Mountain Lion 10.8.1 Update BRICKED My Macbook Air

On my previously perfectly functioning 2011 Macbook Air (1 month out of warranty, yay!).  Saw that there was an update available for OSX, clicked Update, and it told me it needed to restart.
After reboot, nothing.  No Apple logo, just a blank gray screen.  I waited a couple of hours to restart (holding down the power button), thinking it might just be taking a while to apply the update.  After powering up again, nothing but a gray screen.  Tried safe mode and resetting PRAM, nothing.
Took the machine to the Genius Bar and they couldn't do any of the typical fixes to make it boot either.  Said they had to send it off for off-site service (for a flat fee of $280).  What choice did I have?  Apparently it's fixed now, and I can't wait to hear what kind of excuse they have for how their update didn't kill my computer.
If it isn't hardware-based, I will be very unhappy, though I'm sure they'll find some way to blame it on hardware.

Apparently they ended up replacing both the logic board and the SSD, so $280 is kind of a bargain, unless of course you consider that the machine is barely over a year old.
Thanks for your attention mende1.

  • Mountain Lion 10.8.2 update failed on MacBook Pro

This morning I used the Mac App Store to apply the latest Mountain Lion update along with Evernote and XCode updates. They installed, prompted me to restart and when I did I was greeted with a progress bar during startup. This gets about a quarter of the way through, then dissappears and the MacBook turns off. When I power on the laptop again, I get the progress bar again, it gets a quarter of the way through and powers off again.
This is the first time I've had a problem with my Mac in over 2 years so I'm not too sure where to even begin diagnosing the problem.
    Any help is appreciated.

I had a similar issue, but the update wouldn't install via the app store, it just kept saying something must be wrong with the file, so I downloaded it from Apple's website. That was a mistake. When I installed it from the downloaded file, it corrupted my machine, as it seems it has with yours.
I tried booting into the recovery partition and running disk repar, but that told me I needed to backup and buy a new hard drive. Which I found funny since everything's been running fine up until the install (I'm on a MBP Mid-2010).
Long story short, I ended up having to reformat and restore from a TimeMachine backup. Everything's working fine now, and disk utility is reporting no problems.

after the restart compiuter it's recognizes and works, but after a while i have the same problem again...

    Hi,
I would try a PRAM reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.

When trying to update getting (error surle error domain error-1100). It started yesterday, any help would be great. I have Mountain Lion 10.8.1 on a new macbook pro with retina display.

There are many people suffering from this problem right now (including me). It appears to be a server issue. Just wait and try checking for updates again tomorrow.
Some things I have heard indicate that this may be a regional problem, though what parts of the world are affected I don't know yet. A few people have been helped by deleting the following preference file (paste the path into the Go -> Go to Folder window in the Finder to locate it), though most have not:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate.plist
Note that if you are trying to download iTunes 10.7, that can be found here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1576
Also, note that there is no reason to be anxious to get it, as the only thing added in iTunes 10.7 is compatibility with iOS 6, which will not be available until the 19th, and the new iPhone, which will not be available until later as well. The new iTunes that was announced is iTunes 11, which is also not yet available.

  • Mountain Lion 10.8.3 update

After updating my MacBook Pro 6,2 to Mountain Lion 10.8.3 update (earlier I had 10.8.2), only having Dropbox open it switches to nVidia graphics card instead of remaining on Intel one.
Even after Dropbox updated its app this didn't happen, so it looks like 10.8.3 update treats Dropbox as a "powerful" app.
The solution is pretty easy, close Dropbox and open when it's needed. But I've never had this problem.
I hope Apple or Dropbox can fix that to avoid more consumption for nothing.

According to their latest update, Dropbox have indicated that they ARE aware of the issue and ARE working on resolving it.  In the meantime, the post also describes how to downgrade to the last v1 release (1.6.18) and disable the auto-updating feature, if you need an immediate fix.

  • If I upgrade to Lion now will mountain lion be a free update?

If I upgrade to Lion now will mountain lion be a free update?

I really hope that Apple will do the right/ethical thing and give recent (within the 8-9 months) purchasers of macbook, macbook pros, macbook air, and people who just bought single OS copies of Lion OS-either a free copy of Mountain Lion or a huge discount price on the OS ($5.00 max ). Let's be honest here....Mountain Lion is the patched up Lion. Apple couldn't release an update large enough to fix the problems with Lion so they instead created a new OS. They know that is the truth.
As someone who  just bought a macbook pro that came pre-installed with Lion (had no choice really but to accept that or completly wipe it clean and try to put on Snow Leopard, but I was hesitant to because of being warned not to try that on the pre-installed macbook pros.) I don't feel it is right that I would have to pay for another OS when I was already supposed to have a functional OS included with my recent major purchase. Let's think about it for second: when I got a powerbook g4 around 2004/05 I paid about the same price as this macbook pro i now own. With that I got the lap top, the installer OS cds (a functional OS I  might add), manual, stickers, a vga adapter, s-output cord, ac adapter, ac extension cable, and phone cord. With the 2011 macbook pro I got the laptop, manual, stickers, ac adapter, ac extension cable, and cloth to wipe off my screen. I didn't get any s-video output or vga adapter, and I'm actually glad that they didn't give me any lion installer cds because that would have been a waste of optical disc. What came free in a box over 6 years ago (vga adapter display port) is now $30 extra at the apple store. Also, no s-video. So I can't hook it up to an external monitor or tv. (and no, I can't just go and buy a fake one on amazon because I have analog so i would on top of that buy a pc converter box. ) I honestly wouldn't mind buying the converter box... had I gotten a free vga display adapter with my laptop. Also let's compare a minor difference in applecare: back then I got a receipt and a box with some info and a applecare test cd that was good for diagnostic utility testing. while maybe a bit old fashioned, I still like having cds that I can use for testing problems. This time, I didn't get any info box or cds, or a receipt for that matter--well i did get an email saying I had extendedapple 3 year but I never had the chance to make a phone confirmation that proves I am in service. I feel that is a bit risky sending people home without a hard copy of your purchase. They could just claim you didn't buy it. maybe i'm just old fashioned that way. To be clear, i can't compare the actual service of applecare of present day and former because so far I haven't had enough use of it to compare it yet.
What I'm getting at is that with the money they saved on gypping me with included accessories and a function OS, surely they could afford to right the situation by giving me a free copy of the new OS Mountain Lion. I might add, that way back when I had my powerbook g4 I went into to apple's genius bar one day and was trying to get an issue fixed regarding the itunes razor phone I had just purchased (way back before iphone had just come out) the music wasn't transferring from my computer to my phone. The guy was very very nice and he said he couldn't fix the problem with the phone (the usb turned out to be damaged) and he upgraded my panther to tiger for free!
That is an example of good customer service. That is example of keeping loyal apple customers.
---also--I found something posted on another forum that I felt I just had to share that further demonstrates  examples of extrodinary past customer service from Apple:
    Posted: Tue Jul 27, 2004 2:35 am
I had the logic board in my iBook 800/12.1" (Nov. '02) replaced 3 times. After the 4th failure occured a couple of weeks ago, I called Apple Support and requested a replacement machine. They refused, and were fairly rude about it.
So, in a moment of desperation, I sent an email to Steve Jobs. I did not demand a replacement machine. I simply said that I was extremely displeased with the quality of my iBook and I would no longer be purchasing or advocating Apple products. I wished Mr. Jobs the best of luck in Apple's future endeavors.
Two days later, I received a call from Apple's Corporate Executive Relations team. The woman I spoke with apologized profusely for my troubles with the iBook. She explained the logic board replacement program to me in great detail, and then, without any prompting from me, asked if a new iBook G4 (as a replacement) would cause me to reconsider leaving the platform. **** yes. So, I'm typing this post on a brand new 1Ghz, 12.1" iBook G4
Needless to say, despite the trouble with the machine, and the heartburn of dealing with Apple Support - in the end I'm left feeling fairly impressed with Apple. In the end, they did the right thing, and kept a customer.

how can i retinstall back my OS X Mountain Lion after i mistake update with OS X Yosmite

If you Mac originally was shipped with ML, you can try Internet Recovery (Command+Opt+R) to re-install ML. Please backup your data first. Your internal disk may use CoreStorage rather than plain JHFS+ filesystem.

  • Just updated my iPad 2 to OS7 and now I can't connect it to iTunes 10 on my MacBook OS 10.5.8 My MacBook can't be updated to Mountain Lion as it is early 2008 white MacBook

Just updated my iPad 2 to OS7 and now I can't connect it to iTunes 10 on my MacBook OS 10.5.8
My MacBook is too old and  can't be updated to Mountain Lion as it is early 2008 white MacBook.
It all worked perfectly prior to updating the iPad 2 to OS7.
There were no cautions or warnings
    Are there any work arounds?
Can I uninstall OS7 and go back to OS6?
Rediculous thing is I can connect to iTunes on an old PC of the same age

Thanks for your comments but this doesn't help my situation at all.
Again Apple fails to provide backward support for its own products.
I could go to the trouble of hacking the MacBook and running Mountain Lion and iTunes 11 that way
I think I will just move across to a PC as a result of this Apple strategy and I think I will just give up on Apples short lived product strategy.
A laptop that lasts five years indicates a long lived product strategy.  Where they go wrong is to prevent backwards strategy when someone genuinely cannot live with ios7 like you. even the "unsupported" downgrade has now been blocked.
Don't go windows,  you will not get five good years from a dell or an asus. If you can't buy Mountain Lion for it,  get a new macbook, enjoy.

Any OS version of 10.8.4 or later has all features that are not OS depended. The plugins are one example. You probably haven't updated all versions of Logic Pro X to the latest one.

  • Why can't I get Mountain Lion version 10.8.3 on my MacBook?

I have Mountain Lion version 10.7.5 on my MacBook but when I check for software updates it tells me my computer is up to date.
I have MLV 10.8.3 on my iMac.

You have to Upgrade to 10.8, not update. 10.7 and 10.8 are different operating systems. Each has its own set of updates.
If you puchased Mountain Lion (10.8) for your iMac, then you can download and install Mountain Lion onto your MacBook (if it is compatible). If the iMac came with Mountain Lion preinstalled, you will need to purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store to get it on your MacBook.
