Mountain Lion fails to deliver on its promises for older Macs

For months, I have been anticipating the release of Mountain Lion primarily because of the AirPlay Mirroring feature. I have an early 2008 aluminum MacBook, and after all of the "Make sure your Mac can run Mountain Lion" advertising over the last couple of months, I was relieved that my four-year old Mac had not been rendered obsolete. In preparation for this new OS X release, I even purchased additional memory and a new hard-drive in hopes of adding life to my machine for several years to come.
The "Make sure your Mac can run Mountain Lion" info on the website was not clear about the limitations of installing this new OS X on machines older than 2011 models. I was led to believe that my machine was good to go, only to find out otherwise. Like many others have expressed elsewhere on this discussion board, AirPlay Mirroring was the primary, if not the only, feature that I really wanted from Mountain Lion. After going through the three-plus hour download and a half an hour install, the big reveal of Mountain Lion on my Mac left me struck with the realization that I had been duped by the hype and advertising, and was by all rights swindled into spending $19.99 for a lot of nothing. Instead of using AirPlay, I was forced to download AirParrot for an additional $9.99, thus making my upgrade cost closer to $30. But, the money isn't really the point. Rather, the issue is that if I can by an app for $9.99 that does the very thing AirPlay Mirroring should do on my 2008 Mac, why is the lack of AirPlay support a hardware related issue on my Mac?
As the owner of three Macs, two iPhones, an iPad, Apple TV, an AirPort Express and Extreme, I felt a tremendous sense of loyalty to my Apple products, and I am now wondering why. For months I've been trumping Apple products to co-workers who are considering possible purchases, and my free-advertising is finished. In essence, Apple products--as great as they are--are a leash. Once they get you on it, they force you to live on that leash until they put your product out to pasture. I planned to buy a new Mac, a new iPod, and possibly another iPad during the next year, and now I'm not going to bother. That's not a threat--just good sense, I think. I've got enough of Apple's gadgets, and this Mountain Lion update is a lesson in learning to be satisfied with what I have and not falling prey to the mentality that I've got to have the latest and greatest. This OS X release is revolutionary and eye-opening indeed. Mountain Lion is a lesson I hope I don't forget any time soon.

From Cult of Mac:
"It’s simple: the secret sauce that Apple requires to make AirPlay Mirroring work is on-GPU H.264 encoding, or the ability to compress video on your device’s actual graphic chips without calling upon the CPU.
It’s not just Macs that can’t use AirPlay Mirroring if they are older than 2011: even on the iOS side of things, you need a minimum of an iPhone 4S or an iPad 2 to use AirPlay Mirroring on your Apple TV. Why? Because older iOS devices don’t have on-GPU H.264 encoding either."
I am not sure how this doesn't "make scence."  To be honest, I don't necessarily disagree with the two of you - Apple should have been more transparent in their release notes when specifying which computers are capable of AirPlay mirroring with Mountain Lion.  I guess I felt like I got burned by Apple back in 2005 when I bought an iPod Nano right after they released it and then they had the "One More Thing" unveiling of the new color iPod that played video, which I would have bought instead.  I realized at that point that it wasn't really going to be feasible to have all the "latest and greatest" of Apple's products without constantly breaking the bank.

  • How many licenses does Mountain Lion include? Or is it just for one Mac?

What happens if I have various Macs and I want to install Mountain Lion on all of them? I only have to pay it once right? I'm scared that they will charge me for every Mac so I only installed it on one for now.
    Thanks.

If anyone would like to read the actual SLA for ML, here is a link to the download:
    http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/
And here is the relevant excerpt:
    B. Mac App Store License. If you obtained a license for the Apple Software from the Mac App Store, then subject to the terms and conditions of this License and as permitted by the Mac App Store Usage Rules set forth in the App Store Terms and Conditions (http://www.apple.com/legal/itunes/ww/) (“Usage Rules”), you are granted a limited, non-transferable, non-exclusive license:
    to download, install, use and run for personal, non-commercial use, one (1) copy of the Apple Software directly on each Apple-branded computer running OS X Lion or OS X Snow Leopard (“Mac Computer”) that you own or control;
It is quite clear: you can install it on as many Macs as you own and control. These are the very same terms as for Lion. The OS has separate terms and have nothing to do with the iTunes music, etc. terms.
    @ smokemonster:
The article you linked to clearly states at the top:
    Summary
If you've purchased OS X Lion or Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store, you're allowed to install it on all of your personal authorized Macs.

Ever since i downloaded OSX Mountain Lion, Express VPN no longer works properly for me. Even though it says I am connected, webpages refuse to load. However, connection speed is fine when its turned off. I cannot go on many websites without the VPN. My current location is Shanghai, China. OSX Mountain was installed this morning and everything worked fine until then. Is Express VPN not supported? What do i need to do in order to get it working again on my Macbook Pro (early 2011). I want to be able to go on websites such as Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, ect...

    Hi,
I am having the same issue listed above on my new Mac Mini i just bought, I also contacted Express VPN support and got the same instructions with exception of the command to run in the utilities terminal.  I tried the steps listed, and both commands (posted here, and sent to me directly by Express VPN support), and still unable to connect on my Mac Mini running OS X 10.8.2, but I am able to connect on my iPad and my MacBook which is running Mac OS X 10.6.8.  Usually Express VPN is spot on with their customer support, but this is taking longer to get resolved.  Here is the steps sent to me
Try doing the following to see if the problem gets resolved:
Please follow the instructions here: https://www.expressvpn.org/support/setting_dns_servers_mac_os
(should still be the same for Lion) and then add the following DNS servers: 8.8.8.8 & 208.67.222.220. After adding the DNS servers, please do the following steps as well:
Note: If you're connecting to your ISP via a PPPoE connection, then set the DNS servers on the PPPoE connection itself and then restart your computer for the DNS settings to take effect.
    1. Click on Applications
    2. Click on Utilities
    3. Click on Terminal
    4. Type the following command (without the quotes): "sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder"
    5. Press enter and then try reconnecting to the VPN.
If you're still unable to connect, please send us in the latest log files.
Hope this helps. Let us know how it goes.

Mountain Lion fails to install saying it cannot create the recovery; I had a similar problem with Lion and the Apple Store that helped me resolve it gave me an installable version of Mountain Lion on a flash drive for my inconvenience....is there some trick I am missing or do I need to make an appointment with a genius...

I have the MacIntosh volume and the Boot Camp partition only.  I know that when I installed Lion, I had to go through a whole back-up and recovery of Windows and then re-format the drive.
The tech at the Apple Store had a previous life as a MSCE and was very helpful.  I believe he even said that I should not have htis problem with Mountain Lion which is why they gave me the flash with it onboard.  I was in the process of starting a new job when I went to Lion, so I have waited to do this next and probably last upgrade to this old MBP since I doubt Apple will support this MBP in Maverick.
I do not have another installation, so that is not an option.  I will try to create an external, I have plenty of hard drives around and see if I can get it done that way.  It might take me a week or two to get back to it, but I will comment back upon completion of that effort.  Thanks for your help....Dave Iverson

  • Why does my iMac with Mountain Lion fail to print.

My iMac with Mountain Lion fails to find my 2 networked printers on 50% of the occasions I try to print.  Even though I have earlier switched the iMac on, the only way I can get the iMac to see the printers is to restart the iMac?  After that I have no more probs.  Leaving the iMac on standby overnight doesn't seem to help as the problem frequently re-occurs the next day
The Brother Laserjet printer and iMac are cabled to my router, while the HP Photoprint uses wi-fi connection. There is a PC/Windows 7 also on the network which shares the printers.
I seem to get no help from the Printer utilities in system preferences.
Any suggestions what I need to do to eliminate this apparent breakdown in communication between the printers and my iMac.

    Hello Mike17swr,
Thanks for the post. I'm not sure which model of Photosmart printer that you have connected, but I have included a link below with some great t-shooting steps to help identify the issue.  Good Luck!

After Installing the OS x Mountain Lion some o the softwares are asking for Java SE 6 Runtime. Can someone please help me find a solution.

By default, ML no longer comes with the Java runtime preinstalled. I believe the route to enabling Java if you are going to need it is to run the Java Preferences app found in Utilities. It will inform you of Java's absence and offer to install the latest version and activate it. On subsequent runs, the Preferences app will allow you to fine tune how the runtime operates.
Note that the new default operation is for the applet plugin to be disabled. You need to enable it as needed and it self-deactivates if unused in awhile. Also important to note that Java comes in both 32 and 64 bit versions and you can set the preferred order. Default is 64-bit but I've had issues with some applets failing to run and have had to switch the order.

    Hello,
I have installed mountain lion on my macbook pro ,but it made my mac very slow. Would someone please tell me how  to uninstall this one and reinstall snow leopard? I tried to do it by my original CDs but macbook  pro didn't let me to do it.
    Thanks

It would be easier to just fix whatever is making your machine slow.
I wrote a little diagnostic program to help show what might be causing these problems. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/download/EtreCheck.zip, run it, and paste the results here.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
When you purchase Mountain Lion, you can install it as many times as you want on all your computers for free. To install it on the desktop, open the App Store, go to Purchases tab and download OS X Mountain Lion.
Another option is to redownload it on the MacBook, put the installer onto a USB drive and connect it to the desktop in order to upgrade

Software upgrades do not generally damage hardware; your drive's failure must be co-incidental. On most MBP's, a hard drive is very easily replaced by a user. You might want to check out this site for both hard drives as well as install videos (check which model you have so you can check the correct video):
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/
    hard drives:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/internal_storage/hard_drives_and_SSD
I just recently upgraded my MBP with an SSD; I purchased an kit with an external enclosure from OWC and cloned the current drive to the new one, installed the new drive and was done in no time.
