  • My macbook pro has mountain lion installed and it will not play dvds

my hubby's macbook pro has mountain lion installed, and will not play dvd's.  It says it is unsupported, I also have a macbook pro but has snow leopard on it, mine will play dvd's.  Please help me, I can't figure out why his won't play the same dvd's as mine.

The most frequent problem in an optical drive is a dirty lens.  Use a lens cleaning DVD, a few shots of compressed air in the slot or a fine microfiber cloth (eyeglass lens cloth) wrapped around a business card and gently inserted inside the slot.  If no success, the Apple store genius bar is the next stop.

    i do not understand.

Which MBA do you have? It needs to be Mid 2011 or later for ML mirroring to work.

  • After mountain lion install and reinstall, still no toolbar in windows

It cannot be added either, you get shadows instead of toolbar default options which should be there already anyway. I reinstalled from a redownloaded version same issue. Apple claims the powermac I am using is compatible with mountain lion. Has anyone else had this issue?

dcrpitt...my apologies, this is the Mountain Lion forum, not the iMac forum.  As Cscound has asked, it would help to know if you're referring to Microsoft Windows and, if so, are we dealing with Boot Camp or a VM like Parallels or VM Ware Fusion?  It would also help to know more details about your specific Mac...
Under the Apple Menu at the top, choose About This Mac...then click on the More Info...button.  It should look something like this:
Let us know what kind of Mac it is, how much memory is installed, and what Software (Mac OS X version) is installed.
If your issue is pretty much with running Windows on your Mac, there's a forum for that too here.

  • Mountain Lion installed but no sound or System Preferences.

I installed ML and everything sound related did not run i.e. Logic, Waveburner, iTunes, uTube... even Chess!  Programs such as Pages, Calendar work fine. System preferences go to the spinning coloured ball and on force quit are "not responding". I have a Prism Sound Orpheus soundcard and a Euphonics MC Control. Prism sound are looking into this. In the meantime I have no working music system and no I didn't make a backup of the Lion OS!!!
I contacted Apple support telephone support and after about half an hour or more of the usual disk utility stuff,  due to  the symptoms of the problem it is quite likely that my install of ML is faulty and many options were considered.
I've decided to put a new system drive into the Mac Pro. Load Snow Leopard from the DVD (which I have), update SL to the latest version, and then install ML on this new disk. I can use the migration assistant to bring in Logic etc. and reload the Orpheus,Euphonics drivers one at a time. This will give me a clean install without affecting anything else. In the worst case scenario I can wipe this disk and start again. It was only £65 for a Seagate 1Tb disk and this seems to be the best option. Does that make sense?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Jeff,
Tried to reply with my iPhone but not easy! Anyway, back on the laptop now. Yes the crash was bad but Tek support at Prism Sound was really good. In the end I rebuilt the whole system on a new disk which took a couple of days with all the plugins, softsynths etc.... but there seemed to be no alternative in my case, and this was agreed with Prism sound as being the only alternative left to me. I still don't really know what caused the crash but ML and Orpheus are both working fine now. Let's face it, you'll have to update at sometime..maybe best to pick some time between projects On balance, I suspect that my problems were unique to my system and that your installation will go ok.
    Hope it goes well,
    Rick

  • IMac 27" (late 2011), Mountain Lion, Bootcamp, and OSX partition disappearing and refusing to mount

    Hey all,
I'm putting this as a question in the discussion forms for bootcamp as I'm not sure where else to put it, but I resolved an issue I was having and having spent all of yesterday and the day before reading through this community and some others looking for answers and mostly seeing "hope you have backups, time to format!" (which to me is not always the best answer), I thought I would put it here for search purposes (with all the key words I had to use) in case anyone else has a similar issue.
    My scenario was this:
2011 27" iMac with Mountain Lion installed and Windows 7 installed on a boot camp partition.
    1) Haven't been in windows in a while, wanted to play some windows only steam games. Load windows 7. All is well. Have fun. Time to reboot into osx.
    2) Reboot using bootcamp toolbar icon.
    3) Wander away from computer. Come back to find windows 7 has loaded again. "That's weird", I think. Reboot again, this time hold down option key to select boot device.
    4) Discover the only options are the Bootcamp partition and the Recovery partition. OSX "Macintosh HD" partition has disappeared. Huh.
    5) Load recovery partition and load disk utility.
    6) Review disk utility to discover the Macintosh HD partition shows up in the list, but won't mount. Run verify and repair tools. Errors are as follows: Invalid node structure, invalid key length, invalid record count, etc etc. Running a repair fails - disk utility advises me to back up and erase the drive and that the partition is unrepairable. No offense disk utility, but I think I'll try a few more options first.
    7) Purchase DiskWarrior on advice of multiple posters in other threads and general online consensus of it being capable of fixing these sorts of errors. Go through process of loading bootable dvd.
    8) Diskwarrior cannot see the Macintosh HD partition. This is bad. Review more threads. Advice is that if diskwarrior can't fix it, hope you have backups and wipe the drive. Likely to be hardware failure. I'm skeptical of hardware failure, because windows is chugging along running fine if I boot into it, and I ran a scan of the windows partition and it came back clean. SMART status is also showing the drive is ok. However, running out of options and starting to lose hope.
    9) Follow advice in this support topic: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1417?viewlocale=de_de Both safe mode and disk utility aren't options (safe mode won't work without it seeing the partition) so sounds like fsck is the final option.
    10) Start up in Single User Mode (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492). Run fsck per instructions. It reports back ok.
    11) Realize fsck is checking the recovery partition, and not my damaged OSX partition. Realize I don't know anything about unix commands and have no idea how to tell fsck to check a different partition.
    12) Learn that I need to find out what the drive id is for the damaged partition. Reboot, load up disk utility, select greyed out "macintosh HD" partition, click info. Write down the id: disk0s2 (likely to be the default for you as well if you have one drive in your imac and a default bootcamp install).
    13) Go back into single user mode and type the following (without quotes): "fsck_hfs -fy /dev/disk0s2"
    14) (Forgot to copy down exactly what it said at this point, but gist of it was that the drive had errors and isnt repairable). Feel like ****, thinking this is unlikely to resolve itself nicely.
    15) With nothing to lose, try to force fsck to rebuild the catalog - "fsck_hfs -rc -d /dev/disk0s2" I found this syntax on some forums and can't find the thread again. I have no idea what the -rc and -d do that -fy don't, but if someone can let me know, that'd be cool. Either way, this resulted in something actually happening. Tells me it is "rebuilding catalogue b-tree". Still, finishes with a bunch of errors about improperly linked files, more node errors, etc etc.
    16) Retry "fsck_hfs -fy /dev/disk0s2". It seems to be doing stuff now, even though there are lots of errors. Continue to re-run fsck using this syntax. Probably ran it 10-15 times. Takes over an hour. Finally, minimal errors being reported.
    17) Realize that perhaps I should try Diskwarrior again now, since I've managed to do soemthing to the partition with fsck.
    18) Run Diskwarrior from bootable DVD. Success! It now sees the damaged partition. Reports that it has a bunch of damaged crtitical files, and needs to be repaired, but hey, at least it can see it.
    19) Let Diskwarrior do its thing, and reboot.
    20) Boot from repaired OSX partition. Rejoice. Immediately plug back in the timemachine drive you foolishly unplugged to take away over the holidays and neglected to plug back in before you had commenced work on stuff you didnt want to lose through formatting, which is why you are so desperate to recover files rather than wiping and restoring from time machine backups and avoiding this whole mess.
TL;DR - If Disk Utility and DriveWarrior fail you, try running fsck (using different syntax that apple recommends) as many times as it takes to get the partition to a stage where diskwarrior can see it. All advice I saw for similar questions was to erase, reinstall OSX, and restore from time machine backup. For those of you who are foolish like me and had files that werent time machine'd, or those who operate without, maybe try this.
    Hope this helps!

    What -rc & -d do.
    From: The fsck_hfs manual page.
    https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages /man8/fsck_hfs.8.html
-d      Display debugging information.  This option may provide useful information when fsck_hfs cannot repair a damaged file system.
-r      Rebuild the catalog btree.  This is synonymous with -Rc.
-R flags Rebuilds the requested btree.  The following flags are supported:
                             a       Attribute btree
                             c       Catalog btree
                             e       Extents overflow btree
I had the same problem as you but unfortunately "fsck_hfs -rc -d /dev/disk0s2" is failing saying: "The volume   could not be verified completely." I believe it's supposed to be telling me the partition's name (normally "Macintosh HD") between 'volume' and 'could' because there's 3 spaces in between the words.
"fsck_hfs -fy /dev/disk0s2" is failing with the same error.
I tried "fsck_hfs -r -d /dev/disk0s2" since the c appears redundant with a lowercase R. and it again says it cannot be verified completely and adds "volume check failed with error 7". Which unfortunately is not documented on the fsck_hfs man page!
Unfortunately for me, Diskwarrior still can't see my busted Mac OS partition.

Can I Install Windows 7 on my portable HDD from Mountain lion ? And how i need to do it?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Because of a Microsoft restriction, Windows can't be installed on an external drive (there are workarounds, but you need Windows). Apart from that, Boot Camp only works with the hard drive where you have installed OS X, so you can't use it to install Windows on an external drive

  • Using Mountain Lion iOS and audio output will not change from internal speakers to AppleTV so that sound can come from TV speakers, why??

I am using Mountain Lion iOS and trying to connect my MacBook Pro to my plasma TV using AppleTV and AirPlay mirroring.     The video does just fine.     However, there is no audio coming from the TV.     After activating AirPlay I try to select Apple TV as the audio output in System Preferences and it highlights it but then immediately goes back to Internal Speakers and only has sound coming from the MacBook Pro..
    What's going wrong ?????

Are you sure that WIFI network doesn't have an AppleTV on it?  Just because you don't own it doesn't mean there isn't one on that network.  The laptop or better said the OS cannot differentiate between an AppleTV that you own or not.  If it sees one on the network, it will show you one as being available.  The automatic reconnection is happening probably because the last time you streamed to an AppleTV, you didn't drop that connection before sleeping the computer or shutting down iTunes.

  • My iTunes match on my MacBook Pro hasn't worked since Mountain Lion install. Tried Apple Tech but all their suggestions didn't solve the issue. Guess I will try them again on Monday. Clearly this is a common problem and a Mountian Lion conflict issue.

iTunes match hasn't worked since Mountain Lion install. Cloud icon keeps striking~ off. Won't upload new tracks to iTunes match. Just the eternal circle of step one, two, freeze....then tries again but never gets completed. Worked fine before Mountain Lion. Apple tech tried over phone for an hour but it didn't solve this issue. See others are in the same boat. Any help with this, please??

Same issue here with a MacBook pro recently upgraded to Mountain Lion.  I hadn't tried iTunes Match prior to the upgrade so can't say whether or not it worked previously.

  • Problem with mail after mountain lion install

Mail has become sluggish to locking up after Mountain Lion install.  I get the color wheel each time I start typing in an address to send an email.  I also get the wheel when i am typing an address or name in any web page in Safari.  Is this a Mail Problem or an Address Book problem?

It sounds like your computer needs to be cleaned up. Have your repaired permissions or cleared caches since you got the computer. Often times when upgrading operating systems permissions get screwed up and it causes issues.  Go to disk utility in your "other" folder in applications.  Select disk utility, then on the left hand side choose Mac HD then click REPAIR permissions in the center section. Wait for it to finish, restart your computer, then test.

  • PLEASE HELP!! from snow leopard to mountain lion - install page just sitting there

    Hi,
I am updating my macbook from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. I downloaded the software from the app store just fine  and checked to make sure my macbook is compatible (which it is). But now I am trying to install it on my HD and it wont do anything. I agreed to the terms and conditions and entered my admin passwprd already and nothing's happening. I've done this multiple times, closing out of the mountain lion app and restarting it - going through the process over again and still nothing is happening. No horizontal blue install bar, no reving of the fans making it sound like work is being done - nada. Please help!!!

    Hi,
You could try and redownload the Installer.app and try again (move the installer that you have allready downloaded to the desktop first).

  • After Mountain Lion install, my iMac powers off instead of just going to sleep. Help? Thanks.

After I installed Mountain Lion on my 2009 iMac, it will power off after I don't use it a while. It used to just go to sleep, I'd shake the mouse, and it would come back up. Now it powers off and I have to power it back up every time.
My Macbook has NOT had this problem since Mountain Lion install. It is fine.

Do these resets to clear errant commands:
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
The 5 second timing is important to a successful reset.
    PRAM RESET
    Zap the PRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Mountain Lion install results in blank gray screen.

I recently downloaded and installed Mountain Lion on my wife's late-2007 iMac.  Unfortunately, each time, after the installer finishes and reboots, the computer sticks at a blank gray screen where normally the Apple logo would appear while things boot in the background.  I have tried restoring from Time Capsule and re-downloading then reinstalling, but it produces the same result.
With the gray screen problem present, I've tried a Safe Boot, holding down Option to select a disk to boot from (nothing comes up when I do this, just the mouse cursor), and resetting the PRAM/NVRAM.  I haven't really been able to find anyone else having this particular issue. The hard drive in the iMac is a little over a year old as we had to replace the old one.  And from what my wife read, the late-2007 iMacs are Mountain Lion compatible.

saw this in another thread about a macbook pro slowing up after OSX Mountain Lion install:
the  mac owner had mentioned his mac going very slow, and was told it could take several days for the new OSX to sort things out. Perhaps this explains my issue and perhaps yours.
"Yes this can be the case, even slow shutdowns and startups. But Hardisk space can also be a factor. Anything below the 10Gig mark of space left can cause extreme slowdowns."

  • TS4088 Macbook Pro 13" (mid 2010) reboot loop during Mountain Lion install

    Hi all.
I have a very frustraiting issue with my mid 2010 MBP 13" (7.1) that started a mounth ago:
Before all my troubble began it was fully updated with the latest Mountain Lion, Firmware and SMC.
During an iPad sync my MBP went into hybernation because of low power (yeah, I know. I should have noticed that)
When I got it back on power it failed to snap out of hybernation. When I held down the power button for a few seconds it did start to boot.
When it came back to the desktop it rebooted only after 10 seconds or so. I let it reboot like this about 5 times until I started to hunt down a way to resolve this on the support forums. Based on the forums I have tried the following:
    Reset PRAM.  http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Refit RAM blocks
Disconnect it from power, remove battery and press and hold power button for 10 + seconds
Go to Disc Util, verify/repair disc   http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1417
Go to Disc Util, verify/repair permission   http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1417
Run Apple Hardware Test   http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509  This test returned no errors in both standard and extensive mode.
None of this solved my problem. It possibly only made it worse. It reboots during boot or just after desktop appears.
A suggestion from a forum was to replace the HDD with a new one. I then bought a WD SSHD 1TB thinking that i might as well upgrade while troubbleshooting.
I switched the HDD and booted. Since the MBP came with the Snow Leopard (10.6.3) DVD I installed with this.
The install went perfect so I thought to myself that I made it. I then went on to upgrading to Mountain Lion through App store.
During the ML install the computer rebooted.... and rebooted.... and rebooted... and........ (imagine my frustration level here).
I tried all of the above but to no avail.
Thinking that Snow Leopard seemed to work I found an old 128 GB HDD and installed that with Snow Leopard. I made a full system update including iLife components.
Now, That works fine except for an extremely slow boot. It takes a coupple of minutes to enter desktop and keystrokes/mouseclicks are cashed for about 5 minutes.
I then took it to a professional Mac repair shop and let him have a go at it (with the original HDD). He worked on it a whole day and tried to switch just about everything (Logic-board, Top case, all cables, HDD, Superdrive, DC-In, Fan) but again with no resolution. He concluded that there is no apparent hardware errors.
When I got it back the fan ran at 100% and I could see (with the Snow Leopard disc) that SMC version was 0.000 ???
An extensive search lead me to this: http://chimac.net/2010/04/27/how-to-flash-the-firmware-3rd-party-hack/
I followed the guide and the SMC was back to 1.6
I re-inserted the SSHD and went into Disc Util to erase the disk to start all over. I erased the main partition but coudn't erase the restoration partition.
Now the disc is installing through the restoration web installer (Reinstall OS X) but it keeps rebooting after about 2.5-3 minutes after the chime. Sometimes I don't even get to type in my Apple-ID before it reboots, and it is so far only downloading the installer!!!
Here is what i don't understand:
Why does the MBP keep on rebooting even when the OS is not yet installed?
Why is there a sluggish keyboard/mouse response the first 8-10 minutes?
If there is no hardware error why does Single User Mode give me bluetoothusbhubport error?
If there is a faulty Bluetooth, how can that result in constant reboot even when the OS is not yet installed?
I suspect that the root cause is with the iPad being connected/syncing while it went into hybernation but the right solution keeps eluding me.
I appologize for the long entry but this is REALLY testing my paitence. I hope some of you great people can point me in the right direction.
