Mountain Lion 10.8.2. - such a dissappointment

When I bought a mid-2010 21,5" iMac in March 2011, I thought all problems with computers are past.
So they were, I had no problems with pre-installet Snow Leopard, which I ketp up-to date continuously. All updates were installed, and I never had any problems with my computer. Finally, I found a reliable computer and operating system.
I'm afraid this good situation went much worse after upgrading my operating system to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 about one week ago.
First, after downloading and installing the update, some applications launched on startup.
Next morning after installing Mountain Lion my wife tells me the computer won't wake from sleep. Nothing to do but a hard reset. The first one after having bought iMac in March 2011. After this, there have been many ones. Every day, after every sleep.
I spent yesterday reading discussion forums from the web, trying to find a solution. I have tried following things:
- Resetting the SMC by turning off the computer, taking all cords (Power cord, usb for printer and keyboard, Ethernet to Time Capsule) away, waiting more than 15 seconds and then reboot. The only problem before was in March '11, when bluetooth mouse was no found. Phoning to support helped, did the same then, and everything has been fine ever since.
- Resetting the PRAM by pressing Option-Command-P-R on startup.
- Opening System Settings, Choosing Network, removing old passwords from Wi-Fi Network, Disabling Wi-Fi, Removing Wi-Fi connection and estabilishing it anew.
- Changing System Settings, Network, Wi-Fi, Advanced, Hardware, MTU. Changed to 1453.
And guess what!
Computer gets smoothly to sleep mode, wakes up... but takes no commands, must be hard reseted.
This is so frustrating. More than ten times I have remembered this wisdom: "If your systems are stable and working, do not update or change it".
Does anyone have any idea, what is this all about! Until these days, I have believed Apple products are good and working. Now I am not so sure, anymore.
The worst thing is that before buying, downloading and installing Mountain Lion 10.8.2. my iMac worked perfectly using Snow Leopard. But about a month ago I bought an iPad, and thought iCoud would be useful. Well, this is dissappointment. iCloud brought only few good things, but Mountain Lion 10.8.2. made my good and reliable iMac like a lousy PC computer...
Too bad. I am very disappointed. My good and reliable iMac needs now hard resets, if I don't remember to turn it off every time I leave for a cup of coffee of something. What's even worse, I paid for this useless upgrade. Not much, but it's peculiar to pay for an update that makes your computer unreliable

Thank you for your advice.

  • Unable to see certain folders on server after upgrading to mountain lion

Hello, I recently upgraded from lion to mountain lion on my MacBook Pro.
With lion I would connect to the server at work through finder under shared. Now with mountina lion, the server still shows up but when I connect to it only shows 3 folders there now when there are a lot more than that in there. I finally was able to connect to the folder I needed by hitting command + K and tryping out the path with smb.
The folder appears as an external disk icon when I connect to it like this so I guess maybe mountain lion recategorizes it as such and no longer displays it in finder when I connect to the server. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Hello nikkjazz. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
The 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) supports USB storage devices that use a block size of 512 bytes ... and is true whether the device is formatted for HFS+, FAT16 or FAT32. If yours is not, then it may explain why you can see the folders when the drive is directly attached to the Mac, but not so when connected to the AEBSn.

  • If I replace my old iMac with a new one can I burn DVDs on an external drive using Mountain Lion or Toast?

My 2006 iMac is getting a bit long in the tooth and I was thinking of replacing it with a new one. However, Mac have not included an optical drive and I back up my photographs on DVD as well as external hard drives. I also supply DVDs of my work to friends etc.
Will I be able to burn to an external drive using Mountain Lion or other software such as Toast? Does the burn option still exist on the new machines?

    Hello,
You shouldn't have any problem, if you do just try Burn...

  • Just upgraded to mountain lion and my HP Laserjet p1102W won't connect

Just upgraded to mountain lion and my HP Laserjet p1102W to print (worked fine via USB with Snow Leopard; I never had set it up wirelessly, though had wanted to do so.)  HP site said if printer worked with Snow Leopard nothing would need to be done; update of drivers would be automatic within Mountain Lion upgrade.  No such luck.  My Macbook Pro and HP Printer are not talking to each other.  HELP, please!
    I have a Macbook pro.
When I tried to print, I was told to get new drivers from HP.  HP site says what I wrote above, that I need do nothing if printer worked with Snow Leapord.  Also read that a new HP Laserjet would need to be connected only via Airprint.  So, I have deleted the printer from the print queue, thinking that might help, but I can't find how to install it via Airprint??  After deleting the printer and having no luck with connecting wirelessly, I tried plugging in USB from printer to MacBook pro, too, thinking maybe that would help, but there is no recognition at all.
    What am I missing???
    Thanks!
    Ani

Airprint is for IOS devices and thus has no relevance to this issue.
Connect the printer to your Wireless Network and use Bonjour to detect nd connect it.
That's wrong. AirPrint is not just for iOS devices. Since HP doesn't provide drivers for this printer, they say to use AirPrint:

  • 2009 Macbook white slow to boot after upgrade from 10.5.8 (Leopard)to Mountain Lion   SSD

Ok, I have a 2009 Macbook White w/ 2Gz Core 2 Duo, 2Gb RAM, 120Gb HDD and NV9400M graphics.   Mountain Lion finally tempted me to do the upgrade and I wanted to take the opportunity to upgrade to SSD as well.    Here's what I did:
Originally my 120Gb was partitioned as 90Gb on 10.5.8 and 30Gb on Bootcamp for Window Vista.
I upgraded Macbook from Leopard to Mountain Lion while it's still fitted with the original HDD.   Gotta give credit to the lads at the Genius Bar who helped me with the clean install while keeping the Bootcamp partition intact!
I then took out the HDD, stick it into a USB3.0 HD enclosure, then put in my brand new SSD. (Plextor 128Gb SATA3).   I booted from the 10.8 recovery partition on my old HDD via USB, partitioned the SSD, then 'restored' the HDD's Mac OS X partition (now 10.8) onto my SSD.   Relatively painless process, and as a PC geek, I can't complain!  :-)
Here's the situation:    Now that I've gotten Mountain Lion to run on my 3yr old macbook white on my brand spanking new SSD, I was actually expecting really snappy performance but no.   I noticed now it takes much longer to boot:  I was so 'convinced' that the combination of SSD + Mountain Lion would give me such a significant boost that I couldn't care less to write down the previous boot time.     Right now it takes about 40-50 seconds for me to even see the 'apple' sign and another 15-20 secondds to get up & running.   That's without anything running in the background as it's still a clean install.
Read a few old posts it seems a common issue but given that I have a clean install, I wanted to make sure I haven't done anything wrong.
Last but not least, I also noticed while I booted from the 10.8 recovery partition from my old HDD, there's also an option of doing 'clean' reinstall of 10.8 on my SSD.    I tried that but it ended up being a HUGE wait.    The estimated time just kept growing and when it hits 6hrs, I cancelled it.   What does it do and is it normal to take such a long time to complete?   I rememeber the upgrade from Leopard to Mountain Lion took abt. 1.5yr...

    Actually just noticed something interesting:
If I press and hold down the option key when I switch on the macbook, I will get to the boot screen whereas I can choose between my main partition and the recovery 10.8 on my SSD.  Once I select the main partition, I'll be able to complete the booting, total time is abt. 30 seconds.
So my guess is that if I don't force the boot screen, then the computer is running some process in the background that WILL eventually boot from the main partition?
Is there any setup I can do/tweak to get the computer to boot straight from the main partition?

  • Does anyone have a listing of upgrades/updates needed to go from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion?

I have an older MacBook running 10.6.8 Update and would like to move to the newer OS X versions.  When I check updated software the search indicates I'm up to date.  How do I go from 10.6.8 to Mountain Lion?

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, click on More Info, and check the model identifier against the following, which are the earliest Macs of each type that can run Mountain Lion and newer:
    iMac7,1
    MacBook5,1
    MacBookPro3,1
    MacBookAir2,1
    Macmini3,1
    MacPro3,1
    Xserve3,1
If you choose to upgrade to Mountain Lion, click here; it isn't necessary to upgrade to Yosemite. Neither Yosemite nor Mountain Lion support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004.

  • Update was clean from Lion to Mountain Lion

    Update was clean from Lion to Mountain Lion;
I never had such a experience with a windows machine

Before purchasing the upgrade, be certain that your MacBook meets the minimum hardware requirements listed in Step 1 of the following page:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/
If you're not sure which model of MacBook you own, first use , About This Mac, More Info... Hardware Overview to determine the Model Identifier.
This Wikipedia MacBook entry will help you decode that Hardware Identifier into the terms Apple uses at the above Mountain Lion upgrade link, like 'Mid 2009' and so on.

Do I have to pay to get a copy of Mountain Lion? I know it's not that pricey but still when you pay such a price shouldn't it be included? Considering the fact that people who bought a computer a few months ago without Mountain Lion can download it for free, I think I should have the right to get a free copy too, no?

If you have a problem and need to reinstall, you don't have to pay.

I should just change the OS and leave all your apps and data alone.  That said, if any of your apps are old and use Rosetta (ppc apps), they won't run under Mountain Lion.
Make sure you take a good Time Machine or Clone backup before you convert.

I'm looking for a solution that doesn't involve reinstalling Mountain Lion if that is at all possible. It seems to me like it should, as that's not so much a solution as just starting over. If you need more from Console, just let me know. Also, I have tried all the threads that relate to restarting, rebooting, or reconfiguring Device Manager and none of them work; at the end I still get the message "No such file or directory."
    Thanks for the help!

Finally figured the problem out on my own. Thank you to the apple support community for all your help. Full story, I installed OSX Server and then changed the Service Data location to an external hard drive. After that the Profile Manager immediately stopped working. Several reinstallations later and still not working. The problem was not even a little related to /Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/usr/share/devicemgr/backend/wipeDB .sh, which is the answer everyone else on the internet was giving. The problem was that Profile Manager was no longer installed/installing for whatever reason. So, I went in and reinstalled just Profile Manager from the Server.app and now everything is working great. If things stop working I'll update this post. This is how:
To begin, delete /private/var/devicemgr. This file is created during the install and if it already exists, the install won't work.
Open terminal and copy sudo /Applications/Server.app/Contents/ServerRoot/System/Library/ServerSetup/CommonE xtras/80-devicemgrcommon.sh
That is all I had to do and Profile Manager works great for me now. Hope this helps someone.

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, I cannot restore emails with time machine. In Lion TM created a folder in Mail called recovered emails(or similar) No such folder is created since ML. I am able to see the email I want to restore, but it then disappears

I am inside Mail, waiting for the TM 'recovered mail' folder to appear - which it doen't.
I only looked in my home folder after trying several times from within my Main app.

  • When I installed Mountain Lion it asked the name of my computer. I was in such a hurry that I now have a typo. How can I go back and change the name of the computer?

How do I change the name of my computer?

One area that this appears is on Facebook where it lists the number of Recognized Devices. There are six devices which include iPad and iPhone. These items are grayed and you are unable to change. Also on my iphone it lists the computer name. This name is different from name of my computer. It's what I signed in as when I installed the Mountain Lion upgrade. I know I'm not doing a good job of explaining this. I have searched everywhere on my computer that I can think of and cannot locate where this is used. Any suggestions are appreciated.

  • What is good greeting card software for my mac mini with Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.1?  I want a wide range of existing templates such as Hallmark and Printshop offer, but can't find for this version OS X.

For my Mac mini with Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.1, what is a good greeting card software download with lots of templates and graphics?

    Hi simon2010,
as far as I can see, I have resolved it...
Just so I didn't write over my functioning disk in the Mac mini, I took it out and put a spare one in.  (Would have saved me going back to the Apple store to get it re-imaged if it did fail.)
I created a Mountain Lion installer on an 8GB USB stick, and first installed 10.8.4 (the latest at the current time) on my MacBook Pro... it worked fine, so I knew the installer stick had no problems at all (that's one thing to rule out of the list of potential causes).
With my spare hard disk in the Mac mini, I then went to try to install 10.8.4 on it, with my 16GB non-Apple RAM in it.  It failed as usual in the way I expressed originally.
I then just swapped my 16GB RAM for the original Apple 4GB RAM (2x2GB sticks) which I put back in the machine, and I tried re-installing.  No problem whatsoever - it installed perfectly.
It's the RAM!  Even though my RAM works perfectly once installed, the Apple OS installer refuses to proceed if Apple RAM is not in.  I put my 16GB RAM back in after installing the OS and all is fine.
I'm quite surprised Apple has done this.
Have you changed the RAM?  Let me know if it's the same problem or you have some differences.
I assume it will install fine if I put the orignal HD back in, again if I have the original Apple RAM in of course.
PS.  Also to note, the point where it failed in the installer with my 16GB RAM in, with the original Apple RAM in it took an incredibly long time towards the end of the bar moving across the screen; it says "5 minutes remaining" for at least 15, maybe 20 minutes, but gets past it eventually, then does a reboot to continue its install.

  • HT203421 Is there any way to reinstall apps such as iPhoto for a prior version of OSX such as Mountain Lion?

iPhoto seems to be corrupted so I'm trying to reinstall from Apps store but it only give me the option to download the version for Yosemite.  I need the version for Mountain Lion.  How can I get it?

I didn't want to risk deleting my current version without finding a clean copy to reinstall.  The only version available to me in the App store is 9.6.1 which is for Yosemite but I have Mountain Lion.  I found another post which explained how to repair a corrupted iPhoto Library and since I did that iPhoto is not crashing anymore (yet) so maybe I've fixed it.
