Mount point  containing the redologs

We were told Oracle typically writes 512b redolog records to the redologs. If the mount point is created with a blocksize > 512b the remaining space is wasted.
For example, if the mount point is created with a 4K blocksize, most likely 3.5K of the block is wriiten with spaces or null characters. This would than cause ~75% of the redolog to contain spaces or non - redolog information.
should the mountpoint containing the redologs be created with the 1k block size?

Oracle uses the physical sector size as the block size of the redo log files and uses the same unit for doing the IO as well. If you want to change the physical sector size, that is only possible if the physical disk of yours would be supporting the size more than 512b which is still not happening by the storage vendors AFAIK. If your vendor confirms that its possible to have a physical block size more larger than 512b and of 4kb, than only you would be able to do so. And if your storage allows you to go more than 512 bytes, you have the option from 11.2 (only) to change teh block size of the redo log file to 4kb .
Besides the links given by Girish, I wrote about it some time back on my blog too. Have a read,

  • Setting the Mount Point

    Hi
My startup disk is mounting fine but not appearing on the desktop. It does appear in Finder windows and works OK.
I see that in Disk Utility the mount point is "/" where it should probably read: "/volumes/Macintosh HD"
How can I set the mount point to the correct directory?
    Thanks / Eckhard

Aww you're taking the time - heroes are hard to come by, and they don't always win right off the bat but encouragement helps!
    G4 Dual 450 MHz
1.12 GB SDRAM some was added, can't remember how much and that was 3 years ago.

Umax Powerlook 2100XL Scanner - SCSI. Only available when I restart with the scanner on of course. Currently off and not available.
Ethernet to a D-Link ADSL router, then to an Airport. Printer etc. is off the router.
80GB contains my working files, no system.
Standard Mac Keyboard and mouse, working fine for years.
Wacom tablet - working fine for years.
USB - I only use 2 devices, a Scandisk photo memory card reader, and a 500MB USB memory stick. I mounted and unmounted both and restarted. No change.
Nothing has changed, no recent system upgrade (or the MacHD disappeared well after I upgraded). Installed Poser Figure Artist a few months ago but to my recollection the Mac HD icon was still around after that. No new drives and this configuration has been stable (which I why I stick with it) for years. No other upgrades or updates (I LIKE to keep it stable!)
No freezes or crashes or hard restarts for months. Unrecoverable freezes are very rare, can't remember the last time.
Repair Permissions worked fine when I started from the Install CD. Minor problems mostly to do with flash - corrected.

It's not renamed as it appears correctly in Finder windows, in Disk Utility, in Startup Disk and in System Profiler, and can be opened no problem. Just won't show up on the desktop.

  • What is the meaning fo mount point, usage of mount point in storage

    HI,
can any one describe the meaning fo mount point, what could be the usage of the mount point, how to use the same,
    please let us know....
    thanks,
    bhavani

can any one describe the meaning fo mount pointFrom Wikipedia:
In Unix-like systems, the mount point is the location in the operating system's directory structure where a mounted file system appears. For example, many modern Linux distributions automatically mount the CD drive as /media/cdrom, so the contents of the CD drive will appear in the /media/cdrom directory.
what could be the usage of the mount point, how to use the same,I believe above lines answer this question to some extent. Please be elaborate if you need details.

  • Time Machine (OSX) doesn't back up files in Mount Point or Disk Image File

    Hi all,
I have two disk images which are scripted to be mounted on login. These two disk images are always mounted to the same location. These two disk images are encrypted TrueCrypt volumes.
Time Machine (TM) will only back up the disk images the first time they are mounted, but not after that. As I modify documents within the volumes throughout the day, the modified timestamps are adjusted properly. However, TM does not back them up. TM never backs up the mount points which are two folders within my home directory.
Any ideas as to why neither the mount point or the image files are backed up? Do the image files have to be closed (unmounted) after being modified for TM to back them up?
Now if TM won't back up the image files because they are locked/open, then why does it back them up the first time even though they are mounted? Also, from what I've read, TM should back up any HFS+ drive which is mounted. Both these drives are HFS+, so it should back up the mount points? I can verify this by doing a 'mount' in the terminal, the following is echo'd back:
/dev/disk0s2 on / (hfs, local, journaled) (Main System Drive)
/dev/disk1 on /Users/username/Folder1 (hfs, local, nodev, nosuid, journaled, noowners, mounted by username) (First TrueCrypt volume)
/dev/disk2 on /Users/username/Folder2 (hfs, local, nodev, nosuid, journaled, noowners, mounted by username)(Second TrueCrypt volume)
    Any ideas will help!
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Here is the resolution:
Apparently time machine checks the parent folder's timestamp before moving into that folder to look for modified files.
So as I was modifying files, the timestamps on the volumes were changing but not the containing directory. Because of this, TimeMachine saw the parent directory had not changed, so did not look for the changed volumes inside.
So to resolve this, I wrote a simple touch script which touches the parent directory to match the modified volumes timestamp (if there is a modified volume).
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • How do I mount a partition at a specific mount point.

How do I mount a partition at a specific mount point? For example I see a Vol01 disk image, which is a partition of one of my hard drives, sitting on my desktop. Under the disk utility it says that its mount point is /Volumes/Vol01. How do I mount this partition as a file system at /Users?
    Thanks, much appreciated.

why do you want to do this? it sounds like you want to keep your home directory on an external drive. this can be done without changing the mount point of the external. copy the home directory to the external. then in system preferences preferences->accounts, unlock the lock at the bottom, control-click on your user and select "advanced options." In the resulting popup change the location of the home directory to the external.

  • How can I add mount points to a guest OS?

    Hi folks,
Still a newbie here but learning.
I've got an VM Server installed on a host
I've downloaded and successfully started an Oracle Enterprise Linux guest (from the template downloaded from Oracle)
I want to add more disk space to the guest now. I'm learning about System Admin but most of my background is DBA so I need some help here.
I notice on the VM Server, when I first boot it up, df -k shows the following mount points
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
    /dev/sda2 3050092 847800 2044856 30% /
    /dev/sda1 101086 45981 49886 48% /boot
    tmpfs 65624 0 65624 0% /dev/shm
After I start up the Oracle Ent. Linux 5 guest, the same df -k command on the VM Server shows:
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
    /dev/sda2 3050092 847800 2044856 30% /
    /dev/sda1 101086 45981 49886 48% /boot
    tmpfs 65624 0 65624 0% /dev/shm
    /dev/sda3 72838656 5323008 67515648 8% /var/ovs/mount/164D6102E20C42A9BC7492CCAFE882EF
I'm curious about the /var/ovs/mount/164D6102E20C42A9BC7492CCAFE882EF mount point. What is that? Can I use some of the mounted space for my guest OS?
If I log into the OEL guest, df -k shows:
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
    /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00
    3999424 3348800 444188 89% /
    /dev/xvda1 101086 12965 82902 14% /boot
    tmpfs 131160 0 131160 0% /dev/shm
So basically what I want to do is to add say three mount points to the guest /u01 /u02 and /u02 at 20Gig each. I'm assuming this disk space comes from the VM server's /var/ovs/mount/164D6102E20C42A9BC7492CCAFE882EF mount but I'm not sure how to do this. Any pointers of instructions are greatly appreciated.
    Cheers
    John S

Read up on the documentation, specifically http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E15458_01/doc.22/e15444/repository.htm#BGBFCDGJ explains it a little better. Basically thats your storage repository,. this is where VM images, ISO's templates and whatnot is stored and it has no correlation what drives you see within the guest VM.

  • How to create Mount Point in Linux

    Hi,
I m new to Linux OS, want to install Oracle EBS R12 on OEL 5.6 . I have downloaded s/w and installed all required packages for OEL.
Now i want to create Staging directory at location /u01/StageR12.
Can anyone guide me for how to create Mount point /u01 and how to assign space of 53 GB to it.... ?
    Reply awaited...

    You're on the right path.
Keep in mind though what you need partition wise just for o/s install. You should have at least 3 partitions:
    - a ?? GB partition for the / (root) mount (the size depends on what you will install and how much space you will need for running that s/w)
    - a 128MB or larger partition for the /boot mount
    - a ?? GB partition as swap space mount (typically rule of thumb is 2x RAM for 4GB and lower, else around 25% of total RAM)
I would not create separate partitions for the old-style +/u01+ mount points for Oracle. That part of the OFA (Oracle Flexible Architecture) standards are old and pre-ASM and pre- automated Oracle managed data files.
You need space for installing an Oracle Home. I do not see the need for a dedicated mount point for that. I use the root file system.
You need space for the actual database. If you use Oracle ASM, then I would create raw partitions (across disks) to be used for database storage. These will not be mounted or formatted. Instead these will be assigned to an ASM diskgroup (and striped by default) and used for database storage.
If you do not use ASM, then you need a cooked file system for storage of database file. In that case separate mount point(s) make sense. Also, it makes sense not to manually apply the old OFA standards, but instead use Oracle managed database files. In that case you need a single mount point (e.g.<i>/oracledb</i>) - and set that as the base directory for Oracle to use for the database. Oracle will create an OFA compliant database directory tree and files under that base directory/mount point.
Keep in mind that the more mount points you have for the database, the more difficult your job becomes to manage storage. The easiest is a single mount point for the database and using Oracle to manage the OFA compliant side for you on that mount point.
Also, you cannot and should not attempt some kind of manual striping layout of the database across multiple mountpoints. This may have made some sense back 10+ years ago. It no longer does.

  • [SOLVED] Mount Points In Arch Linux

When I performed my initial testing install of Arch Linux today, and I was setting up mount points after I finished partitioning with Cfdisk, I was surprised to see that one of the precanned mount points in the Installer was /etc. On OpenBSD, we were warned against having /etc on its own partition, probably because so much important stuff lives there (like the fstab). I was also surprised to see /var wasn't in the precanned list.
Anyway, my question is, can you really have /etc on it's own partition? And does the exclusion of /var indicate a problem with it being on its own partition?

  • Custom mount point in fstab

    Hello,
I am setting up a nas. I have configured a partition scheme that seems suitable for me. I have a problem though, I can not seem to mount a partiton to a custom mount point.
The system is up to date, I just installed it last night. Here is my fstab:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nodev,nosuid 0 0

I want /tm for time machine and /data for samba sharing. If I change /data to /home and /tm to /tmp, everything mounts fine. Is there some reason why I shouldn't be able to mount a partition to a custom mount point? I did this two weeks ago on another box that I set up as a test...
Also, if I run fdisk -l, it tells me that some of my partitions do not start on physical sector boundaries. Is that casue for alarm? I created the partitions with cfdisk and nothing seemed odd when I was doing it...??

  • Using "nested" Mount Points within Mount Points to add additional LUNs to a server

I realize that this might or might not be common and I haven't read or seen anything about this. So here goes...
No clustering. Just a strightup adding LUNs to a server mount point.
I have no issues adding a lun to a mount point (folder on the C-Drive) called MountPoint1. I can build a folder within MountPoint1 and add another LUN to a mountpoint within the first called NestedMountPoint1. I can build another folder within NestedMountPoint1
and add another LUN to a mountpoint within the second called NestedMountPoint2.
    c:\MountPoiint1 (500GB)
       |-NestedMountPoint1 (300GB)
          |-NestedMountPoint2 (300GB)
First, do people do this? (Is it a normal practice?) (Recommended?)
Second, If it is a normal practice, Is there a limit on how many you can nest?
I can see doing this to add storage to a drive. BUT...

    Hi,
A mount point is just a logical way to present drives to a system without using drive letters.  You can nest mount points, but it is recommended to use the root (host) volume exclusively for mount points. The root volume is the volume that is hosting
the mount points. This greatly reduces the time that it takes to restore access to the mounted volumes if you have to run a chkdsk. This also reduces the time that it takes to restore from backup on the host volume.

  • DAG Mount Points

    Hi,
I am moving from drive letters to mount points.  To do this I plan to
add 4 1TB LUNs to one node of my MB server - these four LUNs will have NO drive letter.
Right click one of these new LUN's and create a mount point in C:\Exchange_Mount_Points\DB1, do this a few more times creating DB2, DB3
Move on the next LUN's and do the same thing.
Then add a 2 500GB LUNs for the Logs files.
    questions here are
    1. do you leave the LUN's for the databases assigned with NO drive letter
    2. for Logs am I better off using mount paths same as above or use tradition drive letters
    Thanks

Again, it's preference.  We have several other drives on our multi-role servers. D is where we have our transport logs as well as where we loaded the applications, L is the mount point for both database and logs, H hosts our message tracking
logs, and E hosts our Internet logs. At my previous company, L was the mount point for the logs, and M was the mount point for the mailbox databases. And both of these configurations came from Microsoft consultants. So it's really up to what makes sense
    for your implementation.

  • Mount Point / ????

Hey everyone. Thanks for viewing my post. I am in terrible need of anyone's help! It is absolutely life or death for both my macs. Any advice/solutions will be greatly appreciated.
Here is my situation in great detail to help those of you that might have an answer to help me.
Okay to start things off I am still pretty unsure but from what I have been told at the genius bar, I have a corrupted OS on my MBP. This is where my troubles started. Now as I am an admin assistant I rely on my macs to make my job easier. Since I was using quickbooks on my MBP and have not resolved the OS issue on it, I have looked to my desktop for a secondary source.
Here is my second problem, which right now is the main issue as I wont resolve the first one anytime soon. My desktop is still running OS 10.5.2 and in order to use quickbooks I need a combined update to a current OS. Now when trying to update software, I get an error message that " doesn't recognize / "
I have found that, the forward slash "/" means the mount point of the hard disk! I don't know how and when that happened because I don't normally use the desktop for anything. The files on this desktop are limited to very few albums of pictures.
I have already done a back up of those and other misc files on an external drive.
But the question remains.... How do I change the mount point of the internal hard disk????
It has been haunting me now for several hours, and to my dismay I have not gotten anywhere with my research. I have searched the internet high and low, so my last option was to reach out to someone who might have had the same or similar problem as I have now.
Like I said anyone that has any insight on this or solution, I would be eternally grateful.

Here's the deal: You cannot even think about updating until you resolve the main issue - a corrupted system and/or hard drive. Updating a corrupted system will likely render your computer unusable, so you need to focus on the real problem.
You have two possibilities: 1. Your hard drive is OK but your OS isn't; 2. Your hard drive isn't OK and your OS isn't.
To approach possibility (1) try this:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
If your issue is (2) then you must first replace your hard drive if it's failing. If it isn't failing but is not repairable then you will need to erase the drive then reinstall OS X.

  • Having issue restarting database after switching mount point

We needed to change the mount point of the disk that has our mount points, so instead of going to /opt, it going to /opt/san/mdb4. I have created a control file to use to start up the database, but I'm still having issues. Here is part of the control file:
CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE SET DATABASE "INVEST" RESETLOGS NOARCHIVELOG
    MAXLOGFILES 64
    MAXLOGMEMBERS 2
    MAXDATAFILES 254
    MAXINSTANCES 16
    MAXLOGHISTORY 1815
    LOGFILE
    GROUP 1 (
    '/opt/san/mdb4/db02/oradata/INVEST/redo01a.log',
    '/opt/san/mdb4/db03/oradata/INVEST/redo01b.log'
    ) SIZE 50M,
    etc....
    DATAFILE
    '/opt/san/mdb4/db02/oradata/INVEST/XXX.dbf',
    '/opt/san/mdb4/db03/oradata/INVEST/XXX01.dbf',
    '/opt/san/mdb4/db07/oradata/INVEST/XXX02.dbf',
    '/opt/san/mdb4/db07/oradata/INVEST/XXX03.dbf',
    '/opt/san/mdb4/db03/oradata/INVEST/XXX04.dbf',
    '/opt/san/mdb4/db03/oradata/INVEST/XXX05.dbf',
    '/opt/san/mdb4/db03/oradata/INVEST/XXX06.dbf',
    etc...
    CHARACTER SET UTF8
All of the files are in the correct spot. I have also edited the init.ora file so that the directories are correct. This is the error that I get every time:
CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE SET DATABASE "INVEST" RESETLOGS NOARCHIVELOG
    ORA-01503: CREATE CONTROLFILE failed
ORA-00449: background process 'DBW0' unexpectedly terminated with error 7446
ORA-07446: sdnfy: bad value '' for parameter .
I am running Oracle 8.1.7 on Sun Solaris 8 (SunOS 5.8).
Does anyone have any idea what is going on? Let me know.

According to error message you have syntax error in your create statement. double check it.
ORA-07446: sdnfy: bad value 'string' for parameter string.
Cause: The directory specified as the value for the stated parameter could not be used.
Action: Make sure the directory you have specified is a valid directory/file specification.

  • Free Space on Oracle Mount Points

    Hi,
In my production environment,  which is on ECC 5.0 on HPUX and Oracle DB, my mount point for the Oracle DB files has reached 90% plus......
What is the amount of free space that should be available on these mount points at any point of time. Will there be a performance issue in the above case.
Inputs on this will be appreciated.
    Regards
    Alfred D'Souza

    Hello Alfred,
    > What is the amount of free space that should be available on these mount points at any point of time. Will there be a performance issue in the above case.
Personally i try to keep 4 GB free space for each sapdata (for big systems), for smaller i only keep 1 GB.
Performance issues depends on your storage. If you have SAN storage with caches.. performance will be not affected, but if you have local disks it depends on the data striping and the i/o intensive actions.
But in general i say, the performance will be not affected by the free space.. it will only be affacted by the i/o actions and the distributed data over all sapdatas.

  • CRM Upgrade 2007 to 7.0 EHP1 / Mount point language Issues

    Hi All,
I am working on the CRM upgrade in our landscape (CRM2007 to CRM7.0 with EHP1), Source environment is windows 2008 and SQL 2005.
I am currently in the configuration road map -  While giving the mount points, its asking for language DVD for CRM and for language AR.
However I tried the languages under this label numbers (51036861 and also 51036853) - But no luck for any of this softwares. And its keep on telling the below message in the mount point screen
the  mount point ' X:\upgrade_softwares\CRM\51036861' cannot be acccessed - Please enter the mount point for the DVD titled language DVD(s) for proudct CRM and language AR
    Steps taken :
Its clearly stated cannot be accessed, I thought it must be a permission problem and gave everyone access to the folder , still the same answer. Even I gave the label.ASC as the mount point - but its not working for that as well.
And I thought, it must be a software problem, So I used the other software 51036853 - the error remains the same
Anyone have input on this? Highly appreciable if you share your suggestions
    Regards
    Robin
