Mountain breaks ARD on clients?

So, after upgrading some of my desktops to Mountain Lion. I am no longer able to remotely manage them with ARD.
I have the latest version on my machine, but I am no longer able to connect to Clients running Mountain Lion.
I get the error:
The Remote Management is on and set properly in System Preferences. Everything looks as it should.
I can still connect and manage Lion Machines no problem.
Please advise.

The admin Machine is also on Mtn Lion, so both on 3.6
So, i got it going, here's how i did it:
On the client I had to log in as root and unchecked the Remote Management and re-checked Remote Management.
That must have updated or tweaked the preference, but now it's working properly.
Strange, but that seems to have fixed it..

  • True IP address for ARD remote client via IPObserver [newbie]

    I have had success managing LAN clients via ARD, but now my situation is different.
    I want to still be able to provide ARD support via a network address specific to a workstation from outside the LAN, and the IP address I have tried does not connect. I am deriving the address from the IP Observer utility that I had my client launch on their system. [it is not the obvious 192.168.1.xxx address from DHCP]. I have confirmed that the Sharing attributes are correct on the client system, although it might be a 2.2 version [running 3.1 admin]. Based on a test, I believe the IP Observer address is the internet IP location of the router [not the actual router LAN IP], not the client.
    The IP address indicates that it is in the correct domain [Roadrunner, NYC], but the client-specific address is inaccurate. Is it because the client is setup through a DHCP router and switch? will they need a static IP? Can they somehow reveal their station-specific IP via an iChat connection log? should I try to address the client though a different port?
    I am new to this extension of ARD, so bear with the obviousness of the query to some of you.

  • Help needed from ARD expert : Client  Status always VNC  ON

    Hello,
    Lorna has posted the following problem which I have also encountered and I could not solve it by re-installing ARD and upgrading to version 2.2:
    I administer a small office network (all 10.3.9) and I am running ARD 2.2 Admin on a G4 Powerbook, controlling a number of other laptops and some desktop machines on a mixed airport/wired ethernet network.
    On one G4 desktop I just re-installed OS 10.3.9 using the Apple Sotware Updater and since then I get the "VNC ON" status on that Mac. The other Macs work fine. I have deleted this machine from the ARD Master List, and I tre-defined it,but all in vain. It always shows a VNC server status.
    Obviously, the ARD admin does not "see" that the ARD client is active and I can only connect via VNC.
    Does anybody know what could be the cause of this problem ?
    Thank you so much

    Hello,
    I could locate the culprit in the meantime:
    I had a hunch that Netbarrier X, which is installed on my Powerbook could be causing the problem. Although I believed I had switched Netbarrier off ("No restrictions") for troubeshooting purposes the host entries in the so-called "stop list" remain active. And there I had one single entry : 127.0.0.1. Deleting my "own" host resolved the problem. I don't understand why the other wireless Macs still worked but I am not a network specialist.
    Netbarrier's illogical behaviour has caused me other troubles in the past (such as not being able to print because the cupsd app was in a stop-list!)
    I think that I shall now get rid of it, it's doing more harm than good.
    Thanks for responding.

  • Mountain Lion, ARD Admin, and Screen Share Issue

    We recently upgraded one of our Labs to OSX 10.8.2.  The guy who teachs in that Lab then brought to my attention that he can no longer share his screen with computers in the Lab which are not logged in.  If the machine is sitting at the Login screen he cannot share to them until after the students login. Control works fine through ARD, but not sharing.  All clients have ARD version 3.6.2 installed.  ARD Admin is version 3.6.1 and I can replicate in other buildings/locations.
    Attempts to share with a 10.8.2 machine (one or many) which don't have anyone logged in will by all indications in ARD look like the sharing is happening on the Administrator machine, but you can visually see the screen is still sitting at the login prompt.  The display on the machine to be controlled flashes for a second when the Admin clicks Share and it flashes again when the Admin unshares their screen.  The same test run against a 10.6.8 client(still have a group in th next lab over) doesn't have the same problem.
    My initial thought was this may be some sort of feature, but I don't see any where to turn it off. I've searched around, but I don't think I'm searching with the right terms for this issue. Any thoughts?

    I've never been able to share my screen to computers that no one was logged in on; and i've been using ARD sense Mac OS X 10.4. I'm not saying it hasn't been possible; I've just never been able to get a computer to do that.
    My work around is use send unix command as user root. I have a unix script that basicaly triggures and applescript to type a user / pass to login of a generic account. it takes about a minute to run. and if some one is logged in, it dosen't do any thing to that computer.
    Heck it can even be set to be the default send unix command. so all the the user has to do is select all computers, click send unix, and click send.
    Some thing like this:
    if [[ "$(who | grep console)" == "" ]]; then osascript -e '
    tell application "System Events"
    keystroke return
    keystroke "a" using command down
    keystroke "PASSWORD"
    keystroke tab
    keystorke "a" using command down
    keystroke "USERNAME"
    keystroke return
    keystroke return
    keystroke return
    end tell';

  • Changing ARD's client IP Address

    Hello,
    I've tried sifting through the ARD forum, but was unable to find a topic that related to mine (plus there were too many to sift through).
    Here's my issue. I have a dual-homed hosts. ARD is selecting the 192.168.1.101 (which is the nic that my VPN is using), but I need it to use 192.168.1.102. I know it'd be easy to have the VPN use the other NIC, but I'd like to know if you can tell ARD to use a different NIC/IP.
    If you can point me in the right direction on how tell the ARD client to use xxx.xxx.xxx.102, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Btw, I'm running ARD2.
    Thanks in advance.

    After further research, it appears that method 4 will work. It requires modifying the appsbase.htm file and Form to capture the IP parameter and set it as a global but Jinitiator will pass parameters. This method also requires a DAD and plsql agent in order to execute the pl/sql stored procedure that does the capture and redirect (as per the Metalink notes) but that's not difficult to create using the OAS admin tool. The big drawback to this method is that it requires changes to proprietary software that may change during the next upgrade.
    Method 5 will also work. It appears that one may have to get the hostname first and then get the IP address by name if using Java on the local host, however.
    e.g.,
    String result = "";
    InetAddress addr = InetAddress.getLocalHost();
    String hostname = addr.getHostName();
    InetAddress addr2 = InetAddress.getByName(hostname);
    byte[] i pAddr2 = addr2.getAddress();
    for (int i=0; i < ipAddr2.length; i++) // Convert to dot representation.
    { if (i > 0)  result += ".";
    result += ipAddr2&0xFF;

  • Mountain Lion (server and client) and iOS Notes syncing

    I run an IMAP server on my Mac mini running Mountain Lion 10.8.3 and Server 2.2.1. I have an email account on this server and can access and update Mail on both my MacBook Air (Mac OS X 10.8.3) and my iPhone (iOS 6.1.3) and see the results on the other device.  However, I cannot get Notes to sync.
    I created a note on my iPhone but it does not appear on my MacBook.  This is the only account that has Notes enabled on my iPhone; if I turn Notes off for this account the note disappears and comes back when turn them back on again.
    I created a note on my MacBook but it does not appear on my iPhone.  This is the only account that has Notes enabled on my MacBook; if I turn Notes off for this account the note disappears and comes back when turn them back on again.
    How can I get Notes to sync between my OS X and iOS devices?
    NOTE: Helpful as you may try to be, I am not looking for alternatives to Notes.  Syncing to any IMAP server should work and there is nothing to say it doesn't work so I want to get it working for me.  It is all about storing my data on my server and none of the other options address this.

    After trying everything else, I discovered the answer by just "playing around:" You need to allow clear text passwords for Mail.  Once I'd made this change my Notes automatically appeared and stay in sync on all of my devices (iMac, MacBook Air and iPhone).  This is still working after the update to OS X Mavericks and Server 3.

  • Location of ARD client software

    I upgraded the client to ARD3 on several ARD2 admin computers. Now Remote Desktop 2 won't open on these ARD2 admin computers. In order to still be able to use ARD2 on these ARD2 admin computers (until we get to purchase more licenses to update all of our ARD2 admin computers), I think I need to remove the ARD3 client and install back the ARD2 client. What is the location of the client? What other files, if any, do I need to remove before installing the ARD2 client back on the ARD2 admin computers?

    Use the instructions here to remove the ARD 3 client. Then you can download the 2.2 client here; it says update, but it will install from scratch.
    Regards.

  • Unable to copy to clients with ARD 3.8

    Our school is unable to using ARD 3.8 with all clients running on Mavericks 10.9.5 with all updates.
    While using Spotlight search we find files, but are unable to copy them to the admin machine.
    The scenario is this:
    - I search for files on users desktop "/Users/student/Desktop/" using the Spotlight feature
    - Look for mp3 audio files
    - Select all results and press "Copy To This Computer."
    - Select Desktop as my destination and start to copy the files
    Problem:
    The first file will copy fast, but the second will stall sat 0%.
    After a about 1 minute timeout the second file fails.
    The third file copies as fast as the first.
    The fourth file stalls again at 0%.
    After a about 1 minute timeout the second file fails.
    This pattern repeats.
    Tried these fixes:
    - Updating Maverick host and client with all available updates.
    - Update Apple Remote Desktop from 3.7 -> 3.8
    - Deleted associated preferences with ARD database
    - Opening com.apple.RemoteDesktop.plist and replacing all hostname with ignorehostname,etc., via recommendation from community poster (Bryan).
    Question:
    Is anyone else having problems with this? Copying files from admin machine with ARD to clients also exhibits this problem.
    Appreciate your help friends.
    Take care,

  • Question about ARD 2.2, Rosetta

    Hi all,
    I use ARD 2.2 at work, and have replaced my G4 Powerbook a new MacBookPro. I've installed ARD 2.2, and figured out how to make it run using the "Run Under Rosetta" checkbox on ARDAgent.app and it seems fine, although installing packages hasn't worked right so far.
    When I enable Apple Remote Desktop in my System Sharing preferences ( on the MBP ) the Remote Desktop client runs under Rosetta. If I'm running only the client and doing on management I'd rather run Natively, so I un-checked the "Run Under Rosetta" checkbox of ARDAgent.app and tried again, and found that it still runs under Rosetta.
    When I view the Info of ARDAgent.app, it is a Universal App. Did I overwrite some component of the Remote Desktop Client when I installed ARD 2.2 that forces ARDAgent.app to run under Rosetta? Is there any way to have ARDAgent.app run natively? I never ran ARDAgent.app prior to installing ARD 2.2 so I don't know if this is correct behavior or not.
    My company is thrifty to the extreme and I'm not sure when an upgrade to ARD 3 will happen, so ARD 2.2 may be our environment for some time.
    Any help is appreciated, thanks. Sorry for the long post!
    -John

    I've discovered that removing the rmdb.bundle from /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement allows the Universal ARDAgent.app to run natively.
    Then when ARD starts up it reinstalls the missing rmdb.bundle. It seems that rmdb doesn't exit gracefully when invoked by ARD; however it does exit when invoked by Remote Desktop sharing. And if the rmdb.bundle exists in /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement it will be started by Remote Desktop sharing no matter if it is running natively or not.
    So the only way I can run Remote Desktop sharing natively is remove rmdb.bundle, which essentially break ARD.
    Well, I'd rather have ARD working under Rosetta than run Apple Remote Desktop sharing natively, and I can start/stop Desktop Sharing to get rid of the rmdb processes once I'm through using ARD.
    Thanks for listening , cheers!

  • Changing the listening ports of ARD

    I know how to change the listening port of SSH from 22 to some other number.
    Is there any way to configure ARD (in plist maybe?) so that it can try connecting to SSH on a non-default port number.
    Whilst I know how to secure SSH (not properly secured in OS X by default) I would rather change it's listening port to avoid the traffic that will simply try to bruteforce in.
    So if I edit ssh_config and sshd_config on my Macs will this break ARD? Or if these conf files are properly edited (ssh_cnfig on client changed to port 22222 and sshd_config on server changed to 22222) will ARD connect seamlessly?
    In short does ARD absolutely need Remote Login (SSH) to be running on the default port 22?

    hmm okay, but i don't need to port forward 22 from my router to my mac to allow ARD access, only ports 5900, 5988 and 3283.
    That improves things since 22 is not visible to the WAN.
    Still, I'd like to know the answer to my question in the previous post.
    And what about re-mapping VNC from 5900 (another obvious target although prob not vulnerable to VNC exploits since I expect Apple have modified this service and somehow hooked it into the authentication of the ssh protocol)?

  • I can no longer run reports of my client computers

    RDC 3.2.2 I recently need to run some reports of all my client computers. First, I attempted to run report of several computers. It never got beyond "Waiting for report data", so, I attepted to do separate clients, one at a time. Same result. All users are upgraded to the current client. Users are on a 1000BaseT network. Thought it may be 10.5.6 update related, but not all of my users are on Leopard. I have testing a variety of different clinet configs and I cannot generate a report.

    Starting on May 29th, 2008, I noticed that some of the computers that have been added to ARD were showing up with their IP address as 0.0.0.0. Some of the systems could have reports done for them while other would not. At the time, out of 140 computers currently listed, only 120 returned reports.
    After troubleshooting I called Apple to attempt to figure out where this problem may reside. Apple indicated that the IP numbers would get zeroed out when another device takes over the IP address of the client computer. This made sense since we were setup via DHCP. They could not determine why the reporting was not functioning without further troubleshooting through Enterprise support. This would require funding to get additional support.
    On January 22nd, 2009 I called Apple support back and started the support via their Enterprise support. The technician asked if we were using spanning tree with our network switches. I verified with the network team that we are using multicast spanning tree for Semantic Ghost. The technician also asked that I set up ARD on another test computer to see if the problem occurs with that system as well.
    On February 5th I setup both a second system for ARD Admin and a test client computer. In Mid February I set up the SQL database used by ARD to be accessed but other applications, such as a PHP webpage. This would allow me to see what information was in the database without needing to use ARD admin.
    By March 5, I had completed my tests and determined that the information is still being lost using this second computer setup. Keep in mind that the test client computer had been turned off by mid February so its network IP number would be release for another device to use. A few days before I had created a second account on the test ARD admin computer and re-imported the original list of systems used when this test started. This second account did not have the ARD test client computer added into ARD admin. This would allow for reports to be collected for a few days on this system. I then went back to the original account for ARD admin on March 5 and attempted to run the report for the test client. In ARD admin I was not able to acquire any report information. I was, however, able to see the data using the PHP webpage I have created earlier.
    I called Apple back to continue troubleshooting this problem. Remember that we had paid for support for this problem, $199. The technician indicated that the case had been resolved and closed. I explained that the issue was not resolved and troubleshooting was still ongoing. The technician remained adamant that the case was resolved and would not open a new case for further support.
    I spoke with my Technical Director in regards to this. We both called Apple Enterprise support back to see if we could get further support for this unresolved issue. The technician did give us a bit of support, however, he continued to insist that we were adding the client computers in via IP and this was causing our problems. We explained exactly how we have been adding computers into ARD admin; by scanning them through our network and dragging them to the main list, not by adding them by direct IP. The technician then continued to be unclear as to how to go about correcting this situation of lost data. He indicated that when the client computer's IP was taken over by another device the only way to get the client to report again was to remove and re-add the client back in.
    According to the document "ARD 3.1 Admin Guide.pdf"; Chapter 8 page 104, in the section titled "Installing Software on Offline Computers", paragraph 2, it states "When the client comes online, it contacts the Task Server and notifies it of its network state and any setting changes (like a DHCP-assigned IP address change)." Even after reading this statement to the technician he still was not clear as to why the client computers did not update their IP information correctly (from their current 0.0.0.0 IP) when reconnected back to the network.
    Because information is continuing to become lost Apple Remote Desktop is not meeting the needs of our department and the community college for tracking the Macintosh hardware currently in use. It may take an extended time to retrieve requested information if this data does not get reported on in ARD admin. Currently, one of my coworkers is in the process of creating a whitepaper to include alternatives for asset management for the Macintosh community.
