Mountain lion kills my battery

I have a mid-2009 MacBook pro.  When running Lion, my battery life was around six hours.  After installing mountain lion, my battery life is about an hour and fifteen minutes.

I am also having battery problems since installing ML.  This is a MBP 13" early 2011 purchased August 2011, and before ML battery gave 7 7.5 hours. I recently monitored consumption running Safari, iTunes, Thunderbird.
time          %age Battery          Hours left
18.30               92                         6.53
18.45               88                         6.39
19.00               84                         5.04
19.30               76                         5.11
19.45               72                         5.02
20.00               71                         3.52
21.45               44                         3.06
So in 2 1/4 hours used over 50% of battery.   No good when I want to work away from base.
Are Apple really aware if this and are they working on an upgrade.  I don't want to revert to Lion as there are so many good new features in ML,  also am getting the 'beach ball' several times when opening sites in Safari.

  • Mountain Lion upgrade reduced battery backup

After updating Mountain Lion my Macbook air battery backup reduce from 5 hours to 3 hours.
    Any suggestions?

First, empty the Trash if you haven't already done so.
Use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space.
Proceed further only if the problem hasn't been solved.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To really see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now if you haven't already done so. No matter what happens, you should be able to restore your system to the state it was in at the time of that backup.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
After installing ODS in the Applications folder, drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. When you're done with it, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Why is Mountain Lion eating my battery

I recently installed 10.8, then 10.8.1 and I am watching my battery deplete at an alarming rate. One of the reasons I swithced to the MacBook AIr was battery life. Anything I can do?

  • Why my mac doesn't stop before mountain lion drain all battery life ?

I upgraded to ML two weeks ago and notice 2/3 thins that are really weired:
    1. Mountain lion drain a lot of power in sleep mode, I don't know why but battery is half empty after 4 hours of sleep, what it uses energy for ??? It's sleeping
    2. When "it's sleeping" and it drains all the battery, it forgets to deeply stop the computer. In Snow leopard a deep sleep status came when that happened. And the reanimation of the sythem started with the system freezed a a gray screen of the system with a loading bar that was loading the systhem deeply stop.
    What's happened ? why 1 and 2 ?
After the last rianimation, ML has to repair itunes and iphoto libraries, at it does when you phisically shut down the mac with power botton ?!?!?
    Why ?

After the original (flawed) update to OS X 10.8.5 was installed, the internal camera of a 2013 MacBook Air would not work in Skype and some other third-party applications. The flaw was fixed in a supplemental update. However, if you followed some questionable advice that was circulating on this site to hack your system before installing the supplemental update, then it will not restore camera functionality; in fact, the camera won't work at all. The solution in that case, most likely, is to install the 10.8.5 Combo update.
In the future, I suggest you ignore advice to hack your system by replacing, removing, or changing built-in system components.

  • Sonnet USB 3.0 PCIe Fail with Mountain Lion, Kills Bluetooth

Just sent the following to Sonnet support. They have a system support installer that is supposed to make the card work with Mountain Lion, which it does, but it also kills Bluetooth on my Mac Pro:
Hi there. Have been banging my head against a wall on Mountain Lion upgrade to a 3,1 Mac Pro and have figured out that your Sonnet USB 3.0 System Support Installer 1.0.1 causes Bluetooth to become unavailable, which for me is a deal breaker.
Here is how I get to the conclusion that your software is the issue:
    1. Clean install of Mountain Lion
    2. Install USB 3.0 Driver (Mac) 1.06B, reboot (Bluetooth fine)
    3. Install Sonnet USB 3.0 System Support Installer 1.0.1, reboot, Bluetooth not available (jagged line through Bluetooth icon in menu bar, no Bluetooth item in System Preferences panel)
When I remove this last item and restart Bluetooth comes back.
I hope there is an urgency around a fix for this. Please let me know if you need any more information.

Very quick response from Sonnet, known issue, they are working on it, no commitment on timing of fix.

  • Mountain Lion killed my Office 2008 suite!

Mountain Lion disabled my Office 2008 applications. I've tried installing the Office 2011 suite (don't have a key number for the 2008 version, so downloaded a 30-day trial version of 2011, it's also having stumbling/locking up). Should I simply uninstall Mountain Lion?
I really, really want to go back to yesterday, and not messing around with this. I'm also unable to migrate my old Entourage e-mail to Mail, so am completely cut off from my mail archive. Ugh.
Another question: is it possible to use Time Machine to simply set my entire system back one day? Would that have the same effect as an uninstall?
    Thanks!
    Tom

Thanks! Unfortunately, I don't think I have an alternative to uninstalling, since I didn't export my Entourage info before installing Mountain Lion. Otherwise, I'd consider saying goodbye to Microsoft at this point.
When I look at the Time Machine contents for the date that I want to revert to, it shows simply the changed files for that backup -- which makes me nervous, but I'm assuming that the reinstall will take all files in Time Machine from that date, backward..? Time Machine is my only desktop backup.
    Thanks!
    Tom

  • Mountain Lion killing my system!!

Ever since I upgraded to Mountain Lion a few months ago shortly after it came out, my system is still running really poorly... I've hoped to give it time to settle down, for updates, and so on, but everything works very slow, transistions poorly, and it seems to hate my Adobe CS 5.5.
It's especially bad when I swtich from one application to another, such as InDesign to Illustrator, or from CS to Safari, or just try to close a program ofter using it for a while. Safari freezes constantly, which is something I had never experienced before with OS 10.7. Processes run slow on a regular basis in all the CS programs, and Pages or Numbers, and I get the rainbow wheel all the time in just about every program, and sometimes I get the little blue wheel with 4 quadrants. Closing Adobe CS programs has become something I've had to do when I'm not using them, in the hopes to free up RAM or processes or whatever for others, but they usually crash or just don't close when I do that. I never had to do that before 10.8.
I don't want to exaggerate which might impede anyone steering me in the right direction, but it really is as bad as I am trying to succinctly illustrate. Beyond this, my fan seems to ALWAYS be running - honestly about 75% of the time, and it always feels like it is running hot. I have to say, this is the worst experience with a new OS since OS 10 first came out around 11 or so years ago, or whatever it was. 10.7 always worked very well for me, especially with CS and other programs - I've never been at such a loss as to how to fix an OS issue.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
    Dustin
I have 4GB of RAM, and the early 2011 MacBook Pro (bought in July of 2011) with a 2.2 Intel i7. 21" LG LED monitor as the main display, running the laptop as the second window.

Thanks for sending that, but I've looked the activity monitor a lot recently. What are you suggesting that I do with this?
I've shut down my Adobe CS, and one or two other things I'm not using. But what about when I am using them? Why is 10.8 sucking up so much RAM, when 10.7 ran really well?

  • Mountain Lion kills bluetooth, trackpad gestures

I have latest gen iMac.   After Mountain Lion upgrade.   No bluetooth is available though my keyboard and trackpad connect.   Keyboard acts generics with no top row keys working and trackpad has lost gestures.  Machine does see a trackpad in system prefs.
    Is this release garbage???

Okay, I just found another thread that solved it for me.
Go to this thread and on the second page near the bottom you'll find a thread by joe81tx. Even though my "Disable automatic login" box was already unchecked and I couldn't find anything about name and password, and I figured that it wasn't going to work ... it did.
I hope it works for you.

  • Does Mountain Lion kill Macs?

I downloaded and installed Mountain Lion on my Macbook Air last night. Went to start it up today...Nothing. Nada. Not so much as a whirr from the drive.
The only thing that's different is the new OS. I've tried all the usual combinations of keys suggested to get a Mac going again, but to no avail. Anybody got any suggestions?

Yes, it is valid outside of USA. Please visit http://www.apple.com/asia/osx/uptodate/thailand/ and claim it. Make sure you read the information there carefully.

  • Upgrade to Mountain Lion kills Quicken access??

I just upgraded my OS from 10.5.8 to Mountain Lion, and now can't use my Quicken 2007 (Apple support didn't tell me that would happen). How can I get to my Quicken files to pay my bills? If I had known I would lose my Quicken, especially when I have bills to pay and statements to balance, I wouldn't have upgraded all the way to Mountain Lion. Help!!

This wouldn't be Apples responsibilty. Ideally, you should have checked to make sure Quicken 2007 was comaptible with 10.8 before upgrading.
Check with the developer of Quicken:
This is what I found, Only seems to be up to 10.7..
    http://quicken.intuit.com/support/help/lion-compatible-quicken-mac-2007/GEN83769 .html
then this indicates it may be fine

Check with Quicken for updates for the software, Hope this helps.

  • After upgrading to Mountain Lion today, my battery only lasts less than 1:30 and the fans seem to run constantly. Help?

I have a late 2011 13" MBP with a 2.8 GHz i7 processor and 4GB of RAM. With OSX 10.7, my battery could last over 4:30; however, now I see the battery drop a percentage point about every minute (currently at 81% and it says 1:16 remaining). I have a number of programs open (Chrome, Mail, iTunes, Twitter, Skype), but these are the same programs I almost always had running with Lion and I never had this problem. Something else new is that the fan seems to constantly be running and only turns off if I put the computer to sleep.
Here are screenshots of my activity monitor: http://imgur.com/a/shehM
    Any advice?
My battery has decreased to 70% (1:07 remaining) by the time I've finished writing this...

It looks like Skype is basically running two CPU cores at nearly full throttle (well, 1.57 cores).  That's bound to drain the battery pretty quickly.  If you were not doing a high resolution video chat in Skype when you took that screen shot, then something is very wrong with it.  Check and see if there's a newer version of Skype available that fixes the problem.

  • HT1338 I have installed the Mountain Lion and the battery drains exact 40% faster like before...

    Hi,
i have upgraded my Mac Book Air to the OS X ML and now we have a lot of problems in our office. Our macs are running out of battery almost 50% faster as before. I understand that it is a problem of the Software, not Hardware. But how long will it last? It is really making like compicated. We were buying Mac Airs exactly because of their battery length and presentation skills...?
    Best regards,
    Edgar

Ok. Let me first ask you, do you have any backups of your files - for example, do you use Time Machine or any other backup system?
Next, quit iPhoto. In the Finder, go to your Pictures folder. Is there a file there called iPhoto.Library? How large is it? (If it doesn't show the size, click once on it, click cmd-I to see the information). If it's a healthy size (ie, several GB), then that should be your library, and you can double-click it to launch iPhoto. (The application will remember where your library is next time, you can just launch iPhoto normally).
If that's not the right file, check your Trash. Is there anything in there?

  • Mountain Lion killed my Mini

Hmmm - what a mess.  I downloaded ML - took many hours, then in the morning clicked "install".  It went through it's gyrations, but I noticed that my screen kept toggling to "analog powersaving mode" and shutting off.  Now that it is fully installed, this trend has continued.  Even after a full shutdown and restart, about once every 30 seconds, for a second or two, I can see my screen.  then it blanks out for another 25 seconds or so.  Just keeps doing it.
The screen is fine, since I plugged it into my laptop and it works just dandy.  Kinda dissappointed in Apple this time.

Thanks for the Idea.  Unfortunately the PRAM reset didn't change things.  The link lead me to the possiblity that the Power Management Unit was not happy - especially since I sometimes see the "Analog Power Saving Mode" message blink quickly on my computer screen.  Tried resetting that and now don't have any screen writing at all.  making it worse, I think.  Shoot.

  • Mountain Lion killed microsoft Word and Excel

I just downloaded and installed 10.7.3 and when I went to use Microsoft Word and Excel and PowerPoint, it said "power PC applications are no longer supported"!

    What do you do?

    Thanks, SteveJobsFan0123,
I appreciate your prompt and helpful reply! You and Neil were amazing in how quickly you replied. That is so incredibly calming when you're going through a sudden and unpleasant technical surprise that looks like a disaster.
    So thanks again! Much appreciated.
