Mountain Lion Change dock to Dark?

I've been searching for this since 10.8 was released and yet to find any way to customize the dock background color.
I've always used a almost black dock BG in 10.6 and 10.7 and can't stand the light grey one in 10.8.
There must be "some" way to tweak these things?
It should be a few options in the system preference, either choose a light mid or dark bg, or even choose your own color.
OS X is a working environment which i use 8-14 hour/day and it's important to be able to adjust these things so you feel comfortable in your working space.
Please does anyone know how to tweak the Dock bg color?
Apple are you listening? give us some control over our own desktop.
Looking at Linux and Windows you can tweak anything to anything.
Also it would be nice to be able to turn off some of the social media integration.
I use Facebook and Twitter less and less and would appreciate those options to share everything turned off.
It's all about making my working space as clutterfree and pleasant.
Thanks

There is no official way to do this. It's not as easy as replacing image files like it was pre-Mountain Lion. The dock is rendered using code, specifically the CoreGraphics API in the Dock.app binary. I wanted a black dock, and so I disassembled the binary and patched it to render the way that I liked. This would be the only way to change it.

  • Mountain Lion changes my google chat icon / avatar

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion 10.8.2, and regularly, after a few days of use, I notice that my Google chat icon / image / avatar is being changed to an image that I have on my local machine, that I once had as my login avatar, but have not used now for over 8 years!
It seems that Mountain Lion is telling Google's chat (but not Google+, or facebook) to use this image as my avatar for google chat, even though I am not explicitly telling it to, AND both my contacts and login profile images (System Preferences -> Users & Groups)  on my mac are set to the correct image I want.
Originially, my avatar was an animated gif, but I'm trying to replace that everywhere with a standard gif just in case that's the problem, but it doesn't seem to be helping!
Does anyone know where else I may be having this phantom image of me, from 8 years ago show up??  The picture is not my current login or contacts pictures...
I did look at this discussion:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/19272677#19272677 but changing my contacts image, even to a standard jpg/gif, did not help.
Does anyone know where else I may be having this phantom image of me, from 8 years ago show up??

Ok... I figured it out on my own...
Messages will regularly (~1 hour I think) change all the avatar/profile images it can for all the various jabber, AIM, etc (including gchat, since it's jabber protocol).  I thought it was changing it to my Address book or "contacts" profile, or my login images, but these are independent of the one Messages was using (atleast for me). Here's how I fixed this for me:
Go to Mac OS Menu Bar (when focussed in Messages):
    Messages -> Change My Picture...
Then drag an image you want to use into one of the "recents" tab, use the "other" tab, or take a picture of yourself using the web cam.  Once you've selected a photo, you can crop it within the image window, or leave it alone.  When you're ready, just click "done" button.
That's seeming to fix this PITA for me... why Apple decided my Mac's account image, Contacts profile, and Messages avatar image should all be different... beats me.

  • Mountain Lion change color profile when use discrete video card

MacBookPro mid 2010. Update Samsung SSD 830.
Mountain Lion 10.8.2 just installed (new installation).
Reset PRAM and SMC. Done. No result.
    Try with GfxCardStatus. No result.
When the system uses the discrete video card changes the color profile.
I'm not the only one with this problem.
Someone managed to solve the problem (really)?
I DO NOT ACCEPT COMMENTS OR ANSWERS USELESS.
Sorry, but slightly altering after losing three hours in forums where no one ever answered ...
    Thanks.
    Stefano.

    Let's see...
Sounds like you're running into an expected issue if you make an alias to removeable media.  The same thing would happen if you made the alias to a folder on a DVD-R disc or CD-R.  If you eject the original, you disable the alias.
If you copy the entire SD card volume to your drive, the PRIVATE package should copy across.  Then, as a folder on your hard drive rather than a volume on removeable media, you could make an alias to the STREAM package for quicker access later.
I'm pretty sure that Handbrake, like Prmeiere Pro, can see the MTS files directly.  That is, it's not dependant on the other folders in the PRIVATE directory sturcture.  As such, you could copy the contents of the STREAM package to another folder on your drive.  Just be mindful of the default MTS file names if you're using more than one SD card (you don't want to accidentally copy 00001.MTS from one card over 00001.MTS from another card).
As long as Handbrake sees MTS directly, you could even rename the MTS files after you've copied them.
On a side note, I almost always archive my SD cards with the data structure intact.  More often than not, that file structure is important to corretly access the video stored within that structure.  If something unexpected happens while working with the MTS files, it is good to have the original file structure to go back to.  Although, SD cards are getting to be so low cost that sometimes I just label the SD card and store it for archiving.

  • OSX Mountain Lion change keyboard language after reboot

My native language is Portuguese, and since the 10.8.1 update, every time I reboot my computer, the keyboard language goes from Portuguese to English.
I set it again to Portuguese and after a reboot or if I shutdown the computer and start again, its english again.
This bug is very annoying, because all the layout changes. Does anyone have this problem or know how to fix it?

I'm also have the same issue. I use the Spanish ISO keyboard settings. Every time I reboot or logout the USA keyboard appears again.
As rmz83 I only have check the Spanish ISO in system preferences/language & text/input sources on OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2.
Anyone knows how to solve this problem??

  • Upgrading to Mountain Lion changes iTunes from 10.7 to 11?

This may be a silly question, but I am interested in upgrading to Mountain Lion, but was curious if 1). With the upgrade to Mountain Lion there is an automatic change to iTunes 11 or 2.) do I have the option to keep iTunes 10.7 if I upgrade to Mountain Lion.
If with the upgrade to Mountain Lion, there is an automatic change to iTunes 11 or if there is a rather technical detailed route to avoid changing to iTunes 11, then Ill pass on the upgrade for now, but if I have the option to keep 10.7 or there is a way to keep 10.7 I sure would like to know!
    Thanks!

The latest version in the App Store is 10.8.5 - do you know if it has iTunes 11? I can't find anything that says yes or no for which version of iTunes is in 10.8.5
I'm in the same boat as Eureka0000 -- I want to upgrade to Mountain Lion, but not if it means having to use iTunes 11.
    Thanks.

  • Mountain Lion and Docking on a MBP

At home I have a multiple USB port adaptor throught which I connnect mutiple peripherals to my MBP. In partilcular this is used to connect boththe hard drive I use for Time Machine and my HP pronter scanner. Since upgrading to Mountain Lion I find that when bringing the MBP home from work, plugin in the USB adaptor and opening up the lid the system wakes up form sleep mde fine but does not see the peripherlas connected through the USB adaptor. Unplugging it and plugging it back in has no effect. If I press restart, however, everything is recognised and works fine after the re-boot. I have been used to pressing the soft eject button on the time machine capsule in Finder and then closing the lid to put the MBP into sleep mode before taking it to work and then reversing the process in the evening. Indeed, on OS X Lion I have often run the machine for months without rebooting. A major time savong benefit by comparison with a windows machine! Is there any way to force Mountain Lion to "see" the peripherals just plugged in without re-bootong the system?

    I installed 10.8.1 three times.
I completly erased my SSD twice.
I repaired it with Disk Utlity, repaired permissions, repaired it with Disk Warrior, Reset the P-Ram, etc...
A lot of people (at least in Italy) are having similar issues.
It is the very first time that a new OS disappoints me that much.
    Thanks

  • Did OSX Mountain Lion change cursor behavior in mail?

Just upgraded to OSX Lion (working like a charm) and I just noticed that the cursor showing "current message" in mail seems to be behaving differently.  I have my mail sorted with the most recent at the top and as I move down, they become older.  Before, when I deleted a mail the cursor showed the next most recent mail as current (it moved up) - which I really didn't like since I had to move the cursor down to see the next oldest.  Today with the upgrade the cursor stays put and the next oldest mail is moving up to become the current mail.  I really do like this and wanted to check if I am imagining things.  Thanks.

Make sure your Mac qualifies to run Mountain Lion >  Apple - Upgrade your Mac to OS X Mountain Lion.
Disable anti virus software and turn off the Firewall in System Preferences > Security & Privacy.
Then try here >  Mac App Store: How to resume interrupted downloads
If that doesn't help, click Store from the App Store menu bar top of your screen. From the drop down menu click Check for Unfinished Downloads.
Keep in mind, for downloading Mountain Lion from the App Store, a high speed (broadband) internet connection is strongly recommended by Apple as noted here > iTUNES STORE - MAC APP STORE - TERMS AND CONDITIONS
If you need to reinstall OS X or repair the the startup disk using Mountain Lion Recovery, that requires broadband access to the internet via Wi-Fi or an Ethernet connection. OS X is downloaded over the internet form Apple when OS X Recovery is used for reinstallation.

  • Updating to Mountain Lion changed the default system font

I finally got around to updating my system to 10.8.3 last night. As soon as the installation was complete, I noticed the system default font seems to have changed. I've attached an screencap to show exactly what I mean, I know it's not specific to my current browser because this is shown across Firefox, Safari, Chrome, etc. Any ideas how to remedy?

Found this in the suggested posts- https://discussions.apple.com/message/21450701#21450701
Solution: check for duplicate fonts in FontBook, resolve all.

  • Any way to theme the dock in Mountain Lion

I've been using Dock Library for the past few versions of osx to theme my dock with a dark glass background, I find it much easier to see the icons with my choice of wallpapers if there is a dark contrast behind the icons.
Is there any way to do this in mountain lion? Dock Library seems to no longer work and for such a basic usability issue it seems mad that I can just pick even from between a dark/light style for the dock.
    Kind regards
    Dave.

Coming from linux I find this level of non-customisability quite irritating, especially when it's a basic function of the os.

  • Using Mountain Lion and getting "Error 102 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED)" from some domain names that work on other computers on my network.

I can not load some websites/domain names through Firefox,Chrome & Safari. It seems like a DNS caching issue to me. I have tried flusing DNS cache and changing to to public nameservers with varying success. The domains will load on other versions of OSX on my network, so Iappears to be an OS version issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Three finger gestures not working on Mountain Lion

Since upgrade to Mountain Lion, gestures have become unreliable. Gestures for Mission Control, switching between full screen app, etc. (which are set with three fingre swipes) work sometimes but won't work most of the time. Anyone else facing the same problem?

I had this problem but I found it was the settings that changed when mountain lion was installed.
Mountain lion changed my three finger gestures to four finger gestures when swiping between full screen apps.
I found there were extra settings. Apparently when installing mountain lion my three finger gestures were changed to four finger gestures.

  • Do I need to update Bootcamp 3.3 after upgrading from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion?

Do I need to update Bootcamp 3.3 after upgrading directly from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion? If so, what is the recommended version for my machine?
Other pros and cons we should consider? Not sure what is considered best practice.
We have a mid-2011 iMac (12,1) running Win7 64bit. Concerned about firmware updates not being compatible with Bootcamp 3.3. Firmware updates forThunderbolt port were part of post-Mountain Lion updater install. Not sure what other firmware/boot changes might have been applied to support the new recovery partition, for example. Will the 3.3 windows control panel still work safely?
Win7 still boots OK, at least for now. Backup is current.
I'd like to get the entire machine current again. Bootcamp 5.0 didn't want to download (appeared to hang writing to my external drive, which is otherwise fine). Bootcamp 4.1 refused to install on Win7 (claimed it wasn't for my machine, so I aborted. Downloaded from apple support page directly).
I've searched the forums for this specific question - I see plenty of info for upgrading Bootcamp 4 to 5, but nothing for 3 to 5.
    Thanks much in advance,
    -b

    Appreciate the quick response.
There are basically 2 schools of thought here:
    - If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
    - Don't fall off the upgrade cycle (apply patches whether you have an issue or not in order to ward off trouble before it happens).
I don't have a specific issue that I'm chasing on the Win7 side right now. I'm attempting to address having fallen off the upgrade cycle by staying on Snow Leopard too long.
I appreciate that the Win7 side under bootcamp is its own thing (upgrades to Mac OS don't cross over or effect the bootcamp partition) - except where firmware upgrades coming out of Mountain Lion change the hardware interface to Win7. Hence my questions.
