Mount Functionality in Nautilus Gone !!

I have been using Arch sence November. Up untill yesterday, I realized that when I am in Nautilus, I have always seen my Other HD and partitions.
I could mount them by clicking on my choice, give my password, and they would be mounted. I can no longer mount my partitions through Nautilus. I can auto mount my usb drives and usb sticks. I can make a dir in media and use the terminal to mount any and all drives, but I have lost all functionality through Nautilus. I anve followed the Hal wiki, but no functionality in Nautilus.

  • Mounting shares with nautilus

    When I was using Ubuntu a few months ago Nautilus automatically mounted shared folders. That was really convenient and I'm trying to figure out how to do this on Arch. My shared folder icon comes up but when I try to open it I get the error, Unable to Mount Location: Failed to mount windows share.
    I browsed the forum and the wiki looking for answers. I've messed with the samba.conf file and can't seem to get this to work. I even copied my roommates smb.conf from his computer running Ubuntu. Here's the smb.conf:
    # Sample configuration file for the Samba suite for Debian GNU/Linux.
    # This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
    # smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
    # here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options most of which
    # are not shown in this example
    # Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)
    # is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #
    # for commentary and a ; for parts of the config file that you
    # may wish to enable
    # NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command
    # "testparm" to check that you have not made any basic syntactic
    # errors.

    I'm having the same issue here, though not just in Nautilus.
    Samba is working to some extent because I can access the directories I'm sharing on both of my Linux computer from a Windows laptop with no trouble. Come to think of it the Windows laptop (running XP) and my VirtualBox, also running XP, both access the samba shares fine.
    However, I can not access them from the Linux computers. I have two Linux machines actually, Avalon and Atlantis. The one, Avalon, I can't access anything from/on (though Windows can access it just fine). The other one, Atlantis, I am sharing /homes and /srv, /srv mounts fine, but /homes will not. I'm sharing /srv on Avalon as well, but it won't mount.
    To simplify, /srv on Atlantis is the only share I can access from either Linux machine. But only the /srv on Atlantis, not the /srv on Avalon.
    I have smbnetfs installed. Here are my daemons from rc.conf:
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs smbnetfs crond dbus hal fam alsa mysqld mythbackend mpd openntpd lircd cups httpd sshd privoxy tor samba gdm)
    I am curious though: does netfs and smbnetfs need to be running?
    Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Bookmarks, toolbars, back function are all gone. How do I get to my old format?

    Firefox looks entirely different today. I can no longer see toolbars, bookmarks, the back button, help, the address bar, and most everything that was there yesterday.

    Most likely, this is a problem with your profile. Go to the Orange Firefox button -> Help -> Restart with addons disabled. Firefox will restart and ask you if you want to make any changes permanent. Select "Reset all toolbars and controls," then "Make changes and restart." If this doesn't fix it, you may need to repeat the process, but select other options.

  • Devicekit + nautilus mount disk w/ customized label

    Hello, I've tried modified hal policy rule to make nautilus mount disk with customized label,
    but failed.
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <deviceinfo version="0.2">

    </match>
    </match>
    </device>
    </deviceinfo>
    I found that the policy rules are not functional,
    And even I stop hal by /etc/rc.d/hal stop
    I still can mount disk by nautilus, but it is default mounted to /media/UUID
    Is that done by devicekit?
    I don't know when is devicekit daemon started, ps aux I got below?
    root 2177 0.0 0.0 4612 660 ? S 23:11 0:00 devkit-disks-daemon: not polling any devices
    and how to make my nautilus mount some disk with "movies" but not its UUID?
    Thanks

    Sorry, I forgot to mentioned that I never assign LABEL to the partition.
    I am trying to do is mount /dev/sdd1 /media/movies by nautilus even if it is not assigned any LABEL.
    Sorry, the title should changed to "devicekit + nautilus mount disk w/ customized string(name)"
    and I've tried that if I use ntfslabel to change label of /dev/sdd1 to "movies"
    it works fine like I want.

  • Function key missingMay I ask you for a solution for th for mirror displays

    May I ask you for a solution for the following problem.
    I have recently switched from a Powerbook G4 15 inch to a MacBook Pro 15 inch.
    I often give presentations in large lecture halls where the beamer is controlled by a technician not immediately accessible. What happens is that I start up my laptop and the main screen appears on the beamer, which is not yet switched on to be seen on the big screen. All I get on my laptop is the empty secondary screen. On my Powerbook G4 there was a function key, which allowed me to immediately mirror the displays (synchronize the monitors), which instantly solved the problem and gave me control to start my presentation. The technician controlling the beamer would then start showing the beamer to the audience when my first slide had appeared.
    On my MacBook Pro this function key is gone. The following situation happened: I again got the empty screen on my laptop at the lectern and the beamer was not yet shown to the public so I had no way to get command over my computer. The technician was not reachable by me and was patiently waiting for me to start my presentation which of course I could not do. This is an embarrassing situation due to the fact that the necessary function key is no longer available.
    I tried to create a keyboard shortcut function to mirror the displays but I failed. I urgently need your advice.

    Both Kappy and drsailer are really trying to help.
    The top row (function keys) is identical on US and German keyboards (Swiss German in my case) and the F7 key has been assigned a new function in all models released after February 2008 (a tribute to gamers and leisure users ostensibly).
    In analogy, the respective entries have been deleted from the help files. So it all makes sense except that this treasured function is no longer available for the few people like me using the laptop predominantly for lectures in ever changing surroundings and situations.
    The situation I am talking about, is when you get to a lectern and start your computer up once you are there. Work arounds like having it in standby with the first slide mounted exist, but you have to think of it and prepare it in advance. Of course you can disconnect it from the beamer cable at the lectern and get the control back, start up the slide and connect it again. The first time you are in such a predicament you will most liekely not be cold blooded enough to think about that. Even if you are it is utterly uncool if you have to fiddle around before your presentation starts.
    It is not the end of the world but it should be easy for the Apple people to write a little modification to assign a key or a combination of keys to replace the abandoned F7 function key for "mirror displays".
    In fact, it is therotecially possible to assign keys to all the menu functions (mirror displays is still retained as a menu function once you activate it) but you are asked to type the exact wording of the menu function. I tried a variety of German and Englisch wordings to no avail. The wordings are different if you pull down the menu under the display ikon or if you check in system preferences under displays. Here the German system may in fact be the conundrum.
    If somebody lets me know the exact English wording in these 2 places in the English system, I can check, if I missed something there in my attempts.

  • After numerous display problems with version 5 affecting my job's web site, I've gone back to 3.6.18. Any dangers in this?

    My workplace's web site was recently redesigned and launched and with more recent versions of Firefox [including 5] I had both display and functionality problems I hadn't had before and that aren't happening with IE8. Everything from wrong colors to scroll bars in editing text boxes that wouldn't work unless you toggled to full page view and back, to excessively constrained columns on the main portal page. Two support people at our web site company told me they still used 3.6.18 so I uninstalled 5 and went back to 3.6.18. Some colors are still wrong [I tried the troubleshooting suggestions for that to no avail] but at least the functionality problems are gone. Firefox has been my preferred browser for several years now, but I worry about the ramifications of using such an older version.

    Going all the way back to Firefox 3.0.5 is shear foolishness, it is 14 security versions behind the last 3.0.19 release. And that version is missing at least a dozen security updates that were applied to the 3.5 and 3.6 versions after support for 3.0.x ended.
    If you are not happy with Firefox 4, you should have installed Firefox 3.6.17. That is very similar to the 3.0 and has all the security fixes that have been released since support for Firefox 3.0.x ended last year.

  • Mounting an AFP filesystem in C

    I'm attempting to use mount an Apple file share within a C program. I have shell scripts that do the same job so know how to mount the desired filesystem. Yes, I could shell out and do it that way if I had to but would like to do this a bit more gracefully if possible. I already have a handle on obtaining passwords from the keychain so am good there.
    From the manual page on mount,
    int mount(const char *type, const char *dir, int flags, void *data);
    Should type be specified as "afp"?
    I don't need anything special for flags, so I believe I can pass 0 there?
    Where is the structure for 'data' when an afp share? Data is a pointer to a structure that contains the type specific arguments to mount. The format for these argument structures is described in the manual page for each filesystem. I've not be successful in searching the manual pages nor have I come up with anything useful searching the include and include/sys directories with grep.
    Thank you in advance for your help. Don't shy away from showing me a code snippet

    Here is the best I've been able to find, and it doesn't look good.
    I don't know if using C would be any more graceful. The BSD mount() function is just part of the BSD interface. There is no guarantee of it being any more graceful than anything else. It may just use the file system type and go out and execute mount_afp.
    I did find a few examples using MacOS X CoreFoundation-type functions. Those sure don't look graceful.

  • IMac (10.6.8) won't mount audio CDs, won't mount lens cleaner.

    I'm on an iMac running 10.6.8 and recently I've had problems getting audio CDs to mount. I've gone into the iTunes settings as well and just asked it to "Show CD". I also purchased a Memorex OptiDisc lens cleaner, I read many suggestions on the community about trying that. It won't mount. It rejects it just like all other audio CDs, and ONLY audio CDs. I ran a permissions repair and tried to reset the PRAM (which may or may not have worked, not sure). What do I do?

    I honestly don't know about the CDs issue. I noticed it last semester when I tried to play a Michael Jackson CD for a class assignment (we were analyzing songs from different time periods, and I got Quincy Jones). If it had started to prior to that I'm not sure, but I had to insert that CD about three times before it would mount. At that point I just riped it because I knew I'd be listening to it approximately 100 times, turned out to be a good idea. It quit on me completely when I was trying rip some soundtracks (which I am betting are sony since the films were releaed through sony), I got 3 of them done and then nothing. Which *****. And what't the issue with SONY CDs. if you don't mind my picking your brain furter?
    I didn't hear a bong, but I think my earbuds were plugged in. Is there a special way of doing the PRAM reset with the wireless keyboards?

    Instead I got this single RAID Volume named Untitled & on Launching Disk Utility it started Data Rebuilding (???).
    Understanding that something gone wrong & having back up of this entire data I decided to format these drives seperately in 2 diff MacPros.
    While trying to format, one drive formatted perfectly but 2nd drive was still unable to format.
    So it was decided to format these drives once on Windows Machine in NTFS & then putting them back in MacPro & formatting for Mac OS Extended Journaled, in order to get clean disks.
    HDDs were sucessfully formatted but on putting them in One of Mac Pros, it was discovered that HDDs wre mounting & functioning fine but in disk utility I was not getting all the Options for HDDs.
    I have attached sceenshots of this problem.
    Kindly advise on how to solve this issue.
    Thanks in advance
    Yogesh

    This is way out of my area of expertise so take that into account in all that follows...
    From the "Type: logical volume group" line in your screenshot, it appears you have a "CoreStorage Drive" -- a virtual drive made up of two physical drives, somewhat like a RAID. This article explains how to make one, but it also has info about how to destroy one.
    For more info about this, you might want to read through the coreStorage | cs coreStorageVerb […] section of the diskutil man page.

  • [SOLVED] NTFS partition unmounted after suspend to ram

    I recently did a from-scratch installation after I bought an SSD to replace of my old harddrive. Since this fresh install I have been having a problem with an NTFS partition that is mounted by way of fstab (it's not _the_ windows partition just a bit of shared space on a dual-boot setup): Whenever I suspend the computer and bring it back up, the NTFS partition is invariably unmounted.
    The mount point is empty and the mount command makes no mention of the mount. A simple "sudo mount /mnt/SAND" will bring the partition back up again although sometimes it needs to be umounted first (the mount point is still empty despite the 'mount'). Here is the fstab line:
    /dev/sda3 /mnt/SAND ntfs-3g defaults,noatime,uid=1000,gid=100 0 0
    Testing and screwing around I've noticed that if the WINDOWS partition is mounted using nautilus (as it is not mentioned in fstab) that too will be unmounted while a non-root ext4 partition (UBUNTU) is not.
    So my hypothesis is that these NTFS partitions are singled out for unmounting when suspending (but apparently not mounting when reawakening?) -- maybe because they are assumed to be external drives? Given that it happens across mounting solutions (fstab/nautilus) I'm inclined to think it's not a bug?
    At any rate I'm looking for a solution that will allow me to stop the unmounting when suspending -- ideally for all internal drives, secondarily for these specific partitions. I have checked the suspend to ram article on the wiki but it doesn't seem to mention anything about unmounting...
    EDIT: After the Great Big Arch Switch To Systemd this problem no longers occurs on so I'm closing it. Not necessarily much of a solution to anyone who happens on this from google, sorry.

    Hi all,
    It seems that most freezes are gone with:
    - 270.29 beta driver
    - MTRR enabled by appending enable_mtrr_cleanup mtrr_spare_reg_nr=1 to the list of kernel options (see http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showpos … tcount=39)
    I didn't investigate further to  know if both the driver and the MTRR trick are required.
    Thanks a lot,
    Aurel.

  • Gnome-shell removable devices

    Hi guys,
    I have a partition mounted on boot in fstab:
    LABEL=DATA /media/data vfat defaults,umask=000 0 1
    This shows up in gnome-shell on the removable devices icon (in the tray).
    What is the reason for this?
    Is it because it isn't part of /home /boot etc, or is it caused by the mount point or filesystem type?
    (i.e. why doesn't /home get classed as a removable device, but mounting my data partition does?)
    The reason i ask is i simply want to remove it from the removable devices list.
    Cheers
    Kane

    Thanks,
    Yes i didn't realise until now that any partition mounted is added to the removable devices list (e.g. using nautilus)
    It's not such a big issue, i just don't class it as a removable device
    I would be happy with the simple functionality in nautilus (the tray icon annoys me for some reason).

  • Permissions error while rendering to xRaid

    Hello!
    I'm having a problem that I can't figure out. And it's pretty urgent because I'm delivering 225 VFX shots in 9 days.
    When I render a quicktime or a frame sequence out of After Effects (7 or 6.5) to my locally mounted xRaid volume, I will frequently and randomly get the llowing errors:
    "After Effects error: opening file "test2_00235.tga" -- you do not have permission to open this file (-54).
    (3::130)"
    when I hit "ok" it's followed by:
    "After effects error: cannot close a closed file. (3::5)"
    If I continually requeue, it will eventually get through it (after deleting the bad frames of course). What's weird about the error is that it says it's failing while trying to READ the file that it's actually WRITEing.
    I do not get this error when rendering to the drive from another machine with a different user account that has mounted the xRaid via AFS.
    I am logged in as admin.
    The xRaid is set to "ignore ownership on this volume" and all the permissions for all folders on the disk are set to "0 drwxrwxrwx"
    I do not experience any permissions-related errors with anything outside of After Effects. All other applications and the system read and write to the volume without problems.
    Here's more about my hardware setup:
    I am working on:
    Quad G5
    OS 10.4.5
    4.5GB DDR2 SDRAM
    xRaid 3.5TB with the two raid sets each Raid 5 and then software Raid O on top of that. Connected with the Apple fiber channel PCI express card. Latest Firmware and Raid Admin Tools.
    The problem occurs rendering with nearly any settings from AE 7x244 or AE6.5
    Any advice you can offer would be great.

    ben,
    we've been having the same problem here! funny, we're the company that did the main title for hollow man 1. hollywood is a small town eh?
    we use a xserve for our AE raid and recently upgraded some machines that came with 10.4 preinstalled. before the introduction of 10.4 to our farm, we had no problems. we use the built in watch folder method of rendering and render on files collected entirely on the raid. the error we get is a "write permission error" and usually happens within a 1-5 min of rendering.
    we have been chasing the problem for a good month or two now and we've talked to tech support on both sides (apple and adobe) with no result. we still have the problem and now that we have a growing number of 10.4 machines our functioning farm has gone from 21nodes to 8!!
    some "theories" have been that spotlight is causing it. but we cant make the AE raid volume a private non-spotlight item. (you can drag it in but it dosen't stay... even on the AE server)
    another theory is that the origonal machine creating a folder to render to HAS to be a 10.4 machine to create the proper permissions. this still dosen't fully work.
    also, we tried the one you tried, and ignored ownership on this volume. even though we would be losing some server automation functionality doing this, it did not help.
    id like to say that its goten to the point where its mind blowingly stupid. apple being world class systems and well known for their ease and functionality should NOT BE HAVING THIS KIND OF PROBLEM or should have helped us by now.
    if you find anything out please let us know. im tired of planning 2k renders a week in advance. good luck.
