MOTU 828 mk II & I/O mixing 5.1 surround & stereo

Hello all
Is anyone aware of a link for implimentation of MOTU 828 mkII I/O's using Logic 9? The 828 mkII manual doesn't make mention of how to assign Logic Inputs or Outputs in relation to the MOTU channels.
I'm setting up a MOTU 828 Firewire Mk II after my Mk I just went down.  The Mk I  input & output channels seemed so obvious to set up in Logic I/O prefs ..... 5.1 surround came out of Logic Audio Channel Outputs 1-6  then via the Firewire went into the 828 mk 1 and out of the corresponding channels   .... and ordinary stereo came out of Logic via channels 1 & 2 into 1 & 2 of the 828 mk 1..... monitoring and bouncing was simple and obvious.
However I can't sort out a basic output routing in the 828 mk 2 for what should be straight forward?
PLEASE CAN ANYONE POINT ME TO AN AUDIO ROUTING SET UP FOR USING LOGIC WITH SURROUND & STANDARD STEREO WITH A MOTU 828 mk 2 ...... IT SEEMS LIKE KINDERGARTEN STUFF BUT I CAN'T FIND ANY INFO ANYWHERE?
I've got a happy surround mix coming out of all six Logic channels and playing back out of the 828 analogue outs with Logic Prefs I/O Assignments like this:
Basic - 5.1 (ITU 775)
Left OUTPUT 3
Right OUTPUT 4
L surround OUTPUT 5
R surround OUTPUT 6
Centre OUTPUT 7
LFE OUTPUT 8
However I haven't tried a 5.1 bounce yet as am not sure what on earth ends up in the resulting 6 audio files (SO confusing !)
My Mac OSX stereo sound is playing out of the 828 by choosing OSX System Prefs Sound - "MOTU 828" ... but the idea of choosing Outputs 3 & 4 to bounce a standard stereo audio file out of Logic seems totally nuts.
However ... I don't seem to be able to bounce a standard stereo mix ? (even though I can hear it playback in the L & R monitors of my 5.1 studio monitors ...... the resulting sound fle has no sound in it (either WAV or MP3?)
Please can any one help !!!??  I got my knickers in a major twist?
Is there a Logic Channel Re- Routing guide somewhere for using both 5.1 & stereo with a 828mk2 without the necessaity to change standard stereo Logic outputs to 3 & 4?
Best wishes
Richard

GUYS - THIS IS THE SILLY SIMPLE FIX ......
Keep everything routed in Logic outputs as normal:-
L - 1
R - 2
Ls -3
Rs -4
C - 5
LFE - 6
So bounce everything as normal including standard stereo outs.
Make the MOTU audio setup:-
DEFAULT STEREO OUTPUT - MAIN OUT 1-2
Take the 828 mk2 outputs to your surround monitors;
L comes out of MAIN OUT 1
R comes out of MAIN OUT 2
Ls comes out of ANALOGUE OUT 1
Rs comes out of ANALOGUE OUT 2
C comes out of ANALOGUE OUT 3
LFE comes out of ANALOGUE OUT 4
DONE ....... you can carry on as if nothing happened!
Thanks for looking at this ..... sorry for being a nincompoop !
Best
Richard
PS NOT GOOD MOTU - this info isn't anywhere to be found  - just my trial and error

  • Logic + motu 828 + analog mixer

So I have a Motu 828 MK1 and wanna buy a small mixer (behringer EURORACK UB802 or Tapco Mix 100 ).
But I little confused about audio routing in Logic Express 7.2
So signal from motu outs 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 will be connected to inputs 1, 2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 on mixer.
And then master out from mixer will be return to motu inputs 1,2 for bouncing.
    How to setup Logic environment?
    Thanks.

Is your MIDI interface going through a hub? Is the MC on dedicated ports? Have you rebuilt defaults in the Control Surfaces submenu? Have you tried another MIDI interface? If you delete everything in Control Surface setup, does Logic automatically install the MC next time you boot Logic?

  • Recording thru rear inputs on motu 828 mk2

i have logic 7.1.1 with a motu 828 mk2 sound card. i am going out my turntables, into a mixer, and then into the rear inputs(1+2 analog) on the back of the motu. i see the levels lighting up(above 1+2 as well as the main) and the speakers attached to the motu are playing the music from the turntables.
i cant get logic to monitor or record any of the sound from the card. how would i get the input from 1 to go to its own track in logic, while the input from 2 would go to a seperate track?
    thanks for any help.

this happens to me from time to time. I have level and sound on the track, I hit record and nothing gets recorded. I have discovered this happen when I have another track selected other than the track I am recording on. This may be a bug in 7.1.1. Make sure you have the track you are recording to, highlighted (selected).

  • Latency recording live keyboard through MOTU 828

I am getting some latency playing a Korg SG1 Sampling Grand live in stereo into a MOTU 828 connected by Firewire to a G4 powerbook - not many tracks of audio running.
The monitor mix out of the MOTU and into a modest desk with headphones has a slight latency during recording.
Apart from plugging a pair of headphones directly into the MOTU what general advice would anyone have for reducing latency in Logic? Are there any settings etc I should change?
    many thanks in advance

If you need to get Live recording in Logic with 828 and software monitoring active look the following settings:
I advice you to don't use compressors on the Buss in the live recording phase and set PDC to
This allow you to use Logic compressors and EQ on the channel inserts without adding latency. (and , off course, any Virtual instruments)
With PDC set to "all" you must use the Logic 8 "Low Latency Mode"! (I still prefer to avoid the PDC set to "All" in Live MIDI recording phase.)
You can also try to reduce the Sample buffer to 128... (but the CPU-power request should be too much for your G4).
You can also set software monitoring to OFF and use the Motu with its zero latency monitoring...
In order to use Virtual Synth you must use software monitoring... the 256k buffer is very fast with my Motu 828MKII and it works great... remember just to don't use PDC set to ALL!
    PS:
    Are you on 828 MK2?
I'm waiting for the new MK3 because it is a great interface for Live recording because inclde Compressors Reverbs and EQ that can be used indipendently from software monitoring of your DAW.... (my opinion, it is the best interface that you can buy at this time... higest top professional quality with a killer price )

  • Motu 828 MKIII firewire connection problem

    Hello !
I am a Belgian user (sorry for my english) of the Motu 828 MKIII Firewire, when I was on Windows evreythings gone ok, but  I have a big problem since I switched to Mac !
When I plug my motu with a 6pin-9pin firewire cable to my macBook pro « mid 2012 » it is not always recognized by the drivers.
Sometimes it is recognized, but if I disconnect and then reconnect it no longer works.
It does not appear in the "Motu audio setup". In the "Report System » of mac, it detects an "unknown device".
I tried another cable but it does not change, yet my firewire port works well (I tried with an extern HardDrive) !!
I also tried to uninstall and reinstall the drivers, it does not change!
The firmware is 1.06, the drivers is 1.6 58373 and I’m running OSX 10.9 (mavericks).
There’s no new drivers on website...
    Please help me !

You can select which physical outputs Logic designates as your "Stereo Output" in Audio Preferences->IO Assignments. Unfortunately you cannot rename the IO label for Output 1-2 - this is permanently greyed out.
Note also that Logic that Logic has some buggy routing behavior around Output 1-2 as it assumes this is your main stereo output pair. If you want to use outputs 1 and 2 as mono outputs you will run into all sorts of trouble.
@the blind eye - you have a secondary issue in that the "Main" outputs of your MOTU are actually the mix bus of the interface itself, these are not outputs that are directly accessible by Logic.

  • Recording thousands of tapes using motu 828 and ST Pro

I have St and a Motu 828 firewire but older model to the actual. I have connected a tape deck to inputs 3 and 4 of the motu and I am trying to record tapes 24 bit and 48 Khz to further treat them but I cannot get the channels into ST audio File. Can someone help me out??

I wouldn't recommend using FCP for this type of recording. It doesn't like "on the fly" recording as much as it does batch digitizing of a source. STP would be much better for this. But, I wouldn't recommend firewire capture with STP! You have a couple of options. One, unless you get in to more serious recording, the audio input on the Mac is sufficient to use as an input. The problem is it's a mini plug and needs to be adapted. Most "pro" devoces are either 1/4", RCA, or XLR. This isn't a big deal. Adapters are found at Radio Shack and online. The other problem with this is most "pro" mics requre phantom power (+48v) to power the microphone. You can't just plug them into the computer. I use a small mixer for this. I have a 6 input Tapco mixer. Behringer, Samson, Mackie, and Tapco all make small mixers that will give you good flexibility and quality for about $100. They also have phantom power. Again, you'd just need to adapt the output to the computer's mini plug.
The other option would be to buy an audio card. M-Audio (www.midiman.com) offers several choices depending on need and budget. The 2496 card is sufficient for general purpose use. A couple of advantages to audio cards . . . they can give you better quality than the built in audio input. Not always. Depends on what you buy. They take some of the processing work from the computer. They have more flexible inputs and outputs. One disadvantage . . . they require a driver and software for routing. It can be a little confusing to use.
There are also USB options. The same website has products in this category. I have no direct experience with USB devices so I can't speak to their quality and reliability. My own preference would be the mixer or the audio card.
    Hope this helps!

  • I have horribly low volume from my audio instruments via MOTU 828

I am really frustrated. The MOTU 828 is a soundcard that has inputs for microphone ( I use 1/4" plug but also has XLR). Obvioiusly it accomodates other electrical instruments that I crank through an amp first (volume on 10) and connect via the amp's headset jack.
NO matter what I plug in the volume is horribly low in Garage band track. THe motu 828 has "input gain" for each input t and that is cranked to 10. Then in GB I have the "track mixer volume" cranked up (and the volume in "Track Info" is grayed out).
When I shout into the microphone Track equalizer barely moves and I can barely hear myself. Then I make a recording which is ever so slightly audible on playback but the "sound waves" don't even register in the region - it looks like a flatline.
One thing that is interesting is that when I connect my keyboard to the Motu 828 +via the headphone (audio) jack+ it works great and I can easily turn up the volume in the track "mixer" or on the keyboard and get it to equalize and peak in the red.
Why am I unable to record my microphone or my guitar amp (through the 1/4" headphone jack) at a decent level?

    Mhurst08,
Are you talking about the Headset jack on your Amp or on the computer?
In my case: I use a XLR Male/Female Cable through my Audio Interface.
    I go through (*Mic Instrument 1 Plug*) optional in my case... if i want to activate phantom on interface;
make sure *Input Volume* for that channel is up, along with *Inputs/Playback Mixer Knob* and Headphone volume, if using... not sure if your interface contains these volume knobs.
In term of GB in TRACK click New TRACK, then click *REAL INSTRUMENT* then CREATE.
In *GB Preferences* go to (Audio/Midi) in both *Audio Output* and *Audio Input* choose( The name of your interface if listed) in your case... Motu 828. if not, again in both try
Audio output(Built-in out) and Audio input(System Settings) which plays back through computer speakers... the first config., plays through interface.
Under Track Mixer you must click the circular dot button in front of the symbols: Mute, solo, lock, etc., buttons.
Go to (*Track Info Pane*) section and in *Input Source* choose( Mono 1) if you're also using your guitar at the same time you have to go back to *New Track* and take the same steps for Real instrum., and then choose Mono 2, and so on.
Last steps: Monitor can be *on or off* try both; underneath Monitor, is your *Recording Level* may sure it's turned up... not to high with Monitor ON... will get feedback.
You can also check the *Master Slider Volume* next to *LCD( measure, time counter, etc).* Oh, by the way your 1/4" cable should work.
See if this solve the mystery!

  • MOTU 828 mk ll not being recognized by Windows XP in Bootcamp

    Hi All,
I have been pulling my hair out over this - and believe me I don't have much to spare! I cannot seem to get Windows to see my MOTU 828 mk ll audio interface.
I have Boot Camp installed with Windows XP service pack 2, updated to service pack 3. I ran the snow leopard driver installers again after I did the service pack 3 upgrade. I've installed and uninstalled the MOTU firewire/USB driver package over and over again, and rebooted ad nauseum, all without success.
I then tried upgrading the firewire drivers to the AVT FirePackage, thinking they might be more robust than Microsoft's. Reinstalled the MOTY drivers, etc - no change. Needless to say, the 828 mk ll runs perfectly under OS X, so I know there's nothing wrong with the unit, cables, or FW port on my tower.
Any ideas or insights would be greatly appreciated.
    Eli

    Hi Eli,
i´m actually facing the same problems using a traveler, no problems on OS 10.6 no detection on WIN XP.
I contacted Motu Tech links and Matthew a service technican wrote me that,
    Hi Michael,
There is a setting in the Windows registry that controls the data rate between the FireWire adapter and connected devices. Adjusting this setting might resolve the problem you're experiencing. Please follow these steps to adjust this value in the Windows registry. Make sure to power off your Traveler before hand.
    1. In the Start menu, choose Control Panel > System > Hardware. Click the Device Manager button.
    2. In the Device Manager, expand the section titled IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers. Right-click on the FireWire adapter device to which the audio interface is connected, and choose Properties.
    3. In the Properties window, select the Details tab. In the Property dropdown menu, select Device Instance ID.
    4. In the Value field, you will see a string of letters and numbers that is similar to the following:
    PCI\VEN104C&DEV_8020&SUBSYS_00D81028&REV00\4&19FD8D60&0&60F0
The second and third parts of this string are significant. The portion of the string between the two backslashes (\) is the hardware ID for the FireWire adapter. The portion of the string following the final backslash is the instance ID. Keep the Properties window open or save these values.
    5. In the Start menu, choose Run. Type regedit at the command prompt. Press return to launch the Registry Editor.
    6. In the Registry Editor, navigate to this registry subkey using the folder hierarchy at the left side of the window:
    HKEYLOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetEnumPCIhardware_IDinstanceID
The hardware_ID and instance_ID are the values from step 4 (Device Manager > FireWire adapter properties > Details > Device Instance ID).
    7. When you have reached this subkey, select Device Parameters. In the right side of the window, you may see one or more defined values. If you see a value named SidSpeed, continue to step 8. If the SidSpeed value does not exist in the right pane after you click the Device Parameters subkey, you will need to create it. To do this, open the Edit menu and choose New > DWORD Value. Type SidSpeed for the value's name, and then press return.
    8. Right-click on SidSpeed, and select Modify. In the value data field, enter 3, and then click OK.
    9. Close the Registry Editor program, and then restart the computer. After the computer has restarted, log in to Windows and test the problem again.
    Hope this will do,
    greetings, Michael

  • How can i use adat inputs thru my motu 828 in logic pro7

    hey guys,
i really need help with this one. i'm new to logic and can't figure out how to use my additional inputs from adat in logic. it just shows me 12 inputs and outputs, which are just the i/o from motu 828 interface, not including the otpical once.
    thanks so much!!!!

i have it enabled. before i was using digital performer 4.61 and i was able to see and use all of my i/o from my motu interface. as a matter of fact i still have dp on my hard drive and when it still has all the inputs there, but not in logic. i'm duing some recordings tomorrow and i need all of my inputs to be working.

  • Firewire disconnects using motu 828 mkii and Mackie ONYX 1620i. Why?

Having replaced my trusted MOTU 828 mkii as it kept disconnecting itself and needed rebooting including removal and replacement of the firewire lead, I have encounted the very same problem with the Mackie ONYX 1620i.
Interestingly it happened recently when I powered up a guitar amp in the same room the other day so I called my electrician friend to check out all the power outlets/sockets on the studio main. His comments were "no issues".
    - As there are no other gemlins associated to the power I put it down as coincidence but had to rule it out.
I have tried a multiple of firewire leads and had the same results.
The only firewire device that seems ok is a Behringer FCA 202!!!! (Embarrasing!) - I use this for stereo output only (to the same active monitors) and swap FW lead and Output Jacks when using each device.
This is with Macbook Pro (2010), Logic Studio 9, iTunes, etc. (all purchased products and same problem with ALL audio software).
Using Lion but was an issue with previous OSX.
    Certainly a head scratcher.
    Anyone had any similar issues?

    That's interesting. Thanks Benjy.
Please be sure to update here if you do encounter anything similar.
I cannot afford to replace my 'live' desk as well as another soundcard.
Plus, I really don't think I should have to - Mackie and MOTU are established and reputable device manufacturers and this seems to be an Apple issue.
    Apple?
Anyone else sncountered similar and found a resolution after advice from apple?

  • Using more than one motu 828

does anyone use more than one motu 828 for 16 x DA outputs with logic pro - if so how?

Thanks to you both for the helpful comments.
The Digimax FS does look like a good basic device for this capability. I found an 828 mkII on the local Craigslist for a decent price, though. I had saved some pennies, so I just picked it up and now have two of those units.
Now that I know it's possible (thanks to your input), I'll just have to learn the best way to do it. I'm sure it's not rocket science. My first decision is whether to chain the second 828 mkII by FireWire to the first one. That's my best guess, since I think using the ADAT/optical in would limit data to 8 tracks. (?)
    Cheers,
    Jeff

  • MOTU 828 MKII input into Logic Pro

I posted about this earlier, but I think I can simplify/clarify:
I'm using 8 channels of ADAT pre-amp input connected to my MOTU 828 MKII.
Cuemix (MOTU's monitoring software) shows that all inputs are functioning properly.
But when I try to choose an input channel in Logic, I have a problem:
All 8 channels come through inputs 13 & 14 in Logic. Logic will allow me to select inputs 13 through 20 (they're not grayed out), but there's no audio coming to inputs 15 through 20. And, yes, I'm pressing "record" to enable the track.
I should be able to assign inputs as follows:
    ADAT 1 = Input 13
    ADAT 2 = Input 14
    ADAT 3 = Input 15
    ADAT 4 = Input 16
    ADAT 5 = Input 17
    ADAT 6 = Input 18
    ADAT 7 = Input 19
    ADAT 8 = Input 20
Any ideas on what's happening here?

The reason it is 2 out is because Logic doesn't recognise the names of the inputs. They are simply numbered. So, the front 2 inputs on the MOTU are inputs 1 and 2 in Logic. So the next input in Logic is 3, but the next input on the MOTU is on the back..... which (rear of MOTU) is input 1..... and on it goes.
    Logic 4, Motu (rear)2.
This got me at first until I realised that Logics input chanels were just numbered straight through, not differentiating between front, rear, analog, ADAT etc.... I think inputs 11 to 18 in Logic correspond to ADAT 1-8 on MOTU.

  • Simultaneous multi track recording in Logic Pro7 using MOTU 828 mk2

I would like to use the eight separate audio inputs on my MOTU 828 and connect them directly in line to eight channel strips/tracks in Logic Pro 7 v 7.2.1.  (presumably through the firewire interface).  I can't find any documentation in either the Logic or MOTU manuals to tell me how to do it.  I'm sure someone out there knows - please tell me!

this happens to me from time to time. I have level and sound on the track, I hit record and nothing gets recorded. I have discovered this happen when I have another track selected other than the track I am recording on. This may be a bug in 7.1.1. Make sure you have the track you are recording to, highlighted (selected).

  • Logic losing contact with MOTU 828 (Mk I)

Ever since installing Logic 7.1, Once or twice a session, Logic stops talking to my Motu 828 (Mk I). I'll be playing something back, or getting ready to record, and the Motu just goes quiet - no signal indicators. If I restart the Motu, the sound comes back, so not the biggest problem in the world, but sure is annoying. I've gotten rid of, then re-installed the Motu drivers, and that doesn't seem to help.
There have been a few posts about new 828s dropping out, but nothing as intermittent as this. Any ideas?
    Dual 1.25 G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Logic 7.1 MOTU 828 Mk I

I had this problem with my Motu 828 (mk I) and my previous Imac G4 (700 mhz). Sometimes it could dropout 3-4 times during a session, sometimes it did not happen for several weeks. Buying a new firewirecable instead of the one Motu supplied made the problem be less frequent.
I came to the conclusion that it was probably a defect firewireconnection on my Imac G4.
Since I bought my new Imac G5 in november the dropouts has disappered.
Suggestion: test your 828 with another mac to see if the problems go away.

  • How to install MOTU 828 drivers in Lion?

I'm trying to use my Motu 828 with my iMac, OS 10.7.2 --
When I run the installer (downloaded from MOTU, dated

What's the official right way to install these kind of drivers in Lion?
    Thanks

Ach, never mind -- I think I got it -- redid the entire thing and responded to the challenge prompt from Lion and seems good to go.
