Mount XFS on mac

Hey guys,
i had a lacie edmini disk that broke a few days ago. So i opened the box and pulled out the disk and plugged it into a generic usb box. So now i have access to the drive but the partition that i want from the disk is in the xfs format. I havnt had any luck on mounting the drive
So my question for you - Do you know of any software that'll allow me to mount an xfs partition within OSX?
My backup plan must be to run it off a linux live cd but it would be nice to get it out within osx... please let me know! thanks

You can run Linux on a Mac via several emulation and virtualization options as well as directly. One of those options may offer you the ability to do XFS. Emulation and virtualization options are offered here*:
http://www.macmaps.com/macosxnative.html#WINTEL
Some Unix operating systems available for the Mac are here*:
http://www.macmaps.com/otheros.php
If installing Linux on a Mac without emulation or virtualization that doesn't provide its own PC formatted environment, you'll need to format an external hard drive if it can be mounted on the Mac, or format the Mac a different file system (erasing its contents) to install Linux. Contact the Mac on Linux vendor to ask how this can be done.

  • My Windows synched ipod has stopped mounting on my Mac

I know variants of this topic have already been posted so I apologise for that but this problem is a bit different.
I have a windows synched 20GB ipod photo. I was pulling off my ipod files to my G4 powerbook using (ahem) ipod rip when i accidentally unplugged my ipod halfway through.
Ever since then, when i connect my ipod to my powerbook through USB, it appears as a hard drive and in itunes for about 20 seconds and then disappears, and the do not disconnect symbol on my ipod goes and returns to normal.
my question is, how do i get my ipod to stay mounted to my powerbook so i can actually do stuff with it? I have already tried re-setting which didn't work. Is it a question of restoring my ipod? and if so, would i have to do this on my PC? any help would be much appreciated as all i want to do is synch my ipod with my shiny powerbook and not my horrible PC!

It may give you a surprise answer. Try to do a Restore with a PC, once it has been completed, connect it back with your Mac (you may need to put it into disk mode if it cant mount with your Mac), then
    For Mac computer
    1. Open the disk utility, hope your iPod appears there (left hand side), highlight it
    2. Go to Tab “Partition”, click either “Delete” or “Partition”, if fails, skip this step and go to 3
    3. Go to Tab “Erase” , choose Volume Format as “MAC OS Extended (Journaled), and click Erase, again if fails, skip it and go to 4
    4. Same as step 3, but open the “Security Options....” and choose “Zero Out Data” before click Erase. It will take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
    5. Eject your iPod and do a Reset
    6. Open the iTunes 7 and click “Restore”

  • WD My Passport for Mac won't mount on my Mac Pro

My 1TB external hard drive is less than six months old and was working fine; now won't mount on my Mac. I don't remember disconnecting it without ejecting it but I do think I got a message about needing to eject before disconnecting. I checked in the forum for a possible solution and tried connecting it to a PC laptop; I could see it to eject it but it didn't show up anywhere else. I am not a computer expert! How can I access my files? I have a Mac Pro, Mac OS X ver. 10.6.8.

Historically, the problem has been that many USB-powered drives can't get enough power from a USB port after they begin to age. The Passport is bus-powered, getting all its power from a USB port. Not the best solution for a desktop computer.
To get such a drive going again, you need one of two workabouts:
    1) a powered USB hub (has its own power supply to make up the shortfall) that goes between the external drive and the computer.
    2) use a "Y" USB cable to get power from two USB ports simultaneously (such as http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/USB2AYMBPB/)
Also, WD uses an odd proprietary formatting scheme that is of itself a problem area. WD makes very good bare drives but the enclosures into which they put them to make an external drive are not very good and not particually Mac-Friendly. The formatting makes them harder to use.
Once you get  the files you need off the external,  consider erasing and reformating it to Mac Extended Journaled using Disk Utility. That often makes the drive more reliable without having to revert to USB hubs or special cables. It gets rid of the proprietary formatting that seem to contribute to the problems.
I have three external drives. All have WD bare drives inside but none are in WD encosures. By far the best enclosures for Mac external drives are those from OWC:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
I have two of the desktop model shown and one of its portable version for my MacBook Pro. All three have given me superb service and zero problems.

  • P2 AJ-SPD850 and P2 store won't mount to G5 Mac

I need some help please. First the facts:
    Mac G5 running 10.4.6
    QT 7.1.1
    FCP 5.04
    p2 AJ-SPD850 with firewire option
    p2 store
P2 700 camera with firewire option
Alright. Nothing will mount to the mac. I've put the drivers in from the CDs, from Shanes site and nothing. Nothing from the firewire or the USB. Is there something I'm not doing correctly.
The deck when I go into FCP and go to log and capture I see the deck and can run it. It also outputs put won't mount. So I can import the footage. Please help!

If your saying that you think that the deck should "mount" like a drive would... it doesn't work that way. i.e. if you can capture and record, you don't have a problem, do you?
Not sure though about all of this, just looked at the PDF of the deck's specs, and it says that it should mount like a drive would.... thru USB... maybe having both FW and USB connected defeats this? tried it?

    Hi Judy,
I find Optical Drives short lived, especially on Macs, but have you tried a CD Cleaner Disc?
    One other fix in 10.4.x...
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • After OS 10.4.6 update, mounting my other Mac - drives have lock icon. Why?

I have a Powerbook and a desktop G5. I share files between them and mount drives (my home directory) on both desktops to easily move files back and forth. Recently after I updated to 10.4.6, when I mount my home directory on either machine (from the other machine), the drive (folder) has a lock icon next to it making it READ only.
What can I do to remove that lock so I can WRITE to my home directory on each Mac? Thanks!
    Robert

When I do Command-I, I see that I have read/write access for the local drive - depending on the machine I am sitting at - and the other networkeded drives allow read only.
I guess the question is - how does the system know a user with the same username and password are actually the same person?

  • Can I get my G4 to mount on a mac mini?

I have a G4 Desktop [PCI-graphics model] with 17 inch CRT monitor & G4 iBook. A router for my Broadband & use Ethernet file sharing between them.
I want to buy a Mac Mini & use my G4 desktop like an external Hard dive to the Mac Mini linked to my monitor [or get a new monitor]. But I don't want two monitors.
I can use a Firewire cable between the G4 Desktop & iBook by holding down the T-Key on my iBook [Target Disk Mode] but cant do it the another way around. I cant hold down the T-Key on my G4, because nothing happens. I look on apple website, and found out that my model, G4 PCI-graphics is not supported for Target Disk Mode.
How could I use Ethernet file sharing with only one monitor. Anyone got any ideas how to mount the G4 on a mac mini without getting a extra monitor?

    Hello,
Yes, you can share your disk drive and screen; you can even control the G4 from the Mini.
The best solution (which costs money) is to purchase Apple's Remote Desktop; the second, (free but not as good) solution is to download a program called Chicken of the VNC (google for it).
    Hope this helps!

  • Help! Can't mount iPod to Mac OR PC, and neither Restore or Disk Mode work

My 5th Generation iPod is not being recognized by my Windows or iTunes whenever I try to mount it, nor is it recognized by my friend's Mac or iTunes whenever I try to mount it on his. Because I cannot get my iPod to connect to a computer, I cannot Restore it. Also, I have tried to get both computers to recognize my iPod by putting into Disk Mode, but my iPod screen only displays the "OK to Disconnect" screen (and neither computer recognizes it.)
The only idea I can think of is to Restore it without using a computer (if that is even possible.) I am open to any ideas though.
My iPod is past its warranty, so I would greatly appreciate any help, advice, or suggestions short of sending it in to Apple. Thanks in advance.

    Problem solved!
I let my iPod die COMPLETELY down, and then I took it out of its protective case and plugged it into my computer, and it is syncing properly now. I don't know why fixed it (because my case may have been preventing it from plugging in completely) but everything is fine now.

  • External drives no longer mounting on other Mac since Leopard Install

I have recently upgraded my old iMac to a Mac Mini with Leopard, however since using my Iomega 320GB External Hard Disk and also my 2GB Kingston USB Stick on my Mini they no longer mount on my old iMac, it's like Leopard has somehow created a volume on them ensuring they won't mount elsewhere anymore.
I still have lots of files on my old iMac that I need to transfer over to my Mini so this is a problem to me.
    Any ideas?

  • Failed to mount partition of MAC OS Extended (HFS+)

Dear all, please help me save me, as well as my External hard disk !!
As a matter of fact, my 1TB External hard disk has three partition: MAC OS, NTFS and FAT32. All of the partitions work very well in the past. However, I just discovered that my MAC OS Extended (HFS+) format "MAC OS" partition could not be mounted, although my another two partitions were seemingly fine. I have tried to repair the partition with the Disk Utility but I failed. I have no ideas that why would this happen to my hard disk since I have not done anything to my hard disk and my MAC OS partition.
Please let me know if there is anyone know how to to solve the problem and recover my MAC OS partition. I just want to get back the data inside my MAC OS partition. Million Thanks!!
(P.S. I have only done two things before I discovered that my MAC OS partition was no longer working.
    1) I have updated the Apple Security Update 2015-002 when my hard disk was plugged into my Macbook air.
    2) I have tried to move some files from my "NTFS" partition to another external hard disk. But I failed because of unknown reason.)

What exactly shows in System Profiler>Hardware>USB for those drives?
Boot from the Install Disc & see if they show up, not grayed out in Disk Utility.
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
We were thinking along the same lines. While at home I dug up a firewire enclosure and put a bootable GUID formatted drive in it (that I had in one of the usb enclosures) and started her computer holding down the option key and then chose to boot from the external firewire. All usb drives are now mounting upon connection. I asume that her drive has bad sectors on it (even though the SMART status says it's OK) and is not loading all the drivers properly for USB to mount. I was suspicious from the beginning that the OS was corrupt when she first had me look at it. It was at that point that I booted it in target mode, connected to my Macbook Pro, and then CCC'd to a usb drive that I had. I then had a couple of difficulties installing the new OS. Should have known......
I am now going to put a new drive in it for her and she'll be up and running.
Thanks so much for your help and thoughts that got me thinking as well.

  • Used Western Digital 500 GB Harddrive mounted on another MAC

It worked fine and mounted right away. I copied the files I wanted and then ejected.
The problem is that I can't get it to remount back to my computer. I've connected it to the same Firewire port, nothing.
    I tried logging on, nothing.
    I tried restarting, nothing.
Are there any other things I could try, short of Disk Utility/reformating the drive?

If you have not already, you should try resetting PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and if that does not help, resetting SMC (power management)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
which is basically disconnecting the iMac from power (and all cables), and then reconnecting it, following a precise procedure. That may reset your hardware.
FireWire ports are known to go out. It should be plug and play with the iMac turned ON and running, but something like a short in the cable or connection can make the port go bad. I use a FireWire hub for anything I connect and disconnect often, and leave cables connected (while the Mac is turned on) in the direct FireWire ports.
If your iMac model as two ports, you should check the other one. If the drive is FireWire 400 and the other port is 800, you can use a cable like this
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/1394B96036/
    or an adapter

  • Mounting CIFS on MAC with large file support

    Dear All,
We are having issues copying large files ( > 3.5 GB) from MAC to a CIFS Share (smb mounted on MAC) whereby the copy fails if files are larger than 3.5 GB in size and hence I was wondering if there is any special way to mount CIFS Shares (special option in the mount_smbfs command perhaps ) to support large file transfer?
Currently we mount the share using the command below
    mount_smbfs //user@server/<share> /destinationdir_onMAC

If you haven't already, I would suggest trying an evaluation of DAVE from Thursby Software. The eval is free, fully functional, and supported.
DAVE is able to handle large file transfer without interruption or data loss when connecting to WIndows shared folders. If it turns out that it doesn't work as well as you like, you can easily remove it with the uninstaller.
(And yes, I work for Thursby, and have supported DAVE since 1998)
