  • Is it just me, or does mountain lion have more beach balls, longer boot time, and other unexplained weirdness that clears up with a reboot?

I'm having mixed feelings about Mountain Lion.  On the one hand, I like some of the features that more closely integrate with my iWhatever.  I appreciate having the notes, reminders, imessage, etc that makes it so I can switch from a mobile device to desktop device.
But on the other hand, I see far more beach balls, such as when simply starting Safari.  Applications take a long time to initialize as they try to, I'm guessing, sync with iCloud.   I get more application hangs.  You know, the ones that leave you dead in the water until you reboot, but then mysteriously vanish for weeks.  and boot time is frustrating.  I spend far more time waiting for my desktop and applications to initialize and stabilize after a login.
Granted, much of my frustration here is not based in the technical.  It's based on "user experience" where I don't normally pay attention when it's working well. It just feels to me that the behaviour of ML is much more similar to windows of the past, where a reboot once or twice a day cured most ills.
Is it just me or does anyone else have similar feelings of disappointment.
    thanks!

Hmmmmm... OK y'all have got me thinking.
I normally run disk check and repair, this time it found a number of files and links related to printers and image devices, stuff that isn't likely part of the issue.  There were three links, however, related to core graphics.  the permissionss were  rwxr-xr-x when they should be rwxrwxrwx.  I don't think those are involved, but alas they are fixed.
It seems like much of my issues seems to revolve around the mounting/access of resources outside my laptop, be it icloud, nfs server, samba server, etc. RIght at this moment, Finder is hung hard.  I tried to force restart it, and in the Force quit menu I now see two Finders.  One will kill and restart immediately, one does nothing.   And I can't open a finder window period.
In fact, just before writing this, I was attempting to edit a text document in StarOffice, and StarOffice went to lunch trying to access my samba share.  Now before y'all go nuts about any samba server side issues, let me say that while my MBP is having issues accessing my samba shares, none of my other computing devices are.  W7 laptop pulls up samba file system as fast as if not faster than it's own local file systems.  My other MBP (older core2 duo, but still on mountain lion) does not seem to have any issues.  I don't believe it a server side issue.
So I asked myself, what's different on my 2.66 gb i7 MBP??  It just occurred to me that I have one piece of software that's pretty deeply rooted in file system management....   Tuxera NFS.   I see that it has not been updated since updating to Mountain Lion, so I am going to check that out, and will post results.

  • Mountain Lion Finder "unresponsive" (Beach balls) when trying to copy large amount of files

Before Mountain Lion, using Lion -  transfering 999 files from my compact flash card to my SSD hard drive via a FW800 reader was SO easy. Select all, drag and drop and the transfer would begin immediately.
Now, after upgrading to Mountain Lion, I experience at least 60 seconds of beach balls and an "unresponsive" finder. Sometimes it starts to transfer, sometimes I have to relaunch finder.
I've reset the PRAM (although I didn't hear 4 beeps), the SMC, I did verify and repair disk permissions.
    Any thoughts on this?
    Thank you,
    (Late 2011 15 in MBP)

iomega, lacie, 500GB, 1TB, etc, seems to be drive independent. I've formatted and started over with several of the drives and same thing. If I copy the files over in smaller chunks (say, 70GB) as opposed to 600GB, the problem does not happen. It's like finder is holding on to some of the info when it puts it's "ghost" on the destination drive before it's copied over and keeping the file locked when it tries to write over it.
This may be a stretch since I have no experience with iomega and no recent experience with LaCie drives, but the different results if transfers are large or small may be a tip-off.
I ran into something similar with Seagate GoFlex drives and the problem was heat. Virtually none of these drives are ventilated properly (i.e, no fans and not much, if any, air flow) and with extended use, they get really hot and start to generate errors. Seagate's solution is to shut the drive down when not actually in use, which doesn't always play nice with Macs. Your drives may use a different technique for temperature control, or maybe none at all. Relatively small data transfers will allow the drives to recover; very large transfers won't, and to make things worse, as the drive heats up, the transfer rate will often slow down because of the errors. That can be seen if you leave Activity Monitor open and watch the transfer rate over time (a method which Seagate tech support said was worthless because Activity Monitor was unreliable and GoFlex drives had no heat problem).
If that's what's wrong, there really isn't any solution except using the smaller chunks of data which you've found works.

  • I'm having trouble with my iMessages registration. Has anyone had any problems after they downloaded the mountain lion King with that iMessages because mine is not linking to the computer and my phone

Is anyone else having trouble after thy downloaded Mountain lion x with iMessages mine isnt linking to my computer because it keeps saying i have a  registration error. Has anyone else had this problem or know how to fix it

    HI,
People who have had computer that has had the Logic/motherboard replaced during repair or refurbishment that has not has the Mac Serial Number Flashed to the board have found that iMessage in particular have not been able to "register".
A current purchase of Mountain Lion will tend to give you the latest version which as of Thursday (12 th Mar) is OS X 10.8.3
You can use System Information to find if the Serial Number is there as it appears under the Hardware section.
If it is missing you need to get to an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider who can flash the info to the board.

  • Is mountain lion compatible with snow leopard?

is mountain lion compatible with snow leopard? can you use the same version of iTunes

VMware and Toaster can be upgraded to versions that will run on Mountain Lion.
I was not able to find anything on PalmPilot for Mountain Lion. Of course seeing as how it is at least 15 years old that doesn't surprise me.
As I see you want to run two operating systems which means rebooting to use them just for PalmPilot. IMHO that is a lot of effort on your part for a very small gain.

I JUST INSTALLED MOUNTAIN LION, NOW THE SCROLL BALL ON MY MAGIC MOUSE SCROLLS IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION THAN IT DID BEFORE. I NOW HAVE TO ROLL THE BALL UP TO SCROLL DOWN.

If you go into System Preferences> Mouse. There is a box at the top of the screen that states Scroll direction: natural.
Be sure to uncheck the box after installing MOUNTAIN LION, then the mouse ball will scroll in uthe normal fashion.
       Thanks for all the help...

  • Mountain Lion Server with Network User

I have a Mountain Lion Server with a network user. The whole system has been redone from Lion Server and on top of that I moved location, ISP, hardware and a few other things. The way I used the setup on Lion was to bind my MBP to the server and login from the MBP login window with the network account. If for whatever reason I wanted to look at the network account on the server, I could fast user swtich and everything that was open ie Safari, Mail, etc would be the same as it was on the MBP.
Now if I'm logged into the network user on the MBP and then go to the server, it logs in as if I've just booted. They share the home folder and any new files/folders created on one shows on the other. But if Mail is open on the MBP it won't be open on the server.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

    Thanks for your reply.
I believe I got it to work, but,... How do you get the network account users to show up on the login window of the client computer? The login window shows the name of the client computer and the local accounts on the client computer. When I select Other in the login list I can login using a network account user id and it logs in. The network account user names do not show up on the login window

  • Will Mountain Lion work with old models of Time Capsule?

I was using an online backup service but it slowed down my machine so I want to go to an external drive backup. I have upgraded to Mountain Lion and I am thinking of purchasing an older version of Time capsule for my backups. My question is will mountain lion work with older models of Time Capsule? thanks so much.....

Yes. I have a first generation Time Capsule and it works fine.
Just make sure you buy at least 3 times the GB you are trying to backup. More is better.

  • Mountain lion crashes, with firefox as well

    Hi,
having seen others having problems with crashing Mountain Lion, my issue seems to be slightly different. I am running 10.8.3, so the alleged Safari 6 issue should have been fixed already. However, Mountain Lion keeps on crashing horrendously often in Safari (which I now have stopped using), but, annoyingly, it also crashes in Firefox (version 19.0.2), even if not as often (but still often enough to be incredibly irritating). The screen just goes black without any warning in the middle of using a website. Initially, I thought it was an issue with Flash (fully updated as is Java), but the problem persists even on websites with no videos running.
Would really appreciate help on this.
    NM

If you are having the same problem with multiple browsers, then the problem is probably something common to both browsers. Like something in your internet plugin folders, which are /Library/Internet Plugins and ~/Library/Internet Plugins. You could remove the plugins and see if the problem is fixed. Here is a reference:   Safari 6 (OS X Mountain Lion): If you need to remove a plug-in
if that doesn't work, I suppose I'd try some routine maintenance/troubleshooting maneuvers, like a safe boot, a test user account, repairing permissions, and repairing my hard disk.

  • Does mountain lion come with Mac Book Pro

I just purchased a Mac Book Pro with retina display 10.8.2 but when I go to the app store it says I need to pay 19,99 for a copy how do I get a copy of mountain lion to keep just in case I need to rebuild the PC

As you stated, your new MacBook Pro came with Mountain Lion pre-installed.  The pre-install version is not the same as the version in the Mac App Store, so if you want a copy from the App store, you need to buy it.
Before you get all excited, your new MacBook Pro has a feature called "Internet Recovery".  If you should need to restore your machine (say for example you want to replace your hard drive for some reason), you just put in the new drive, and hold down the option key when you hear the boot chime.  It should being up a lit of possible boot options, and near the bottom of the list should be an option for a "Network Boot".  Is you select that, your MacBook Pro will connect to the Apple servers, and download the correct version of the OS for your machine.  How long it takes will depend upon your internet connection, and the time when you are performing the recovery.  If you try it during an iOS major update, it is likely the Apple servers will be slow and it may take a while, but if you try at a more normal time, it may finish the download (about 4.7GB) in under 2 hours, depending upon your internet connection.  Keep in mind that if you have a local Apple Store, you can go there and use their wifi network to perform the download process...

  • Is it possible to use Snow Leopard on Mountain Lion iMac with Virtualbox ?

I've been lucky recently, with people giving the perfect solutions for me so I try again.
But, this one is a tough one: How to run a virtual Snow Leopard on a new iMac ?
I got a 2013 iMac with Mountain Lion (10.8.5 now) so,  totally incompatible with Snow Leopard. I need SL anyway.
Give up all you old applications and buy new ones is not acceptable. First, this is not my way of thinking and, second, some cannot be replaced.
Many posts say that you can use Snow Leopard with VirtualBox but I could not find anywhere the "how to" (in this particular configuration).
For instance, I followed these 2 protocols, almost similar:
    http://www.maketecheasier.com/install-mac-os-x-snow-leopard-in-virtualbox-on-win dows/
    http://www.macbreaker.com/2012/02/snow-leopard-virtualbox.html
but they use Windows as host system and something is not working (for me) with Mountain Lion.
I made many attempts, with VirtualBox 4.2.18, using pretty much everything: Snow Leopard DVD, SL Server DVD, .dmg of both. I've also got Combo 10.6.8 updates for both (but I'm not sure if it can be used before installing). With another MacBook, I managed to install a SLS on external hard drive and update to 10.6.8. Was unable to use it anyway.
Inevitably, I ended up with the message:
"FATAL: No bootable medium found! System halted."
I have no idea of what support to use and even, probably  important, if it should be set on Primary or Secondary Master ? (in Settings / Storage)
Is it possible at all ???
Would it work better with VMware Fusion ? Anybody successful ?
    Help
    Thanx

How to install and run OS 10.6 Snow Leopard on a virtual machine on top of OS 10.7 Lion:
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/11/17/install-run-mac-os-x-10-6-snow-leopard-in-virtual -machine-on-lion/
    From kappy:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc.  Insert the disc into the
optical drive and restart the computer.  After the chime press and hold down the
"C" key.  Release the key when you see a small spinning gear appear below the
             dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, set the format type to Mac
OS Extended (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Partition button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4.  When the installation has completed your computer will require a restart after
which you will be running a fresh install of OS X.  You can now begin the update
process by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to
             bring your installation current.
First you will have to prep your new SSD:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

  • Can't Upgrade from OS 9.2.2 to OS X 10.3 - Apple Screen with "Beach Ball"

    Hey,
I am trying to upgrade from OS 9.2.2 to OS X 10.3 Panther. So I purchase Mac OS X 10.3 Panther v.10.3.2 Retail, from eBay, used. I get my software in, and all three install discs are there, including the Xcode disc. So I throw 'Install Disc 1' into my Blue & White Yosemite G3. I restart and I've been staring at a screen with a big grey apple and the swirling "Beach Ball" at the bottom. It does nothing else, I even left, went and spoke with a professor, came back and it's still doing nothing. I checked and I have a G3 with Rev.2, so does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do, maybe what I've done wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Thank You.

As Kappy posted, "You will need at least 8 GBs of free space on the hard drive."
Is the RAM original or added? OS X is more discerning about RAM type, that OS 9.
See if you are able to use the Startup Manager, to select OS 9 as the startup volume.
EDIT: Do the Panther CDs look exactly like THESE, and do not say Upgrade on them?
