Mountain Lion Desktop crash? Randomly it returns me to the login screen and I have restart all my apps

So after install of Mountain Lion (never happened before) my desktop crashes and it returns me to the login screen.  After I login I have to restart all my apps.
One morning this happened 5+ times in under an hour.  So my productivity has gone down :-(
I work around this by only running three apps (finder, terminal & firefox), and then it sees to only happen 2-3 times a day...sigh.
The only other odd thing and have no idea if it is related is that firefox was showing some animated image from the olympics and when I had it on one screen it was fine, when I had the window on the other screen, the image was not the right image, it looked like it had reached into the screen buffer of other applications and was displaying that (e.g. where there was a scrolling flame for the right image, there was some scrolling upside down text from my terminal when I had it on the other screen where the flame was supposed to be).
An help on how to debug/solve would be helpful.

You're welcome. If you use Zoom often try the new show controller feature. It's below where you turned zoom off. Once you turn it on you can use it to turn Zoom on and off. Plus you can use zoom as a magnifying glass instead of full screen.

  • I have OSX 10.5.7 on my Intel Mac. When I try to login using the correct password the screen goes white and just returns back to the login screen. It does not jiggle like when you enter the wrong password.

I have had a number of issues with my Intel Mac recently and had to reboot using disk utilities, safe mode, OSX recovery, but always come back to the login screen but when I type my password the screen goes white and returns to the login screen. My password is correct and the login does not jiggle as it would if the password was wrong. Please advise,

Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. There are ways to back up, even if you can’t log in. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore everything to the state it’s in now. If you’re not sure you can do that, STOP.
The procedure below may spare you the need for a clean reinstallation of OS X. If you don't feel comfortable carrying it out, don't. try.
Briefly, you need to delete the following file:
    /var/audit/current
If you already know how to do that, you can skip the rest of this message. Do it, and try again to log in.
Boot in single-user mode by holding down the key combination command-S at the startup chime. If you’re using an external USB keyboard, it must be plugged directly into a built-in port on the Mac, not into a hub. Release the keys when you see a black screen with scrolling white text. In this mode, there’s no graphical interface; just a command line. Initially, you can’t make any changes to files.
When the text stops scrolling, and you see a line ending in a pound sign (“#”), type the following command:
    mount -uw /
You must type the command exactly as given, with no mistakes. If you don’t feel able to do that, STOP. At this stage, no harm will be done if you make a mistake, but later, it will be. Press the return key.
    Next, type the following command:
    rm -i /var/audit/current
Press return. You should get the following output:
    remove /var/audit/current?
If that's not what you get, STOP. Type the single letter N, press return, and try again. Otherwise, type the single letter Y and pressreturn.
    Finally, enter the command:
    exit
Press return. The text will start scrolling again, and then the system will reboot. Try again to log in.

  • There's a random extra line text on the login screen?!

I would love if someone could help me figure this one out... (Just installed 10.7)
From my first Lion log in after the update: Just above the Sleep, Restart, and Shut Down buttons on the Lion Login Screen is an extra line of text. It's definitely there on purpose (it look all pretty and formatted in a nice little band) but I have NO CLUE where it came from or where the setting/option is to change what it says!
The text is my old company name, which changed over a year ago and all traces of it on the user profile and address book have been omitted or updated. We haven't used this name in a long time, and were very thorough in making sure all instances were updated, so that's why I'm having a hard time understanding where this buried piece of information came from and how Apple has justified grabbing it and using it on the welcome screen... What is the source of this text? I want to update it to the correct name!
And no, it's not the computer's name, which I also thought of. That's currently set to "Mac Pro." Any ideas at all?

Aha! Do/did you have Onyx installed?
Onyx system utility allowed users to make a change to the file called com.apple.loginwindow.plist. It's located in Macintosh -> Library -> Preferences, and it's a locked system file.
Onyx allowed you to edit the contents of that file and put in your own custom message. I must have done it one mine a while back (don't remember). Apparently for some people, after upgrading to Lion, the message is still there but they can't edit it anymore. The only version of Onyx that works now is the new beta version, but it still doesn't have this option.
Anyway, here's a website with instructions on how to edit it:
    http://hints.macworld.com/article.ph...20921074429845
I haven't tried this because my System Preferences option took care of it. Hope this helps!

  • My Macbook won't go to the login screen and the Lion OS-X is stuck in disc drive

I can't get my mac in safe mode I just circle slash screens or question folder. How can at least get to safe mode

Well first off there is no Lion 10.7 disk, did you make one from these instructions?
    http://eggfreckles.net/notes/burning-a-lion-boot-disc/
To boot form this disk (or a 10.6 disk) you need to hold the c or option key down.
    Gizmo9 wrote:
I can't get my mac in safe mode...
Hold the shift key down while booting enters Safe Mode.
    I just circle slash screens...
    That's a no-good disk sign
    or question folder.
That says it can't find your OS X boot partition, try holding the Option Key down while booting and select either the Lion Recovery Partition or the OS X partition then set OS X partiton in your System Preferences> Starup Disk.

  • IPhoto/Mountain Lion Desktop Settings

    Hey there,
This is kind of a simple but convoluted question: I'm running the latest Mountain Lion on a MacBook Pro (I'd give more info but I don't think it's relevant in this case):
I'm running the latest iPhoto and I have several databases/libraries. IE: Portfolio, Random Desktops, Textures (for 3D work), etc....
I have several desktops and my "default" library is my photo backgrounds library.
When I'm working in another library, is it going to mess up using the "default" library desktops for the background? Basically, do I have to always revert/switch to "default" library before quitting iPhoto for it to keep pulling up random desktop images every few minutes, the way that I have it set? I haven't been able to tell if it works completely as it often has problems even setting the desktop via iPhoto on some of the desktops I have up for some reason. I'm not sure why, but it seems a little buggy.
Any tips/info would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

When I'm working in another library, is it going to mess up using the "default" library desktops for the background?
iPhoto - or whatever - will draw from the most recently opened Library for those desktop images.
    Regards
    TD

I have a mid 2010 macbook pro, same specs as yours, same problem.
I contacted apple as I had just installed mountain lion. they diagnosed it as a bad logic board under TS4088.
you might try calling support, the repair window for these machines and this problem runs out soon. I cannot say thats your problem but it is something to look into.

  • My Mountain Lion mac crashes after resuming from sleep

    Hello
My Mountain Lion mac crashes after resuming from sleep every time I use it
It happens every time the mac resumes from sleep and it started like a week ago
I remember installing the new updates for flash? and xquartz and nothing else.
I have also had microsoft word installed on my mac for about 1 weeks before this problem started so might be related to that
Please share with me any tips on how to fix this because I am really annoyed of losing stuff after each time my mac resumes from sleep

I have an iMac bought may -11, and it worked fine with Snow Leopard.
About a week ago I bought and installed Mountain Lion 10.8.2. Everything went fine, and all software worked ok. iPhoto had some problems, but after installing update the system prompted to do, it has worked ok.
The propblem occurs now and then, when computer is waked up from sleep. The Desktop occurs, but no software starts, not even System Tools untlil rebooting the computer. Of course, I can not reboot the computer from "Apple menu", but holding the power button down.
This is very embarassing! OsX Mountain Lion has turned out to be a very big disappointment. I installed id because of iCloud (i have a new iPad, too with iOs 6 installed).
Can anyone help me? Is there any other way to solve the problem than re-installing good old Snow Leopard?
I would not like to do that, I bought Mac because I was bored in re-installing and recovering!
    Thank you

  • My Mavericks upgrade crashed my hard drive and I had to reinstall Mountain Lion.  Now I cannot get any of the apps that I purchased to download.  The icons on the launchpad just say "waiting" no matter what I try.

My Mavericks upgrade crashed my hard drive and I had to reinstall Mountain Lion.  Now I cannot get any of the apps that I purchased to download.  The icons on the launchpad just say "waiting" no matter what I try.  My app store ID is fine.  What do I do?

Are you now using a different username from the one you used prior to migrating? If so that is the reason for the problem. You might, then, give this a try:
    To fix Home folder permissions
Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder.  At the command line prompt enter or paste the following command line:
    sudo chown -R `id -un`:`id -gn` ~
Press RETURN.  You will be prompted to enter your admin password which will not be echoed.

I was having trouble with Lion so upgraded to Mountain Lion 10.8.2 on my 2008 Mac Pro Quad Core Intel, 8GB computer. The Finder doesn't work properly. Cant't "Restart" under the Apple menu, Doesn't show icon software in colume view and constantly crashes or freezes. Is the computer too old to handle Lion and Moiuntain Lion or can I re-configure it so it works properly?

This usually only exacerbates the problem. First, solve the problem, then upgrade.
MAybe it's just Finder prefs, let's try the quick & easy first...
Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences folder and trash these files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then, restart, or log out and in again.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

  • Mountain lion install crashes-corrupted download

Twice now, after lengthy downloads to my 27" IMac running 10.6.8. the mountain lion install crashed in the early stages with the same error message that the download is corrupted. please delete the install package from the application folder and repeat the download. After the second try, I decided to try downloading Lion which I purchased early this year but never downloaded.
    Any suggestions?

The installation could not be completed because errors were found on your drive. Boot up again while holding down the option key and the select Recovery partition. From there, open Disk Utility and first verify and then, if needed, repair the disk "Macintosh HD". If your drive is 'fixable' this will repair any errors.

  • Mountain Lion update crashing my "Apple Mail"

I just yesterday updated my relatively new MacBook Pro I have owned for 7-months from Lion to Mountain Lion. In the last 24-hours, my Apple Mail has crashed after installing Mountain Lion. Clearly, we have a serious bug in the Mountain Lion. I have sent each crash report to Apple and am confident they will jump on this and patch it quickly ( I hope !!!).
I am wondering if anyone else has found bugs similair to mine where you "Apple Mail" crashes for no reason after you have upgraded to Mountain Lion. Please share with me your experience.
I am also interested in any other bugs you have discovered in Mountain Lion. Lastly, please remember to report any and all crashes to Apple so they can get ontop of these bugs.
PS: Dispite my crashes on Apple Mountain Lion, there are many cool features I like about it. Meaning, I am not here lambasting Apple's Mountain Lion. This is all part of the process of releasing new software. Rarely, are they released 100% perfect and they end up relying on users like us to help them ferret out the many little bugs that need to be identified and squashed.

Miraculously, the post below about Lion works for Mountain Lion as well.

macmrjohn   Re: Mail 5 (OSX Lion) does not work after mailbox migration     Dec 15, 2011 1:43 PM    (in response to Alejandro M. Ramallo)  This same thing happened today when migrating a friend's laptop. THE SOLUTION: Inside the Library folder (Lion hides this folder now, so hold down the option key and use the Go menu in the finder — Library will appear in the menu. Go there.) you'll find the Mail folder. Inside the mail folder was another folder called V2. I simply took the contents of V2 and dragged them to the parent folder (Mail). When I launched mail again, everything was back to normal. As Apple says, "It's that simple!"

  • I just bought a new iMac and am new to the desktop Mac. I read you can get a free upgrade to Mountain Lion if you bought your computer after June 11,2012. Do I have to do something before Mountain Lion is released? If so what?

Please google search for "Mountain Lion disk crash" before upgrading you mac pro. You might need to replace you Mac hard drive after the upgrade. So many people had the same problems including me.
Be aware of the Mountain Lion upgrade problem.

  • Since the Mountain Lion OS update today I've had issues with internet connection and e-mail, has anyone else?

Since the Mountain Lion OS update today I've had issues with internet connection and e-mail, has anyone else?

That's what I would have thought, but even after saving the setting, as soon as I shut down my computer or log out of Mail, it automatically defaults back to 25. It's a bit frustrating.
Now I just need to figure out how to get rid of those horrible pop-up banners but still have my glass sound and number of emails in the red dot when I get an email...
These little tweaks are the only thing I HATE about upgrading my OS.

  • Hi i upgrade from lion to mountain lion to day on my mini mac,Since the upgrade i am getting no sound through my HDMI cable which was working fine on lion Checked the midi audio settings and system preferences to out on HDMi nothing no sound whats so ever

Hi i upgraded from lion to mountain lion to day on my mini mac,Since the upgrade i am no longer getting sound through my HDMI cable which was working fine on lion Checked the midi audio settings and system preferences to out on HDMi nothing no sound whats so ever.Any one any ideas?
I use a samsung TV for my monitor via HDMI.Tried all the system Audi setting nothing .Head phone and internal speakers are fine.

Similar issue; Audio was working fine on Lion, now not on Mountain Lion. Have a Macbook Pro early 2011 with AMD Radeon HD 6750M, connected by thunderbolt through a Lacie LBD to a mini-displayport to HDMI adapter (n.b. same problem when not going through the LBD) to a Pioneer VSX 521 AV receiver. For me when I go into audio Midi settings all the volume sliders for the displayport device are greyed out and at zero. But when I click 'configure speakers', it's able to send out the test signals to each speaker. Part of the problem could be that I'm not getting the option to put out 6channel sound, only 2 or 8 channel. Since my system is Dolby 5.1, and I only have 6 speakers, I would have expected the 6ch option to be available. But I imagine there's more to it than that. Elsewhere someone has suggested playing with Remote Interactive over HD on an Onkyo device; I'll see if there's something similar on the Pioneer that can be changed. Any other suggestions welcome.
