Mountain Lion damaged my hard disk

I tried installing ML in my iMac running Snow Leopard, and I also got the hard disk damage problem.
It seems some people that were running Lion have been able to run de Disk Utility booting from the Recover Partition, which is not featured in Snow Leopard.
I also saw people suggesting to use Disk Warrior or Tech Tool Pro to recover the disk, but haven't heard of any positive feedback and I am not paying to solve a problem I did not create.
This seems like a major bug in Mountain Lion so far being ignored by Apple. I have heard of people taking their computers to technical support and the people at Apple suggesting to replace the hard disk, which is a pretty convenient solution, since they are not the ones losing their files.
If the installation of ML not even started, how come I cannot switch back to my status quo and boot normally in my Snow Leopard? I am really disappointed about this situation and I would like to hear from people who were able to recover their computers from Snow Leopard, especially people at Apple that seem to be silent about this problem so far.

hpr3, I understand your point that maybe my disk might already have a prior issue, but it doesn't seem a coincidence to me that many others have had the same problem upgrading to ML and suddently had their disks crashed.
It's not a coincidence, but neither is it the fault of ML.  A drive that is slightly corrupt can, when a major system upgrade writes tens of thousands of files, become very badly damaged, corrupting the system and potentially user data.  It happens to some people with every system upgrade and update.
I did not run the disk utility before the upgrade. I would expect the ML installation to do it before permanently compromising my disk.
That's the way it's supposed to work.  Many people with problems end up being told that they can't install because the disk can't be repaired.  However, some problems manage to persist.  No disk repair tool is perfect.
Utlimately, although you say you're not paying to fix a problem you didn't create, you did create the problem by not having backups.  Backups are a responsibility every computer user has, regardless of OS.  If you had backups, the fix would be simple and cheap....  erase the hard drive and restore from backup.  Since you don't, you will end up spending some time and possibly money resolving the problems, and you may not see some of your data again.  If the problem is fixable, DiskWarrior can likely fix it.  (It doesn't try to repair the directory structures, it simply rebuilds them from scratch.)
It would be wise to try to back up what you can before doing that, but that will be tricky with a damaged drive.  You could try connecting to another Mac using Firewire target mode, and copy what you can that way...  but you're likely to have some errors interrupt the process.  You could also try using Disk Utility's Restore pane to copy the disk to another hard drive, but again, the errors are likely to complicate things.  You could also try copying vital files with the Terminal while in recovery mode, if you know how to use Unix commands.

Software upgrades do not generally damage hardware; your drive's failure must be co-incidental. On most MBP's, a hard drive is very easily replaced by a user. You might want to check out this site for both hard drives as well as install videos (check which model you have so you can check the correct video):
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/
    hard drives:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/internal_storage/hard_drives_and_SSD
I just recently upgraded my MBP with an SSD; I purchased an kit with an external enclosure from OWC and cloned the current drive to the new one, installed the new drive and was done in no time.

  • Installing Mountain Lion on BLANK hard disk that says I need more space

I'm trying to reinstall Mountain Lion to a blank hard disk. It stops during install and says I need 4.2G more space and suggests I free some up. It's a blank hard disk, all I have access to is Disk Utility. How do I free up space?

Did you format the blank disk and add a partition?
Can you provide a screen shot of Disk Utility?

  • Mountain lion ejects external hard disks

After upgrading to Mountainlion (March 5, 2013), my LaCie external hard disk (500 GB, used for TimeMachine) was spontaneously and improperly ejected, presumably by the OS.
    (1) The disk had worked without problems under OS 10.7.
    (2) The disk mounts properly on an older Mac (OS 10.3.2).
    (3) The disk would not mount on a newer Mac also running OS 10.8.2.
I am currently reparing the disk using Disk Utility on the old Mac, but I hesitate to attempt mounting it again on my iMac (June 2008) running OS 10.8.3.  Can anyone shed light on this problem? I know I am not the only one with this difficulty, so is Apple doing something about it?

It is very probably dying (I just had to replace a Lacie disk 250GB form 2008).
This disk has originally been formatted on the 10.3 and then never again?
You can format it again on 10.8, but you will loose the TM backup, so if you do that you have to make a new TM on another disk.
I would no longer trust this disk, and buy another (5 years is not bad at all). Take all you want to preserve off the Lacie on the old machine and copy it to the ML machine.

  • How much space is occupied by OSX Mountain Lion on the hard disk

    Hi guys,
can someone tell me please how much space is occupied by Mountain Lion on hd? I whould like to buy a new Hybrid hd but it has only 8 Gb of nand flah memory.
I fear that operating system will be divided on both hd partitions (ssd and serial ata 5400 rpm.)... Someone have some experience with hybrid storage?
    Thanks a lot

Then you don't want that model. You want the Momentus XT500 which is a 7200 RPM drive. For example, Seagate Momentus XT 500 GB 2.5 Inch Solid State Hybrid Drive ...

Check to see if you have a folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the root level of your hard disk. That can cause this error message.

  • I'm not crying. Is there a way to install Mountain Lion on a bootable disk on latest iMac cuz mine shipped without an OS?

I could cry right now. After decades of being an Apple fan, something is happening for the worse and issues with every Apple product I own 2 iphones, 2 iMacs, 15" Macbook Pro, and iPad Mini (no issues here, just slow connecting to App Store and can never seem to download updates)  has left me disenchanted. I do have a question about Mountain Lion but just airing out grievances.
Ok, to the point. I have the new 27" iMac that was just released. Was delivered and opened the box, turned it on, and there was a flashing folder icon. No OS, wonderful. I live in Brooklyn and not trying to lug a 27" computer onto the train nor should I have to pay for a cab to resolve this. Anyway, I tried to go into Recovery but it started doing an Internet Recovery with a download time of 9 hours. Um, no thanks. So I downloaded the latest version of Mountain Lion from the App store on my old iMac and made a boot disk onto an external via Apples instructions. Plugged it into new iMac lemon, go into recovery mode, see the bootable drive, click on it to reinstall and it gives me a crossed out circle icon and shuts down.
What am I doing wrong? I have pretty decent broadband and did start the internet recovery process now until I find a better solution online. After 5 hours, Internet recovery finished and clicked on Reinstall Mountain Lion to which it's asking me to download the OS again and with a 13 hour download time!!!! What's going on here? What was the purpose of internet recovery taking 5 hours only to download it again at another 13 hours???
Question is, is there something I should be doing differently? Is there a way to install Mountain Lion from a bootable disk? This is mind blowingly the dumbest thing I've encountered with Apple. Got a problem with your OS? No problem, just download a 4.4GB file every incident.
    Thank you.

You can't grab a installer from another Mac and expect it to run. The newer Macs have newer hardware which requires special drivers. If the version that boots the iMac is a special build, it won't work any other way than Internet Recovery.
If it was me, I'd take it right back. You have no idea if the OS is just corrupted, the hard drive is dead, or what. I wouldn't take my chances with it.

  • Mountain Lion improperly ejects external disks

Has anybody else had this problem? Ever since I updated to Mountain Lion, my external hard drives are periodically and seemingly randomly ejected, giving me an error message about improperly ejected disks. I have two drives, daisy-chained in firewire on a 2012 iMac.
Any help would be welcome. Thank you in advance for your help.

Thanks for the help so far. To answer some questions,
    1. I have two G-Drive Q hard drives, both fairly recent, MacOS Extended formatting.
    2. Both show up in disk utility, when they show up on the desktop.
    3. They are both powered with their own power cords.
    4. I have run Disk Utility on both, but just recently and don't yet know if that was a solution. The one that I use for Time Machine couldn't repair permissions, due to that command being grayed out. Not sure why?
    5. the problem onlly started when I switched to Mountain Lion, therefore I suspect OS problems.
I will try switching the order of the daisy-chain, and see if that has any effect.

  • Unable to install Mountain Lion on my hard drive

I'm trying to upgrade my early 2008 mac pro from Leopard to Mountain Lion using a bootable usb drive but I'm having trouble doing so.  When I try installing mountain lion to my hard drive (Mac Drive 1) - The hard drive is greyed out and says 'you can't upgrade this version of OS X'.  Yet it looks like I can install mountain lion onto my second hard drive (Mac Drive 2) for some odd reason.
Here's the details for my mac drive 1 which I'm having trouble with (I noticed the volume format is greyed out on disk utility as well).....
And here's the mac drive 2 info which I don't want to install mountain lion onto but looks like I can....
Any help would be much appreciated!  Thanks a lot.

I can't answer the bad hard drive question without some guessing. Not that smart.
Do you have a bootable copy of the Mountain Lion installer?
If not download the following. The site says it will work with 10.6:
    http://blog.gete.net/lion-diskmaker-us/
That program will allow you to make a bootable DVD or USB with Mountain Lion on it.
You can boot off of it, erase the disk, and then install Mountain Lion.
I think you should be able to reinstall from carbon copy cloner, but I haven't used that program.  During the setup it will ask you if you want to import files, but I don't know if it can read carbon copy cloner. I know it can read a Time Machine backup.
A clean install is generally better anyway.
If you get Mountain Lion installed, not everything works like it did in 10.5/10.6. For an example, scrolling is reversed, but you can change it back to the way it is in 10.5/10.6 in System Preferences. After spending some time in System Preferences, my computer acts pretty much the way it always did.

Looking to move data from OSX 9 to Mountain Lion using external hard drive?

Thanks.  I'd like to get rid of this OSX 9 after retrieving a few files.  If I wanted to erase it's hard drive before I do so, would powering off then on again and immediately start tapping the F10 button do the trick as it does with a PC?

  • I have a 2nd gen Mac book air with Lion. The hard disk has filled up even though i keep my data , music etc on hard drive . I used disk inspector to find where problem was and it is 20GB in the hidden files under the user directory can i resolve this ?

I have a 2nd Gen MAc book Air with Lion .  The 60GB hard disc has quickly filled up despite me keeping most of my data on a portable hard drive .  I used disk inspector to locate the problem but found that it was was in 20 GB of hidden files in my user directory .  Is this correct and is there anything i can do about it ? Using disk inspector you can not see individual hudden diretories or files. I did unhide them but there is a mass of diretories etc and so no way i could see if this is one or multiple files using the space. Library System and  Applications are at 4 3 and 3 GB respectvely.  The data I actually keep on there is 9GB    Thanks for any help

I think the problem is Quick Time Player. I am using OS 10.6.8 by the way.
    I tried it out again.
I had about 26 GB of space before I played an .avi video.
After the movie started to play (it was slow to load), I got a warning message that my startup disk was full. I opened Disk Utility and it told me I had no space left (about 20 MB or something like that was left).
I watched to the end of the movie.
    Then I quit Quicktime Player.
And I shut down the computer.
I turned on the computer and checked Disk Utility. I have about 26 GB of space.
I think for some reason Quicktime Player uses up a lot of the disk space when it runs movies that are problematic. This movie I was watching did not open with vlc.
I normally use vlc to watch movies.
Probably it doesn't use up this much space when the movie is OK.
I think there's a problem with this particular movie. It is about 50 MB so it's not that big a file. I watch .smi subtitles with it. The Quicktime Player automatically loads the subtitle file in this case because the subtitle file has the same name as the movie file.
I watched about 10 movie files from the same series that I downloaded together and did not have any problem watching them. I watched them on vlc. But this latest movie had problems I think (as I repeat). It did not load on vlc even though I waited for a minute, and normally movies load instantly on vlc.
So I think that movie file caused problems. It made QT player use up a lot of hard disk space.
I had better avoid watching that movie in the future. I don't want it to wreck my hard drive.
So to sum up, everything is back to normal. I have the hard disk space that I should have. However, I am scared of damaging my hard drive due to shonky movie files that eat up all the space when they are played using QT player, and so I will not watch those files in the future, as I do not know why the files do that.

  • Mountain Lion download corrupts hard drive!!

I am trying to re-download Mountain Lion to create a boot jump drive so I can reinstall Mountain Lion clean.  After download I can not open "mount" the installEDS.dmg file.  Error pops up stating invalid checksums and I can not complete the process of creating the boot jump drive.  I check Disk Utility/Verify Disk and see these results: Disk Utility/Verify Disk reports, Incorrect block count for file installEDS.dmg, Volume Bitmap needs minor repair, The volume is now corrupt and needs repair.
So.. I restart the computer through recovery hard drive option so that I can repair the disk.  I am able to successfully repair the disk. The computer is still working.
I repeat the Mountain Lion down load process, attempt to create the boot jump drive and again.... installEDS.dmg will not mount, invalid checksums.  I check Disk Utility/Verify Disk.   The volume is now corrupt and needs repair.  I repeated this 4 times (I have a slow connection DSL 6mb).  Same results! I repeated once on a different day (App Store server problems maybe?).  Same results!
The reason I want to do a clean install of Mountain Lion is because I have constant kernel panics.  Kernel panics are (4 to 5) in an hour. When this happens I attempt to restart the computer.  After second computer restart (kernel panic upon first restart attempt), the computer will last a day without a kernel panic!  I have attempted to address the kernel panics, (removing 3rd party programs, latest updates, etc.) I can not pin down the problem. I have experienced kernel panics after sleep, kernel panics when shutting down or restart, kernel panics after turning off blue tooth, basically kernel panics under every application so far.  I have ran the hardware test, (from snow leopard CD), no hardware errors.  Ran memtest from single user mode, no memory errors.  I do realize that these programs may not catch bad hardware.. and will be contacting OWC for memory and drive support as another avenue. Computer specifications are:
MacBook Pro 7.1, Mid2010, 2.4 Ghz, Snow Lepoard 10.6.8, OWC 8g Memory purchased Jan 2012 (Offically 4 supported), OWC 240g SSD purchased May 2012  Everything worked flawless until mountain lion upgrade!
So I would like to reinstall Mountain Lion clean, but can not, because I can not down load a clean copy of Mountain Lion.  My only thought is to install Snow Leopard on another drive and re-download Mountain Lion on that.
Any thoughts on these questions:  Is the application corrupted?  Does my current install of Mountain Lion corrupt new downloads? Is it my hardware? (Will schedule a visit with Apple store as well, when I can get to Chicago)
In the mean time anyone else experiencing this?  If so any other suggestions?  Any help would be much appreciated!

  • Unable to Load Mac OS Mountain Lion On new Hard Drive

So recently my internal Hard Drive in my Mid 2012 Mac book Pro has stopped functioning, so i made a trip to best by to get a new one. But once i boot from the  my Mountain Lion Disk and select Disk Utility I am unable to format my drive to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I have tried going to the partition Tab and selecting GUID in the setting Option but i still get the error, Partition Failed with the Error : File System Formatter Failed. I've tried Verifying and Repairing the Drive but it says my Drive is Ok. Formatting my Hard Drive to any other Type other then Mac OS Extended Will work.

Try going to the partition if there is one, not the top level drive, and select the erase tab.

  • Will reinstalling Mac OS X Mountain Lion wipe my Hard Drive?

I want to reinstall Mac OS X Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro 2012. I have many apps and files on my Mac's hard drive and I was wondering what would happen to them if I were to reinstall Mountain Lion.

That's cool, but just remember, that depending on a computer and it's configuration, application load times etc all run a little differently. (SSD drives are much faster at loading applications than traditional HDDs. Also, if you hard drive is quite full, it can run slower.)
Before I would proceed with a full reinstall the OS, I would run Disk Utility in the Applications/Utilities folder and repair disk permissions.
To do so, I would reboot my computer, make sure no applications are running, run DU, reboot again and then see if the performance has improved.
