Motorola Surfboard SBG6580 in wireless mode??

Anyone know if Motorola's Surfboard SBG6580 cable modem can be used in wireless mode with an iMac? There's a warning *inside* the box that it only works with ethernet.  Software install fails, blaming it on Adobe Air.

They said the Motorola works wirelessly with Macintosh, it is only the CD install that does not work properly with Macintosh.
Then, the responder doesn't know its backside from a hole in the ground. Mine's hardwired to ethernet and works w/o issues. This is the la latest speediest w/basic internet service.

  • Want to use Airport Express As A Wifi Extender/Repeater for Motorola Surfboard sbg6580 NO CABLES...

I am trying to simply extend my wifi network with Airport Express N. I am trying get my Motorola Surfboard sbg6580 to work with AEn, MOT sbg6580 has WDS and apple.com says "it does work with other routers" I guess I cant figure this out... I do not want to run 50 ft of ethernet cable and drill holes in floors, just simply extend network with AEn as repeater or extender. Is this possible? If so how?

Suggest that you check with the TW cable folks to see if they have a device that will do what you want.
If they cannot help, it is always best to use products from the same manufacturer to insure compatibility in applications like this, so if you have the make of your modem or router handy, you might check on the manufacturer's website to see if they offer what you need.

  • Recently upgraded my service with Time Warner Cable to Extreme speed and got a new Motorola Surfboard SBG6580, now I get Error -50 constantly.  Anyone else have this issue?

I just upgraded my service to Extreme with Time Warner Cable and got the motorola surfboard sbg6580 modem.  Now when I try to dowload any videos or TV shows on iTunes, I get an Error -50 mid download.  Anyone have a solution for this?  I am using a PC, not a Mac computer.

I don't want a used replacement phone when I just bought mine. I have had your "like new" replacements before for my basic phone and had a ton of issues straight out of the box, which is why I don't want one when my phone is so new and I have had issues since day 1! Not once on my several calls to tech support, did anyone tell me to go exchange it the first 2 weeks. That is just one reason they want to send me a replacement. Another is the USB does not work properly, I can't use it to do anything but charge the phone- and my husband has the same phone so I know is not the cord or the computer because his works perfectly. The connection was sporadic so I just installed a new SIM card. So far that has helped with dropping 4g all the time. I have never been able to back up my contacts, spent 2 hours on the phone with tech support the first night I got it just trying to sync the contacts from my old phone. It never worked, I had to hand input the numbers. If Verizon won't do right by be and give me a new phone, I at least would like them to get mine working like it should have when I bought it.

  • Compatible with motorola surfboard

Did anyone have trouble getting the Airport Extreme to work with Time Warner Cable Motorola Surfboard SBG6580?

Thanks for the additional information. Certainly swings the "suspect" over to the Extreme from the modem.
You tried a "soft" reset on the Extreme when you held in the reset button. It would be a good idea to try a "hard reset" as follows to completely clear the device of any old settings and return it to factory defaults.
Power down the Extreme for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button and +keep holding it in+ as you plug the power back in
Release the reset button after approximately 10 seconds
Not sure if you are using the "guided setup" or Manual Setup. Guided is OK as long as you select "ethernet" to connect, not PPPoE. If you use the guided setup, you can always go back into AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup to go at things that way.
Sounds like you are on the right path and will get the "green light" soon.

  • Motorola Surfboard (combination modem and wireless router) plus Airport time Capsule - 2TB

I am reading all of the discussion posts regarding the new OS Lion and starting to become wary. Here is my pridicament:
I have 3 PS3 game consoles (2 are wirelessly connected to the Motorola Surfboard),
3 PC laptops (also wirelessly connected to the Motorola Surfboard)
My thoughts were to purchase the Airport Time Capsule with the new IMac and possibly set up a wired connection to the Motorola Surfboard with the Airport Time Capsule, then provide a wireless connection for all of the  Apple products in my home as well as a back up file system. Mind you I have 3 IPhones, 2 IPads, and will be purchasing a new IMac with Retina Display and an HP - LaserJet Pro MFP M1217nfw Network-Ready Wireless Black-and-White All-In-One Printe. Will this be too much on one modem? and has anyone else even tried this type of configuration?
As smart as I think I am, I am hesitant on making this purchase, and sometimes I feel that sales reps at retail stores tend to be over confident in their knowledge of a wireless home system.
Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

    Certainly not.
The limiting factor is likely to be your ISP's delivered speed. Whatever bandwidth you have will be shared among all the devices. If they're all streaming video at the same time, for example, one or more of them may become slow.
You don't need to purchase a Time Capsule simply because you're buying a new Mac. The iMac can join any network.
The Time Capsule can replace the router function of your existing combination modem / router, or it can join your network as either a wireless or wired client. If you want to use it for Time Machine backups, you should favor the latter. It can also create an additional wireless access point if you so choose. The Time Capsule is a very capable full-featured router but if you don't need a router or additional access point, then you can use any external HD for Time Machine backups. That would be a lot less expensive.
Lion has already been superseded by Mountain Lion. A new iMac will ship with Mountain Lion installed.
Only certain model MacBook Pros and iPads have a "retina display" - no iMacs.

Yes, if you plan to connect the AirPort Extreme back to the Motorola modem/router using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection.
No, if you were planning to have the AirPort Extreme extend the Motorola signal wirelesssly.

  • How to configure AE to Motorola Surfboard Extreme via Comcast

Just had X-Finity installed. Bought my own Modem Motorola Surfboard Extreme Sb 6141 technician could not configure the AE for WiFi. Is there a tutorial for my ignorant arse?

The SB6141 is the most problematic Modem you could have picked to work with Airport router.
You have placed the post in the Time Capsule thread.. but that is of no consequence.. what model exactly is your airport.. A1xxx from the base please??
    What firmware level?
Does the ethernet connectivity light turn on, on the modem and the airport wan port?
The airport is setup in router mode.. ie dhcp and nat on the Network tab. And create a wireless network on the wireless tab. It is set to dhcp on the internet tab.. so that is all the setup that is required.. but the 6141 will need to be shut off for 30min or so to lose the previous connection and so the Airport can take the role of router.. power up the modem after 30min .. wait 2min then power up the airport. The public IP should be available on the WAN of the Airport.. open the summary page in the airport utility. If it fails then you need a different brand of router.. Apple is simply not compatible.

  • How do I get a Motorola SurfBoard SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem to work with my AirPort?

I just bought a Motorola SurfBoard SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem to replace the one Comcast was renting to me. My configuration is as follows:
Modem is wired via ethernet to the AirPort Time Capsule
Time capsule is wired to an iMac, a PC, and an Xbox 360
Time capsule is wireless broadcasting to connect various peripherals around the house (iPhones, consoles, printer, Macbook, etc)
Anyway, while the modem works great plugged straight into the iMac, we completely lose our internet connection (wired and wireless) if I plug the AirPort Time capsule into it.
Does anyone know if there is a conflict that I can disable on one of these devices? The airport utility was warning of a double NAT.

Did you power off the SB6141 for 20min before you change over from iMac to the Time Capsule.. this is required. (Test at 5min if you want).
Make sure the TC is set to dhcp on the internet tab.. and DHCP and NAT on the network tab.
Power up the modem.. wait a couple of min for it to settle down then plug in the TC.
No luck try longer times.. or ring comcast and ask them to reset the IP.
If your TC is tall one or running 7.6.4 firmware.. another problem may arise where the 6141 does not connect properly.. there is a problem between this modem in particular and the apple routers.
You can try using a crossover cable instead of ordinary patch cable or use a small 10/100 switch between them.. that will sometimes help.

  • Having trouble "extending" Airport Express to DOCSIS Motorola Surfboard

In 30 minutes of searching this forum, it is clear Bob Timmons is the man when it comes to Airport Expresses.
I had ATT DSL connected to 3 airport expresses (A1264) for streaming music in smaller apartment.
I'm now in a bigger rental home and want to extend the network.  After some tinkering, I can get the A1264 to "join my wireless" network but I can't get it to "extend."  When I choose those settings, I get the blinking amber light - and it will not work.
I'm connecting to a Motorola Surfboard DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem.  Can anyone help?
    Thanks
    Ron

If you are trying to extend the network wirelessly......Apple's extend a wireless network feature will only work with other Apple wireless routers.
To confirm, please see this excerpt from Apple's product literature on the AirPort Express:
Extend an existing Wi‑Fi network’s range.
If you already have a wireless network in your home and want to extend its range, AirPort Express can help. Just place it in range of your primary base station — an AirPort Extreme, AirPort Time Capsule, or another AirPort Express
    http://www.apple.com/airport-express/
If you have a Motorola modem/router providing your wireless network, the AirPort Express will not be able to extend that signal.

  • Linksys WTRG54 won't work with Motorola Surfboard

I just bought this Linksys WRT54G, and it won't connect to my Motorola Surfboard modem. I can connect to the router wirelessly from my Macbook, I just can't get online. I'm sure it's the router's problem because I can't even log in to the modem when I'm connected to the router. I checked all my connections repeatedly, tried updating the firmware, and many many power cycles. Also did a lot of googling and tried other solutions. Are they just not compatible with each other?
One thing is though, the very first time I hooked it up, it was working. Then I power cycled it and it won't work now.

Have you configured the Linksys to clone the MAC address on record with your ISP? Sometimes this is required by the ISP. I use Comcast, a Moto 6120, and a D-Link router, and had to do this.
If this is not relevant, perhaps you can provide the hardware version of your Linksys WRT54G, model of Moto Surfboard, and your ISP and general geographic location, in hopes someone can help.

  • Motorola SURFboard to AEBSg to AXn. Any known incompatibilities?

My home network is Time Warner Cable with ISP supplied Motorola SURFboard model SB5101 to Airport Extreme Base Station 802.11g via ethernet. I would like to add an Airport Express wirlessly to that setup. The AX I am looking at is Airport Extreme 802.11n originally released in March 2008. Apple is offereing this in the reburb store online. Are there any known incompatiblilities?
My networking "skills" are very basic .I would like to limit variables to user error if possible. Thanks for any help.

Then you want the AX to 'extend" the wireless network...since it does not provide any additional wireless coverage when it is configured to "join" a wireless network.
This would mean that both the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express would need to be used in what Apple calls a WDS setup. I've added the link for Apple's instructions on how to do this below.
    But, a note of caution.
This is a difficult configuration, even for experienced networking folks. I'm not saying that you won't be able to do this, but it is very easy to make a mistake and almost impossible to recover without having to reset the AirPorts back to factory default settings and then starting all over again.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4262
Follow the instructions in the link for using AirPort Utility 5.5.2 or later

  • Motorola surfboard, Time capsule  network problem

I have inadvertently reset my network settings which were previously working fine. The set up was a motorola surfboard 5100 connected to a time capsule via ethernet. Networked to the TC were a couple of MacBooks, and a couple of imacs and a printer all connected via airport. Telstra Saturn refuse support for networks setting or Mac and Mac support direct me to Telstra all to no avail.
I can get one computer networked by:
    - manually inputting the TCP/IP settings provided by Telstra into one computers network settings (IP address 203.97.101.47, router: 203.97.101.1)
    - and with what I recall were the previous settings for the manually configured Time Capsule (IP address 10.0.0.1, Router 10.0.0.2
    - the other Macs IP network settings I have set as 10.0.03/4/5 etc respectively
This set up only allows the one computer with the Telstra supplied network setting to get connected but not the other Macs or printer. They all connect over airport but not to the internet.
I have tried powering down both the TC and modem as well as setting the TC to share a public IP, distributing a range of IPs and bridge mode.
    Ha

I'm having trouble picking out your new replies from your last two messages.
The main problem with manual settings (as opposed to DHCP) is that the "other" device that a manually-configured device is connected to may refuse to honor those settings. You can tell a computer or router that it should have a particular IP address, but if the device at the other side of the connection doesn't believe that, things won't work.
Let's back up and start over. First, every time you change what's connected to your modem, you'll need to reset the modem to convince it to connect the the new device. The manual mentions a reset button on the back panel and that it can take 5 to 30 minutes for a reset to take effect.
Power down the Time Capsule. Connect your Mac to the modem with an Ethernet cable. Turn off AirPort on your Mac. Open the Network panel of System Preferences and select the Ethernet connection item. (Add one if it doesn't already exist.) Set "Configure IPv4" to "Using DHCP". See if the status is "connected". Note the IP address. Once everything is working the WAN IP address of the Time Capsule should be similar. Verify that you can access the Internet.
Now unplug the Mac and reset the modem. Apply power to the Time Capsule. Connect an Ethernet cable between your Mac and a LAN port of the Time Capsule. Launch AirPort Utility and put the Time Capsule into "manual setup" mode. In AirPort Utility's Internet panel, Internet Connection tab, set "Connect Using" to "Ethernet". In the Internet panel, TCP/IP tab, set "Configure IPv4" to "Using DHCP". In the Internet Connection tab set "Connection Sharing" to "Share a public IP address". Update the Time Capsule. Now connect another Ethernet cable from the modem to the WAN port of the Time Capsule. In AirPort Utility check the AirPort panel, Summary tab to see if the IP address is similar to what you saw on your Mac earlier. If that's what you see, try to access the Internet from your Mac. If that works, you're just about done.

  • Can't connect WRT54GL router to Motorola Surfboard cable modem SB6120

I can't connect my router (WRT54GL) to my new cable modem (Motorola Surfboard SB6120).
    Some info:
    1)  Cable modem works perfectly when connected directly to computer ethernet port
    2)  ISP is Optimum Online
    3)  Using Automatic DHCP setting on router
    4)  Using MAC cloning on router
    5)  I can access the router's admin screen from the PC
    6)  I can connect to the router wirelessly, but no internet access
    7)  I've tried powering down everything multiple times, still no internet access
    8)  I upgraded the router firmware to 4.30.14
    9)  The "link" light on the cable modem never lights up when connected to the router
    10)  This is very frustrating

    Hi

When the modem is connected directly to pc the link is lit up, just not when it's connected to router.
The internet light won't turn on as you need to plug something on the WAN port. And that should be the cable coming from the modem.
When you connected your pc directly to the modem, do you get internet access?

  • Motorola Surfboard SBG6590 installation cd says "Problem installing Adobe Air"

When I attempt to install the software which came on the installation cd for my Motorola Surfboard SBG6590, it gives the following message: "Problem installing Adobe Air. There was a problem installing Adobe Air". After I saw this message the first time, I went to Adobe's site and downloaded air from a browser and it said that air was successfully installed. When I reattempted to install the cd, it gave the same failure message about "Problem installing Adobe Air". I tried uninstalling Adobe Air and reinstalling and I still get the same problem. I have a mac OS x version 10.5.8. The version of air that I downloaded is 2.5.1 for MacOS.
