Motorola to Intel chip help

I have a Mac Mini (w/Tiger) and would like to go to either an Intel Mini or an Intel iMac. Can I assume that I will be unable to load my current apps like Photoshop, etc. but my iTunes and iPhoto library will transfer with no problem? Anything else I should be aware of? Thanks

you will be able to use any program you used with the old mini, but non-universal binary (intel) programs will open using Rosetta, which hogs your RAM so get extra of that

Yes.   I've found that works best.  Especially if the drive is external, since external connections are typically slower, and Spotlight loves to eat up space going back and forth.   Time Machine will eat up as much space as it can, and typically needs drives at least twice the size of the original hard drive that is being backed up, if being backed up in full.   So unfortunately there is a lot of empty space that is needed for smooth operation.

  • I have an iMac G5 isight (20" screen) Leopard OS 10.5.8 I do not have an intel chip. I am unable to open movie links on facebook using Adobe flash player. I called Adobe Systems and they said Adobe no longer supported computers that did not have intel chi

I have an iMac G5 (20 inch screen) i sight (no intel chip).Leopard OS 10.5.8. Recently I went on Facebook and tried to open a movie site someone had sent me on Facebook andwhen I tried to open the video on Facebook, I was told  I had to upgrade my Adobe Flash Player. i tried to do this, but turns out that Facebook is requiring folks to have an intel chip in order to view movies...this is outrageous!  Just think of all the folks in the world who have great running pre intel chip Apple computers. I called the Adobe Help line and was told that I really needed to buy a new computer....no thanks. How do I find a way to get a new version of Adobe for Facebook and youtube. I wish Apple could develop a way to have intel chips installed in the older computers. If you have any suggestions on this please let me know.
    Thanks, Sarah

Either get a screen cleaning cloth, or carefully us a slightly damp lint-free cloth and dry off with a dry link-=free cloth.
As to Flash Videos: I am in a similar same boat. I cannot watch flash videos on the BBC website or on BBC iPlayer, although all other flash videos (YouTube and FaceBook for example) are fine.
For reasons that passeth all understanding, they work with the PPC version of Firefox, called TenFourFoxG5.app, once you have anabled plug-ins, as it does not natively support Flash.
You can download TenFourFoxG5 from here:
    http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
Now for the intersting bit: TenFourFox, like Firefox, does not support most plug-ins. Unless you are prone to headaches (in which case don't) you can read about that here:
    http://code.google.com/p/tenfourfox/wiki/PluginsNoLongerSupported
    But there is a workaround!
Open TenFourFox and type in the address bar: about:config (no spaces) and click return. This gives you a warning that it might harm the application. Ignore that and click on 'I'll be careful, I promise' and you get the config file that you can edit - with great care.
    Look/search (scroll down) for: tenfourfox.plugins.enabled
Set it to true. (Double click it to toggle it)
Now close TenFourFox, open it again, and Flash will now work, as it now uses the plug-ins that Safari has stored.
I am using Flash 10.1.102.64 in TenFourFox and it works just fine.

  • I CAN'T INSTALL FINAL CUT PRO 3 ON MY NEW INTEL IMAC, HELP!!!

I'm trying to install FINAL CUT PRO 3 onto my new iMac but can't. It reads the disk but then says, "Original disk needed for install." I have the original disk, I own a registered copy of the program, so I'm stuck.

    Hi -
I believe Final Cut 5 is designed to run on a Power PC CPU machine, the current MacBooks use Intel chips - so the software will not install on your Intel based MacBook.
You can, however, upgrade from a full version of Final Cut 5 to Final Cut Studio 3 which contains the latest version of FCP, version 7 as well as Compressor, Color, Soundtrack Pro and Motion for $299 which is a steal as the full version for Final Cut Studio 3 is $999.
You only need the serial number of the full version (non-academic or non-upgrade version) to do the FCS 3 upgrade - you don't need to have FCP 5 loaded on your machine to make the upgrade work.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can a 2006 iMac with an Intel chip run OS X Mavericks?

My daughter has a 2006 iMac with an Intel chip and 3 gigs of RAM. She's been told it can't run Mavericks. Is this true? Or, is there something missing from her configuration we can add to enable Mavericks? Thanks!

Hi, Ralph. That's very helpful. I did look and discovered that Apple lists my daughter's iMac from 2006 as not able to run Mavericks.
I'll be looking at it later, when I have it in front of me, and I'm going to look for EFI firmware, and at least the latest OS it can run. But it looks like a new Mac is in her future, considering her web use includes streaming video. And because the security updates issue for older Macs is a concern.
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi David,
I got a gigadesign 1.467 single processor upgrade for my tired 'ol G4 466 about a year ago. I paid around $450 at the time and now they have a 1.8 single for $299!
I have zero bad things to say about the upgrade. Easy to install (although a little nerve wracking!) and it's been running hassle free ever since. It's given me the juice to take advantage of Space Designer as well as keeping up with my CPU sucking Native Instruments software.
I did plenty of research as far as compatibility before comitting to the upgrade and have had zero issues.
Obviously a new computer is the next step but that processor upgrade has kept me chugging along enough to stay in the game thus far.

  • Install intel chip on older mac?

I have an older imac, pre-Intel chip, and I want to know if I can install the Intel chip in it to make it capable of supporting Leopard operating system and the new Intel chip applications.
    Thanks for your help!

No, you cannot install an intel chip.
But you can install Leopard, just not Snow Leopard.

  • Does lack of "Architecture" mean "no intel Chip"?

I am running a back-up computer which is a G5 tower - PowPC.  I am a teacher and it runs a "Smart Board"for me.  My students decided to attack my smart board with about ten sets of finger instructions at one time.  Got the ? in folder after I re-booted it.   Took unit to Genius Bar and they re-installed 10.5.8.
I now am re-installing software.  I am getting a message on several items that I have a lack of "Architecture" to install software.  Examples of stoppage:
    Microsoft 2011, Firefox and others.
Question "does lack of architecture" mean no intel chip?  Can anyone reccommend a good data retrieval software I might look into to find all my missing data on the hard drive inside my G5.  If not, I'm OK I have a back-up on another drive I would just like the same software I had before.
    Thank you for any help,
    RHWood

Long Story Short...when an Application states "This application isn's supported on this Architecture" That just basically means (In laymans terms) that that particular Application isn't available for that specific type of Processor that is in your System. (In your case the PowerPC G5 Chip) But when the G5 ins't Supported its highly likely that PowerPC Chipsin general (G3s and G4s alike) aren't supported either. Sorry to be the bear of bad news.
However as mentioned before earlier in the post, there may be older versions of those Applications. First question I have to ask: Do you have a Time Machine Backup? (This is one of those situations where I must put my 2¢ In. I think of Time Machine Backups like condoms, better to have them and not need them then to need them and not have them) If you DO have a Time Machine Backup, my advice to you would be to Start Up the Mac from the Mac OS X Install DVD (Restart holding the C key (via Wired Keyboard) until you see the gear below the Apple Logo appear on screen) and From the "Utilities" Menu in the Menu Bar, select, Restore System From Time Machine Backup. Follow onscreen instructions and presto. (Btw this can take several hours depending on how much Data you have on your System, so be sure to do this either before or after school hours)
Third (I know what a Smart Board is I was taught with them in the Air Force, we used them to learn our trades) Since this is a school (or an Educational Establishment of some sort) Im sure some of the I.T. Support People in that building have the original Install DVDs (The software had to get on that Mac one way or another) So you know there is an older version and I doubt SMART is going to just put their software out there for everybody on Planet Earth to download, so I would recommend talking to them. And when you do, and everything is sorted out, get yourself some condoms. lmao (If you didnt catch that I meant get yourself a nice reliable external HDD (of equal size of the drive "Macintosh HD" That you are going to back up or larger (preferably)) and give Time Machine a go. Cheers!

  • Compiling for Intel chip

I heard that the compiling of Final Cut Pro and Final Cut Express might not have been done yet for the Intel chip. Is this true?

In addition to searching this forum, the Top Questions page linked off the Final Cut Studio page is pretty helpful. There's also a link directly to the Pro Applications Universal Crossgrade right on that same Final Cut Studio page.

  • CS4 and (no) Intel Chip

I have MOS 10.4.11, but bought my iMac just before the Intel chip arrived. I also have CS4 to install, but don't know if I should do so without the Intel chip, seemingly a requirement. Will appreciate any help offered.
    Ginnie

    Ginnie,
I've successfully installed the Master Collection on my G5 tower running Mac OS X v10.4.11, except for the component apps that are not compatible. During the auto install, the installer detected that I did not have an Intel CPU or an up-to-date graphics card. So apps like Premiere and AfterEffects weren't installed, and some Photoshop features don't work, and I'll wait until I get a new Mac tower.

  • Installing new intel chip

I bought my iBook in May of 2005, it's a PowerPC but I want to know if I am eligable for an upgrade? Does anyone know this or know where I can find out. I have looked forever on the apple.ca website, it is not to be found. Thanks for your help in advance!

I have a power pc g4 that just had a hard drive and logic board replaced. Would Apple have replaced it with Intel chips instead of the one they used prior to the change?
No. If they would have they would have had to install the Intel version of the Mac OS and you would quickly discover that most of you applications didn't function or functioned slowly (through Rosetta).

Sheepshaver works. I have it running on my mac.
You will need a Mac OS 9.04 (or lower version) install CD to get it working.

  • Macs with intel chips query

Help please I have been holding out for the Mac mini to be upgraded to the intel chip which is now available but I am faced with a dilema. My son who will be princple user has special needs and most of his apps run on system 9 which I have found out today will not run under Rosetta. Most of his software will however run on windows. Does anyone know if its possible to boot an intel mac to run windows or if it might be available in the future. I dont want to turn to windows if possible as he has always got on well with his ageing G3 running OS9 and our G4 running OS 10.4

You can run emulator on Intel Core Mac's. I am aware that Microsoft and Apple differ in vision of VirtualPC and am not aware wheather Rosetta supports VirtualPC emulator.
However, there is shareware iEmulator wchich works fine with Windows, DOS, Linux emulation on Mac's. I had brief exchange with one of their engineers about supporting Intel based Mac's in terms of realasing Universal version of iEmulator. They are preping for that and they should do that soon.
Now I find any PC emulation very slow on Mac' I have tried Windows 98, Windows 2000 and SUSE Linux 10. All of them work and even get some choppy audio (emulated Soundblaster), but if one means Windows gaming then I would drop emulation of any type. Gaming requires fast native environment.
BTW emulators like iEmulator support Internet so you can do browsing and e-mailing with Windows tools.
If just running program for Windows is what you want on Mac then you may give it try (bring-your-own-windows):
    http://www.iemulator.com
But I wouls not say that without fast CPU this is usable solution.
Now, I already have Intel Core Duo Mac mini. It is not lightning fast. My PC with Celeron D 2.8 that built myself is faster... and it was cheaper. Mac Mini is just like a laptop/notebook without keyboard, mouse and monitor. It has much better organized, really user fiendly system... called... Mac OS X which makes it worth buing and using as primary computer. I use my PC only as a backup since computing world is crazy and to many it is MS-Windows synonym... stupidly enough.

  • Re I-Movie.  "Communication Error" is what I get when I try and send a clip from my Sony camera to the IMovie program in my IMAC 2008 Intel Chips.  The IMovie program has worked well for several years - up to now.  What has gone wrong?

Re I-MOVIE.  I am getting a "Communication Error" when I try and send a clip to the IMovie
program in my IMAC 2008 Intel Chip computer.  This is the first time in 3 years that the
program has not worked.  What has gone wrong?

    Hi
Have no idea - But if it is a new problem with exactly the same kind of material that was previously used. Then my trouble shooting guide might help.
    If You
    • used a new Camera - file codec might be a sort that don't work
    • Your main hard disk might get too filled up
    Else try
    Trouble
When iMovie doesn't work as intended this can be due to a lot of reasons
    • iMovie Pref files got corrupted - trash it/they and iMovie makes new and error free one's
    • Creating a new User-Account and log into this - forces iMovie to create all pref. files new and error free
    • Event or Project got corrupted - try to make a copy and repair
    • a codec is used that doesn't work
    • problem in iMovie Cache folder - trash Cache.mov and Cache.plist
    • version miss match of QuickTime Player / iMovie / iDVD
    • preferences are wrong - Repair Preferences
    • other hard disk problem - Repair Hard Disk (Disk Util tool - but start Mac from ext HD or DVD)
    • External hard disks - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work with Video
( UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most other things - but not for Video )
    • USB-flash-memories do not work
    • Net-work connected hard disks - do not work
    • iPhoto Library got problems - let iPhoto select another one or repair it. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie.
    This You do by
    _ close iPhoto
    _ on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
_ now select all five options presented
_ WAIT a long long time
    • free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk to low (<1Gb) - I never go under 25Gb free space for SD-Video (4-5 times more for HD)
    • external devices interferes - turn off Mac - disconnect all of them and - Start up again and re-try
    • GarageBand fix - start GB - play a few notes - Close it again and now try iMovie
    • Screen must be set to million-colors
    • Third-party plug-ins doesn't work OK
    • Run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac
    • Let Your Mac be turned on during one night. At about midnight there is a set of maintenance programs that runs and tidying up. This might help
    • Turn off Your Mac - and disconnect Mains - for about 20-30 minutes - at least this resets the FireWire port.
    • In QuickTime - DivX, 3ivx codec, Flip4Mac, Perian etc - might be problematic - temporarily move them out and re-try
(I deleted the file "3ivxVideoCodec.component" located in Mac HD/Library/Quicktime and this resolved my issue.)
    buenrodri wrote
I solved the problem by removing the file: 3ivxVideoCodec.component. after that, up-dated iMovie runs ok.
Last resort: Trash all of iMovie and re-install it
