Mount AirPort Disk using AFP

I am having some trouble mounting my AirPort Disk using AFP. I can navigate to "Network" using the Finder and select my AirPort and then mount the desired volume. However, if I attempt to use "Connect to Server" in the Finder's "Go" menu, I run into a problem. By my (possibly flawed) reasoning, I should be able to enter in afp://airportName/volumeName in the server address field and it should connect. If I enter in smb://airportName/volumeName, it works. But trying the same thing with AFP doesn't work. However, if I try afp://10.0.1.1/volumeName it does work. I find this a little perplexing. Any suggestions? Have I just got the AFP URL syntax wrong?
Thanks in advance for any help!

I am building a script that uses rsync to syncronize some files between my laptop and my external drive. If I mount the drive manually through Network, I can syncronize files properly. My understanding is that the mechanism behind the mounting process in this case is AFP. If I mount the drive manually through "Connect to Server" in the "Go" menu of the Finder using "smb://airportName/volumeName", then the drive mounts but when I syncronize, the modification dates for the files all get set to today's date and time. This doesn't happen when I mount through Network in the Finder because AFP "understands" HFS+ while smb "doesn't understand" HFS+.
It turns out that I can mount the drive using AFP by using "afp://airportName.local/volumeName" according to another user. I will try that tonight. I still need to understand why the Applescript mentioned in my post above doesn't mount the drive to the Finder, yet renders it accessible from Terminal.

  • Can't copy large files to AirPort Disk Using Windows 7

    Hi Everyone,
I'm positng because I'm unable to copy large files to an AirPort Disk using Windows 7.  I have the following setup.
    AirPort Extreme:
    - Firmware version: 7.6.1
    - Airport disks secured by password
    - No guest access allowed
    - Airport Disk Preferences:
      - Automatically discover airport disks is enabled
      - Show Airport Disks in the system tray is enabled
    External Drive:
    - Western Digital 500 GB MyBook External Drive connected to Airport Extreme thru USB
    - FAT32 Formated
    Computers:
    - 2 Toshiba Proteges, Both with 4GB RAM
    - Both have Windows 7 Home Premium with Service Pack 1, 64-bit version
    - (Sorry we have no MacBooks at home, just iPhones and iPods!)
    Airport Utility:
    - Version  5.6.1
    Airport Disk Preferences Utility:
    - Version  1.5.5.3
A week ago, I was able to copy over large files (videos <4GB in size) to the drive.  Now, when I try to copy over these large files to the drive, the copy dialog box hangs.  I receive a message stating that Windows is calculating the size, but then it doesn't copy over.  Windows then gives me a message that it is unable to copy to the drive.  When I test the drive connection by copying a small text file over, it copies over quickly and seamlessly.  This problem occurs on both computers.
I am able to do the following with the drive connection:
    - Read files
    - Change file names
    - Copy files from the drive to my computer
    - See the contents of drive
I've tried all the combinations of the following with no success:
    - Turning off Windows Search
    - Downgrading the firmware
    - Reconfiguring wireless adapter
    - Rebooting computer
    - Rebooting wireless router
    - Rebooting external drive
The drive seems to be working fine except for when I want to copy <2GB files over to the drive.  Does anyone have a solution that seems to work?
    Thanks!

I'm happy to report that, after reformatting the drive to HFS+ (aka Mac OS Extended), there are no problems writing/copying large or small files to the AirDisk drive.  I'm also happy to report that I am copying to the drive at a rate of roughly 4MB/s.
As I mentioned earlier, the only catch is that I am unable to plug the external drive directly into a Windows computer via the USB port as Windows is unable to read HFS+ formatted drives.  (I can, however, plug the drive into a Mac computer as they can read HFS+ formatted drives.  The only problem is that I don't own any Macs at this time!  LOL!)
You're probably wondering how I formatted the external drive to HFS+ since I don't own any Macs.  (Windows only allows you to format drives in exFAT, FAT, NTFS and the like.)  That is a good question.  Basically, I downloaded an open source formatting tool called, Gparted, which allows you to format any USB drive to any major file format system.  Since Gparted is an open source tool, it is a little cumbersome to use. Once you figure out how to use it, it is a cinch to format the drive to HFS+.  (Of course, an easier method would be to borrow a friend's mac, plug the drive into their mac, and format it to HFS+ using their mac.)
For a step-by-step guide on how to solve this problem, see the steps below:
    1) Backup all data from external drive
        a) Fortunately, I have a 1TB ultraportable USB drive which has enough space to backup all data on the drive
    2) Format the external drive to HFS+ using one of the methods below
        a) Plug it into a Mac and format it
         b) Use Gparted (free) to format it
    3) Plug the drive back into the Airport Extreme
    4) Start copying files over to your networked drive!
I hope this helps you! Cheers!

  • IPod 4G always mounts for disk use when Mac wakes from sleep

My 4G iPod is always mounting for disk use when my Mac (10.4.8, Dual 1.8 GHz G5) wakes from sleep, even though the settings for the iPod has "enable disk use" unselected. When I launch iTunes (latest version) the iPod promptly is unmounted. I have restored factory settings, I have reinstalled the computer's OS and iTunes with it.
What is going on and how can I make it normal?
    Dual 1.8 GHz G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   iTunes 7.1, iPod 4G 20GB

    UPDATE:
I have started to turn off Bluetooth at night before I put my computer to sleep. I HAVE NOT HAD THE FIREWIRE RANDOM DISMOUNT PROBLEM SINCE. I do not know if this is a freak coincidence -- but so far, so much the better for my firewire drive.
Hope this helps someone else down the line... eh hem...

  • Mounting Airport Disk - It's Only Showing Up as Shared Folder??

I have a USB drive attached to the Airport Extreme Base Station. Right now it's only listed as a shared folder, and I'm at a loss.
In order to see it in Finder, I have to select the AEBS under the Shared tab. Once I do this I see my hard drive, but it's listed as a shared folder.
I really want to see the hard drive as a mounted network drive, but can't figure out how to do it.
Please let me know if anyone has some thoughts. Thank you.

I think your airport disk is working perfectly. The problem here is that you are used to Tiger and expect that once anything is mounted it appears on your desktop. This behavior has been changed in Leopard - the network drive no longer appears on the desktop - this is intentional. As I tried to explain before the airport disk IS automatically mounted by OSX. It's mount point is actually /Volumes (just like it was in Tiger). The only difference is that instead of creating an alias on the desktop - the alias is placed under the shared folders tab in finder.
I already showed you how to create a link on the desktop if that is what you really want.
I don't understand exactly what the problem you are having is??? You can browse all of the files on your airport disk right???

  • Finder freeze when re-mounting Airport Disk

I can not Force Quit the Finder, beachball spinning.
I read the log in Console, it has something to do with the Airport Disk mounting, attached in our Airport Extreme.
It's been 4 forced shutdown (holding power button) since Mountain Lion installed in this MBA 2012 11".
On Lion, it was no error.
On the other side. My MBP late 2008 is acting normal in the same network with the same Airport Disk. Also Mountain Lion installed.
    What to do?

    Hi Tylerwr-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards.
Out of curiosity, does each drive have a unique name? Did you format the drive to Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?
Take a look at this setup guide and see if anything helps: AirPort Base Station and Network Setup Guide

  • ITunes 8.1 (Win) + 5G iPod: disk use mode now always on

After recently updating to iTunes 8.1.0.52 (Win XP Pro SP3), my 5th Gen. iPod always mounts in disk use mode no matter how I have set the "Enable Disk Use" prompt in iTunes.
At mount, I always see a new drive letter assignment with the default iPod disk folders (Calendar, Contacts, Notes) visible and writable. The normally hidden iPod_Control folder also is visible on my system due to my OS settings. I have not tested its writability.
This drive assignment is visible only during the initial iPod sync, after which it disappears.
It does not reappear on subsequent syncs within a given "mounted session," but does reappear if I disconnect the iPod (always manually, regardless of disk use setting) and then reattach the dock adapter cable.
Always, the drive assignment persists only so long as the sync is active.
The iPod itself is at software version 1.3, and has been since that version was launched in 2008(?).
Naturally, I suspect a software problem in iTunes 8.1.
The ability to mount an unauthorized drive can potentially give rise to serious security issues, especially when there appears to exist no option NOT to mount the drive. Thus, I mention it here for the record.

Hey there, I'm having the exact same problem! Very annoying - have you found a solution by any chance?
I've restored my ipod and reset everything I can but since I updated the software continuous mode is kaput......Cheers

  • Accessing Airport Disk with OS 9

Does anyone know how I can access a network airport disk using OS 9?

You can't. To access the drive you need Mac OS X v10.4.8 or later.

  • Anyone find a way to use an airport disk for Time Machine?

Apple says it is not possible ( http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306833 ). Yet I have seen some posts of people who claim they are doing it. How?

Here's the workaround that has been posted ...
(NOTE: Caution!!! There is a reason Apple did not include Air Disk support for Time Machine in the current release of Leopard. I would strongly discourage implementing any workarounds, especially if the data you are backing up is critical to you. However, if you're just curious to see if it is possible, then proceed with caution.)
Here's a workaround for the Airport disk problem that may or may not work for you:
    1) disconnect airport disk and plug into computer as a USB drive directly.
    2) Set up time machine to use this volume.
    3) In terminal cd to volume "cd /Volume/HDD"
    4) In terminal "touch .com.apple.timemachine.supported" this will create an invisible file.
    5) In terminal "sudo chown root:admin .com.apple.timemachine.supported"
    6) In terminal "sudo chmod 1775 .com.apple.timemachine.supported"
    7) In terminal "ls -l -a" the .com.apple.timemachine.supported file should be -rwxrwxr-t
    8) eject disk, unplug from mac, plug into Airport.
    9) mount at mac using connect to server in finder (command k) and afp://airportname.local./HDname
    10) see if time machine now sees the drive and tries to use it.

  • The backup disk image "/Volumes/AirPort Disk-1/Angelo's MacBook Pro.sparsebundle" is already in use.

It worked fine. Now I get the same crap as everyone else lucky me!
The backup disk image “/Volumes/AirPort Disk-1/Angelo’s MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use.

Hi Bob there's an eject button next to the Time Capsule in Finder. Also when I press the select disk button is it suppose to show 2 disks for Time Capsule because it shows 2. Also when the backup was taking place I opened up Time Machine preferences to watch it doing the backup. Could this also have caused it? Also when I pressed the eject button Time Machine was showing up under the Time Capsule but now it disappeared. I read that if it's mounted it will cause this error.

  • AirPort Disks - how do I show them in Menu Bar and Mount them

I have two hard drives connected, through a USB hub, to my AirPort Extreme Base Station. The AirPort Disk Utility has options to "+Automatically discover AirPort Disks+" and +"Show AirPort Disks in the menu bar+". I have checked both options.
Neither of my Base Station-connected disks shows up in the menu bar, and neither is automatically connected. They both appear in Airport Utility. They do not appear in Disk Utility.
I cannot figure out how to connect to/mount these disks.
    Thanks for any help.

I think you are describing a feature of the Airport Disk Utility.
I stopped using this when Leopard came out.
Instead I have my airport shared director in the finder sidebar.
Click on it ... and it mounts.

  • Mount TC using AFP on Linux

    Hi there,
Can anyone tell me if it's possible to [auto]mount my newly purchased TC on Linux (any RedHat based system) using AFP? I can mount the using samba like this:
    +mount.cifs //10.0.11.10/Data /your-mount-point -o password=YourPassWord+
but I rather like it using AFP. I'm running NetaTalk on the Linux box and afpd is already configured.Any comment/direction from any one? Thanks in advance though. Cheers!!!

Isn't any one using Linux at all? Cheers!!!

  • Unable to access shared USB Disks on Airport Extreme using Leopard

I have a Mac Book Pro, iMac and Mac Mini all running Leopard with all of the latest updates. I use an Airport Extreme (also patched to the latest updates), and it has a 100 GB USB drive attached.
When I was running OS X Tiger, all of my devices could connect to the shared USB drive and store files. Now that I've upgraded all of my platforms to Leopard, none of them can access the USB drive. If I try to open the disk using Finder I get the following error:
"The operation cannot be completed because the original item for "Shared Disk 1" cannot be found."
Anyone have a clue as to how to fix this?
    Thanks...

  • Even though I have LCD font smoothing disabled, Mountain Lion still uses it in PDF views, Safari's location bar, Mail's message view, and the dialogs for mounting encrypted disk images.

Even though I have LCD font smoothing disabled, Mountain Lion still uses it in PDF views, Safari’s location bar, Mail’s message view, and the dialogs for mounting encrypted disk images. Is there any solution to this problem? Also diabled the Smoothing in the SystemPrefs and also via Terminal. Font smoothing is still there. Very annoying, especially in PDF attachments in Apple Mail.

Try feeding Safari a user-defined CSS file with font-smoothing tweaks (including none). The filename and its filesystem location are arbitrary. Use your favorite coding editor.
Safari > Preferences > Advanced > Style Sheet:
Here is an example with all elements uncommented. Pick the one that works best for your Safari viewing and comment out the others:

  • Airport Express - Use as a remote disk?

I have recently purchased a macbook air, and currently have an imac, too.
I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to using WANs LANs WDS's etc etc, I have a basic config at present which is the following
-Ext. HDD 1TB connected to imac (all files are on there, movies, music, documents etc etc, appropriately partitioned for reference / easy file finding.
-MacBook Air (which can connect via wifi to my iMac to find files etc, using the iMac as a remote disk
However, What this facility doesn't allow me to do is it doesn't let me access the Files / Directories on the External HDD connected to my iMac via USB.
Essentially, what I wanted to create was a single access point for all files, folders, documents that are on my External HDD, thus not having a real need to mess about with usb sticks, emails, disconnecting external HDD's etc etc.
I know you can connect a USB device to the airport to use the airport as a 'switch/router' for file access, however, I was wondering if there is a way to configure the airpot so that I can also access this HDD outside of the home, for example, when I'm at university.
Essentially, I want to create (in the home) a single access point to which I can Read / Write / Edit files and store them in one single location.
One further, additional thing I am interested in is can the Airport express be set up so that a partition of the Ext HDD has a copy of OS X on it and can it then be used as a remote desktop feature, wherever I am, whatever I'm doing?
I realise I have asked a lot of questions for a novice, however, as I now have a macbook i'd like to take advantage of all of the facilities where I can.
Sorry if this Q has already been answered, couldn't seem to find anything.
    Thanks!

84 views... no reply. This is about as useful as a turd in a **** pot. Anyway, I found out how to do it myself by using extensive google searches.
It can be accessed using the 'back to my mac' facility.
Took me a few days to figure it out - enable back to my mac on all Mac's and then set up 'share this dis' using apple ID.... enter the apple ID and status went green - succesfully connected to the apple service so i can access it as a VPN.
Shame out of the 84 people, not one could answer......

  • Ayone used Intego Personal Backup with Leopard and an Airport Disk

I have been very successfully using Intego's Personal Backup program with OSX 10.4.10 on an intel iMac and a MacbookPro with an Iomega 750GB hard drive linked to an Airport Extreme. I've set the computers to automatically switch on nightly (via energy saver) 5 minutes before the Intego backup script is set to run. The script runs in the background and automatically logs on to the Airport Disk and selects the backup folder. After finishing the backup the script then quits the program and shutsdown the computer. It's very convenient and neat as it only backsup files that have changed and they are full usable copies rather than incremental backups.
Has anyone tried this using Leopard? Could this be a potential solution to the lack of Time Machine being used with Airport Disks?

    I've tried it, without success.
I have a clean install of Leopard. I bought a new Airport Extreme and Iomega UltraMax 1TB drive to go with Leopard, so this part of the setup is all new to me. I have been using Personal Backup, without problem, for ages.
What I find is that when I select the Airport Disk as the destination drive, the Spinning Beachball of Death starts and I have to Force Quit Personal Backup. A real shame as I really wanted to use the Airport Disk as a common disk between my iMac and iBook, and Personal Backup seemed the obvious way to get the iMac files on to the Airport Disk (the iBook only needs read-only access).
If anyone gets this going, I'd love to find out how.
