Mountain Lion 10.8.3: Dock shows 100%+ CPU in Activity Monitor

I upgraded my 'early 2008' MBP from 10.8.2 to 10.8.3 last week.  Memory use seems to have increased with no real change in application usage — .CPU utilization seems similar, too.  I have been watching Activity Monitor + vm_stat to see if I could identify any issues.  I just noticed that the Dock process shows 100% CPU utilization in the detail section — even though the Activity Monitor summary stats show plenty of idle CPU cycles available. Swap activity is minimal — this all makes me question the validity and/or accuracy of the detailed stats shown in Activity Monitor. Any input or comment from the community?
TIA...
P.S. Activity Monitor screen shots are below.  And no, I'm not running Parallels as per prior discussion https://discussions.apple.com/message/15596756#15596756 from 2011.

My $HOME/Library/Preferences folder contained only two com.apple.dock.* files:
com.apple.doc.plist w/current date timestamp
com.apple.doc.plist.KBPCAn with two-month old date timestamp
Detailed examination of the com.apple.doc.plist parameters seemed to be correct with nothing abnormal.
The killall Dock command suggested by Kappy seemed to address the 100%+ CPU at first, but then it returned.
Three consecutive full system shutdown/restart cycles seems to have eliminated Activity Monitor showing the Dock process running @ 100%+ CPU after 24+ hours of operation.  No changes were made to the content of com.apple.dock.plist.  My best guess at this point is that my system's Dock process may have had a memory leak-type issue that is neither traceable or reproduceable at this point.
The Activity Monitor issue variance (Dock process detail @ 100%+ CPU despite the summary record showing idle CPU cycles available) isn't explained.  It seems to me that the sum of the detailed Activity Monitor records should match the summary pie chart information presented.
Thanks to Kappy for the input and suggestion.  Further comment/discussion WRT the Activity Monitor issue is most welcome...

when i try to buy mountain lion it says app store error (100) try later what should i do

Try here first >  Mac App Store: "An unknown error occurred (100)" when purchasing
If that doesn't help, try the following:
    Disable anti virus software.
Turn off the Firewall in System Preferences > Security (or Security & Privacy) > Firewall
If that doesn't help, open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.appstore/Cache.db
    Click Go
Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
    Now here:
    ~/Library/Preferences
    Click Go
Move these files from the Preferences folder to the Trash.
    com.apple.appstore.plist
    com.apple.storeagent.pllist
    Now here:
    ~/Library/Cookies
    Click Go
Move the com.apple.appstore.plist file from the Cookies folder to the Trash.
Empty the Trash, try the App Store.

  • Mountain Lion 10.8.2 not showing big folders from External HDD, please help ?

    Hello guys,
The problem appeared after I did a clean install of Mountain Lion 10.8.2. The OS works nicely except it does not show my big Movie (around 200 GB) folder from my External HDD. This Movie folder is not related to any Apple software such as iTunes etc.. What's funny is that my LG TV shows the folder, and I can access it to open any movie. But when I mount the HDD to my MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion now, all folders are shown except this one. The HDD is NTFS and had no problems with Snow Leopard (my previous OS).
I tried defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE and I see hidden folders in External HDD, but the Movie folder is still not shown.
Is this issue related to the size of this folder ? any help & ideas are greatly appreciated, thanks!

    Hi all,
I see its been 2 months since the last post. Did someone find the solution? I have the same problem with 10.8.2 update. Macbook pro mid 2010 with Crucial 256 m4 ssd (latest firmware 010G). Since yesterday my mac refuses to start.
    What I did so far:
    1. Impossible to start os x 10.8.2, stuck at spinning circle below the apple logo at startup. Disk check ok, permissions ok. Startup in "safe mode" stucks on spinning  wheel as well.
    2. Impossible to format the drive for a new clean install. What I find strange is that I cannot format the ssd with any utility. So far I tried with windows, linux and with disk utility on os x. I put the ssd in a usb casing and I am able to read it as an external drive, can copy some smaller files from it but cannot change anything on it (no permissions).
    3. Did a clean install on original hd of my mac. Data transfer (1 user)  from time machine or the ssd goes through 85-95% then stops. And now impossible to format the original drive with the 10.8.2 installed to downgrade to 10.7.
    4. Pram reset
Does anyone have any idea what to do now?
    Thanks!

  • Purchased Mountain Lion, but it is stuck on download with no activity for about half an hour.  What next?

Purchased Mountain Lion via App store but it appears to be stuck in download with no activity for over half an hour and no error messages. The download bar shows the download at about 1/20th for about half an hour as well.  I had what appeared to be disk corruption.  I used OS CD to repair - indicated successful. When I rebooted again the system showed the spinning icon again.  I read that I should not install Mountain Lion if my disk still has errors.  I'm not sure what my next steps should be?

Sign out of the Mac App Store.
    Sign back in.
    Restart the Download.
Sounds like you repaired whatever disk issues there was, you should be fine. Its now a matter of obtaining the install.
    Others reported that it looked like it wasnt downloading here;

  • Satellite C670D-10W - Task manager shows 100% CPU usage

My brand new laptop with factory installed windows 7 and all programs by Toshiba nothing addded shows 100% processor usage in task Manager and works pretty slow. The sum of 80 odd processes shown in task manager never reaches more than 30-50 % but bottom line is always 100%.
Tried process hacker 2, shows same processes as task manager.
    What can be the problem?

If you check this forum you will see that you can find many threads with the same or similar content. Many people have noticed the same after notebook purchase, especially phenomena that notebook is pretty slow. Just without panic. What you must do is to optimize preinstalled operating system.
    What can be the problem?
Brand new notebook is preinstalled with original Toshiba recovery image. This recovery image contains operating system, all necessary drivers, different Toshiba specific tools and utilities and some additional software like preinstalled McAffe or Norton antivir.
Many of these tools, utilities and additional software will start with operating system and run in the background. To be honest some of them can be deactivated, some of them can be also removed from the system. By default Windows update is set to automatic so when you go online all available windows updates will be installed automatically in the background and this will happen without your knowledge. This updates installation will make your HDD pretty busy and notebook operations will be slowed down.
I recommend you to change this option and set it to Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install.....
I hope you understand what I want to say and if you have more questions you are welcome.

  • Need Help! CPU shows 100% constantly in performance monitor

We have a new Dell t620 server running server 2012 std. running AD DS, dhcp, dns and the performance monitor shows constant 100% CPU load, while the processes in task manager can show very little CPU useage. By the way this is a Intel Xeon E5-2620 6 core
CPU, with 32GB ram which shows normally using only about 2GB ram at the same time. If I do a shutdown and restart I am getting the same 100% CPU load.
Does anyone know what might be causing this behavior?
We have other identical servers which show usually zero to low CPU load, performing the same functions.
Is this a known problem with server 2012 std.?

This server is now in service on a network. So I cannot shut it down during business day.
What is really strange is when I open task manager it shows almost all the CPU useage in APPS, which consist of task manager and resource monitor, with task manager sometimes even going to 100% CPU useage.
While memory, harddisk and ethernet are showing like low useage.
Do you all think it could be memory or a bad CPU? This is a 1 week old Dell server.
Does anyone know if there is a good memory checker that can be run from windows while server is in service?
    Thank you for your assistance.

  • New 2.8 8 core MP/Leopard not showing 8 cores in activity monitor?

So, I pick up a new 8 core 2.8 today, drive the hour home, wipe the drive and put a fresh retail copy of leopard on it, then I decide to open up Activity Monitor and "view" all 8 of my cores as the dock icon.
Instead I get 1 icon, and in activity monitor I only 1 black box.
On my Macbook, and iMacs I show 2 icons for processors in the dock.
On my 1st gen Mac Pro I show 4 processors in the dock.
and I am not talking about the floating icon that sits in the corner on the desktop, I am talking about the pretty blue cpu usage icon that you can use in the dock.
Why is my Pro only showing one, but About this mac shows 8?.

I also have this problem with my 8-core, 2.8Ghz Mac Pro and activity monitor. I would always put the Activity monitor in my User/Login Items to start up with Tiger & Leopard, and saw 2 meter bars with my dual-core iMac, and now only see 1 with my 8-core MacPro.
If you use the floating window, it will show you 8.
My way around this is to use "Menu Meters" (the latest for Leopard), and I have Menu Meters display all 8-core bars in my Menu bar. Works great - but it's not as pretty as the floating window or dock icon bars from Activity Monitor.
(Also with Menu Meters I have the "show disk activity", "Show download/upload speed" and "Free memory"...it all works great)
So... I'll cast my vote for Apple or a 3rd party company to fix the Dock/Activity Monitor to show all 8-cores in my MacPro!

there is panel in the upper right corner of my screen that says 'copy' preparing to duplicate to "desktop". I clicked stop three days ago and it is still trying to stop. Tried to 'force quit' does not show up in finder, looked in activity monitor but i am not sure how it is listed. I am new to the mac world.

    Force quit/Restart the Finder.
    Then for safety...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

  • MacBook Pro 13 2010 running Mountain Lion: will not boot and shows a folder with a flashing question mark. Will not start in 'safe mode' i.e holding shift on start up - nor can I call up any utilities with the OSX shortcuts. Any thoughts?

Following an automatic update, the machine wouldn't boot. Screen came on (shows white) - then either showed a 'No-Entry' Sign and a spinning cog, or a folder with a qusetion mark. I  tried to start the machine in different modes ( eg. holding shift after the tone ) but nothing worked. after leaving the machine alone for 1 hour. It worked perfectly again. I did a 'verify disk' check which found no problems. 2 hours later it then froze ( In - Photoshop). Could not force quit, so shut down, and have not been able to boot again since (white lit screen - flashing folder with question mark) . I have also taken the hard drive out and checked the connections which seem fine. Any suggestions? - Is the Hard Drive dead. : other info : It was also running parallels 8, with Windows 7. at the time of the update....

  • Dock uses 100% CPU

My Dock process, after a while, begins using 100% of a CPU core. I can kill the Dock process and everything goes back to normal once the Dock restarts. I have no idea what is triggering the Dock to start consuming CPU. Has anyone else seen this, or have any ideas on how to investigate?
    Seen on 10.7.0-10.7.2.

I have gfxCardStatus running. I've now switched that off to see if that helps. I typically awaken my Mac by opening the lid, then connecting an external display, then closing the lid again. Dock often goes to 100% at that time. (I will have to test further to see at which step).
I noticed my system.log is full of this, at the time I awoke the Mac and the Dock went to 100%:

  • [GeForce 6] mpg shows 100% CPU Usage

Ever since I installed my new MSI NX6200 Graphic card, I havent been able to watch any of my mpg, mpeg, etc. files. I check the Task Manager, and it shows the player (let it be, Windows Media Player, RealOne, WinAmp, any1!) is using 100% of the CPU. What gives?
    MSI NX6200 TD128
    P4 1.8
60 GB Maxtor as System Drive
    200 GB Seagate Drive
    Creative Audigy Sound Card
Samsung SyncMaster 172x running on DVi
    Windows 2000 SP4
    512 RAM
    (anything else needed?)
    Everything is absolutely updated.
Games run fine, DVDs run fine, mp3s, name it, no problems whatsoever.
    So really, what gives?
    misterno

    You're telling me!
I checked the Hardware Acceleration. Fine.
So... How could my video processor be faulty? I mean, can a faulty video processor really pick his "enemies"? Why only mpeg and mpg, and not anything else?
    Forceware: 77.72
    Video BIOS: 5.43.02.57.29
And er... Nvidia DVD Decoder? Should I install this? I don't know what that is, sorry... I don't see how a DVD decoder can change the way mpg files are perceived...
HEEEELP. Some1's gotta know! It's driving me nuts!!! (Maybe it has nothing to do with my new video card. Maybe it's something else???)

  • RT Sys Manager shows 100% CPU always

When using the RT System Manager, I have found that the CPU usage is always 100% - even when all loaded VIs are idle. The chart is segmented with yellow (normal priority) tasks and white (low priority tasks) - yellow on top.

    Tommy,
What sort of target are you using?
If it is a FieldPoint or Compact FieldPoint RT Controller, this is the normal operation of the module. With FieldPoint RT controllers, there are two programs running simultaneously; the LabVIEW Run-Time Engine and the IA Control Environment. The LabVIEW Run-Time engine is the portion that runs any LabVIEW code that you develop and download. The IA Control Environment is the program that reads/writes to the IO and publishes the data over ethernet (providing all NI Logos protocol based communication). The IA Control Environment is set to run at normal or low priority so that it shares time with your application (running in the LabVIEW Run-Time Engine).
You can reduce the time being used by the IA Control Environment by setting the Pause parameter to a value other than 0 ms (valid values are 0 - 1000 ms). By setting the Pause parameter to a non-zero value, you place the control environment to sleep. This will slow down the rate at which new values are published and updates are applied. For example, setting the Pause parameter to 1000 ms means that the channels will be read and published over the network at 1000 ms intervals, potentially causing a delay in the notification of value changes, or the application of new values from write commands that were sent to the module. Note that FieldPoint Reads/Writes performed using the FieldPoint VIs running on code that was downloaded into the module is not effected by the Pause parameter. Alternatively, you can increase the thread priority of your downloaded VIs if you need the processor to spend more time on the LabVIEW code and less on the IA Control Environment.

    Aaron

  • When I set up Contacts on iCloud, Contacts on my Mac consumes about 100% of a CPU, per Activity Monitor. Does that make sense?

I don't think this should be happening, but I haven't been able to find any reference to such a situation in Apple Support or on Forums.

I'm trying to do this. I unchecked Contacts, restarted my Mac and lo and behold, Contacts was rechecked! I unchecked it and checked Activity Monitor. By the time I returned to System Preferences, Contacts was rechecked. This happened 3 times. Now it has remained rechecked, AddressBookSourceSync is consuming over 90% of a CPU (mostly over 95%). I'm letting it go for about half an hour. I'm debating whether to let it go and see if it settles down (no evidence that it will). CPU time is over 30 minutes now. I think I'm going to quit (or Force Quit) AddressBookSourceSync, follow the suggested steps and see what happens.
