Mount my dvd and Cd drives

I have both cd and dvd burning drives, and ever since I first installed arch they've been innaccesable, and their contenst invisible.
Two cd drives (one too many) and a dvd drive are listed in /media, but I can't see any of their contents.
Something I used to be able to do using nautilus (I'm using whatever xfce4 comes with now) in ubuntu.
I've tried
mount -t auto /dev/dvd /media/dvd
But I get told to specify the filesystem type. Which I don't know, and probably varies accross different types of cdrom and dvdrom.
I'd like to be able to see, and use, both my cd and dvd drives for movies, music, and burning. And I'd like to be able to see their contents easily in the termnal or the file broswer.
Any help would be appreciated, I don't want to use Ubuntu

Forgot to mention - I've been using root, which is in the optical group.
It didn't work, and just told me to specify the filesystem type again.
My fstab says:
/dev/cdrom /media/cdrom auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
/dev/cdrom1 /media/cdrom1 auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
/dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
Again, one to many cdrom entries, but I don't know which one is correct.
hal is currently added to the deamons to run at startup.

  • The recovery DVD and the driver CD

I assume if a complete drive failure occurs, that this DVD (which indicates Lenovo recovery DVD) and the CD (which indicates drivers) can completely restore the system to factory default if the hard drive was to be replaced.
Currently, I know using the one touch key (or F2) during the Lenovo boot up screen activates a complete recovery, but this works only if the hard drive is working.
What if a new hard drive, is a one touch done with the DVD in the drive?
I have booted off the DVD before, without hitting the key, this method just activates Windows Vista install menu.
The 330MB system backup and restore software that can be download only "backups" the current windows install condition or only restores a previous backup, neither of which is the factory default. If using this backup/restore software and telling it to access the DVD to look for factory default, it doesnt indicate a "backup" is on this DVD, nor can it find a previous version on C or D hard drives. So I am curious to how the system can be put back to factory status if the hard drive is replaced and a backup isn't performed using this software of which has to be downloaded and installed. If a system crash, I would not bring back to current conditon, I would rather start from a fresh factory restore.
    Thanks.

the recover dvd which contains vista will install all the software that came pre-installed with lenovo systems .

After a long (so far untimed) time without restarting, my G5 will not recognize an inserted DVD. If I restart, all is well. Likewise, after a long period without restart, my PGP encrypted disks will not show up on the desktop; after a restart, all is well.
Any clues how to fix this?

  • How do I enable booting from CD/DVD and USB drives?

Ok, I have been struggling with this all night, and I am stumped.  I have a brand new z510 notebook, and I need to do a clean install of windows 8.1.  Problem is that I can't seem to boot from CD or USB.  I have entered the bios, and although the DVD rom drive works, and it shown correctly in BIOS, it does NOT allow me to add it to the boot list.  Also, there is an option called 'Boot From USB'  I enable that, and still the USB boot does not show up in the boot list.  The only thing I have in the boot list is the 'Windows Boot Manager' and it lists the name of my drive.
I thought that maybe secure boot was the issue, but I tried disabling this, and is still doesn't let me do what I want.
I am kind of at my wit's end here.  I just paid $800 for a top of the line laptop, and I can't even boot from a cdrom.  Every computer I have had since the 1980s have allowed me to do just that without trouble.
    What am I missing??
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Do you see any BIOS settings like "Boot mode" with a "CSM" or "Legacy" type of item as a choice? You might try toggling that to see if you can successfully boot from external media that way.
Disclaimer: I don't have a Z510 to confirm the BIOS screens. I'm going by inference from what I see on my Y2P and X1C.
Please let me know if this works.

  • Auto-detect & mount disk partitions and removable drives

I use ubuntu in addition to my current wip of installing arch linux. Now i have installed lxde desktop. But i am not able to see any of my partitions of my disk and other hdd. Besides removable drives also dont get mounted.
Similarly if a new partition is created the same also gets autodetected in ubuntu. eg my arch linux partition. I need not go to do any fiddling in the system to recognize the same.
So is it possible to achieve the same under archlinux? So want to know how to get  the same done.
what i want is to have the partitions[ext & ntfs] detected when the filemanager is opened and mount/unmount at my will, just as i do now in ubuntu.
So far what i have done is based on the lxde wiki, i installed the polkit-gnome gvfs package but nothing is mounted.
i would like to have specific instructions to how to work out and get the above  done.
    pls guide to the same.

What do you mean when you say that pcmanfm is not displaying *any* partitions? You see no files at all? Or do you mean: it is not showing partitions not listed in /etc/fstab?
I mean it is not showing partitions not listed in /etc/fstab. As of now pcmanfm shows only the arch systems partitions which I created while installation : root, and home. Balance of partitions of other systems of the same drive and second hard drive is not shown.
When you say that in Ubuntu, newly created partitions show up automatically, do you mean that if you change the partitioning on your internal drive, the changes are automatically reflected in /etc/fstab?
Yes the changes are automatically reflected in the filemanager of ubuntu, ie. Nautilius. However Ubuntu fstab as you see in the previous post of mine contains no entry to other partitions other than just ubuntus. In the fstab I posted above you can very well see it just shows 4 partitions of hdd1  [similar to the way the arch fstab shows only its own] where it is installed :boot, root, home, swap. Whereas there is two more partitions there viz windows and a ntfs. You don’t see them in fstab, but when you open the nautilius filemanager you can see the drives. See the image link of my filemanger posted below at the end. In that shared data and windows are two ntfs partition of hdd1 where ubuntu is installed. Arch is installed on 2nd hdd alongwith a Ubuntu.289gb partition is a ubuntu LVM along with arch root and arch home you can see.
If you mean that Ubuntu automatically adds, mounts and unmounts partitions on removable drives when e.g. a USB stick is inserted or when you change the partitioning on one and create a file system, that you can configure to work automatically in arch.
Yes ubuntu automatically adds, mounts and unmounts partitions on internal drives and also removable drives when e.g. a USB stick is inserted  . As you can see in the image i have posted, it shows all my internal drive partitions automatically. No fstab editing nothing. No fiddling with system files so far i have done in ubuntu. For eg i installed arch a month back, the same you can see is automatically seen in the image. All i required was to   update grub  to recognise árch'. Post that when you boot, automatically the new arch partitions are seen. No fstab fiddling anything. Thus tomorrow morning if i create a new partition on my hdd via ubuntu all i require is to reboot post the creation and i will see the new partition asap.
As you can see in the image all my partitions are seen, the one i want i click it and it gets mounted, if i dont want it stays/gets unmounted. And its not just ubuntu i saw the same in some other distros also like suse, centos, fedora.
As far as the lxde wiki is concerned, there it is mentioned to install polkit gnome gvfs for mounting and i did the same but nothing still happens.
So this is what exactly i am asking how to do the same on my arch system. So if i am guided i wil go ahead and work to achieve the same.

  • Dvd and cd drive won't open on s7415c slimline pc

I am trying to install a new printer with a cd and I cannot get the drives to open.  In the hardware properties the drives are not listed.  Please help.  Thanks in advance.

What, yours doesn't open?!? Mine does. But I had to use one of these to make it happen...
Seriously, the other possible assumption here is that the OP has a MacBook Pro. If the OP has a Mac Pro (desktop Mac), the correct forum for that machine is here, but if that's the case, a call to AppleCare is the next step.

  • Force mount nonexistent dvd drive

Hello all, So intro: The other day I pop in a dvd backup that has some files I need, now the dvd is not readable, no scratches or anything to the disk read surface. The dvd is just dead.  So what I want to do is to force mount the dvd and make an image and then try and sort through the files if at all possible. What I would like to do is:
    sudo mount -t iso9660 /dev/sr0 /mnt/dvd -o force,ro
and possibly create an image or what I am most leaning towards is dumping the image to a file and then analyising it later:
    dd if=/dev/sr0 of=/home/x/dvdrec.iso conv=noerror
but doing so gives me an error
dd: opening '/dev/sr0': No medium found
and of course the force mounting results in an error saying no media was detected...
Is there anyway to trick fstab into thinking there is a medium mounted there (like there is)
I have searched around the net trying to find some way to recover the files but have had no success. So I was wondering if what I said above would be possible and would work at recovering my files. Any other suggestions on recovering my data? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

Nope no error with the drive (at least I dont think so), it reads other dvds perfectly fine, and before it read the dvds that I am trying to get it to read, I always run a data verification check after burning a disk and they always pass, then I try them just to double check.... I havent had a chance to try it on another dvd drive but I have arranged to use my friends computer to see if it works with his computer, if it does then the my drive is gone.... on the other hand if it doesnt work who knows. Another thing is that I have some other dvds from the same set that are perfectly fine, partly corrupt, and fully unreadable. I dont mistreat my dvds and I can see the burnt in data in the disk, but my comp just cant read it. Im at a loss. Possibly defective media? but that wouldnt explain why it worked before....

  • DVD and CD/RW drives banjaxed

My hard disk boots ok, but both my DVD and CD drive have started to behave weirdly e.g not working.
I noticed on the BIOS start-up that the entries for Secondary Master and Slave are both garbled text......
Similarly, in Win2000 Device Manager, the drives are listed, but again with garbled text, what should be PIONEER DVD.... shows as P O E R D D ....
Is this most likely to be a hardware problem ? (Apologies if this is the wrong place to ask....tia for any ideas

If you enter settings for the CD in Device Manager, you can see if it is currently handling Direct Memory Access. Change this setting and see if things shape up.
Perhaps I miss something below, but don't worry, there should be plenty of help elsewhere too: Manual, Internet, good friends, common sense, etc.
Steve's suggestion is you open the case. So first you unplug the system.
Find the hard disk and the wide IDE-cable that is attached to it.
This cable is also attached to the motherboard.
On the middle of this cable there is a place if you wish to attach another device on this cable.
And that is what you want to do.
Remove a similar cable from the CD-driver for instance.
I don't know how it is inside your case. Perhaps you have to take the CD driver out of it's place to do the rest.
Put the little jumper at the back of the CD driver so the driver is set as slave. There should be a miniature 'S' somewhere above the right place.
Attach the IDE-cable we discussed earlier to the CD driver. Make sure the power cable is properly connected, if you have had to remove it.
Put the CD-driver back if you have had to remove it.
You don't have to put the case door back in place, but now it is time to try the new rigging.
BIOS may take a little longer than usual. Perhaps it might even want some advice from you concerning Primary and Secondary master and slave.

  • Import from DVD or Flash Drive??

I have tried to import into my Library on iTunes from DVD and Flash Drive. They play in iTunes fine as long as I have the DVD or flash Drive inserted in my computer but if I take them out of my computer and click on a song, a window comes up saying file cannot be played because it cannot be found.
I would like these items to download into iTunes and onto my hard drive but it keeps trying to read from my DVD or flash drive I guess. How can I import these items from the DVD or flash drive onto my hard drive?
I have iTunes 7 and run Windows Vista.
    Thanks for your time.

Check your iTunes preferences. Go to Edit>Preferences>Advanced>Importing and make sure the box "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" is checked. That way when you add files from one of your external sources they'll be copied to the computer. If this box isn't checked iTunes simply added a reference to the song's current location which of course is no longer accessible when you remove the drive or disk.

  • Problems mastering to dvd and missing codecs

I am having problems mastering to dvd with the mpeg 2 dvd option and also missing codecs, anyone can help me? new to cs5 so probably something I am doing wrong when going to export then selecting option mpeg2 dvd and select drive for output,it burns and then wont play back even though its burned okay...using tons dvds and wasting them, and getting rather frustrated...no idea how to use encore yet as in menus and stuff as used the old version of elements and 1.5 before upgrading ...so help me please

Assuming that you have the full-paid version, and not the trial, look to see if Transfer Activation is grayed out?
Try Importing a simple MP3 Audio file.
It sounds like you have experienced the "revert to trial" of the full-paid version, so that you now have zero MPEG-2 support.
The steps to correct this are:
    1.) Deactivate (probably grayed out)
    2.) Uninstall
3.) Run Adobe Clean Script CS5 several times, rebooting between each run.
    4.) Install CS5
    5.) Instantly update, before launching
    6.) Activate
    7.) Launch and test.
    Good luck,

  • Using DVDs and Airport Extreme Disk

    Hi,
I have all my photos stored on a Hard Drive connected to my Airport Extreme.
My wife has most of her photos stored on a collection of DVDs.
Both of us use our respective laptops to access either the Hard Drive over the Wi-fi or to load up individual DVDs.
Both of us have very limited space on our laptops (hence the DVDs and Hard Drive).
So I have a couple of questions:
Where is the best place to put the Aperture Library file? Locally on my laptop or on the Hard Drive? If I put it locally and take my laptop to a client (without access to my home network) how will/what will I see in Aperture. Guess I'm worried how big the Library file will work.
How does Aperture reference the DVDs? What happens when the DVD is not present in the machine for a particular image and I want to look at it.
I realise these may be elementary questions, but I would appreciate some help
    Many thanks in advance

    hi, stewart
    are your photographs referenced?
    I would imagine they are.
If I put it locally and take my laptop to a client (without access to my home network) how will/what will I see in Aperture. Guess I'm worried how big the Library file will work.

if photos are referenced aperture will show you previews but you will not be able to make adjustments but will be able to work on metadata.
what I do, I have a small (satellite) aperture library inside my mbp for clients for exactly the same reason as you.
when I do meet with the client, I take the client dvd (actually 2 dvds one is a backup in case the first dvd gets injured we can still work -- they are only a first rough, removed all duds like out of focus etc) of photos with me for the meeting. I pretty much only show their photographs in aperture's full screen mode to wow them and I also make a slideshow of the 5 star (the winners) photos to show to the client with music. if off sight (not in studio) I tend to make the meetings at or after sunset for mood.
the main aperture library is on a separate external 7200rpm, 32mb cache, 1tb, esata/fw800 hard drive which I double click to work on in my studio.
btw, you can put a hitachi sata 200gb, 7200rpm, 16mb cache, hard drive on your mbp for more storage to replace the one it came with if it is a smaller drive or slower drive.
as an option I have a small 2.5 inch hitachi fw800/esata 200gb, 7200rpm, 16mb cache, external hard drive that I use only for media (photos, video, music) that is very portable. it's in a small plastic case and has a heat sink and is powered via fw800 to mbp. you can store an aperture library there also and it's fast.

  • Need drivers, Vista won't mount Leopard DVD

Somehow Parallels Desktop (or something) hosed the drivers on my BootCamp partition. Result: can't mount DVDs. Since the only solution for restoring the drivers is to insert the Leopard DVD, you can see my problem. I need drivers to mount the DVD and I need to mount the DVD to get the drivers!
Is there any way out of this vicious circle?

Use another Windows system to put the Drivers folder from the Leopard CD on a USB or FW storage device and then apply the drivers individually on your BootCamp Vista from the storage device. There is some information about this on page 24 of the BootCamp installation instructions.

  • 10.4.4 CD mount gone, but DVD and VLC work, can burn a disk, but won't show

Super drive seemed to work after 10.4.4 and iTunes upgrades for several days until yesterday when cds, either commercial, RW or burned in iTunes refuse to mount. DVD works fine, and I can burn CD's in iTunes, they just won't show up on this G5. Inserting a cd does not trigger itunes or CDDB lookup. Only thing that may be different is that I used a Lexar Jump Drive Secure recently to transfer some files. Seemed to stop working after that. I can access the drive through Toast and Disk Utility by the way, and inserting a DVD works just fine to launch DVD player. There is no change in drive preference settings that I can find.
Any suggestions? Haven't yet tried Archive and Install just in case there's something obvious with this upgrade. If the Lexar installs any drivers, I'm not sure how to uninstall them. Seems as though there could be an incompatibility there. This drive does install a password program that has worked in the past...
There were some issues shared by many Mac users when first going to Tiger with poor reads in the Superdrive...these seemed resolved up until now...
I use this G5 for audio editing for two radio shows, so I sure need to get the cd function back...

Problem solved. Proven to be 10.4.4 upgrade. Attempted archive and install, but computer would not boot from CD (though Mac Install disk DID mount properly, but restart would not boot). Tried swapping to another DVD drive, same problems so NOT hardware, NOT firmware as suspected by Apple Care support.
But since DVD's appeared to mount properly, tried Mac DVD install disk...worked perfectly, and now Audio cd's mount fine with either DVD drive.
Will try upgrading again to see if problem is reproduced or if it was a corrupted initial install...

  • Superdrive has stopped reading DVD's, replaced drive and have same issue

    Hello,
My G5 2.0 superdrive has been acting up for quite some time however it stopped mounting any DVD media from Movies to Apple OS Install DVD's. It reads CD's, both commercial and burnt. Every blue moon it will actually read a DVD but it is becoming few and far in between.
To make things even more interesting, I replaced the drive on my main machine with the identical perfectly working drive from my other G5 and I am still experiencing the same issue. The other machine reads just DVD's just fine with both drives.
I believe this is caused from software updates from what I've been reading around the web. I would like to hope that this is simply a preference that needs deleted or something that can be resolved quickly. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I am having the same problem which has been getting worse. I put in a DVD, the drive makes sounds as if it is getting ready to read it, but then just keeps making the same sounds over and over. The disk will speed up and then down. Every so often it will "catch" and read the DVD.
This is frustrating because I have the install disks for Leopard sitting on my desk but I can not install it. If I do get it to read the disk once, it asks me to restart and then will not read the disk the start the install, ejects the disks and boots back to 10.4 from my hard drive.
CD read and write just fine, no problem.
    Has anyone solved this problem?
