between the dsl modem and wireless router.
How should my network settings be changed? Do I need to reconfigure the modem, or the wireless router, or both?

    {quote}
Now, I must say that the 3mbps download speed I'm apparently paying for has never been achieved. The fastest I got was 1.4mbps when hardwired. Now with the wireless I'm only around 750 kbps. I'm only twenty feet away and one wall from the router. Any suggestions on increasing this performance?
Very few sites can actually send you 3mb/s. You can test your connection here:
    http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
    or here:
    http://speedtest.net/
If your speeds don't seem to be inline then you will have to deal with your broadband provider.
At 54mb/s your wireless is not the bottleneck, the internet is.
I'm getting 6mb DSL and it tests perfect, but I wanted the extra speed because I'm running 6 or 8 machines online at all times, and you usually get a faster upload speed with the deal. This can be very important for sharing files and sending emails with attachments, etc.

  • How to connect New Airport Time Capsule to non Apple asdl router

    Guys,
I have just purchased a new AirPort Time Capsule to back up the various macs in my house. I want to connect it to my wireless router which is a non apple product but the setup instructions are a little unclear to me.
My current router has simply a phone line connector and the power source coming into it. Do I simply connect an ethernet cable from the Airport to the Router. And if so, do I use the single Ethernet WAN port or one of the three Ethernet LAN ports on the rear of the airport? I assume the other end of the cable goes into any of the Ethernet slots on the back of my router which are marked 'Ethernet', or would it go into the socket marked 'Broadband WAN'?
Appreciate your help and if anyone is willing to speak on phone, I am very ahppy to call you in the next couple of hours! I am in the UK
    Best, Anthony

    thanks LaPastengue!
    Here is what ive got
What ATT router do you have? Exact make and model please.
        gateway 2wire from at&t
What TC do you have.. Latest AC tall one?? Or older one?? If older. .please tell us the model number. A1409 for example from the base mat.
yes I have the latest airport time capsule 2TB
Please tell us the full setup.. what is currently plugged into the main modem router??
The Main modem route has an ethernet cord plugged in the other side of the cord is plugged into the phone      jack
Do not plug the TC in first.. plug a single ethernet TC to the computer.. Hmm. so I need an additional ethenet cord to plug the TC into the computer? Leaving the router plugged in as is?
Open the airport utility and change the TC to bridge mode.
    https://discussions.apple.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2-23706673-32722 6/450-411/bridgev6AU.png
Update the TC and then plug it into the ATT modem and plug it into your computer or use the wireless and then tell us what happens.

  • Airport Time capsule behind cisco router download speed

My airport time capsule  is connected to the internet in bridge mode via a cisco router.
The cisco router provides a 99Mbps download speed. However, when I " bridge"  my time capsule in between (wired) the speed slows down to 9 Mbps.
I have already tried to assign a static DHCP IP to my time capsules MAC address and disabled DMZ for that specific IP address, but am failing to get the speed up to par.
    Any suggestions?

I have used Time capsule 1.5 year behind a copperjet  modem on ADSL, no problems.
Changed provider and am connected by cable with new cisco modem including router.
So the set up looks like:
    internet>cisco modem/router>airport time capsule>macbook pro
The cisco modem without airport time capsule is working ok: when logged in speed is 99 Mbps as it should be (wired and wireless)
Connecting cisco router with UTP cable to time capsule and time capsule with UTP to macbook slows down speed to 9 Mbps
    (time capsule in bridgemode)
    Specs:
    Macbook pro OSX yosemite
    Airport Time capsule 2TB 2013 (v 7.7.3)
    Cisco modem/router:EPC3928
