Mount ASA 5585x on 2-post rack?

Is it possible to mount the ASA 5585x on a 2-post rack?

It is POSSIBLE but not recommended.
It's designed for a 4-post installation, using either the slide or fixed rail kit and mounting to all four posts. That's what's shown in the installation guide.
If it were my ASA at US$100,000+per unit, I'd want it to be securely mounted.

  • Installing Xserve on a 2 post rack

I need an advise on how to mount the xserve on a 2 post rack.
    Please help

I've had two xserves on a shelf in a telco rack and it supported it just fine, though I admit it's not ideal. As far as the xserves being too deep, I guess it just depends on the position of the rack in the room. The G4 and G5 xserves did come with mounting kits for a two post rack which is how most of my xserves are mounted.
We use a two post adapter from racksolutions.com that work out great for our few Dell servers the rest of our xserves that I installed with the four post kit and cable management kit since I will need to access them more often.
It's unfortunate that the Apple RAID and the new intel Xserves don't adapt to the two post adapter because Apple's mounting kit's rail extensions are too long and run into the telco rack in the middle.
The previous xserves extension attached to the rear of the xserve and were much shorter. They work great with the two post adapter. I do understand it's a different type of rail kit but I'd like Apple to consider those of us that have to use a two post rack. I hope there is a different kind of adapter that is compatible with the new xserve mounting kit.

  • Xserve rack kit won't fit in 6 post rack

We received out G5 xserve today, and i was able to install the Square holed rack kit without any problems.
However... I couldn't fit the xserve trough the middle.
It took a little research, but it seems that apple's square holed rack kit will not in any possible way fit straight into a 6 post rack mounting system because of the thickness of the black bars.
The reason for this can be demonstrated from here :
    http://www.macusersgroup.org/pdffiles/Greg_Sharp_XServe_Rail_KitProblem.pdf
The " ] " Shaped steel is touching the middle post, and causing the attached rack kit to ever so slightly fold inward.
This in turn would require the xserve to squeeze trough about 2-3 millimeters extra, which, simply put... will not fit.
I'm currently considdering taking a hammer, and simply flattening out the rack kit so that it'd fit properly, however i'm wondering why apple has created the kit to these specifications, and whether anyone else has run into this problem yet.
I guess it's a warning to new users as well, don't get a 6 post rank, get a 4 post one.
The old G4 Xserve with it's rack is much smaller on the sides and fits perfectly
The new G5 one is a "lot" thicker on the sides,, it won't fit without custom modifications to either the kit or the rack itself.

Ah yes, it's the Intel version.
    http://www.apple.com/xserve/
Most recent model, supplied with OSX 10.5 external rack kit.
The previous model we already have installed has the lid attachment (which fits fine).
The model we got today came with the correct attachment kit, and the rack has square holes so that's not the problem.
We got 2 windows servers, and 1 other mac-xserve parked in the rack so far.
Our rack has 6 posts rather than what most images display as using 4 posts. This way it supports a secure and stable environment for full length servers, as well as shorter cases such as a router.
The .pdf is more to show the shape of the kit, we got both servers, and the one I'm talking about is displayed on page 3, which is indeed the intel version as you pointed out.
The issue lies in the shape of the kit, which due to the plates being " ] [ " shaped, rather than " | | " shaped, refuses to fit properly between the 2 center poles of the mounting rack, as it causes these to push slightly inward and thus constraints the Xserve from sliding in neatly.
If you wish i could draw a sketch to show the issue.

  • Redundant etherchannels for ASA 5585X

Hi there ,  We have procured 2 ASA 5585X units for Active / Standby setup . In the interim we will go with etherchannelling 1 Gig links to upstream 6513 swtiches (non VSS).  Can I have this configuration for resiliency.
Etherchannel from ASA Primary - Switch 1 & Switch 2
Etherchannel from ASA Standby - Switch 1 & Switch 2
    or
Etherchannel from ASA Primary - Switch 1
Etherchannel from ASA Standby - Switch 2
( Failover links between the Firewalls are already configured )
Currently I am reviewing which would be the best way to configure redundancies to upstream switches. Appreciate any suggestions
    Thanks

The delay is not in the failover. The delay is in the traffic flowing through the 6513's now take a different path. I assume you are trunking your 6513's together, and thus that's how you're dual-homing devices to your 6500's and connecting them to same VLAN's?
I've run into this issue many times. Are there active SVI's on the switches, or are the active SVI's on the firewalls themselves (meaning, are you trunking the VLAN's to the firewalls)?
One way of handling this is to put your VLAN SVI's in HSRP between the 6513's, and then create routed links to your Firewalls (utilizing OSPF or EIGRP). That way your routes will change dynamically (almost instantly) with the failure of a switch or a firewall. This way your next hop is covered both directions.

  • Etherchannel support for ASA 5585X

Hi there , Just trying to find out which all versions of ASA 5585X can support etherchannel features .
    Thanks
    Prabs

    Hi,
To my understanding any ASA (except ASA5505) from 8.4(1) onwards can use EthernetChannel
    Quote from Cisco document
Interface FeaturesEtherChannel support (ASA 5510 and higher)You can configure up to 48 802.3ad EtherChannels of eight active interfaces each.Note You cannot use interfaces on the 4GE SSM, including the integrated 4GE SSM in slot 1 on the ASA 5550, as part of an EtherChannel. We introduced the following commands: channel-group, lacp port-priority, interface port-channel, lacp max-bundle, port-channel min-bundle, port-channel load-balance, lacp system-priority, clear lacp counters, show lacp, show port-channel.We introduced or modified the following screens:Configuration > Device Setup > InterfacesConfiguration > Device Setup > Interfaces > Add/Edit EtherChannel InterfaceConfiguration > Device Setup > Interfaces > Add/Edit InterfaceConfiguration > Device Setup > EtherChannel

  • ASA 5585X Clustering

I have two ASA 5585X-SSP20 need to Cluster config. I am little confused about ASA to Core Switch and Server Firm Switch Connectivity. In cluster mode if we config master asa two 10G port as an ether-channel then others cluster member same port config as a same ether-channel.So four port in two asa work in single ether-channel. If this right then my diagram is correct or wrong. Plz  help me.

    Hi,
yes, technically you could run two SSP20's with all 4 10g ports in the same spanned etherchannel as a "firewall on a stick".
If you look in the cluster configuration guide you'll see that the CCL (Cluster Control Link) needs to be sized the same as the data links so if you don't add any extra modules to your SSP20 firewalls you'll end up with 1x 10g for data and 1x 10g for CCL on each physical firewall.
We currently have this setup in our environment; each SSP20 firewall is connected to a Nexus 7K switch where one 10G port is used for CCL and one 10G port is setup as a trunk for all inbound/outbound traffic to/from the firewall.
    Hope this helps!

  • ASA 5585X in L2 trans. mode drops (ASP) fragm. IPv4 UDP multicast

    Hello Community,
it seems there are problems with dropped fragmented IPv4 UDP Multicast traffice on an ASA 5585X platform running ver. 8.4(6)5. The following sample topology has been used for the verification scenario:
    MC src and rcv
    (XChariot)
    |
    -----C4503---------------ASA5585X-L2mode-----------IPSEC-Appl.------WAN----------Remote Site with (S,G) (10.10.4.156,225.1.2.154) (XChariot)
    |
    MC src and rcv
    (XChariot)
    Test 1  (S,G) (10.10.4.156,225.1.2.154) sends UDP with a UDP length of 1341
    (Trace "WAN-IF_capture_225.1.2.154_no-frag" and
    output "L2FW-not_fragmented"
The traffic passes through the Transparent mode ASA without any problems.
Test2 (S,G) (10.10.4.156,225.1.2.154) sends UDP with a UDP length of 3441 resulting in fragmentation.
This traffic and unfortunately it is the same for the real application is drop by the ASA. The two ASP drops counters for "
Dst MAC L2 Lookup Failed" and "invalid-udp-length" are increasing in a realtion of  3(DstMAC):1(invalid udp).
The file"L2FW-frag_IPv4_UDP_MC_ASPdrops" shows first the capture on the WAN and then the captures on the ASP drops. In addition the three traces in pcap format.
    Any idea?
Thank you in advance for you contribution.

    Hello Community,
the following combination solved our problem for now, upgrade to ASA OS 9.1.3 (asa913-2-smp-k8.bin) and the change from virtual reassembly (default) to hardware reassembly -> global-cfg -> fragment reassembly full [interface].
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/command-reference/f2.html#wp2019322
Perhaps further test will be made with using lower interim versions.

  • Threaded hole rack kit in a square hole four post rack?

Had a bit of confusion when ordering and ended up with the threaded hole rack kit for the XServe, but we have a four post square hole rack. Anyone else done this? Do I need to order a whole new kit? (in the instructions it just looks like one little space is different, but no idea how to get one of those). should we just try anyway?
    Thanks,
    Russ

Most square-hole racks use 'cage nuts' - small inserts that you lock into the square hole to give a threaded back into which you can screw standard rack screws.
All my racks are threaded, so I've only ever ordered threaded rails (the cage nuts drive me nuts (no pun intended) and while square holes may be easier for equipment that's specifically designed for them I don't have enough such equipment to justify the PITA that cage nuts are).
Either way, I don't see why the cage nuts shouldn't work for the XServe Threaded Rail Kit. You should be able to get cage nuts from your rack vendor or here

  • ASA 5585x reload by self

    Dear,
I have Cisco ASA 5585 x, its working normally from two years ago, but before two month something strange start happened, its reloaded suddenly, and after week again happened and continue but in different times.
what its the causes of make FW reload by himself ?

A spontaneous firewall reload is most often related to a software bug in my experience. There is usually a crashinfo file generated which can be analyzed by the Cisco TAC.
You need to open a Service Request with the TAC to have them analyze the issue.

  • 4500X Included Mounting Wings or Brackets

Our environment had been purchasing the 4500X-16 switches to run as campus core switches before I joined the team.  I recently discovered that the shipped mounting wings cannot be flipped around or installed on the 4500X to allow for a rear-mount or center-mount installation on a two-post rack.  I can only mount the switch to the front of a two-post rack.  This results in the back of the 4500X hanging at an angle in the two-post rack because of the weight of the power supplies at the back of the switch.   There are no other kits shipped with the switch to do a center-mount or rear-mount installation of the switch and I have had to improvise with metal shelves to have the switch sit properly in the rack.   Has anybody else had problems with the mounting wings?   Are there options available to allow for a center-mount or rear-mount installation of the 4500X in a two-post rack?
You can see the attached picture to see how the switches hang at an angle because of the weight.   I had two 4500X switches in my server cabinet that can only be installed in this fashion with the provided mounting wings....

I've seen the same thing - even when using four properly secured bolts with the front-only ears.
There's an kit you can buy that was originally created for use with the 4900 family (but will also work with the 4500-X) for a center mounting option. It's mentioned in Table 7 of the 4500-X Installation notes and described in detail here.

  • ASA5585 - which rack mount?

    Sadly dissappointed in the documentation...
I would think that one of these parts would be the rack kit used when eliminating the slide rails to fit the 5585 in a narrow rack as described in the hardware installation guide ( http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/security/asa/hw/maintenance/5585guide/5585Xhw/procedures.html#79288 )
Rack-Mounting the Chassis Using the Fixed Rack Mount
If you are not able to use the slide rail kit in your rack installation, an optional fixed rack mount solution is available. You can install fixed front and rear rack mount brackets on the ASA 5585-X so that you can easily mount it in a rack.
OK, that is what I want, but what part is it? Is it one of the three below? Is it something else?
    ASA5585-RAILS=
    ASA 5585 Rail kit
    ASA5585-REAR-RACK=
ASA 5585-X Rear Rack Mounts (1 pair)
    ASA5585-RACK-KIT=
ASA 5585-X Front Rack and Rear Rack Kit
it used to be you could search for a datasheet, but those are now bloated with a bunch of marketing fluff that is not remotely close to being datasheets.

The RAILS part is the standard slide rail kit with the ball bearings etc. that allows the ASA to slide in and out without unmounting.
The REAR-RACK is the little guide pieces that attach to the ASA plus the longer bits that attach to the rack's rear posts to give the unit support on the rear. It's sold separately in case someone started out with the kit below but only used the front hardware and the rear bits went missing if/when they decided they should add them.
The RACK-KIT includes the REAR-RACK pieces plus the big rectangular pieces with ears that attach on the front sides of the ASA and allow you to secure it into your front posts.

  • Where can I find mounting rail hardware for single CPU G4 Xserve?

I am wanting to mount my G4 single CPU 1 GHz in a four post rack now where I have a new G5 (keep them all together). I however cannot find the rest of the hardware for it that I got when I bought it several years ago, all I have are the dog ears that I used to mount it in a telco rack.
I've looked on eBay, and a few other places. Surely this is available somewhere? I hope?
    Thanks...

There is no such published reference guide. The closest thing would be the global price list but it's generally not distributed. (What Jouni mentioned was probably an extract of that very large document.)
Due to the broad range of products (and associated bundles and services), Cisco uses online configuration and ordering tools (Cisco Commerce Workspace or CCW) internally and with its partners. The information in it is very dynamic and can change day to day as the tens of thousands of products Cisco offers are introduced, deprecated (i.e., Approaching or at End of Sales), offered in different promotional bundles, etc.
When a Cisco salesperson or partner solution advisor talks with a customer, they take the customer's input and build equipment, software and services configuration sets supporting the proposal. CCW will validate the required items are ordered and generate a configuration set that has not only the product IDs (PIDs, generally referred to as SKUs or Stock Keeping Units in this context) but also the plain language descriptions of what each PID means.
They should be conveying that information to you (or any customer they are engaged with) to enable you to make the informed decision you mention.

  • MDS 9120/40 and two postTelco Rack Kits - DO THEY EXIST??

Has anyone out there actually gotten a two post telco rack kit from Cisco for a MDS9120 or MDS9140 switch. It's like trying find Elivs!!!
According to Cisco's documentation (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps5987/products_installation_guide_chapter09186a0080417dd9.html#wp1018712) These switches can be mounted on two post telco racks. We've mounted MDS9509's in two post telco racks because they come with the right racking gear. 9120's and 40's come with 4 post telco rack kits. I've gotten nothing from our Cisco rep ("talk to EMC") or the guy he brought with him the second time he came by to tell us "I don't know." The EMC guys are trying to figure it out but there's no where for them to look. I called 1-800-Cisco blah blah and asked the lady and she told me they don't have "access" to MDS switches in their ordering system (and couldn't find anything about them anyway.) I've got an edge node that's been waiting since mid-april. I know I can get this from racksolutions.com but paying another $300 bucks after we've paid $40,000 for the switches kind of sticks in our craw.

  • Mounting Brackets for WLC526

I ordered a WLC526 for a customer. Howevever, it didn't come with brackets to mount it into a standard 19" rack.
I called our distributer support. They said that it's intended to be a desktop unit. However, it has screw holes on the side of it.
Does anyone have a part number for brackets to mount the WLC526 into the rack?
    Thanks,
    Ben

    Thanks alot.
Those part numbers are actually for the asa, but i hear they will work on the WLC526. The actual part number for the UC500 rack mounts is ACS-UC500RM-19=.
I found that the "UC500" part number quite a bit less expensive than the ASA part number.
    Thanks,
    Ben
