Mount MBP to MacPro and MacPro to MBP?

ooof. i am doing a complete reinstall on both my MacPro (Lion) and my MBP (Mountain Lion).
can anyone help me figure out how to get the Finder pane to /see/ the Mac Pro from the MBP and vice versa?
is this a Users and Groups set of settings - or something else entirely?! - and either way can anyone help me do this in a way that will allow them to stay permanently mounted (?) and not result in making either machine available to just anyone off the street or in a coffee shop?

Sharing is pretty simple. You just select the boxes you'd like, read the description of what the feature does, and select what you'd like to share. Certain features like Screen Sharing can be password protected while others cannot. If a device is available for sharing, it'll automatically appear in Finder and be "live" as you say. Otherwise it simply won't appear in the sidebar.
Suppose I want to send something to my MacBook Pro, I just select it from the sidebar and it's instantly available.
There's no need for a login or anything. However, as you can see in the screenshots, I've logged in as a Guest, which requires no username or password. If you want to log in with elevated permissions, select "Connect As" and you see this.
After logging in as my admin account, I get access to folders otherwise restricted to Guests.

i have finally settled on using notational velocity (which i love) to sync data between my MBP and my MacPro and simplenote to get these to my iPhone.
can i sync stickies between all three of these device? right now these only exist on my macbookpro and this is a big pain.

It's either the connection from the laptop to icloud or from icloud to iphone that's the problem. To find the answer, do the following...
Using a computer's browser log into icloud.com and then look at the contacts page. If the edits show up there, then the problem is from icloud to iphone. If edits are not there, then the problem is from laptop to icloud.
Whichever device the problem points to, verify that it is logged into the right icloud account and that Contacts is turned on. (System preferences>icloud on mac or Settings>icloud on ios device.

"Templates" on Dropbox (for MBP and MacPro)

I am using MobileMe to sync Bookmarks, Contacts and and I am storing some software data here so that it is available to /both/ my MBP and MacPro.
Can I do this for settings that I change for something like Pages or Numbers?
Is there other data to backup and/or share in this manner to streamline things?

if i am not mistaken Mountain Lion will not let me have the Mac Pro show up in this utility because it just doesn't support it so wired or not wired is not an issue it is just the OS i think.
also, for some very weird reason i was able to access the MBP from the iPhone App and then the MBP showed up on the Mac Pro in me.com.
i will try and check this again and post back if it is an issue again.

MacPro n card in MBP weak signal...this a possible cause?

After adding a MacPro card to my MBP CD I was surprised to see a weak signal when using an n enabled network (AEBSn). I was also surprised to see that g performance and signal strength was weaker also.
I know I wasn't alone in wondering why, but I think I may have found out the cause. Everyone knows that the C2D MB and MBP uses a 3 antenna array on a Atheros chip...however, the MacPro, AppleTV and probably the iMac all use a 2 antenna connection Broadcom card. Why only 2 antenna? Well, I think (from what I have read) that the 2 antenna leads are actually coaxial cables with a antenna within a antenna...what I think is called a 2x2 antenna array, allowing for MIMO and the high n rated speeds.
Thoughts? This has been bugging me since I installed the card and I just could not understand why I would lose so much signal and gain so much noise. Curious to see what everyone else thinks.

Apple genius said coz the imacG5 is G connected all is G.. fair enough kinda guessed that.
So hard wired the G5.
MBP still drop to 2 bars then hangs.. never had this with G.
AppleTV is further away and is 4bars fine.
Put MBP where imac is.. 3 bars.. itunes 720p footage stutters where same clip on iMac running atG would stream fine.
Think the MBP wireless is pretty pants, fine for surfing..
What i didnt know, as speed of wireless gets faster.. ie file transfer.. range drops.. so I get hangs on file transfers.
Gonna drop the router back to G in the morning see if that sorts it.

Reinstall MacFuse with the one from http://www.tuxera.com/mac/macfuse-core-10.5-2.1.9.dmg. If that doesn't work, you can use Paragon NTFS for Mac 9.0 which has been designed to work with Lion.

Can I use a 15" MBP as keyboard and screen to work on bootable drive MBP 17

I already asked this question in a post with other questions more prominant so I am trying this as a solo question. I have a MBP 17" intel Core Duo that will be going in for repairs. I have an OWC 1 TB drive formated to be bootable. Can I boot from the external HD from a 15" MBP Core Duo and use it essentially as a keyboard and screen and work on the 17" files with all the software or can I only transfer files to the 15"? The 17" has Leopard and Adobe CS3 (which I cannot do without) the 15" runs Tiger and I run CS2 on it.

Is there a way to only use external monitor and have the MBP open to keep it cool?

I'd like to be able to just use an external monitor with my MBP due to space limitations, However, when I close the lid on my MBP, it overheats and the fans go crazy, making a terrible racket without cooling the machine :/.
The Screen preferences do not cater for this setup in any way.

Have you tried placing the Mac on a stand? There are even models with fans for greater cooling effect.
AFAIK, there is no air movement thru the keyboard or speaker grilles as the fans do their stuff thru the slot below the lid hinge. Maybe taking one of those "compressed air duster" cans and blasting away on the area may help; every time I've done so on mine a mini desert storm of dust has come out.

ITunes and Airfoil on MBP no longer see Airport express. Why?

I use an Airport Express to stream music from MacBook Pro (10.6.8) to our home theater system. Has always worked fine (with both iTunes 10.7 and Airfoil 4.7.6) -- up until recently. Now iTunes no longer has the button to switch speakers and Airfoil no longer has any speaker options.
The MBP itself sees and connects directly to the AE with no problems. Good, strong signal but it is no longer being detected by iTunes (or Airfoil).
My iMac (10.9.5) also sees and connects to the AE... and the iTunes on the iMac sees the AE and streams to it with no problems so it seems the AE is still working okay for this purpose.
Has something gone bad with the iTunes on the MBP... and also with the Airfoil at the same time?
Any possible solutions to this problem?

I have the same problem with Windows 7 64bit. ITune can see AE and stream Music well. Airfoil, TuneBlade (airplay soft) can also see AE but can't connect and stream music. I ' ve already tried to setup firewall Exception list, even turning off firewall off both windows and antivirus but still got the same problem with the message 'Airfoil was unable to connect to the remote speaker " ... 's Airport Express". Please check the firewall on the computer where " ...'s Airport Express" is running and try again'. Any help would be appreciated !.

I am about to be forced to use a business network connected PC in my office, but I will continue to bring my personal MacBook Pro to work for my personal e-mail, calendar, internet, etc. (it will be connected to a seperate open DSL network). I am thinking about getting an Apple Cinema display and trying to use this one display for both computers. I would like a way to "switch back and forth" between the two systems, all the while using the same mouse, keyboard, printer and Cinema display.
Does anyone have any experience setting up what I am wanting to do?
Also, how does connecting an external display effect a MBP? Can you close the screen on the MBP, turning off the MBP's display but keeping the computer running? I'd like to be able to tuck the MBP out of the way to save deskspace but still be using it via the Cinema display and peripherals...

You can use synergy (link: http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/) to link the mouse and keyboard across the two platforms.
If you want to use only one display, you'll need a KVM switch.
You can run the MBP either with it's own screen open, or shut it and use only the external screen.

My apple ID and password is now different and cloud does not recognize the changes. How do I change it on Imac and Macpro

Can anyone tell me how to change my default ID on Cloud, to my new ID and passord? I have the problem with both computers. The Imac and Macpro. There are no options in the box to make changes.

Welcome to the Apple Community.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your iOS device, you need to delete the account from your iOS device first, then add it back using your updated details. (Settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit "Delete Account")
Providing you are simply updating your existing details and not changing to another account, when you delete your account, all the data that is synced with iCloud will also be deleted from the device (but not from iCloud), but will be synced back to your device when you login again.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your computer, you need to sign out of the account from your computer first, then sign back in using your updated details. (System Preferences > iCloud, click the sign out button)

Macpro and using a TV as another viewing option at the same time as display

Hi,
I have a MacPro and I'm trying to edit some footage but want to use my Radeon X1900 with one output going to my 23inch Apple display the other output going to my TV.
I have the setting in FCP veiw menu to "All Frames" & "Digital Cinema Desktop Preview (not Main)"
but either the playback is not on the TV or it only shows 1 frame at a time as if it is freezing when playing the sequence back, it freezes on both TV and display.
I want whatever I'm viewing in either the canvas or timeline to be displayed on the TV also, is this possible?
Getting rather frustrated!!!

Here Shane describes the setting in some AV options about "mirror desktop" I looked for this setting and found it was unchecked.
After checking it and trying again.... everything is perfect!!

Try this way:
set up your iTunes account, disable autosync in iTunes, connect your phone to your new Mac and right click on it in the device list and choose backup.iTunes will backup your phone without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your phone for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the phone for the first time.

This forum is for the Mac Pro, the desktop, no the MacBook Pro, the laptop. You might have better luck in that forum.
That being said, I would make sure you have a DVI cable, a VGA cable, and the DVI->VGA adaptor that came with the MBP. I personally would also bring/buy the DVI->Video adaptor (P/N: M9267G/A) along with a s-video cable and composite video cable (standard RCA cable, usually yellow) just in case. Also, I would test all your cables before you go to make sure they work. Nothing is worse than getting there and then realizing that you went through all the trouble to lug around a cable and then find out it is faulty.
Generally any new projector will allow either a DVI or VGA connector, with DVI being the preferred choice. But there are still some old projectors out there that only accept s-video or composite or maybe their other inputs don't quite work right. Also, you might be forced to use a TV if you get there and find that the projector is broken or something and those other connections will come in very handy.
Probably a bit overkill. But I like to be prepared, especially if I'm going all the way to Europe to give a presentation. The extra cost/time is negligable compared to not having what you need.

Likely either the batch of media is defective, or the drive itself is not working.
Swap for different media; for a different batch from a different vendor, and also try +R media.
The slot-loading drives on various Mac systems can and variously do fail. If different media doesn't work, then you probably have a failed drive.
If your Mac is of same the vintage as OS X v10.4 that's listed in your footer and you're not in a position to replace or repair the optical drive in your Mac, then you might consider using an external USB CD/DVD device. If you don't have another Mac around to perform the recording on, that is.
