  • Mountain Lion Install Problems

Hello, everyone! I (obviously) recently bought Mountain Lion (or ML) and am having problems. I have looked around for support, but to no avail.
    Here's the problem:
When I installed ML from the App Store, it took time to download, and I was excited for the install! When I opened it up, I agreed to the liscence agreement, and pressed next. When I clicked on the Macintosh HD, it (to the left of the Macintosh HD) said, "This disk cannot be used to start up your computer." I pressed back, then next, and the popup was still there, and under OSX Mountain Lion it said, "OS X cannot be installed on 'Macintosh HD'." I am frustrated, and have been searching for the solution today, and no one has the same problem.
Side Note - Disk Utility was looked at, and I tried to verify the disk, and its permissions, and it told me to repair it, and I had to stop it at one point. I am very cautious and careful about my data! Please help me, and be nice! Thanks.
    -Vemir
P.S. If you need any information about my MacBook Pro, please let me know, and where the information is. I checked the compatibility list for ML, and it seems to check out. I also completed any software updates. Thanks again!

Anyone having a problem installing Mountain Lion becasue youget an error that this disk is used for Time Machine backup then you should follow the instructions at this link:http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2986
If the spot light search does not find backups.backupdb folder then Click on Finder menu the tool bar then open preferences. Click on Sidebar icon at the top and under Devices to check the box next to your machine name. Now open finder, under devices, click on your machine name. You should now see the backups.backupdb folder. Follow the instruction from aboe link and you should be good to go. Good Luck!

  • Problem with mail after mountain lion install

Mail has become sluggish to locking up after Mountain Lion install.  I get the color wheel each time I start typing in an address to send an email.  I also get the wheel when i am typing an address or name in any web page in Safari.  Is this a Mail Problem or an Address Book problem?

It sounds like your computer needs to be cleaned up. Have your repaired permissions or cleared caches since you got the computer. Often times when upgrading operating systems permissions get screwed up and it causes issues.  Go to disk utility in your "other" folder in applications.  Select disk utility, then on the left hand side choose Mac HD then click REPAIR permissions in the center section. Wait for it to finish, restart your computer, then test.

  • My iTunes match on my MacBook Pro hasn't worked since Mountain Lion install. Tried Apple Tech but all their suggestions didn't solve the issue. Guess I will try them again on Monday. Clearly this is a common problem and a Mountian Lion conflict issue.

iTunes match hasn't worked since Mountain Lion install. Cloud icon keeps striking~ off. Won't upload new tracks to iTunes match. Just the eternal circle of step one, two, freeze....then tries again but never gets completed. Worked fine before Mountain Lion. Apple tech tried over phone for an hour but it didn't solve this issue. See others are in the same boat. Any help with this, please??

Same issue here with a MacBook pro recently upgraded to Mountain Lion.  I hadn't tried iTunes Match prior to the upgrade so can't say whether or not it worked previously.
    Getting quite frustrated!

  • Mountain Lion install results in blank gray screen.

I recently downloaded and installed Mountain Lion on my wife's late-2007 iMac.  Unfortunately, each time, after the installer finishes and reboots, the computer sticks at a blank gray screen where normally the Apple logo would appear while things boot in the background.  I have tried restoring from Time Capsule and re-downloading then reinstalling, but it produces the same result.
With the gray screen problem present, I've tried a Safe Boot, holding down Option to select a disk to boot from (nothing comes up when I do this, just the mouse cursor), and resetting the PRAM/NVRAM.  I haven't really been able to find anyone else having this particular issue. The hard drive in the iMac is a little over a year old as we had to replace the old one.  And from what my wife read, the late-2007 iMacs are Mountain Lion compatible.

saw this in another thread about a macbook pro slowing up after OSX Mountain Lion install:
the  mac owner had mentioned his mac going very slow, and was told it could take several days for the new OSX to sort things out. Perhaps this explains my issue and perhaps yours.
"Yes this can be the case, even slow shutdowns and startups. But Hardisk space can also be a factor. Anything below the 10Gig mark of space left can cause extreme slowdowns."

  • Can't open pics in Preview since Mountain Lion install

Hi - I use Preview to open my iPhoto pics and then save them at a smaller resolution for using on my web pages, blogs, emails etc. It's a bit cumbersome but it works. Now, since I upgraded to Mountain Lion on my MacBook (so it will sync documents with my iPad) blow me - I find I can't open files in Preview! I get a box headed 'icloud for Preview.' The text then says: 'You can move your existing documents to icloud by dragging them here from the finder or other apps.' There's then an option to cancel, and a greyed-out box saying Open, but of course I can't open anything! It means, really, that I have lost the ability to edit my pictures with Preview. Is this right? And is there anything I can do about it? Also, I notice my iPhoto icon has disappeared from my Finder so I can't open iPhoto from there. It's all happened since the Mountain Lion install. Can anyone help, please?

I don't know about your Preview problem and I am interested to see responses about it.
When you say no iPhoto in Finder. Do you mean iPhoto is not listed in the Applications folder? If you do a Finder search on iPhoto is it found. Mine is in "Bobs HD>Applications

  • After Mountain Lion install, my iMac powers off instead of just going to sleep. Help? Thanks.

After I installed Mountain Lion on my 2009 iMac, it will power off after I don't use it a while. It used to just go to sleep, I'd shake the mouse, and it would come back up. Now it powers off and I have to power it back up every time.
My Macbook has NOT had this problem since Mountain Lion install. It is fine.

Do these resets to clear errant commands:
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.
    PRAM RESET
    Zap the PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • My macbook pro has mountain lion installed and it will not play dvds

my hubby's macbook pro has mountain lion installed, and will not play dvd's.  It says it is unsupported, I also have a macbook pro but has snow leopard on it, mine will play dvd's.  Please help me, I can't figure out why his won't play the same dvd's as mine.

The most frequent problem in an optical drive is a dirty lens.  Use a lens cleaning DVD, a few shots of compressed air in the slot or a fine microfiber cloth (eyeglass lens cloth) wrapped around a business card and gently inserted inside the slot.  If no success, the Apple store genius bar is the next stop.
    Ciao

  • My MacBook freezes suddenly since the Mountain Lion instalation

It happens one or two times a day. When it happens I need to restart the MacBook by holding the Power button. I already reinstalled Mountain Lion, the problem still occurs. The Apple Hardware Test showed no problem, what shell i do?

If your original machine had 10.5, it's really too dated to run OS X 10.7 or 10.8, not to mention all your PPC based programs will fail to run
    http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
and likely 90% of your Intel processor ones, all will require paid upgrades. You also need more RAM (4GB+)
Install/upgrade RAM or storage drive in Mac's
, but can't do anything about older, slower processors and graphics.
There has been reports, and my older laptop too, that got permanently bricked upgrading to the Lions, so I really don't advise it for anyone who is not under AppleCare.
How to revert your Mac to Snow Leopard
I have a flashing white screen with an apple and no entry logo?
Well lets see if you have a Recovery HD partition.
Press the power button down to do a hard shutdown and reboot holding the command and r keys down on a wired/built in keyboard. This should get you into Recovery and from there launch Disk Utility and repair the Macintosh HD and permissions.
Also repair the User Permissions as outlined here, just continue with the Steps.

Hopefully you have your data backed up off the machine else

  • I bought a macbook pro with Mountain Lion installed.  Can I install a copy of mountain lion on my other mac for free?

I bought a Macbook pro with Mountain Lion. Can I install Mountain Lion on my other mac for free? How do I do that? Thanks!

On the bright side, it's only $20.
And I would certainly like to have the ownership (and even a copy of the installer on my archive drive), "just in case."
Here are some questions -- which I cannot test because it's not my situation:
Has anyone acquired a pre-owned Mac with Mountain Lion installed but which shipped with an earlier OS version? For those in that circumstance:
Have you been able to apply Mountain Lion update(s)?
How about reinstall ML with Recovery HD?
After either updating or reinstalling, does ML appear in Purchases in App Store?
    Just curious.

  • I have a 15" MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion installed.  I have partitioned the hard drive into two partitions.  Is it possible to install Snow Leopard on the second partition?  If so how do I do it?

I have a 15" MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion installed.  I have partitioned the hard drive into two partitions.  Is it possible to install Snow Leopard on the second partition?  If so how do I do it?

If your MacBook Pro had Snow Leopard on it at one time then sure. (Early 2011 or earlier)
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
Obviously choose the second partition to install into. It has to be OS X Extended journaled formatted in Disk Utility (BootCamp software makes it a MSDOS/FAT32 formatted partition if you used that to partition with)
If it's a Early 2011 or Late 2011 that came with 10.7, it's possible, but it's not easy.

If you can't install Snow Leopard, there is a thread over at MacRumors how to run Snow Leopard in a virtual machine program under 10.7 or 10.8

  • Mountain lion install disk

i want to make a mountain lion installer disc on a 16gb flash drive for my new macbook air with 10.8.4 already on it (as anybody would), but when i try to option-click the buy button at the app store it says "we could not complete your purchase osx mountain lion is not compatible with this computer". As it's a new computer, this implies an issue--does anyone know what it might be? --BTW following david pogue's mountain lion bk instructions, p 796 here--he also mentions that apple used to sell installer disks with 'lion', but stopped--[wish they hadn't]. i'm off to buy a hard drive so i can archive the whole lot & do it that way--but honestly, apple folks!
    thanks

The Mid 2013 MacBook Air includes a special 10.8.4 build that can't be downloaded from the Mac App Store, so this is the reason why you see a message telling you that Mountain Lion is not compatible with your MacBook Air.
This also means that you can't create a Mountain Lion install USB drive until Apple launches a new OS X update, like 10.8.5, so all Macs will be using the same version and you will be able to download OS X. Anyway, in a new Mac, it's possible that you can only get OS X Mountain Lion from OS X Recovery, preventing you from creating an install USB drive.
What you can do is to use Recovery Disk Assistant > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4848 Note that this won't include the installer, so OS X will have to be downloaded from Internet

  • Mountain Lion Install Errors

I have a mid 2012 Mac Mini, The kids had used this Mac for 6 months, So I needed it back, It had OSX Lion, the idea was to erase, format and reinstall Mountain Lion, run Disk first aid, everything good.
Already had Mountain Lion on my mid 2012 MacBook Pro, Mountain Lion install went perfect last month on the MBP with a reformatted, erased drive.
So on the mini I went to the app store and downloded Mountain Lion, Installed it twice, both times a "Damaged File" error occurred, downloaded 3 more times uninterupted, still same error, restarted and downloaded ML twice via WiFi, New error, "Install Failed" both times, Downloaded ML on my MBP, made a USB stick install drive, twice with "Install Failed" error.
Do I have a 15 month old brick, I convinced my new wife that Macs are more stable and last longer as I have owned Macs since 1995, Help.

Have you tried running Apple Diagnostics to see if there are any hardware errors showing up?

  • Mountain lion install crashes-corrupted download

Twice now, after lengthy downloads to my 27" IMac running 10.6.8. the mountain lion install crashed in the early stages with the same error message that the download is corrupted. please delete the install package from the application folder and repeat the download. After the second try, I decided to try downloading Lion which I purchased early this year but never downloaded.
    Any suggestions?

The installation could not be completed because errors were found on your drive. Boot up again while holding down the option key and the select Recovery partition. From there, open Disk Utility and first verify and then, if needed, repair the disk "Macintosh HD". If your drive is 'fixable' this will repair any errors.
