MOTU Ultralite Mk 3 vs. Presonus Firestudio Project instead of M-Audio

After buying an M-Audio FastTrack Ultra 8R, with a hardware problem, and the bad drivers that Logic Forum members warned me about, I'm having to return the unit. Loads of people are having problems with the drivers...
So, I've managed to narrow down the selection to: MOTU Ultralite Mk 3 and the Presonus Firestudio. Both seem to be well made, have great drivers and be mac friendly. I'm currently using an old 17" Powerbook G4, but will upgrade to a MacBook Pro, and want to make sure that the firewire chips on the new MacBook Pro won't create problems with the units.
Any experience with these, and feedback would be appreciated.
Cheers!

IMHO, you'll just be spending more money for the motu. I own a Firestudio Project. I think it's great. Straight forward and easy to use. Rivals FW interfaces costing 2 and 3 times as much. Many people look at the price and think because it's less expensive it must not be good. As far as the ins and outs, I believe the outs on the Kontrol unit are balanced. You could go direct in with no probs...unless you're planning on using GR3 as plug. Not sure if you can use the motu AND the Kontrol usb in at the same time. That'd be for someone more qualified to answer. Good luck with your setup.

  • Problems with Presonus Firestudio and Logic

I am having problems with compatability with my brand new Presonus Firestudio recording interface and Logic pro 8. I am new to logic but not to home recording, and i cant understand what might be the problem. When i use the firestudio with garageband it works easily. In the garageband sound preferences there are input AND output channels that the user can define. (i.e. you can set your input channels to come from the firestudio while the output channels go to the computer speakers or headphone jacks or whatever you define it as).
From what i have seen in logic, there is only one option for your audio settings. when in preferences and under audio, there is a "device" setting in which you can define your audio device. Wheather this is input AND output for the program, i do not know. but the problem i am experiencing is that whenever i choose the firepod as the input device, no sound from logic will play from the speakers whatsoever. My first thought was that maybe ouput was going straight to the firestudio, but after plugging headphones into it this also did not work. Has anyone had success getting their firestudio to work in logic? if so let me know what settings you had to use, and how you got to moniter your input from from the firestudio via your computer.
    p.s.
another WIERD problem i have run into, is that if i shut off the firestudio while logic is open, alot of times it will shut down my whole computer. i have never heard of this happening. what am i doing wrong?
    thanks!

ah, I was hoping to find my solution here, but alas the thread is gone...
I recently bought a Macbook running Leopard, and am having difficulties with my PreSonus Firestudio Project thru Logic and Mainstage. I can get audio input and output just fine, but there's a ton of distortion/crackle. Kickstarting the sample rate seems to clear it up for a minute or two, but then the crackle comes back. The recorded tracks sound clean if I unplug the Firestudio, so apparently it's only in the monitoring stage?
On the PreSonus board, they're claiming it's Apple who needs to update drivers for Leopard; PreSonus says the "Firestudio Project is Leopard compatible."

  • Logic won't recognize Firestudio Project

I just bought a presonus firestudio project to hookup to my 10.5.3 leopard Mac Pro (2.4Ghz quad 2gb ram). I installed the necessary Universal Control, however, my logic does not recognize the firestudio. My logic studio worked 100% fine through firewire to my previous firebox, though it does not recognize the firewire to firestudio. The firestudio does show a blue light which means it IS synced, however, logic does not recognize it as an audio device.

Hi Christopher . Need to know more, Does your interface has been setup in the Audio Midi Setup properly? If yes does itunes use it? Did you install the latest driver from Presonus? If yes check the firmware of your interface, i know mine had to be updated to work with the new driver.
Otherwise i would suggest you to contact presonus. I remember once i had an issue with an update and the interface, and they solve it by telling me to reinstall the software after to have deleted some files attribuate to Presonus application and driver....
    Good Luck.

  • PROBLEM WITH MACBOOK PRO 2.4 Dual Core and MOTU Ultralite

    Hello,
I Recently bought a macbook pro to have for my Live appearance.
I also had a motu Ultralite which worked super well with my Pc and with the macbook the first days
One day i had to play live in a club so i connect my soundcard but the macbook wont recognize it coz i cant see the popup window that i get everytime i connect my motu on it...i rebooted the soundcard then the laptop nothing...i started sweating coz my live performance would start in 20 minutes noting came out of it so i cancelled the gig for the moment and played a Dj set instead.
When i got home i connected the card again and was working perfectly till yesterday..So i thought there was something wrong with the Power in the Venue or something like that.
Yesterday i connected the soundcard and again does the same any other firewire device was working properly.
I searched online and saw there is alot of people having the same issue but no solution.can someone tell WHY sometimes it works and sometimes doesnt??its very stupid to have 2 machines with a cost of 2500 euro almost and they dont work well together
    Op system: Leopard 10.5.7
    Motu ultralite Mk2 firmware: 1.15
    motu ultralite driver 1.4.21
    Thank you in advance

Popping in to say that I have now a fully functional Ultralite (mk3) under OS X 10.5.8 on my Macbook.
I have found that people who have upgraded the firmware to 1.15 were having problems (according to the MOTU site this upgrade isn't actually meant for the mk3 anyways) with Leopard (maybe Snow Leopard too?) and needed the 1.00 version of the firmware.
Using the drivers supplied on the MOTU CD, the device would not appear when connected to the Macbook. However, removing these from the system prior to downloading the latest MOTU Universal driver from their website seems to have solved it.
Now after installing the universal drivers from the website the device works without any problems (driver 1.4.23 of MOTU Audio Setup). Hope this helps someone

With the Lion it is essentially unnecessary to resort to external driver disks. What's more, most of those disks are incompatible with the OS and should not be used. The system already carries a wide variety of printer description files (aka PPDs, which is what modern printing systems use as "drivers") for a lot of brands. And there was an HP printer update just two days ago.
Just checked in mine and did indeed find that the HP OfficeJet 6200 Series, with or without Fax, is covered with the latest update.
So just go thru the motions of creating a proper printer instance:
Make sure the Mac "sees" the printer on the network.
System Preferences / Print & Scan
Click on the + button on the left column
Select the appropriate type of printer, will use IP for the rest of this
Select HP Jetdirect - Socket, default for HP network printers
Type the IP address or look it up
Name the printer for easy identification on the print dialog
Let the Mac identify the printer model or manually choose the driver
    Click Add.
Once the instance pops up in the list, can click on Options & Supplies for further config.

  • Imac late 2012 problems with motu ultralite mkIII through thunderbolt to firewire

first - hi @all users here in the forum.
i have a really curious problem with my audio configuration. at first i must say the audio-config. with my macbook pro (mid 2010) and my imac (early 2008) works fine without problems by using firewire.
but not on my imac (late 2012). there is a static, high frequently noise on my monitors. and i don't find the reason for that problem. i have delete alle the audio drivers and make a fresh install. reset the nvram and pram with holding the power key and so on. two weeks ago i have contacted apple care and send the imac to the next service provider. first i think for a defect power-supply. but the provider located only a defect ram. they change it and send me the imac back.  but nothing has changed. if i heard about the defect ram from the provider i know this couldn't never ever the reason for that problem.
i hope anyone can help a little bit by this problem...thank you.
    here is my hardware setup:
    - imac late 2012,"27 3.2ghz core i5 processor, 8 gb ram, 1tb fusion drive (osx 10.8.5)
-> connected over the thunderbolt to firewire adapter to
       - the motu ultralite mkiii
-> connected to the yamaha hs80 with balanced cables

the static, high frequently noise on the right is stronger than on the left.

  • Trying to record multiple tracks (24) in Garageband with 3 presonus firestudio devices daisy-chained together.

Please help !! I can record multiple tracks (8) on a single presonus firestudio, but now I'm trying to expand the number of tracks to 24 by daisy-chaining three firestudio devices.
The three units will sync up properly, and Garageband detects all of the input channels, but the recording doesn't pick up the input signals for the 2nd or 3rd device. It only picks up the signals from the first device. I read the manual and daisy-chained the devices by serial number (lowest to highest).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • MOTU Ultralite Not Recognized in New MBP

    Greetings!
I have a new MBP, with an original Motu Ultralite. I loaded the latest MOTU drivers for OS 10.6. I can't get the MBP to see the device anywhere. I tried a reinstall, and still nothing. Never had a problem before on previous system...
I have the MOTU plugged into my external drive, and then into my Firewire 800 on the MBP. Others do it this way, with no problem, and power doesn't seem to be the issue. I also plugged the MOTU directly into the MBP, with no change. I have checked System Profiler, and Audi/MIDI setup. I've tried everything I know how to do, to no avail...
Could it be the new drivers? I know the previous drivers for 10.3 worked fine. Do I need to uninstall the new drivers and reinstall the old drivers? Is there something I"m missing? I've been researching this for hours, with no fix...
Thanks in advance for any guidance...
    Blessings,

    Just an update...
I just turned on my computer and the MOTU suddenly mounted! While I don't have any profound explanation, I discovered my hard drive has to be powered on, in order for the MBP to find the MOTU. If I turn off the hard drive, the MOTU doesn't mount, but it will still power up. I had tried both the MOTU and hard drive in this same configuration earlier in the day, with no success...
While I wasn't initially using power to the hard drive or the MOTU, (running both bus-powered) I tried plugging in the power to the MOTU and shutting off the hard drive to see what would happen. The MOTU wouldn't mount.
It appears the hard drive needs to be on to pass along whatever signal mounts the MOTU. Yet, the MOTU powers up just fine without the hard drive being turned on. Seems to me it should mount if it powers up...
It would seem I only have a few options:
    1. Leave the hard drive on when using the MOTU. (Not practical)
    2. Purchase a firewire ExpressCard (which I believe requires its own power?)
    3. Plug the MOTU into the MBP first, and daisy chain the hard drive to the second port in the MOTU. This would limit my FW 800 hard drive use to FW 400.
    Any thoughts or other workarounds?
    Blessings,

  • Motu Ultralite with Mainstage - No output form Mic 2

I plug the 'guitar' into the front Mic 1 socket and all works and sounds great.
I plug into Mic 2 in the back of the motu Ultralite and I get no sound, yet the meters on the LCD panel are showing input volume. Out is not happening from Mic 2.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Gary

OK, after looking at the setup stuff on the Ultralite it is actually a mixer, so stuff that is going to the inputs is getting routed to main outputs by the Cuemix software for the interface.
When you set the output of the strip on Mainstage to another set of outputs it is routing the softwares output to the 3-4 outputs but the mixer inside the Ultralite is routing the input signals (likely unprocessed) back to the outputs.
It looks like if you turn the software faders for the Main out mix for your guitar inputs all the way down Mainstage will see the inputs but the wont be routed to the Main output for monitoring...

  • Motu Ultralite not working in PowerMac G5 any OS

I have a Motu Ultralite that is recognized in Audio Desk and Reason but does not produce any sound. When used as an output for iTunes it produces sound for about 1:45 then turnes to noise. I have tried most OS's from 10.4.1 to 10.4.10 with pretty much the same resuolts. I am using the latest Motu drivers. The unit works on other Macs but not mine. I have a PCI graphics card not the AGP one that comes with the MAC. I am using 4.5 gigs of RAM. The firewire ports on the computer seem to be ok when moving data to and from an external drive. Motu support could was no help at all. I am posting here because I hope to reach readers who use audio interface cards. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   4 G RAM, PCI Video Card

Hey, this is a tricky one. May I suggest trying the following:
    1. Disconnect all other Firewire devices
    - to remove the possibility of something causing a conflict
    2. Try a different Firewire cable
    - may be subtly damaged
    3. If possible try another Firewire audio interface
    - will prove that your Mac and it's Firewire ports are ok
    - it's possible that when you're using a hard drive that if there are read/write errors OS X is doing error correction so you're not seeing any noticeable difference in performance, whereas with audio, it's a continuous stream and errors that are occurring you're hearing as noise
    4. If possible try a different Ultralite
    - will prove that your current ultralite is faulty
Basically, try to isolate whether the issue is with the Ultralite or your Mac.

I get no help from MOTU who are saying that there's no problem with the hardware.
I have received a second MOTU Ultralite interface. Same problem.

  • MOTU Ultralite looses its FW connection at regular intervals

    Hello Friends
here is a real frustrating problem !
I have the MOTU Ultralite mK3 FW soundcard. First when I plug the FW cable and the computer is off I get a regular churning noise from my MAC
When the MAC is on; no churning noise , but the connection seems to go on an off status , LCD flickers on and off at regular intervals , the backlite leds go up and down the unit goes beserk !! though I might add it initializes fine when first powered on
I have tried all the basic trouble shooting , 'changing cables , pluging different FW devices these all work !!!!)
I even plugged the ULTRALITE on my PC computer , and guess what !! it works fine !! no problemo !!!*
I have tried to contact MOTU but there tech service is god **** awful , it has been a month now.
I think maybe the 10.5 os upgrade might be the reason , because I did have the unit working when I first got it !
    Any help is appreviated !!!

    hi friends
thanks for your insight !! however problem remains the same even after the suggestions
yes trying to' isolate' the problem , but here it is !!!
the MOTU Unit works no problem on my PC computer , I have tried (even got a brand new FW cable) Plugging Other FW units work fine on my G5 .
The MOTU works fine with the power supply , but as soon as the FW is plugged , it freaks out !!
Here is a video link of exactly how the MOTU behaves

  • MBP and motu ultralite NOT working. Firewire.

Hi, I bought a macbook pro 2.5 with a HD of 200G 7200rpm and I am trying to connect the motu Ultralite. I tried this audio interface in other laptops and desktops (PC) and it does work with no problem.
I am running Leopard 10.5.2 and the motu does not behaves quite ok.
Also tried with windows XP with bootcamp, and it does not work at all. It is recognized, but when I open the properties and load the ASIO drivers it says the MOTO has been disconnected and suggests to turn it on again (which obviously is already connected and powered on)
I read, this can be related to firewire port. Anybody with similar problem?
Any help or suggestion would be much appreciated.
    Thank you all.

I've had problems with my MOTU Traveler and OSX ever since purchasing my MBP.
A factory reset of the audio device has been motu's fix which works for a little while but
the problem of the device not being recognized always returns.
I've found that if i unplug then re-insert the firewire cable while the audio device is powered on it
is sometimes recognized but not always.
I do not experience this problem when using DAW software which addresses the hardware directly,
only when using software that relies on the system to address the audio hardware ie; (quicktime, itunes... you get the idea). Works fine on my powerbook G4.
I've read these issues may be related to apples choice of firewire chipset in the new machines?

  • Anyone USing a MOTU Ultralite MKIII w/ Cue FX ?

    Hi All !
I am brand new to both the MAC and digital recording as of last week.
I purchased my first Audio interface on Saturday a MOTU Ultralite MKIII.
I was wondering if anyone else was using this interface with Garageband. I'm looking to hopefully find some more resources on the device specific to using Cue FX with Garageband. I did try a search, but it didn't bring up anything specific
    Thanks !!

there's still no sound coming out of it, cuemix fx keeps "stalling", and it's pointless to have it as an audio interface as it's completely unusable.
STAY AWAY FROM MOTU FIREWIRE WITH BOOTCAMP
Some of Apple's Bootcamp/PC drivers are pretty weak, I did a Bootcamp setup for a friend a few weeks ago and we ended up going to Microsoft's site and downloading drivers for the Macbook's common hardware, namely the Realtek audio device and the Broadcom wireless driver. The new drivers were much better than what Apple has included with Bootcamp.
If you can find out what Firewire chip is on the Mac you should be able to download and install drivers that work properly.
Also, WinXP_Pro is the OS to use.
