My computer is an IMac 5.1.  Can I upgrade to Mountain Lion.
No. An iMac 5.1 is a late 2006 machine. An iMac 7.1 (Mid 2007) is the minimum needed for Mountain Lion.
If you have 2 Gigs of RAM, it will run Lion. It can be special ordered by calling Apple.

  • Mountain Lion for iMac Late 2009

Is Airplay the only feature that wont work on the older Macs? I don't use Airplay with My iMac (Late 2009) so it's no big deal, its all I hear people complaining about except that it slows down their computers. Is this an older version issue too (speed)?
I like all of the other features, if Airplay is the only thing that won't work then I'm going to download but if there are other issues with older version computers I would like to know. Thanks

Primarily yes. Mt. Lion is like ANY OS X upgrade. Prior to upgrading your system it should be operating perfectly, if it isn't address your problems first or your upgrade could be a disaster. Check to see your apps and peripherals are compatible and then if everything is OK you can proceed. Before beginning your download BACKUP!!!! It's wise to have a minimum of 1 backup but when it comes to backup redundancy is a very good thing.

What Russa is saying is that if you don't save "Install OS X Mountain Lion.app" before you install you'll need to download it again each time. It's important to save it before you install because it self-destructs after restart.

  • I just downloaded Mountain Lion for my MacBook Pro from the App Store.  Can I also download it for my iMac without paying the $19.99 fee again?

I just downloaded Mountain Lion for my MacBook Pro from the App Store.  I was curious if it is possible to downloand Mountain Lion to my iMac without paying the $19.99 fee again?  Not trying to be a cheapskate, just curious if App Store purchases are universal like iTunes Apps.

You can re download Mountain Lion for free on all your authorized Macs using the same Apple ID used for the original purchase.
How to re download apps from the Mac App Store:
Open the App Store. From the menu bar click Store > Sign In
Click Purchases from the top of the App Store window.
    Select  Mountain Lion.
Then right or control click where you see Installed then click Install.

  • HT1338 if I purchased the OS X Mountain Lion for my 27" IMac do I have to purchase another one for my MacBook Pro

I purchased both 27" iMac and MacBook Pro on March 2012 wth Lion OS installed.  I just upgraded to the OS X Mountain Lion for my iMac and was wondering whether I have to pay again for the upgrade for my MBP?

no you do not need to purchase it again.  You can install it on multiple macs you own.  Sign in to the app store with the apple id used to purchase ML on the mac(s) you wish to install it on.  Hold down the option key and click on the purchases tab and click "download" next to ML.

Your computer does not meet the requirements to run Mountain Lion.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.

If I upgrade my leopard computer to snow leopard via an old update disc, can I then upgrade to Mountain Lion for the $20 deal?

Yes, provided  your computer meets the system requirements and you have updated Snow Leopard to 10.6.8:
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store.

    Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Mountain/Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the content of the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
Double-click on the InstallESD.dmg file to mount it on your Desktop.
    Open Disk Utility.
Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Drag the mounted disc icon from the Desktop into the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable installer that you can use without having to re-download Mountain/Lion.
Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.
As an alternative to the above you can try using Lion DiskMaker 2.0 that automates the process.

Take your Mac to a location with a fast, relaible Internet connection that will be all yours during the duration of the download.
If you want to complain, PLEASE call Apple and do so.
Internet only downloads of OS X is completely stupid, it assumes everyone has reliable Internet everywhere and /or no data caps.

  • How do I upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion for free?

How do I upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion for free? I just bought a new Mac Book Pro 5 days ago with OS X Lion. The Apple store said I could download the new OS for free by entering the receipt # and total amount of the purchase.  I don't know where to start or where to enter this information.  Please help.

    Hi,
Just go to http://www.apple.com/osx/uptodate/ if in the US otherwise go to main Apple homepage, click on the 'Mountain Lion is here' icon then scroll to the bottom where it says 'Get a free upgrade with your new Mac'. All the info should be there. I did this myself yesterday and am now awaiting my coupon code to get it for free.
